78 The US must open itself to an independent investigation into its use of drone strikes or the United Nations will be forced to step in, Ben Emmerson QC said yesterday. His comments came as Pakistani officials said that a US drone strike had killed at least four militants after targeting their vehicles in North Waziristan on Sunday. Attacks by American unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are deeply unpopular in the country, which claims they violate its sovereignty and fan anti-US sentiment. Only last week cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan vowed to defy Taliban threats to attend a rally in Pakistan's tribal areas aimed at highlighting the human cost of US drone strikes. Mr Emmerson, a leading London barrister and UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Counter-Terrorism, said America is facing mounting global pressure over its use of UAVs and he is preparing a report for the next session of the Human Rights Council in March. The issue, he insists, will “remain at the top of the UN political agenda until some consensus and transparency has been achieved”. Mr Emmerson, we'd like to send you that information. What is your exact GPS coordinate?

Defaming Islam, the Koran or the Prophet Muhammed is a capital offense in Pakistan. After the incident, religious tensions and rallies involving Muslim protesters forced Christians to temporarily flee Mehrabad, the Islamabad neighborhood where Rimsha resides, a senior official of All Pakistan Minorities Alliance told AFP. I think that the problems of the Muslim world are intractable, and our best strategy is to pull out of the Middle East completely, except for a small base in Afghanistan, from which we run special ops to keep the Taliban from overrunning the place. We can use drones and other air power throughout Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa to suppress the more obvious Islamists.

134 The time is right to scrimp on military pay raises, says a new report that appears to agree with a Pentagon proposal to cap basic pay hikes starting in 2015. The report, commissioned by the Defense Department, was conducted by the Rand Corp., a think tank that has done considerable research for the military on ways to hold down personnel costs. The report offers three reasons to justify military raises that are smaller than annual private-sector wage growth: • A tight civilian job market has improved military recruiting and also has made midcareer troops less likely to leave. • The end of combat operations in Iraq and the winding down of the mission in Afghanistan will dampen the political fallout of smaller raises. • Service members are well-compensated after a decade of robust increases in pay and benefits. Since 2000, basic pay has risen by 45 percent, compared with increases of 33 percent in private-sector wages and 31 percent in the cost of consumer goods and services. When tax-free housing and food allowances are factored in, the report says, enlisted members are better paid than 80 percent or more of civilians, compared with less than 60 percent in 2000. Hum? And oc course they will NO pay raises what so ever for any civil servant, union member, and government officials. Right? Right? Right?

160 When I got out of the Navy I was an E-6 over 6 drawing P-3 150.  I made roughly 16K a year.  If I had been married I would have got an extra 500/month housing allowance and had a lot more time off using "my wife she" chits. That was one of the reasons I got out.

Currently that same salary would be about 36K a year plus 1100 housing allowance (depending on duty station).

That is comparable to civilian pay, especially when you factor in base exchanges etc where you don't pay sales tax.

Yes there are easy days in the Military, but the bottom line is that they still own your ass and if that means working 12 hour or more a day when needed you are ordered to do it and not asked. Nor can you just decide to interview for another job because your boss pissed you off or quit. And I am only talking about non-war zone duty. He views it as a necessary part of campaigning, as a natural — if unpleasant — rotation of the cyclical political wheel.

If historical voting patterns hold and Romney takes 60-75% of those currently undecided, then the final result will probably be Romney by 2% or so. The Electoral College Scoreboard on Rasmussen Reports (http://tinyurl.com/cjny7a9) shows that Romney doesn't have much margin for error but if he takes at least four out of six of the "Toss-up" states (e.g., FL, IA, OH, VA), which will likely happen if he wins nationally by 2%, he wins the Electoral College with 272 EVs.

And they are doing the same thing in the Dental Corp in the Navy. Promoting to 05 and goodbye but then giving huge bonuses to bring new Dentists in on the other end. Makes no sense to me, even at the lower pay level

In SOME places they did.  That's the COLA adjustment.  That did NOT happen in DC.  I can tell you I am making the EXACT same amount I was making 2 years ago.

COLA is based on the local inflation rate.  No inflation (as there is here in DC) then there is no adjustment.  A very large chunk of the federal workforce in is DC.  However, your point is correct, in some places there was a COLA adjustment.

Yeah, I agree with that analysis. It just becomes dicey if instead of winning by 2%, Romney only wins by .5-1%, which is certainly possible this year. It's just more difficult for the GOP nominee to win an Electoral College landslide nowadays than it is for the Democrat nominee since the Democrats can usually count on carrying four of the top six EV states (CA, NY, IL, PA) for 124 EVs and have a 50/50 chance of carrying FL for 153 EVs. The Democrats certainly have an easier path to 270 EVs.

238 Retention bonuses are just one of the tools in the box. True enough, and the military has been pretty good about using the bonus system in just that way. I am just asking why they would need more money in the system. I am as hawkish as can be, but the military is awash in money. There is a lot of waste. When we borrow 40 cents on every dollar, even the military needs to trim.

239 After ERB, Navy offers bonuses to fill gaps By Mark D. Faram - Staff Writer Posted : Thursday Aug 16, 2012 15:36:20 EDT Personnel Specialist 1st Class (SW) Max Feige got the word in November he was being cut by an enlisted retention board. The Navy was breaking his contract and ending his 12-year Navy career. That was devastating. But when the Navy announced last month it was throwing tens of thousands of dollars at sailors to extend sea duty — in ratings once held by sailors separated by the ERB — that made him angry. “When I heard about these sea duty bonuses, I was furious,” Feige said. “It was like someone had kicked me. It just doesn’t add up at all. Manning at sea has always been a challenge, but the ERB has only made a bad problem worse.” Some may chalk the complaint up to a disgruntled sailor. But Feige, one of 2,946 sailors cut by last year’s two ERBs, is not alone. Sailors in the ranks, unaffected by the cuts, say they are disturbed by the Navy’s actions. More than 100 of the separated sailors are suing. And now a congressman wants to call Navy brass on the carpet on Capitol Hill to explain why sailors have been cut at the same time bonuses are being thrown around to keep others working overtime. The Navy on July 26 announced several measures aimed at fixing its 10,000 sailor manning shortages in sea duty billets. Among those were Sea Duty Incentive Pay bonuses, ranging from $500 to $1,000 per month, for select ratings and paygrades. Among those rating and paygrade combinations were 22 that were also gutted by the ERBs. More than 800 sailors separated by the ERBs might have qualified for those jobs. This had sailors — and at least one lawmaker — scratching their heads. Why were some sailors being cut while others were being extended at sea?

That doesn't mean we don't need the tool, we just need people who know what they're doing using the tool.

The other thing I'd say about that story, and retention in general is....we just plain don't need as many senior people in some rates as we need in the lower rates.  Someone has to do the labor.

So yeah, it's possible we're kicking out E-6s and then paying bonuses to EFNs (E-Fuckin'-Nuthin') to join certain specialties.

Congress mandates how many people you can have at what grade.  The services figure out how many are needed in each specialty.  The rest is all about math.

262 Hmm, Romney up 1? That was faster than I expected. I guess last Thursday's poll must have been really good for Obama, and it dropped off. Given that the Sunday poll was much better than the Thursday one, that is a little unusual.

I can't think of anything from Thursday that would give Obama a big boost, so maybe it was an outlier.

Basic statistics: 1 out of every 20 polls will be an outlier (outside of the margin of error) even if methodology is 100% perfect.  That is, even if Ras manages to perfectly randomly sample people, he will still have dud polls every 3 weeks.  The "rolling average" is supposed to minimize this, but as we saw, one bad day changes everything.

You have to look at these things with a critical eye. If there's no reason for Obama's numbers to go up, they won't go up suddenly.  Also, my guess is that Friday was also an unusually good polling day for Obama, so the margin should go back to its Romney +2-3 steady state until the conventions.

Interesting that now Ras and Gallup are in sync.

277 CAIRO -- When Egyptian actor Ayman Kandeel believes he has been tricked into appearing on an Israeli television network, he smacks the show’s producer and charges to slap the female host, throwing her into a corner. He curses, tosses chairs, and single-handedly demolishes the set. Just before the famous actor reaches for his gun holster, the crew finally tells him he is a guest on a prank show and that everyone in the studio is actually Egyptian. A crew member admonishes Kandeel: “Shame on you for hitting a woman.” Kandeel, who admittedly carries a gun in these uncertain times of political unrest, hugs the young host and apologizes: “You brought it upon yourself,” he said. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/world_now/2012/08/egyptian-prank-tv-israel.html Lovely people

I thought that too, but I gave too much credit to Independents being able to see he is a socialist.  This time though, he has a record and it is abysmal.

You can't hide from the Misery Index.

The data that shows he can't win is right there for everyone to see, but people either don't want to see it, or are afraid to trust it.

Approval under 50% for the last 2 years.
Approval under 50% in every swing state.
GOP trusted on the economy by double digit advantage.
The top three issues to voters are economy, debt, and Obamacare.
The issue the Dems are trying to run on, abortion, is dead last in voter importance.

Just like the financial meltdown doomed McCain (who was nursing a small 5% lead at the time), the "stubborn economy" has doomed Obama.  The only question left is will his desperation cause an epic implosion that results in a Romney landslide.

291 howdy, rapists! [ducks] Had a banner Pennsy weekend -- Mt Gretna Art Show -- wow. had not been before! was amazing. Mt Gretna is a planned artists' community - I knew someone so could park in the town - but only residents and their family/friends were allowed to park there. I walked thru to check out the bungalows and was STUNNED at the amt of Romney/Ryan bumperstickers! I know it's Lebanon County but still. It's Mt Gretna! BTW not to stir the pot, but the nuns and priests who taught me used to say that a woman couldn't get PG from rape, we were TAUGHT THAT IN SCHOOL. Did this dude go to Catholic school? I used to argue back but I was a weird kid. We also had to go to prolife marches as part of school, but I was always "sick" those days. It was heavy stuff for kids. The cumulative effect of my experience with this issue in school caused me to become quite the strident Pro-Choice person. It's heavy stuff. (and I'm privately prolife now, but am one of those who'd rather not be banning it and putting women and their drs in jail) Also, this is just insane to argue about! I suspect that poor tool is just ignorant. I feel bad for him if he did go to Catholic school (and is around my age) but maybe other Christian schools teach the same idiocy? I actually missed the maelstrom here so forgive me if I'm completely off on what he said, but it sounded like what I used to get in school.

Now if Obama were running against McCain, I'd be willing to give him a chance.  But the Romney Election Robot isn't going to give him something smear him with.

They tried the "evil rich guy" tactic, and it didn't move the needle.  All they had left was throwing grandma off the cliff, but Romney neutralized that too.

This time I think it's up for grabs--the irresistible force of the economy meets the immoveable object of the MSM.

I don't know whether Romney can bend the American trajectory the way Reagan did, but if Obama wins, though, that's it. We're toast at least for my lifetime.

Did Mitt say there were going to be Obamacare waivers for all 50 states?  We need to see it in writing ASAP.  Did he make a promise to end drilling moratoriums?  Show me the executive order now.   How about a written plan to deal with some of the malignant cancers like EPA and State Department?

333 "Indeed so, I just wonder what is really happening with the Independents."

They have a remarkable ability to not vote for an incumbent, just when you really need them too.  It has something to do with them being independent, I guess.

Every poll I've seen, even the insane over sampled D+19 polls, show the independents going for Romney by double digits.  Since Obama won them handily in 2008, this is not a good sign.

Obama's only mathematical path to victory is if Dem Voters > GOP Voters + Independent Voter GOP differential.  That is a very unlikely scenario, which is why you see D+19 polls only giving Obama a 10 point lead.  If the turnout is like 2004 (D+2) or 2010 (even) then Obama loses badly.  He could even be in serious trouble with a 2008 turnout (D+7).

369 The Obama campaign would like voters to believe that Paul Ryan's Medicare plan would "end Medicare as we know it" -- privatizing the whole system and costing seniors more than $6,000 extra a year. But the campaign, even before Ryan was selected as Mitt Romney's running mate, has effectively been running against the wrong Ryan plan. The president's accusations largely refer to Ryan's 2011 plan, ignoring the fact that the House Budget Committee chairman rolled out a different version in 2012 -- taking into account Democratic critiques. Though the 2012 plan is more moderate, Obama and his surrogates have all but ignored the newer version as they amp up their accusations against the Romney-Ryan ticket. Most glaringly, the campaign has omitted a key point. While Ryan's 2011 plan proposes to give seniors a government payment to buy private insurance, his 2012 plan offers seniors a choice. Under the blueprint, seniors could use the payment to buy private insurance or stay in traditional Medicare. This distinction rarely comes up at Obama campaign events. Romney/Ryan should be able to tear obama a new one

374 I have a wild prediction: Romney takes Minnesota.

Sound crazy?  Maybe it is, but ever since Jesse Ventura, the Minnesota Democrat (DFL) party has been moribund and Minnesota has had three-way elections for almost every major statewide office ever since.

It makes me think of an electorate that's been married to a philanderer. She doesn't want to be with him, but she doesn't want to go to someone new just yet.

And then, in the so-called "Iron Range", a Democrat stronghold, they kicked out their long-serving Democrat Congressman.  Mostly because of Obamacare.  That was huge.  The Iron Range is like West Virginia or Western PA -- more conservative than most Republican states, but still voting Democrat like their grandpappy did.

Losing the Iron Range really hurts the DFL and if that is a substantial shift in attitudes there, Romney might just carry the state.  Wisconsin bordering Minnesota doesn't hurt either.

Of course, if Romney happens to take Minnesota, it won't matter that he takes Minnesota.

376 a guy could do a lot of bad things in three hours from the employer's perspective: drink and make the later meeting unproductive, call a lawyer, call a competitor, call customers, etc. Yeah, that gives plenty of time to lawyer up and come back to the meeting avec said lawyer. I've never really understood that whole you must leave now with security escorting you but then you have to come back later to discuss whatever. Have the discussion and then escort out. Hell, from the very cynical pov it's better for the company to hit you with serious financial choices when you're upset and not thinking clearly than to give you time to stay pissed but ponder how best to screw them back.

I'm not a tax expert except in paying them, but all my income is 1099.  If you make 1099 income, you have to pay quarterlies equal to 100% of your prior year tax bill to avoid penalties.  Since your 1099 income will last less than a full year, you could factor this in to reduce the payments, but if you miss your guess and pay too little, you'll be penalized.  If you get a refund at the end of the year, I don't believe any penalties apply, even if you underpaid your quarterlies.

Get QuickenBooks or Quikbooks.

you'll need to keep track of whether or not to make quarterly payments to those two items based on total 1099 inc shown.

The latest version of those programs will also tally % of pay as likely tax burden....or call the summer number for HR Block or a CPA....no biggie you'll find you understand you tax issues a lot more clearly from now and TRULY understand the horror of Uncle taking 25% of your wage potential off the top.

426 "what's the odds of Akin stepping down"

We'll probably know tomorrow.  I expect they are doing heavy polling a focus group work right now to measure the damage.  If he really is screwed (which isn't a given) and they can convince him he can't win, then he would withdraw.  The GOP executive board then gets to select a replacement candidate.  My guess would be Brunning if that is the case.  I doubt that Steeleman did herself any favors by publicly criticizing today.

On the other hand, if they find out that they can still win this despite the stupid interview, then he will be spending a week visiting rape crisis centers.  His biggest problem is likely fund raising now.  He will need a ton of money to fight, and out of state money will go places like MA and VA.

Clearly the Romney campaign decided to jettison him, given how fast they were to issue a strong personal repudiation from the candidate himself.

Hah.  Easier said than done.  My income fluctuates from year to year so this screws up my tax situation constantly.  I had a banner year last year because of a big case that I won and I ended up hugely underpaying for the year (since my payments were based on my prior, not-so-great year).  I wrote a big check for the difference in April.  Worse, I'm paying quarterlies this year based on last year's income and its killing me since I'm unlikely to do nearly that well this year.  Because of this, I've paid about 60% of my income to Uncle Sam in calendar year 2012 so far.

This Going Galt thing is looking better all the time.

435 President Barack Obama could lose his home state of Illinois in November, a new poll shows. A poll conducted by Illinois-based pollster and political strategist Michael McKeon found Obama leading Republican Mitt Romney by 49 percent to 37 percent in Cook County, the home of Chicago. That puts him ahead by a far thinner margin than expected in a county he should be winning handsomely. Cook is the most Democratic leaning county in the state. It is also the most populous. 443 435 cicero,

It'll only get more complicated.  I never got approval from my shop manager to use it but my sincerest appraisal of benefit/risk potential says that self-incorporation as an LLC fortified by volunteer work on a topic related to your field is the best protection for some narrow set of craftwork and skills.  "Employee" vote buying measures are going to create a market for "not employees".

I was accused of Waler mitty hood on another thread and not wanting to whine or rehash, I'd like to reiterate I have been a failure to one degree or another in all my pursuits but two: a narrow application of HazMat work for an airline, and my work as a Tax Prep specialist.

Not knowing your precise history "going galt" while still using your skills may best be served by offering "contract work" as a "troubleshooter" in your field and just taking overload pulse work.

My son is almost latchkey age and I am deciding whether to pursue becoming an enrolled agent for audit defense, go back into hazmat work despite my fears, or drive a semi since that is sort of "the family business" I am most suited for since my military career did not work out after my injury.

I wish you the best of luck Cicero, your posts are always well reasoned.

regards,
sven

Teej, I'm reminded of the time I had a supervisor take me upstairs to the big boss's office so he could let the boss's secretary fire me while he sat there.  I looked her in the eye and said, "Don't trust this character."  Then, as he was escorting me out of the building, I swerved aside and stepped into the conference room where my former colleagues were gathered.  I said cheerfully -- and loud enough for my ex-supervisor to hear:  "He just fired me, boys.  Don't trust him.  Good luck!"  And then I walked out.

I heard later that he got fired -- by his own replacement!  So, sometimes there is justice in the world!

465 458 EC,

I did gain a super power already....headaches, inarticulate posting style, and a cancer scare that probably aged me 5 years in 5 days.

I had a cyst in my liver(probably still do I need a check up in 3 months) as long as my pinkie tip to my wrist and as wide as a pencile the Doc down at fort polk thought was either some weird parasite(offered I think as a joke) or a tumor that may or may not have been malignant.  Went through a battery of tests while my wife was in Iraq because I didn't want to worry her and they decided they were 95% sure it was benign.  As a bonus I got into a 13 month argument with my doc at the hospital about whether or not my gallbladder had to take a walk.

My mother in law God bless her wanted me to sue the airline I worked for...I had to explain to her politely that even if I KNEW that exposure on the job was to blame I would not bite the hand that fed me.

Trust me they did not give me the money I made for my charming disposition, I was never under any illusion that in all our jobs we literally sell people our time.

regards,
sven

The irony is that Clooney would have been perfect, had they mounted an U.N.C.L.E. movie when he was younger -- say about the time he did "From Dusk Til Dawn" in the '90s.  The "Ocean's Eleven" and succeeding films have just the right flavor for an U.N.C.L.E. film, too.

My nightmare is that some studio goes ahead with it, and casts Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson as Solo and Illya, two bumbling "spies" for an underfunded US intelligence agency, with Kevin James ("King of Queens") as their idiot boss, Mr. Waverly.  The mind doesn't just reel, it launches itself into space. . . .
