The FBI withheld its findings about Gen. David Petreaus' affair from the White House and congressional leaders because the agency considered them the result of a criminal investigation that never reached the threshold of an intelligence probe, law enforcement sources said today.The sources said agents followed department guidelines that generally bar sharing information about developing criminal investigations. The FBI is also aware of its history under former director J. Edgar Hoover of playing politics and digging into the lives of public figures. As one official said, the rules are designed to protect people (both private and elected officials) when negative information about them arises in the course of a criminal investigation that is not a crime.
The FBI's focus was on whether laws were broken, in this case whether federal cyber-harassment statutes were violated. The sources emphasized that Petraeus himself was never the focus of the investigation, nor did it turn up evidence he broke any law.
So no one ever told the president because the rules, allegedly, said that people couldn't share the information.
Meanwhile, everyone is leaking all over the place on this story, and to reporters, not the president. So we're to believe that "key sources" don't mind a little bit of leaking to reporters, but they observed their obligation to keep criminal probes strictly secret when it came to letting the President know?

1) The base, the real base needs to drive what candidates we end up with. I mean, putting aside all preconceived notions, was anyone watching the primary debates and didn't come away with the conclusion that Mitt was the ONLY ONE ON STAGE THAT COULD FUCKING TALK. Yes, there was an Executive Order in September of 2009 (signed by.....blank out) that was to forbid the CIA from running these sorts of "prisons" or "stockades" or "detention centers" off shore because we might ohurt someon's feelings and the Europeans would have a snit about it.

See, this is the history of the CIA. They actually are pretty loyal in their own peculiar way, but then when the politicians decide that what they just told the CIA to do (like what JFK and his brother RFK told them to do in the early '60's) is actually "bad optics", well then these bumbling but well intentioned patriots get to fall on their swords for President and country, or whatever people fall on their swords for these days.

Petraeus wasn't charged because there wasn't enough evidence is one way to put it. Agents were unable to determine a crime had been committed by Petraeus.
What SHE was doing is not talked about much, and if SHE were committing crimes they would still be sticking to the story that Petraeus was in the clear, because all he was doing was sleeping with a person who might or might not be guilty of something.
Which is crazy.
By the way, where did those classified documents come from, and how did she get them and why did she have them? If Petraeus didn't give them to her, did she take them? Or if they were given, who gave them?
