It is also questionable as to whether he committed suicide or not. He was using cyanide for some sort of plating he was doing. Now, you may wonder why a guy as smart as he was wd be stupid enough to poison himself accidentally, but this is the same guy who went to the cops to file a burglary charge against the gay lover of his gay lover. What I don't understand about Brit law and there is a 99% chance they are reporting it wrong, it takes more than a confession to convict or find someone guilty. So, I don't know why he was arrested to begin with. Another gay icon victim. Oh, there is a 90 min doc by either pbs or bbc on Bletchly Park which is very good.

118 Woke up this morning recalling a Christmas morning when our three kids were little. Mrs Claus & I had been up late, decorating the tree, stuffing stockings, putting presents under the tree, polishing off the milk and cookies. We slept soundly. And late. When we awoke, the little greedheads had already unwrapped all their gifts. No pix. No seeing their surprise. No sharing the moment. They didn't want to wake us, the eldest explained. Right. Thanks. Unclear on the whole family Christmas morning concept; where did I fail? And couldn't freak out at them: it's Christmas and they're just little kids. Decades later, I'm still grumpy about it. And sadly I remember that more than some others. This year. No tree. No gifts. No stockings on the mantle. No kids here for Christmas breakfast. Humbu... uh... I mean, may the spirit of the season fill you with joyous gratefulness for what it's all really about.

125 I took the dialect quiz last night and just took it again because I wanted to check something. Guess what? Several of the questions were different. Apparently there's a larger 'pool' of questions but you just get 25 each time you take the quiz. Last night two of the questions were about the large sandwiches and the night before Halloween. I chose "hoagie" and "Mischief Night" which are terms found almost exclusively in the Philly/South Jersey regions. So last night's result pegged me very strongly in the Philly area. But this morning's quiz omitted the sandwich question, so the results were more diffuse. This morning's map had a lot of yellow in the South, which is odd because I've never been in the South. It listed one of the three cities as Baltimore, which makes sense because both of my parents were from Maryland, so I undoubtedly picked up some things from them. I was born in Ohio, but Ohio showed light blue in both results. I guess I've lost most of my Midwesternisms. One interesting tidbit: I was originally taught to say "tennis shoes" but I remember consciously changing it to "sneakers" when I got a little older. Sure enough, "sneakers" is very dominant in the Northeast where my family moved. I was trying to fit in with the other kids in my new home.

Mine has a happier ending. A couple of friends and I rode our bikes to the dime store and left them propped against the wall outside while we went in to spend our allowance, probably fifty cents between the three of us. Kid came up to us and asked if the blue bike outside belonged to one of us. 'My friend borrowed it, but it's OK he brought it back.' He had, too.  I always wondered how he had been 'persuaded' and if the informant had done the persuading.

174 Well, that was funny that HH commented immediately after I mentioned Harry Hopkins. Because there was some dispute during the hearings in the 1940s over whether he signed his memos "HH" or HLH".

“If you’re working here and in the middle of the day you just stopped and siad, ‘You know what? I want to get something, but I don’t know – I don’t know exactly what I’m going to get, but I’m just going to stop working until I get something,’” Obama began. “And I’m going to shut down the whole plant until I get something…”

“You’re fired,” an audience member volunteered.

“You’d get fired,” Obama agreed. “Right?”

Probably one of the densest fogs I ever witnessed happened on Christmas morning when I lived in L.A.

I was leaving work, and since I lived very close, was walking home. Got to a major intersection, and could barely see the lights. And this was standing on the sidewalk.

So I just listened to hear if there was any cars coming, and then just crossed.

Have never seen fog that thick ever again.

184 I'm currently reading "American Betrayal" by Diana West. Two words: Harry Hopkins. Posted by: rickl at December 25, 2013 11:43 AM (sdi6R) Thanks! I'm going to have to read that. I am currently reading the archives of H-Net or more specifically H-HOAC. It's all academics and writers. Even those who do not buy into the stalinist bullshit are pretty left or pretty obnoxious. Horowitz, Radosh, and a few others act like they have some sort of territorial claim on our past. They do not. Check it out: http://goo.gl/Yb1MD5 H-Diplo is also good for laughs. It's fun to see these elitists argue the unarguable.

190 I loved the VDH media piece. I have been thinking similar thoughts about the end of media credibility, but VDH nails it with so many perfect examples... almost any one of which would have resulted in serious talk of impeachment if the President was one merely elected by the people, without being adored by the media. As far as I am concerned it is too late for the media to salvage anything of their reputation - they have burnt their brand to the waterline and now they can ride it to the bottom. Good riddance to bad garbage.

194 Is VDH attempting to shame the media? That's so weak. The Left is on the verge of total power; why should they keep up the pretense of being independent?

Hanson's a smart man and he knows this country is finished. He just can't say it out loud as he would get Derbed by spineless crap weasels at NRO.

Just read between the lines. He's not shaming the media, he's telling you that our Republic no longer exists.

195 That dialect quiz is not "extremely accurate." It pinpoints my speech as Milwaukee/Chicago, when I was born and raised in Seattle, lived in Asia for ten years, and now have made Texas my forever home. I've never been within 1500 miles of Chicago and I have zero relatives by blood or marriage from whom I would have picked up that dialect. It was a hoot to take though!

198 Took the dialogue quiz and it did indeed turn out accurate. It indicated a speech pattern centered around west coast Fla and Philadelphia PA. I was born in Orlando and lived a dozen years in NJ, working in Center City.

199 On the hunter who saw the kangaroo - one time was observing a group of mule deer Ina wheat field south of Spokane. They kept looking at some thing so I looked over and saw a reindeer. Wearing a red halter with gold lettering. This was the day after Christmas several years ago. Two of my young nieces saw it too or I would have had venison for dinner. True story.
