— Ace It's my sense this particular star has faded.
He doesn't say he would agree; just that he'd take Romney's call and listen to him.
Um, duh?
"This is an election with one voter, Mitt Romney. He gets to decide who he thinks should be the vice president of the United States," Christie said. "I love being governor of New Jersey, you can tell. But the fact is, if Gov. Romney picks up the phone and calls, you have to answer the call and listen at least."
I'm thinking more Jindal.
Sometimes Christie annoys me, as he did when he asked a reporter if he was "stupid" for asking an off-topic question. He then apologized for "that idiot."
It's not that I give a fig about the reporter's feelings. It's that I don't buy that a governor -- or a president like Obama -- can lay down the law as regards what questions can be asked.
Christie can declare he's only answering on-topic questions -- that's fine, and his right. But when he presumes to order citizens to only ask him questions he's willing to entertain, that demonstrates, to me, a mistaken understanding of the relationship between, as I think Justice Kennedy once said, so long ago, "government and the individual."
Oh, it's not disqualifying in and of itself. It's sort of a "Who cares?" kind of thing. But I don't expect that to play well. It seems gratuitously bossy.
Do I like the fact that he's hostile to the press? Sure. But I don't like the how-dare-you attitude about it.
As far as electoral math: If Romney even has a shot at winning New Jersey with Chris Christie, then Romney doesn't need Chris Christie or New Jersey, because other states (with less steep tipping points) will fall before New Jersey.
Does his brash New Jersey tough-guy persona win voters in other states? I don't know. I think the low-information, disengaged voters we need to win are the sorts of saps who say stupid things like "We need a more civil discourse" and "We need facts not personal attacks" and "We need to be less partisan." All of those safe, question-ducking things -- if you cannot make up your mind about what direction you'd like to see the country go in (in fact, you've never even bothered to think about the question too hard) it's always a nice, safe-sounding cop-out to say you'd like people to "work together" and "reach compromises."
And on that front: I think Christie is a compromiser (which conservatives don't like) but he has the image as a defiant partisan barb-thrower (which the squishy moderate muddleheads don't like).
So I just don't know if I love him for the job.

Jindal: yes, I really like him.
Rubio: star has faded a bit, but he is still a force to be reckoned with.
McDonnell: if Virginia is close, go with him.

I'm sick of hearing this. Conservatives aren't against compromise or those that engage in it. What politician / governor, senator, congressman, president has not compromised? It is impossible to engage in politics at any level without ever compromising.
The question is, what do you compromise? Do you compromise for the sake of compromise? Do you always start from half-way to your opponents position and then end up 4/5 to your opponent's position? Of, do you hold firm and get a compromise closer to your own position?
It makes me angry when conservatives, such as Ace, claim that conservatives don't like compromise. Let's use a liberalism and admit it is much more nuanced than that. We don't like republicans who pretend to hold conservative positions but always "compromise" to the liberal position.

Don't see Christie getting the call from Romney.
Romney/Rubio is the ticket I hope for, but I have a feeling Mitt will go bland and safe. Rubio is the future for the GOP.
Posted by: exceller at July 03, 2012 12:43 PM (ROGMG)
The problem is that people who say the above actually believe that if everyone tries hard enough and "compromises" we will actually find a way to cut taxes and increase spending. they simply don't understand how math and reality work.
But, part of that is that the press never actually reports facts, it only reports spin. Like when it discusses SS. there are facts as to when it runs out of money, but is never reported that way. It's always as if those facts are in dispute. As if the IOU's the gov't wrote to itself will somehow have actual intrinsic value some day.

Ah, the last gasp of the ABR crowd. Smarter than Romney? Really? You may disagree with his positions, and I really like Jindal (despite his Alfred E. Newman physiognomy) but there are precious few people smarter than Romney. I base that on his academic accomplishments and on his record in business.

They aren't citizens. They are the media. They set themselves up as better than we proles.
Maybe it's a portent of other issues with his attitude.
There is a difference with being a governor and that's the media is small and there may be issues with this particular reporter and Christie.
I still agree with you, Ace. Christie plays well in NY/NJ, but not otherwise.

Perhaps. But it does not mean that conservatives are against the very idea of compromise. Just the idea that the GOP uses the concept of compromise to sell out conservative values every single time.

Not to get into a debate about the merits of Romney, but his academic accomplishments hardly put him in the upper stratosphere of intelligence, and there are plenty of successful business people who are not all that smart. they may be smart at what they do, have a talent at what they do, are creative, or clever, etc., but not intelligent in the way you are talking about here.
I'm not saying Romney is not smart - I'm sure he is very intelligent. But let's not start talking about him as some kind of genius. If making money means you are in the top of all intelligence, then I guess most of Hollywood is brilliant.

What are the primary considerations when picking a VP ?
The Romney campaign has been pretty smart so far. I wonder if the will pick someone who can help them win a key state, someone who adds a little diversity to the ticket, an effective attack dog ?

YES.
Louisiana's Republican party is pretty well established in the state now while the Dems are uneven at best, which is why nearly all statewide offices are now Republican.
The damage done to the New Orleans machine by Katrina has seriously wounded the Dems because they can't just have the "graveyard vote" put them over the top anymore.

I'm with Sponge on this. Christie is GREAT for New Jersey, but he simply isn't VP material, temperamentally or otherwise. And he's only been Governor for a little over two years - not enough expericne to be comfortable with him as President if anything happened to Romney. That last is the same issue I have with Bob McDonnell, who I also adore as Governor. Picking either would neutralize the argument that Obama was unqualified to be President.
Right now I am leaning toward Portman. He has Washington experience, he is a budget expert, and he is very popular in Ohio and could really help deliver the state to Romney. Ohio has a GOP governor who would appoint his replacement, so we won't lose a Senate seat.

"I'm thinking more Jindal."
Yeah, me too, although I'm thinking Romney would be leery of selecting a veep candidate with anything approaching star quality. Jindal might outshine him on a shared stage and--from what I've seen--Romney and his people abhor anyone and anything that might somehow take the spotlight off the candidate. For example, during the primaries Romney engaged a debate coach, Brett O'Donnell, prior to the Florida debates. Romney's debate performance was so dramatically improved after O'Donnell's work with him that O'Donnell received a significant amount of press attention for Romney's dramatic turnaround, and was subsequently fired for it.
This is not the kind of thinking that lends itself to an inspired VP choice, so I think we'll get stuck with the blandest piece of whitebread imaginable.
Hello, Tom Pawlenty, you little firecracker you.

In the case of this election:
1. A non-controversial choice as not to rock the boat. Romney's doing well, so there's no need to go for a game-changer like Palin was for McCain.
2. A conservative to reassure the base. Romney's being supported because he's not Obama, but conservatives would like assurances that they won't be ignored.
3. A competent 2nd banana to show a contrast to Obama having Biden as impeachment insurance. A smart #2 capable of running things if necessary will be a stark contrast to the clown that is Sheriff Joe.
Jindal meets all of these things.

The IRS now gets to know about a small business’s entire payroll, the level of their insurance coverage — and it gets to know the income of not just the primary breadwinner in your house, but your entire family’s income, in order to assess/collect the mandated tax.
Plus, it gets to share your personal info with all sorts of government agencies, insurance companies and employers.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. “We expect even more lien and levy powers,” an IRS official says. Even the Taxpayer Advocate is deeply concerned.

I'm still hoping for Allan West, too.
He has a huge following across the country.....it would be a hat-tip to the Tea Party, and to our military...if Romney were to pick Allan West.
No other VP pick would be a better signal to 'the folks' that he will, in fact, repeal ObamaCare.
Picking a squish will not win Romney any new votes.

2. So, Jindal delivers what, Louisiana? No.
3. Chris Christie choice means CC can play attack dog while Romney plays Statesman.
4. Christie is over 50% in frickin NJ.
5. Christie does what Conservatives have been begging for for years - kicks ass.
6. With Christie over 50% in NJ could CC deliver NJ? Possibly.
CC's biggest issue is going to be with women. Women see him as gruff and, well, fat. My sister and mother, both strong conservatives don't like him for that reason. At the same time he really appeals to men for the same reason.
Why do I think CC has the inside shot? He had his head up Romney's backside long before anyone else. CC always denied POTUS talk saying he wasn't ready so we KNOW if Christie says "maybe" he means, yeah this could be happening.
Christie is the anti-Obama. He's fat, he isn't slick or good looking and he doesn't pander.
I think he has a better than 50% shot at it.

1. VP is a do nothing job. Why waste Jindal for 4 to 8 years doing absolutely nothing.
2. Since 1900, any VP that has not taken office during their term goes on to political oblivion except for 2 (Nixon and George HW Bush). The position generally means the end of your political career.
3. Mary Landrieu's (D-LA) Senate seat is up for election in 2014. Jindal can take that seat and knock a Democrat out of the Senate rather than sitting on his thumb in the VP seat in Washington.
4. Jindal has said he doesn't want it and won't accept it if offered.

Instead of a debate withe Biden, why not stick a mirror in front of slow Joe so he'll puff himself up, scream at his reflection and peck at it.

I'll agree with the Senators. I think the House could spare West to be President of the Senate.

Unknown is OK. Unknown and black makes Mittens look opportunistic.
I like West. He'd pick up some votes but he would also cost some. Other picks would net more votes.

I like Rubio....I really do.
But he has screwed the pooch lately, with all his talk about his own version of the Dream Act.
Romney would lose a lot of votes, with Rubio.
Romney's dad was born in Mexico.
If he needs to appeal to Latinos....then he can keep bringing that up.
Having Rubio on the ticket means that we've got two people, whose parents weren't born here.
How about trying to appeal to those of us whose ancestors have been paying taxes and dying for their country....for generations?

#164 Mr. Finn MCool re Bob Beckel
Watched his stand-in on Hannity last night - some blonde airhead who would NOT shut up or allow anyone to speak. Carlson had to admonish her over a break to behave civilly.
Fox should be able to find at least one liberal who can make an intellectual conversation. Although it is a truism that 99% of the liberals make the 1% look bad.

The only thing is that he's not at all a shrinking violet and will speak his mind. I don't know if the Romney campaign would want that.
That's my concern as well. Despite his color, the MFM has already painted him as polarizing, NTTAWWT. We conservatives love him, especially down here where there are lots of retired veterans.

193 Id love to have West. Can he simultaneously run for reelection in the house?
Yes....absolutely he can.
Then the Florida governor can appoint someone to fill that seat, until another election is held.

Romney is only here he is because the average voter sees him as a competent CEO as opposed to a conservative zealot. Romney nominating a conservative zealot as VP would effectively scuttle his campaign. I think he's smarter than that.

If he wants to "balance" the ticket he needs a conservative from the SE or SW. Personally I don't think that will help him, but it will not hurt him s picking Christie would.
If he really wants to help Romney should pick a RINO Senator from a conservative Red State to fill the useless warm spit job of VP and open up a slot for a Conservative to the Senate.

The Declaration of Independence, ratified by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, asserts that "governments derive their only just powers from the consent of the governed." A new Rasmussen Reports national survey finds that 70% of American Adults agree with that statement, up from 66% last year and up from 56% in 2008. Just 13% now disagree with this assertion, but 17% are undecided.

That is what he is looking at. Having someone that would be popular in a state where he already is ahead would be foolish.

Christie would be way too big a distraction for this year. Mitt would be completely overshadowed (in more ways than one, lol) and he'd NEVER get heard in the press. Christie is a carnival act.
Further, he's a Muslim sympathizer. I want him NO WHERE near the WH.

Memo from AP news stringer:
Dateline: Tampa, Fl
Date: August 29, 2012
Republican nominates Rep. Allen West as its choice to run for Vice-President.
(Scene shifts to NBC News executive editor's office during a high level meeting)
Steve Capus: "Whattzat you got there? Wow didn't see that coming. OK people! First impressions, go:"
Chris Matthews: "That extremist, religious nut Romney, just nakedly tried to sidle up closer to the bourgeoisie and make himself look more mainstream by tabbing this Tea Party jackbooted militarist, Allen West, as the GOP Veep Candidate.
David Gregory: "Agreed, but don't you think that message might be coming on a little too strong for a show like mine?"
Chris Matthews: "You may have a point, I was grasping for the happy medium between your network and mine. Did I mention that this guy is a sellout to his own race and turned the GOP into the Party of the Apes?
Lester Holt: "Hey now, just hold on there Chris, I resemble that remark, other than the part about being a Republican, of course. And didn't you just shamelessly steal that last line from Maher?"
Tom Brokaw: (abruptly starts from his dozing) "We really don't know alot about Obam... Allen West.... or what he will do."
Andrea Mitchell: "Just give me the complete exclusive on his nominating speech and I'll have it edited into a complete laff riot in time for the convention recap summary."
Brian Williams: "Back to this terrorist, er I man militarist, West. Maybe we could have something 'accidentally' blow up during one of his speeches? Make sure we keep the collateral damage to a minimum"
Dylan Ratigan: (stacks of moving cartons next to him) "This discussion is why I have to leave this network. We just aren't agressive enough in setting the narrative..."
Steve Capos: "Lots of great input here folks. Nothwithstanding Dylan's concerns, I suggest a balanced approach in our characterization of West, much like what worked so successfully in 2008. In looking at West's photograph here in front of me, he wears glasses and has an uncanny resemblance to a former African dictator who also was a low-level officer of his country's corrupt military. The course that the Narrative must take is therefore obvious and will be used at all times henceforth---Allen West is Seargeant Samuel Doe."
Andrea Mitchell: "I've already got the graphics department on the side-to-side blow-ups."
Lester Holt: "Oh boy. After this comes out, the Secret Service is going to have a design an extra detail just to protect Allen's ears."
