Chavez Being Voted Out?!
— Ace

One problem: Just because he's voted out has little to do with whether he actually departs office.

The link is in Spanish but I think you can figure it out. Actually: Per Drudge, these are the exit polls, not the actual vote tabulations. Which just might be different.

It's not the vote count, it's who counts the votes.

30 The problem with him trying to hold on after a defeat is that the military won't necessarily support him.

I believe they threatened a coup against him when he tried to rig the vote on an earlier constitutional referendum (nevermind the actual coup attempt for that, but anybody responsible for that must be long gone).

33 Let me tell you something. I like in a town in Southeastern Massachusetts. We just had a special election for Selectman here last month. My town votes for Republicans. Not overwhelmingly, but by about a 10% margin. In this special election, about 1350 votes were recorded. By our best estimates using all the official information, only about 1295 people went to the polls. And the Democratic candidate won by 35 votes. That's a margin of fraud of about 4%. Could it have been something other than fraud? I guess. It could have been really shoddy record-keeping by the town board of elections and the town clerk. But I just don't see how they "lose" between 4 and 5 per cent of the electorate in the paperwork. If its 4% here in my sleepy Republican town, then you can be damn sure it's 10% in the cities. Were going to need more lawyers. And more thugs.

41 This is based on an exit poll from a number of regional capitol cities. It is illegal to publish exit polls or other electoral results prior to the official, final election result being published by the central government. The question is, why release this exit poll now? It could be designed to rally the opposition in case Chavez attempts to release results showing that he won reelection. In fact, I can't think of any other reason to do it. They expect Chavez to cheat--and so should we.

57 It looks like the country is split, roughly 53-47 or 52-48 to have Chavez out. At that margin, and with his level of rabid support from left-wing nutjob socialist militias, and given his control of the government, there is no way Chavez walks away. The best-case scenario is that Venezuelans realize that Chavez stole the election, and for the next six years they stew in resentment, and Chavez dies in the meantime, so at the next election the opposition has 57%+ support, and the government doesn't try to hold on to power in the face of such anger.

117 Protestantism gave us this: A human being can have a personal relationship with God. If a person can communicate with the greatest entity which exists, then there is no subsidiary entity which is Necessarily superior to a single human being. Therefore human beings are intrinsically powerful, not merely powerful based upon the organizations and relationships they are a part of. The inherent and deserved power of the individual is inalienable for him and using it is Godly. God also provides us with the agency to act to make changes on our environment, and the environment for us to act upon. Therefore, work, and it's result- property- is Good. And acquiring property through the application of our God-given agency upon God-given natural materials, is a sign to others that the individual is Godly. This one thought and its logical antecedent, is singularly Protestant as well as being singularly necessary is a bad climate. It is the basis for what we in the West consider civilization.

Posted by: Bart who lurks with SMOD 2012, master of his domain at October 07, 2012 08:23 PM (he2LC) I'm well aware of the problems with it the way it's treated by idiots. There are many different ways of addressing it legitimately while maintaining internal consistency. I've wrote one short story detailing such many years ago. It ain't that difficult. it's just that there are many ancillary effects that have to be considered and handled. BTW, Feinman used to view anti-matter as particles traveling backwards in time.

But ... that sort of travel also beings up many problems to consider that I doubt Bart has thought about, such as matter actually disappearing from the universe and then reappearing - but most people don't ever consider this particular little hassle even though it totally violates the conservation of energy, which is one of the absolute foundations of modern physics.

The Robot Devil at October 07, 2012 08:11 PM (GtCbF)

The question is WHAT the Secret Service will do.  Shortly after Ryan was named as Romney's running mate, when someone charged the stage at a Ryan appearance they did not move or react, and it was local cops who blocked it.

A month or so later, one of the SS "lost" his service pistol on Romney's plane.

And we have plenty of evidence that the professionalism of the SS is ... not what it used to be.  Especially when they are out of the country on the government dime.

One wonders what orders they have from their superiors, and what their reaction to those orders will be?

As a student of history of Latin America, this is a huge day for the global south. We have a neoliberal who wants to turn the county backwards from cutting poverty and hand the country back in the hands of the powerful. Chavez is far from perfect, but he fights with the poor on his mind. He is not a dictator as they have fair elections and has been popular with the people of Venezuela. He has even survived a U.S CIA backed coup attempt. Liberals and socialists around the world who stand on the side of the lower class should stand against the neoliberal neocons in Venezuela and around the world."

But I don't think his party has "evolved" to hold his views. If enough of them did, they could try to overturn election results. As it stands, enough of them are corrupt to try to manufacture votes in particular precincts, and hope that puts them over the top.

159 The most important elections that Venezuela had were twice over a referendum to eliminate term limits. He failed to get it passed the first time, but Chavez sweetened the deal the second time (and who knows how much extra help he had). At that point, further elections did not matter because he was president for life.

The country's only hope is that his sickness gets him out of office, as the country still has enough money that it can recover from his policies (though not quickly).
