— Ace The last part is deftly implied.
Tell the truthÂ….While you cling to a family story and the inaccurate report that ONE document was found that supports your claim, we real Cherokees understand that those things mean nothing. You see, we Cherokees have lots and lots and lots of documentation supporting our claims of our ancestry. Our Cherokee ancestors are found on every roll of the Cherokee Nation (30+ rolls!) dating back to before the removal and in all sorts of other documentation, including but not limited to claims against the US government for lost property; the Moravian missionary records; ration lists before and after the forced removal, etcÂ…yet your ancestors are found in NONE of those records.
But, your ancestors are found in plenty of historical records, and every time, they are found living as white people among other white people. Never are your ancestors ever found living among the Cherokees. Never, never, never, neverÂ…Â….yet you claim they were CherokeeÂ….
So, Ms. Warren, you see, it is not just your opponent who has questions. We Cherokees have questions too and those questions have yet to be answered by you. You see, for us Cherokees, this is not political. This is about the truth.
You have claimed something you had no right to claim — our history and our heritage and our identity. Those things belong to us, and us alone. These are not things we choose to embrace when they benefit us and then cast aside when we no longer need them, but that is what you seem to have done by “checking a box” for several years and then no longer “checking” it more recently, when apparently you no longer needed it.
And she says she's formed a special group to prove Warren is 32/32nds white, and that they'll be releasing documents establishing this soon.

The rule used to be that race derived from your mother. You could be 1/32 green, but if that's traced via your maternal line, you were considered 100% green.
Don't know if that's how the Cherokee do it.
Though if you think of Cherokee as a nation, you're Cherokee more by your contributions to the nation than by your blood. Like being an American, only more exclusive.

Its leads to these ridiculous (and utterly predictable) situations, where a. people get tremendous incentive to lie about their background, and b. where even legitimate genetic history leads to special treatment.

Not under the current administration, they aren't.
In fairness to Harvard, if they're supposed to take an applicant's word for their race at face value, then they didn't do anything "wrong" in hiring Warren as a minority.
She *did* go through not one, but TWO prior academic posts at other institutions as a "Native American" prior to THEIR hire, and its not entirely crazy to assume that she was previously vetted on this.
Ultimately, the fraud is on Warren's head. Now the question is, did she actually believe cock-and-bull family "stories" about having Indian blood, or did she just make up the whole thing to secure a job?

My great-grandfather was 1/8th Cherokee, and he had the drinking habit to prove it (though the Scots-Irish in him didn't help, either). That makes me 1/64th Cherokee (perhaps more - there might be native blood on my mom's side), makes my father 1/32nd Cherokee, and makes my grandmother and her numerous siblings 1/16th Cherokee.
Nevertheless, none of us, not even my grandmother and her 1/16th Cherokee siblings, have ever proclaimed to be Native American by virtue of an ancestor born sometime around 1820 who contributed a rather minor share of our DNA. Some of us occasionally joke about it, but we have never thought of oursleves as culturally or genetically anything other than European-Americans. We have no cultural links to that ancestor or her people and no living memory of her.
Now I *might* claim Native American ancestry some day if I can get a government handout out of it but then, unlike Elizabeth Warren, I think that affirmative action and quotas and set-asides are complete crocks of shit and would do anything I could to undermine them or eliminate them. Elizabeth Warren has no excuse.

I'd be highly surprised if she were fired over this, no matter how richly she deserves it.
For one thing, I understand she's tenured, and that makes firing very difficult (if not absolutely impossible).
But more to the point, Harvard can't really fire her, because then it makes THEM look like idiots:
a. For believing her cock-and-bull story about being an Indian without vetting her hire, and
b. For promoting her as Native-American for years, and
c. For subscribing to this sort of stupid affirmative action anyway.
So now its the "Emperor's New Clothes" where its in Harvard's interest to just pretend there is no issue whatsoever. They're not going to do jack squat until and unless some external force obligates them to (ie actual Congressional investigation, etc).
Again, I don't expect that to happen under the current administration, and if (hopefully when) Warren loses either her primary or the actual Senate election, they'll just quietly let this issue fade away.

Harvard is just (once again) turning itself into a laughingstock, that's all.
In terms of your Mexican heritage, one of my classmates in high school has/had a thoroughly Hispanic surname. . .because her paternal GRANDFATHER was from Spain. I don't think she even spoke a word of Spanish.
Anyway, she checked the appropriate box on her college applications, and was admitted to an Ivy League school, that she probably otherwise would not have been admitted to.
This is stupid, yes, but can I really fault her? Unlike Warren seems to have done, she didn't actually lie about anything, nor did she create the asinine rules. If those are the rules, why shouldn't she benefit? This whole kind of thing is just more reason why race-based admission/hiring is a bad idea.
I'm not even going to get into my other friend (now a professor) who is white as a sheet, but born and raised in South Africa. Which box should he check?
Posted by: Looking closely at May 16, 2012 11:02 AM (6Q9g2)
I wonder how many other libs/dems, probably in high academic positions and other places, thought nothing of checking that box. Maybe they didn't check the American Indian one, maybe they checked the American Samoan one.
What's so sad is how this is not shocking to the average person. Is everyone just plain dishonest?

If only... If only there were some sort of a meticulous scientific laboratory test which could be applied to an individual's genetic material, and which would tell us about their actual biological ancestry.
If we had a test like that, it would be very helpful in such cases. We could call it... gosh, I don't know... how about calling it a "DNA test"?

Mahoney explicitly referred to HarvardÂ’s plan as a model plan without a quota, and then compared it to MichiganÂ’s law school policy of considering race as one factor in admissions.
Mahoney said that to achieve diversity, “a plan like the Harvard plan...can be used as an effective means [to ensure diversity].”
But when Ginsburg later referred to HarvardÂ’s admissions policy, Justice Antonin Scalia dismissed the idea of HarvardÂ’s policy as a model.
“Did the Court know that when the Harvard plan was originally adopted, its purpose was to achieve diversity by reducing the number of Jewish students from New York that were getting into Harvard on the basis of merit alone?” Scalia asked.
Scalia was referring to evidence that in the early 20th century, Harvard used a quota system to restrict the admission of Jewish students, according to Climenko Professor of Law Charles J. Ogletree, who attended yesterdayÂ’s oral arguments. But Ogletree said that ScaliaÂ’s comment had little relevance to arguments today.
“The plan Harvard has talked about is quite the contrary,” he said. “It is a plan designed to promote diversity of all points of view and to create a strong class of students.”

#129: You're close. The key is having an ancestor on the Dawes Rolls, a census of the Five Civilized Tribes taken when the Bureau of Indian Affairs was established.
I've seen some other people questioning the legitimacy of the Cherokee genealogist due to her 7/32 blood quantum, but the Cherokee have always been open-minded about interbreeding with other races. It's never never been about blood quantum to them; it's about whether your ancestors were a part of the Cherokee experience.

Not just Harvard. Princeton hated Jews - but was forced to take a bunch because they were tops in their fields (especially as the Jewish mathematicians and physicists started pouring in from Europe) and Penn generally rejected Jews up until the mid 20th century. They all accepted a few, but as few as they could.
This is why CCNY used to be a premier school that produced Nobel winners (real Nobels, not the bullshit ones of today) and leading scientists by the bucketload.
Later, the racial quotas at the Ivies were used to exclude orientals.

And put us on her accreditation
She usurped our ways of life
And made a mockery of our strife
She never learned our native tongue
And taught her b*llsh*t to our young
And all the deeds we had to land
She sold to developers in Japan
Cherokee faker
Cherry key pie
So proud to steal
So proud to lie
She took 1/32 of the Indian nation
Chocked us up to her accreditation
And though her cheekbones might be high
She's no red man deep inside
Cherokee faker
Cherry key pie
So proud to steal
So proud to lie
And some day when she's learned
Cherokee Indians will return
Will return will return
Will return will return

He applied anyway because, after all, it was Notre Dame.
They admitted him.
Once the news of the miracle was absorbed and the holy water, candles and rosaries were put away, it came out that he had checked the "Native American" box on his application and filled up his essay with a lot of blarney about being a first generation college student, modest means, no one to show him the way, etc.. He said he thought that "Native American" just meant that he was born in America and not in Ireland.
True story.

I don't mean the Senate job she's trying to get, but her tenured Harvard faculty position.
Saw something close to that happen once. Our state representative was term limited out. He got the bright idea to run his wife to replace him. Two pensions in the family!!
Her day job was running the local library which she did pretty well. Everybody liked her. More than him, really. Well, she started sending out campaign materials using the Library postal permit, probably at his behest. Needless to say, all hell broke loose ending with her losing the primary AND getting fired from the Library.
Oops.
Lesson: Being content where you are can be a blessing. Don't get greedy (or cocky). Also, don't break the law.

They searched the whole Cherokee nation
Couldn't find a blood relation
Stripped away Liz Warren's lie
Left her hanging high and dry
Took away her ethnic scam
Whole diversity thing's a sham
And all the white men they did cheat
Will drag her party down to defeat
Cherokee deceitful ... Cherokee lie
So hard to forgive .. so hard to jibe

Exposed the whole equivocation
Voters now have reservations
Ans oh this caused my career to die
I'm feeling vengeful, can't deny
Cherokee deceitful, Cherokee lie
So hard to forgive, so hard to jibe
And maybe someday when they're burned
A sense of fairness will return
Will return, will return
