— Ace From a soon-to-be-released... um, ebook.
“It became an open secret that he was using painkillers in sufficient dosages to keep him standing through the two-hour debates,” write the authors of “Inside the Circus.”
Well, it's plausible. Doesn't make it true.
One anecdote is that a couple of campaign managers for rival campaigns heard him belting out "I've Been Working On The Railroad" in the bathroom.
Eh.
One thing I think this illustrates is how subject to chance events are. I hear a lot of suggestions that "The Establishment" kept certain people from running (Palin, of course, and Christie, and Jindal, and Pence, and etc.) and "engineered" Mitt Romney's apparent triumph. A push here, a whispered word there, a finger on the balance over this way, that sort of thing.
This whole tendency to ascribe every series of events to a malignly calculating super-intelligence is as silly as ascribing sickness to spirits. It's an attempt to turn a complicated series of events into a brief, digestible Narrative which is nice and simple (but also wrong).
And it's also an attempt at anthropomorphization of bad luck. You can't be angry at bad fortune, because bad fortune is not a human being with sentience and moral agency. You can hate bad luck, but it's not really like hating a human being. It's a lot more satisfying to postulate that this was not Bad Fortune, but Malevolent Design, and hate the conveniently-human designers behind it all.
This is a lifetime ago, but cast your minds back to August 2011: Perry was not only beating Romney, but curb-stomping him, with virtually every group.
He seemed invincible. All he had to do was show up to a debate and offer a reasonable accounting of himself and appear to have it together and he'd have been the nominee in a walking, wrapping it up by the end of January.
But he didn't. And possibly that was due to his recent back-surgery and the painkillers he needed just to stand for so long.
A late start in thinking about the presidency, a very ill-timed surgery... And history is changed.
And that's how things really work. Not a Conspiracy by an Elite (which, of course, is routinely denigrated as pretty f'n' stupid and incompetent, except when it comes to Conspiracy), but one chance event leading to another, and so on, until unpredictable outcomes occur.

I know there was some speculation in the comments hereabout the pain killer thing at the time of the debates. It wouldn't surprise me. But, again, the only one to blame, if there's any blame to be had, would be Perry. If he was not physically capable of handling the debates with clear mental focus due to the pain killers, well, that's a factor that should have been considered before making his run.
Didn't Jindal decide not to run on the grounds that he wanted to still be governor and thought he needed more experience? I sort of remember something along those lines.

I blame Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain for the sorry cast of characters we ended up with. Neither one of them had any busniess running for president and they both sucked all the air out of the race for far too long.
I won't argue that Palin never had any intention of running. She proved all her critics right so it doesn't really matter now if she might have run if Bachmann had stayed out if it. I'll keep that little rationalization for myself since I don't want to admit I supported her for almost 3 years for nothing.
Cain? That joke. All the people that fawned over him as the only true conservative are now falling all over themselves for Santorum.
I hate people. I had hope for conservatives. Not anymore. They're just as stupid as liberals.

Governor Perry has no one to blame for his failure to win in the primaries but himself. I was pulling for him, and would have probably been a pound in the lawn sign and walk the precinct volunteer for him. The downside is that he possibly discouraged others from running by announcing his candidacy.
We won't know what could have been, but now, barring a disaster we are stuck with Willard Romney, Mr. North Eastern Elite himself.

In earlier generations Perry wouldn't have been able to campaign at all most likely. Or just been up front and admitted he can't stand for more than 20 minutes at a time.
The best debate I've seen was Cheney vs Lieberman in 2000. Sitting down. Having a reasonable, but forceful, debate on ideas.

33 Who cares? I'm (still) a Perry fan, and I don't think it matters why his message didn't sell- it didn't sell. There's no use trying to "explain it" at this point.
I'm still a Perry fan too, AllenG. ....I don't think it was a case of "his message didn't sell", because Romney and Santorum have been shamlessly stealing parts of Perry's message.
I think that Perry probably didn't forsee being attacked so viciously from his own side. ....He wasn't prepared to punch people in his own party, like they were punching him.
The back surgery? He probably thought he could heal up on the run. Guys are like that. .....But I know from experience, that all it takes is making a movement in a wrong way...and that can set you back, wipe out whatever healing has happened and put you back into serious pain territory.
*sigh* ....I still think that Perry would make a great President.
People can say what they will about his 'gaffes' and his 'Ooops' moment. ....The thing is, even when Perry was struggling to get out what he was trying to say....what he actually had to say was still a lot better than what I've been hearing from the other guys running. ....And he's the one with the record of doing what he says.

Obama did not become President through skill or ability for the most part. He got there on luck and timing. Which is true of a lot of politics, on the right and left. Had it been 2008 instead of 2010, Mike Castle would have easily beat what's her name in the primary and would now likely be a Senator. If this were 2008 instead of 2012, I would probably be more appreciative of Romney, instead of being disappointed that he will be the nominee.
Timing and luck are quite a bit of it. Which is also why Perry had to jump in - the timing lucked exactly right for him and one can't let a chance like that get away. Unfortunately, it did not turn out well for him, he did not have luck on his side. He was all gaffes and mistakes.
Even Romney's campaign is based on timing and luck. timing in that Obama is so bad, even a mediocre candidate like Romney has a chance at beating him. Luck in that no decent GOP opponent got in the primary, leaving it his for the taking.

Jindal will have his day. He's toiling away and, from what I understand, doing well in LA. As soon as Obama is kicked out, the oil from the Gulf will flow as will regional jobs and money. He'll be ascendant with reasonable seasoning. By then we'll have forgiven the GOP 2009 State of the Union address and be looking for competent national executives. Jindal is a smart guy, and we desperately need them.

As far as the "Establishment" their guilt is not in supporting Romney early and often, it was in not working harder to make sure someone better ran. They had three F*ing years to sort out this situation, and the best candidates they could come up with was a lover or Ethanol Mandates that dropped out before the first race, a guy who would have made a better debate showing with a cardboard cutout, and a guy who thinks mandates are the way to go AT THE STATE LEVEL.
Dude rly? 3 years and the most critical election in recent history, that was the top shelf you establishment types could come up with? It is an embarrassing F*ing failure.

The Republican "Establishment" is what it is, which isn't to say it controls EVERYTHING, just that it/they have undue influence over events, due to having shedloads of money, positions of power and their voices in the media.
Ask them, they'll tell you they exist, but they consider themselves to BE the party, so it's not like they're hiding anything.

Furthermore, how exactly does the establishment "come up with" better candidates? My first choice (Ryan) didn't want to run. Neither did Daniels or Christie. Perry really is something of a village idiot, I really don't think you can blame the whole thing on painkillers. Also, his record was a mixed bag and the open border stuff really spooked me. I also don't know how you can call Mitt a flip flopper when Perry was Al Gore's campaign chairman in Texas and praised HillaryCare.
Bottom line, Perry would have easily lost to Obama, and in terms of policy, I see it as a push between Romney and Perry, with Mitt wrapped in a MUCH more electable package.

My blood runs burnt orange. There's an Okie I happen to know, who I'd like to stab in the neck with a fork. A real cocksucker.
Question: Do I have to wait until Texas wins the 2012 Texas-OU game, or can I just go ahead and do it now?

Meh, Hillary was invincible, too. The primary/debate process is like gravity or water -- just waiting for one to make a mistake. And he's my governor and I like him.
Gov. Perry could have requested one of those way-cool Dick Cavett Show high-backed swivel bar-stool looking chairs.
Or been carried onto the stage on his sick-bed like Jim Bowie. THAT would have been some stagecraft.

Percocets at the very least. My sister still takes straight oxycodone after some botched back surgeries and they confuse the hell out of you. It's probably what Perry was taking.

The hydrocodone in vicodin makes me queasy and itchy. Percocets are better pain relievers (for me) and are stronger than vicodins. For either one, try to get the doctor to prescribe the ones with the least acetaminophen (375 mg IIRC) because it's a horrible medication to take more than two days in a row. It's very hard on the liver.

Perry was too much like Sarah Palin to be favored by the self-perceived king of republicans, Karl Rove. You will no doubt recall how he started the rumor of "disagreement" between Bush and Perry.
I vehemently agree with ABO (Anybody but Obama), but Romney is not only an unmitigated fool but, in my personal opinion, merely an Obama-lite. I can tell you the people in the part of the country I live in are fed up with the entire GOP because they are acting exactly like the loons on the left...their opinion and wishes are the only thing that count.
I also far from convinced that Romney can beat the Marxist in the WH. If the GOP doesn't win, it will mean not only the complete destruction of the country but the end of the GOP as well. People are fed up with both!

Yep... history is made of weird things...
Napoleon, upon graduating from Military school, sent letters all around Europe looking for a Job, and got a scathing letter back from some secretary in Russia, saying he was not qualified to be a Private... and some say this was the start of his disdain for the Russian army...
Hitler was hit by his own sides Mustard Gas in WW1.. and spent months in the hospital... could have easily died...
Some say Patton was on his way back to America, to run for President when he had a car accident and died...
History is full of accidents...

It may not have been a "conspiracy by the Elite", BUT: if it had been Cain who had bad debates, Hannity, Rush, Levin, etc would've defended him. These conservative media leaders became Herman's personal defense attorneys 24/7 over his cheating ways but they never lifted a finger in defense of Perry. If they had, Perry would have overcome it.

The Republican Party allowed Perry perpetual passes as "winning" any debate by rolling his eyes and tapping his toe while his Gubernatorial PRIMARY opponent mopped the floor with his scalp even. Yes, the laugh track status quo cheered Perry as if "winner". Only so long as his Party insiders can fix the media and ballot boxes. But hardly the makings for the national GOP ticket. Unless you're stuck on that bandwagon being another fool in a crowd of fools, crowning the "electable" king of fools [insert the status quo politically correct name].
"A late start in thinking about the presidency, a very ill-timed surgery... "
Bad Judgment does not a good president make. And given his high ratings with his "late start", the timing was working on Perry's behalf. So long as he remained a poster boy for "success", rah-rah! Exposure melted his facade.
Not a Conspiracy? Perry conspired towards his potus campaign, promising that he only wants to be Governor of Texas in order to get his final electoral victory, promising to not campaign for POTUS while in office as Governor. If anything, Perry's potus campaign announcement was premature, no "late start".
