Catch Of The Decade
— andy

Sorry to bump out that feel-good video in the down-page post about the armed robbers in the Internet cafe getting shot, but it can't hold a candle to this one.

A New York City bus driver says he was thinking of his own young daughter when he rushed to catch a 7-year-old girl plunging three stories from a Brooklyn building Monday.

"Please let me catch her, please let me catch her," Stephen St. Bernard, 52, recalled thinking. "That's all I could say. Let me catch the little baby."

God bless you, Mr. St. Bernard.

And before anyone goes passing judgment asking "where the f**k were the parents?" let me just say that, as the parent of an autistic child probably not too different than this one, when they get it in their mind to do something they're quick about it.

All you parents out there, imagine having a 7 year-old toddler. For the rest of you, that means a child you have to pay constant attention to who has no innate sense of danger. It's very difficult to do this 24/7/365 year-in, year-out.

On a related note, this seems like a good time to apologize again to the neighbor at the vacation house we were in a couple of weeks ago who sprinted out her back door when she spotted my little guy running across their yard headed to the pool. I had him. I really did.

Also, as a side note to all the Paterno/Penn State apologists out there: this is how decent, honorable people respond when they see a child in danger.

15 7 year old "toddler"?

It's a mindset. A toddler explores the world without a concept that real dangers await. Fortunately their limited size and mobility make them somewhat containable with simple barriers, keeping them away from all of the real hazards in the world around them. It's what you "baby proof" your cleaning cupboard, and your wall sockets for. Now fast forward to the physique and motor capabilities of a 7yo with the same mindset.

51 Re Paterno's statue. My guess would be there is some donation-related issue that's making them hesitate. Perhaps it was put up as a gesture of thanks for football program donors who specifically requested Paterno be honored or something. Whatever the case, they need to take it down, even if it means returning the money. They should plan on replacing it with a new statue honoring HoF Penn State football grads or something like that. Or a generic feel-good sculpture showing PSU student fans and unspecified players. Put the focus back on the students and take if off that withered old bastard.

The goal here is to safely decelerate the person without lethally accelerating yourself in the process. Since people survive 2 story falls on their own, it is possible to render potentially life saving assistance. But stepping beneath a full sized person definitely puts your life in danger if they were to strike you outright.

The window guards mandated by NYC aren't very substantial, and wouldn't stop a determined child. Also, with the way the window guards run, the AC unit would not have fit. So most people remove a window guard have the AC unit in its place. This kid squeezed around the AC unit to get out.

Ehh, before you go off. The learning curve on autistics vary greatly. Already, my little boy has figured out stuff that will get him in trouble. Notable he only checks yet to see if he is being observed before proceeding. But he is also only 1. Being unable to ever make an activity exclusionary behavior would be exhausting if the child had the speed and veracity of a 7yo. Wherein you simply could never make "NO" stick, and they never learned practical limits through personal experience (read injury).

64 "36 People have watched too many episodes of Superman. Your arms aren't much softer than the ground." You--- you don't have a good grasp of how arms work, do you? The ground doesn't offer much "swing" or low-deceleration. When something hits the ground, it rarely swings downward only slightly more slowly than the object. The Ground tends not to move much when something that small hits it at a high velocity - arms can transfer momentum to the legs, back, and shoulders while moving as a cushion. Try dropping an egg on a linoleum floor. Next, try having someone drop an egg into your hand. See if you are capable of oh, I dunno, not having the egg splatter against your stiffly extended, non-moving hand. Try "catching it" without "destroying it". Kinda like that.

90 Re Paterno:

Keep the statue, and forbid them from taking it down. But require them to add, on site, another statue that memorializes the plight of the abused boys–one that somehow emphasizes the cover-up. This should not be forgotten.

This hurts me.   I grew up idolizing Joe Paterno.  And to an extent I still do.  Yet I know he's culpable.

Paterno's teams were pristine, as far as NCAA violations, until the late 90's, when players started to show up in police reports and the graduation rate dropped.

Joe was an old man who lost control of his program.  I think there needs to be a mandatory retirement age for coaches. I refuse to believe a younger Paterno would have tolerated this

91 Trust me, that kid was bruised to heck. Sure, better than the ground, but after a certain distance, it won't matter how you try to give. You'll still die, and the guy who tried to catch you might, too.

100 Butt shot bad guy: Hours after his release from the hospital, Henderson, who talked about the pain he feels in his buttock and hip, said the plan was to "barge in, get the money and leave." He said "he never expected anyone to be armed." "The gun was broken and rusty and wasn't loaded. Nobody was going to get hurt," he said, standing with crutches. Retrieving the customers' phones was what he said was their "main priority." That way, he said, the customers could not call law enforcement officials. Henderson theorizes the reason why he was caught off guard is because, when Dawkins entered the business, he busted a computer monitor with the baseball bat and "glass got into his face." "He couldn't warn me," Henderson said. With the glass temporarily blinding his friend, Henderson noticed two women were behind the counter and he thought that was "fishy." Turning around to see what the women were doing, Henderson said he was shot. "I turned around to run and my leg gave out. That was when I got shot. I hit the ground, and he was still shooting. I thought I was going to die," Henderson said. Henderson said that, "by the grace of God," his "leg came back." "I ran," he said. Henderson said he and Dawkins drove to a house to see a woman he said "is like a second mother" to him. At the Marion Oaks residence in the 13000 block of Southwest 47th Terrace, deputies found what they believe was the getaway vehicle, a four-door black Nissan Sentra. The car was towed to the Sheriff's Office for processing. "I couldn't breathe. I had lost so much blood. I don't know what she did, but she revived me," he said, likening the experience to coming back from the dead.

101 Butt shot Bad Guy: Though Henderson said he doesn't blame Williams for shooting, he takes exception with Williams shooting at him while he was down. "I was down, and I'm not going to continue to shoot you," he said.

103 @ Ombudsman 91 Yes. But if done well, then, even after the heat of the moment has faded, the combined statue could serve as an object lesson in the many perils of power, and of the danger of getting wrapped up in your own myth. He WAS a great coach, and he DID allow this to happen, and neither should be consigned to the memory hole.

I'm still doing it, and my younger autistic son is 17.  Button-combination locks on the INSIDE of the door, I specially designed the windows with small awning opening at the top instead of the bottom, so he can't crawl out, knives stored on magnetic wall strips IN THE GARAGE so he can't get them...it's an endless chess game, always trying to stay one step ahead of him.

I refuse to disregard 61 years of generous service, of the millions of dollars contributed, NOT to the football team, but to the Library and to the research facilities that turned PSU from a cow college into what might be the best public research university in America.  None of that would have happened without Paterno.  It is HIS accomplishment.

An old man made an egregious error in judgement, and yes, his reputation will be sullied by it, as it should be.  But this man is not Barry Switzer.

I'm willing to stipulate to the Freeh report - yes, his behavior was reprehensible.  I just don't want all the good the man did -and that good was extraordinary -  to be forgotten.  Make no mistake, it certainly doesn't trump this.  But it shouldn't be forgotten when taking the measure of the man

113 It's hard to tell from the video if he actually "caught" her, but he obviously broke her fall enough that she avoided injury. The guy is a hero. But autistic kid or not, it's hard to not blame the parents for this. How on earth did she get out there? With a window AC unit, if you open the window, the AC falls to the ground. ???

115 FYI - at the point St. Bernard caught her, she was moving at almost 30 mph.   This is about the speed a world-class sprinter hits at their best.  Imagine a small child hitting concrete at that speed.  She might have survived, but it would have been ugly at best.

It's easy to let life get you down sometimes.  Butt-Shot Robber Guy was a pretty good palate cleanser, but this video is a seven course meal (although for a Moron that's a half-dozen pieces of bacon and a beer).
