— LauraW I don't know how many times we have to explain basic things to people.
1) Contraception...is a luxury item, like deodorant or marijuana. You do not actually need it to live.
It does not facilitate your fundamental survival, except perhaps in very very rare cases. There are other people who lack actual necessities in this world, and the importance of their needs transcends your childish want for "free" coochiepills rather profoundly.
2) Contraception...is f*cking cheap. The Hell is wrong with you? Are you telling us that women are goddamn helpless infants, and should be proud of it?
3) Contraception...is not free just because someone else- someone better at taking care of themselves and others than you are, you selfish twit- paid for it.
It's not free.
It's not free.
It's NOT free.
Helpful idiots of the Left, they will lead us all into slavery.

Duh. Of course it's not free. That's why you have to pay for our use of it. Remember, we only let you pretend that you "own" anything to begin with. Don't confuse that reality.

Exactly. There is no "free". To accomplish "free", someone must become a slave.
I think Obama and the dems would be thrilled to shackle all working class people (esp. evil scary republicans) and force them into slavery so that little miss prog-hole slut can have free contraceptions.

A triumphal feast was scheduled in a village and, in order to ensure that all might enjoy in the feast without imposing upon any few, the villagers all agreed that each would put one bottle of his best wine into a great cask for the occasion. However, upon reflection, one villager reasoned that, if he filled his bottle with water, the dilution would be so slight, no one would notice. So, the day of the feast arrived, and the great cask was tapped, and, wonder of wonders... nothing but water poured forth! Every villager had reasoned alike – my bit will not be missed!

Ironic that Romney went to Obama's turf in Chicago to get a big win and give a good speech.
If there's any group in the country that has had their fill of Obama and his baggage, it's Illinois republicans, particularly the tiny little subset that lives in Cook County where Romney gave the speech last night.
That right there will be sweet victory in November, if yesterday's vote turns out to be a "Game Changer" of a different sort.

The 19th century feminists just wanted women to be legally equal to men (why should an adult woman need her father or brother or brother-in-law to sign off if she wants to purchase property?). But you know how the March of Dimes changed their focus to birth defects once polio was eradicated? "Feminists" from the late 20th century refuse to acknowledge the original goal has been achieved and create new, unrelated goals.
And unobtainable goals, so they never have to end their organizations and look for real jobs. NOW is a jobs program for the useless.
Posted by: HeatherRadish at March 21, 2012 06:41 AM (ZKzrr)
This is also why I think giving kids an "allowance" is evil. You train them to expect money for doing nothing.
This argument always confuses me because I got an allowance that was tied directly to doing my assigned chores. Chores not done? No allowance for you! I don't think I know anyone who just got an allowance without doing anything for it.
Of course, once I hit about 14 or so and wanted new clothes and other things, my dad got me a job doing data entry where he worked. Once I had the job? No allowance for me! Chores still had to be done though.

Of course, I then also had no clue how money worked once I was out on my own, but there you go.
My kids have to work for their money. They do their chores, they get paid. We then sit with them (well: him. The 2 yr old is a little young for it) and help him divide his money: Church, Savings, Spending.
He's even responsible for remembering his chores on his own. He forgets to do them (or at least to ask what his chores are for that day)- that's his own fault and he doesn't get paid.

More freedom and responsibility is the proper conservative argument. The government shouldn't have a say in what benefits package your company offers you or whether it offers one at all.
If the government wants to improve choice and access, it should confiscate less of your money, and grant you the kind of tax breaks employers get for compensating you with insurance instead of salary. You should be able to save money in an HSA with a rollover to pay for all your routine care - care that has YOU as the final consumer, not the government herd management agency, or your employer. Any funds spent on insuring against serious illness should be completely deductible - or exempt- from tax, including fica. There. The fed is well out of it. You pick the group you want, if you want one, and join it, and reap the benefits of your own prudence.
There are plenty of medications, procedures, treatments that are covered that don't provide as much medical benefit/ improved quality of life as contraception; but it would be wrong for the federal government to order emergency appendectomies be offered to all with no copay.
It's a losing argument anyway. The bullet points in the top post aren't really true. Contraception prevents a risky and hard-on the body condition. That condition is a natural state, but it is one that has hardships even when it goes well, and it can go very, very badly. It's commonly a good idea to use contraception. rather than to wear out the body with repeated pregnancy, and lots of women should (as opposed to want) avoid pregnancy at various times of life for the good of their health and to avoid potential disability in the near future.
Some women know they are prone to illness from pregnancy - diabetics, women with high blood pressure, women with tubal scarring or fibroids so numerous they could result in birth defects - I myself always got a flare of an autoimmune condition that threatened my eyesight and has left me with scarring that increases my risk of glaucoma and will interfere with any future treatment of cataract, lowering it's chances of success.
As a physician, you take your patient as you find them. A married sexually active person is not doing anything nearly as immoral as smoking or overeating; you don't deny a smoker or an overeater treament for emphysema or diabetes because they did this to themselves or don't give up their activities. You provide the best treatment to mitigate harms and improve the patient's life.

The right answer does not encourage people to remain ignorant at the expense of the nation's taxpayers and the destruction of natural rights, Civil Liberty, as if mandating taxpayer funded contraceptives and abortions protects anyone's civil rights.

Now: He's not leading in every poll. Even in the ones he is still leading, it's much more slight than can be making him comfortable- and that's before Conservatives have had our Kumbaya moment at the Convention. Beyond that, in several polls he's behind. I've seen at least one, recently, where he's behind Rick Santorum.

"For the pragmatic and progressive America that grew out of secularized higher education, truth has a provisional, this-worldly orientation. It’s more evolutionary than eternal in character–a fluid body of knowledge and interpretation, subject to revision and expansion.
For the Confederacy that now dominates the GOP, truth is solid and fixed and divinely embedded in the structure of the universe. Humanity’s responsibility is to accept and believe the truth rather than test ideas against actual experience. The Confederacy’s obsession with “originalist” interpretations of the Constitution–a twin of biblical literalism–is the classic example: truth must be eternal, universal.
Pragmatists and progressives defer to experts and professionals. They expect truth claims to be supported by evidence that emerges from research and testing. They put their faith in this process, and in the communities of inquiry–the disciplines–legitimized by secular institutions of higher education."
You see now, wingnuts? I know that the truth... is like liquid birth control.
Trust me, I know pragmatic.

@163,
Bah, 1000X Bah. As a political argument you're probably right, it's "losing" but only because the ability of the populace to think rationally is pretty much gone.
Personally I'm willing to take the loss if only so people have to start thinking about their a priori views on these things. (Granted I'd love to have pulled this off better such that the politics were better played and we could call a win and get people to think.
Let's start with an example. I can come up with quite a few preassumptions present in your discussion. (But I'm lazy, and typing is hard, so here's someone else's discussion of at least one of them: http://tinyurl.com/7joms24) On top of that, it seems to imply that the only form of contraception available are the ones covered in ObamaCare, which isn't true. Using an IUD, Pill, Tube tying ect usually qualifies as a choice (over say: NFP, Condoms, or a Vasectomy). Choices have consequences. Incidently, if your hypothetical married couple is having sex when they don't have the ability to afford even $9/month pills, they're taking on an (admittedly small 1%/year) risk of an unplanned pregnancy they'd have no chance of affording. That's reckless, IMHO. Even if under the "new rules" they get it for free (and thus don't have to pay for it) I'd consider it reckless to not consider the fact that that these things have a failure rate, and that failure has consequences, and you need to be prepared for those consequences. Being Reckless is immoral. Likely more immoral than smoking since you're (potentially) playing with someone else's life. Considering there are doctors who won't prescribe birth control (they have to disclose this up front) there is some wiggle room in not seeing certain patients.*
Thirdly you've constructed the most horrific straw man I've seen in a while. Wait nix that, it's the fairly standard strawman for this debate. Whose "Denying" anything? Even the most agressive opponents of the bill (Namely the USCCB) just don't want to pay for it. This does not equal denying.
While we're busy looking at preconceptions on this, anyone else notice that the forms of contraception offered barely qualify as "preventative medicine?" even by a large defintion? Most of them would provide a false sense of security against STDs, without actually preventing them. It doesn't really make risky sex any safer it just sorta normalizes the risk for both sides involved (not that I'm a big proponent of risky sex, but the whole idea behind this is really wonky)
*Patient abandonment rules vary by state and can get complicated, so I won't digress into them. As a rule of thumb, if certain disclosures are made up front (and they don't violate any other antidiscrimination rules and it's not an emergancy situation) doctors get a some abilities under morals clauses. See Also: Pediatrictions who drop patients when parents won't consent to vaccines.

You know, I'm sure this guy has plenty of faults in his past, but you gotta give him some major credit for coming out and saying what damn near no other politician would EVER say. I'm really getting to like this guy.
My main beef with him had always been RomneyCare. In a recent speech he said he went beyond simply saying he was for repealing ObamaCare. He said he would had out exemptions from ObamaCare to all 50 states on Day 1. So basically, maybe ObamaCare can be essentially killed without 60 votes in the Senate.

This argument always confuses me because I got an allowance that was tied directly to doing my assigned chores.
Same here, allowance was a small pay for doing things. It wasn't much, but I didn't need much, I was a kid. Once I turned 14, I got a job, eagerly, so I could earn actual cash to put towards things I wanted.

The Left pushes for more, and more, and more, and more. Pushing, pushing , always with the pushing. Give us this. Pay for that. Accept this. Teach that. Do this. Don't do that. Ad nauseum.
My part in the culture war is saying, No.
"No" is a word that leftists and other children do not like to hear. So then they throw tantrums and when Mommy says "no" again, Mommy is the meanie.
I am perfectly fine being the meanie when it comes to spoiled children. If that makes me "at war" with you, then I can live with that.

Remember the British "Oxford" Study headlined @ Drudge last week claiming that a beta blocker cures "implicit and explicit" racism in 37 white people who, despite their express belief in human equality, must be drugged in order to prove not racist. The only other disclaimer was that the beta blocker couldn't cure antagonisms based on religion or ideology. NO negative side effects were noted, though the beta blocker chemical negatively impacts each of the body's systems, whether by choking to death or from ITP.

If it hasn't been noted, it should be: Mitt and Santorum have never been in disagreement on this topic, so hopefully anyone in the R party looking to score points on this issue regarding primary season, you're looking in the wrong area.
In other words, I know some people fear Santorum on the topic of legislating sex. They shouldn't be. His position, like Mitt's is, the federal government has no business in people's bedroom, neither for nor against anything anyone is doing there.

What's wrong with living in a bowling alley?
Or, as a purely hypothetical example, living in a bowling alley during the day and living in one's car and/or behind a bowling alley after business hours?
Or, more to the point, living in/near the bar area of a bowling alley whenever one is not otherwise engaged in the productive work, such as scoring some really bitchin' nitrous oxide canisters, or driving around looking for serviceable discarded furniture?
Because I get the feeling you're denigrating some people's lifestyle choices.
Lifestyles some of us around here might enjoy.
Hypothetically.

Well, how about just offering a coulpe good reasons why it's a bad idea? I see ZERO moral obligation to provide a social safety net in the first place. It's luxury, which only a prosperous society can even consider. Purely a luxury. The Christian church DOES have a moral obligation to charity, but even that is not expected to be unlimited nor required to be without preconditions. Therefore, if I the taxpayer say that I am unwilling to finance the reproduction among the underclass, that should be my right to refuse to do so. I often ponder the massive number of bastards I help support through my taxes - and I didn't even get the dubious pleasure of f***ing any of those women.
Voluntary sterilization in exchange for public assistance is more than reasonable. It would also decimate the ranks of the Leftists, which is itself greatly to be desired.

Twenty years from now, this corner of the internet will be a long-forgotten, low rent section. People will occasionally come by asking about a guy named “Ace”.
Sitting on an overturned 5 gallon bucket in front of a small fire, a white haired African American hobo will look up at the questioner. “Ace? He don’t come around here no more. Moved uptown…” As he looks back to the glowing embers, he mutters “the boy had timing. Yes Sir, it was timing that made him.”

"So how do you Socons plan to create your Religious/Moral utopia?"
"The word Humanism should be carefully defined. We should not just use it as a flag, or what younger people might call a "buzz" word. We must understand what we are talking about when we use the word Humanism. Humanism means that the man is the measure of all things. Man is the measure of all things. If this other final reality of material or energy shaped by pure chance is the final reality, it gives no meaning to life. It gives no value system. It gives no basis for law, and therefore, in this case, man must be the measure of all things. So, Humanism properly defined, in contrast, let us say, to the humanities or humanitarianism, (which is something entirely different and which Christians should be in favor of) being the measure of all things, comes naturally, mathematically, inevitably, certainly. If indeed the final reality is silent about these values, then man must generate them from himself.
So, Humanism is the absolute certain result, if we choose this other final reality and say that is what it is. You must realize that when we speak of man being the measure of all things under the Humanist label, the first thing is that man has only knowledge from himself. That he, being finite, limited, very faulty in his observation of many things, yet nevertheless, has no possible source of knowledge except what man, beginning from himself, can find out from his own observation. Specifically, in this view, there is no place for any knowledge from God.
But it is not only that man must start from himself in the area of knowledge and learning, but any value system must come arbitrarily from man himself by arbitrary choice. More frightening still, in our country, at our own moment of history, is the fact that any basis of law then becomes arbitrary -- merely certain people making decisions as to what is for the good of society at the given moment.
Now this is the real reason for the breakdown in morals in our country. It's the real reason for the breakdown in values in our country, and it is the reason that our Supreme Court now functions so thoroughly upon the fact of arbitrary law. They have no basis for law that is fixed, therefore, like the young person who decides to live hedonistically upon their own chosen arbitrary values, society is now doing the same thing legally. Certain few people come together and decide what they arbitrarily believe is for the good of society at the given moment, and that becomes law." -- Francis Schaffer
When/if society becomes "left" enough to push the boundary markers towards its own self-destruction, socons won't have to create anything. They'll be the only ones left... theoretically speaking, of course.

What's the difference between sterilization and lobotomy? Why not offer a choice in your twisted future? How about the life of my first born on a reality TV show?
What CAN we agree to?

_______________
Morally reprehensible? By what standard? No one is killed. No one is forced to undergo the procedure. They are free to sustain themselves without burdening me, the taxpayer. No one's first born is taken away and put on TV or whatever.
I don't see how lobotomies come into this. Those were given to people against their will. Usually crazy people... Sterilization, accepted voluntarily in exchange for goods and services, is not remotely the same. The person is still functional, and his mind is not damaged nor his ability to think and provide for himself.

What does that have to do with my post again? Did I even mention Romney? Or are you implying that he'll switch positions once the primary is over? I'm not a huge Romeny fan, I'm around Kubler-Ross Stage 4, but this doesn't surprise me really. Most politicians run center once the primary ends. In either case, I doubt he'll run towards ObamaCare. If we (Repubs) lose the Birth Control/Religious freedom issue it will be because we lost the narrative (and became "banners of Birth Control") not because Mittans flipped positionn on it.

Still with the straw men? Really? There comes a point in time where it gets hard to even handle the strawmen because it requires creating more strawmen just to compete with your strawmen. I have a post above that goes into greater detail.
Again though, there's the implication that a) someone wants to ban contraception and b) that the only forms of contraception are the ones covered under the regulations. Although, nice touch on throwing in the "regulate menstural cycle" bit. It implies necessity. Doesn't change the fact that it's still a choice. I'll admit it may be a piss poor choice (pay for contraception or deal with the menstrual cycle) but in most cases it doesn't rise to the level of "somone else needs to provide this for for me."
Incidently I have knee problems, I choose to deal with them over the surgical option because the surgical option is expensive and I can handle the pain with some ibuprofin whenit gets bad and staying off my feet. Why don't we mandate free arthoscopy without copays?

I don't think so. The people wanting their "free" stuff already plan to vote for the SCOAMF. Romney made a very good point that the promises of free stuff is to buy votes and the cascading debt is immoral.

Yes. This is such a losing issue that poll after poll shows we're actually winning on it.
You have noticed that (with the exception of specifically the Catholic Chruch- for obvious reasons) the Conservative response to this has been "Pay your own way, or cross your legs. I don't owe you contraception," haven't you?

Saints coach Sean Payton suspended for a year, the GM for 8 games. They also lose 2 2nd round draft picks. Greg Williams suspended indefinitely.
What. The. Fuck. Those fucking cheaters the Patriots got, what? A gold star? And Payton gets this? Yeah, that makes sense.

Tebow to Jets for a 4th round pick.
Gee, it's a mystery why anyone would ever think that Elway wanted nothing to do with Tebow. Total. Mystery.

It is to me, what's the mystery? Something about St. Johnny I don't know?
Elway made several statements that were, to be kind, damning with faint praise of Tebow. It was patently obvious that Elway did not apprciate being forced to go with Tebow and that he wanted to go another direction. Hey, that's fine, it's his perogative to do that. But he handled the whole Tebow Mania thing in a pretty classless fashion. Someone, maybe the Head Ewok I don't remeber, commented that Elway gave Tebow precisely the amount of support publicly that Elway's publicist pointed out was necessary. I thought that was a very good observation.
Again, if Elway and the Broncos want to go another direction, good for them (well okay as a Browns fan I am pointing and laughing and hoping that after the first game of the season they'll be begging Tebow to come back on bended knee but let's pretend I'm a better person). The only point is that those of us who said that Elway's "support" of Tebow was deserving of the quotes now have yet more evidence of that.

Ok, that's about how I saw it too, I was just wondering if you had some other info, like Elway being anti-Tebow for his overt religiosity or something.
Otherwise yeah, Elway didn't care for him, that was clear. A 4th rounder? Ouch, that seems harsh.

Some guy from Pew was just on ABC News Radio explaining the growth in employment. According to him, the increase in hiring is just a reflection of our growing population and we're not making any real gains. We've just been treading water since the recession.

It's not a case of buying your fertility, as one might buy an organ. It's a case of taking steps to insure that you will not create an even bigger burden on me while enjoying my welfare largess. (Granted, sterilizing the males is essentially pointless, but it would be unfair to only require the treatment of one sex.) If you want to keep your reproductive capacity - good for you. Go find someone else to pay for your food and shelter.
If measures like this are not taken, we'll be swamped with underclass spawn within a generation or two. They already out-breed productive people at a distressing rate. They're already filling the slums and jails to overflowing. In the larger sense we already have way more people than can be employed gainfully, which is another reason to quit encouraging those who are least capable of succeeding from breeding more like themselves. Otherwise the whole work-for-pay system of getting along in the US is sunk.
As for the idea of selling your body parts for government handouts, well, that doesn't sound super horrific to me since it would be fully voluntary. I guess I'm just not that disturbed by it, so long as it's not forced harvesting like in China.

Food, clothing, and shelter.
I shouldn't have to pay for my food, my clothing, and my shelter. We all should, collectively.
They want a guaranteed minimum income.
I'd be curious to see how a long a single dollar value for that minimum income lasts before it becomes insufficient.
