Clint F'n' Eastwood Headed To Tampa??!
— Ace

Eastwood?

A well-placed Republican source tells Townhall that Oscar-winning director and actor Clint Eastwood will travel to Tampa, Florida to attend Mitt Romney's nominating convention this week. As the news media scrambles to identify the so-called "mystery speaker" scheduled to address GOP delegates on Thursday evening, some have speculated that the iconic Hollywood figure could fit the bill.

I have a couple of caveats about this story: First, it's just one source. People think they know things, but then they don't.

Two, it was filed at 3:04 am. Liquor may have been involved. On one hand, liquor loosens tongues; on the other hand, liquor loosens everything.

It's a nice idea but I wouldn't get too invested in it.

Here's one reason to think it's real: Clint Eastwood doesn't talk a lot about politics, but one thing that really steams his beans is entrepreneurial litigation, under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The racket here is that lawyers hire disabled people to go to businessplaces, to see if there is any grounds for suit. They're looking for a reason to sue -- to greenmail a business owner and make a quick buck, usually by settlement.

Now if you combine that feeling he already has, having been a victim of such entrepreneurial litigation, with Obama's "You didn't build that" -- something which resonates strongly with anyone who's ever owned a business -- and it becomes pretty believable that Clint Eastwood had a "Do you feel lucky, punk?" moment over Obama.

It's all well and good to speak of the deleterious effects of regulation on businesses in the abstract. It's another thing to speak in detail about your own real life horror stories.

21 All Clint has to do is a basic speech on America, on getting things done, on the future, and on turning the economy around and he'll do fine. He won't be very political aside from "and that's why I'm voting for Romney." Clint has a crapload of good will built up, and unless he goes crazy up there, it will make a big difference not just with viewers but with actors back home. If he's willing to stand up and say it maybe its okay if I vote that way too...

If he speaks to self-sufficiency and getting our house in order on spending it will be a winner.  I just hope he follows up with some interviews with the standard MSM types.

As for not having political insight- I'm not sure where someone pulled that, he's not exactly ignorant about wold affairs, after all.

In fact, what makes him a pretty good choice is exactly the fact that a lot of people think he leans Liberal.  Between that and his star power (as some mentioned earlier, Hollyweird owes more of its international success to Clint Eastwood than to all the modern "stars" combined), you can see why it would make a compelling case to those "on the fence" voters.

95 eastwood isn't just an actor. He's a small business owner. He owns restaurants and hotels and of course Malpasso, his production company. He's also famously a tightwad. One of his rules was (this was back in the 80s) never spend more than $50,000 for a script, which is pretty damn cheap (and sometimes that cheapness kind of showed in his movies). But the point of that is that he's a guy who isn't all dreamy and disconnected from reality. He understands that Money Received must exceed Money Expended or else there is no point of working.

Sure he is.  Don't worry Davie boy, you'll soon have a place at the table with MSDNC or CNN.  You are white, aren't you?

210 Frankly, I can't say that I'm a big fan of this whole "mystery speaker" thing, to begin with. It's silly and childish.

I Agree. If they do it, I also hope it's not another hack politician, especially some small-scale Democrat who has Seen the Light.

Eastwood might give the MFM a target for potshots, and we don't need that. But I'm sure he'd do a better job than most at the podium.

Now, Larry the Cable Guy, who loves America, turning to Romney and simply saying "get 'er done!" would rock, big-time.

@209 - it was a joke!  Because other people laughed!  See?  Just kidding!  La-lee-dee.

Now, let's get back to serious journalizing.  Like Romney's embrace of The Birther Movement.

TLJ has land in the Eagleford Shale region. Right now, bonus prices are about $3,000 per acre with a 25% royalty. A typical Eagleford well is producing around 700 barrels per day. Oil is around $100 per barrel. That equates to around $17,500 in royalty per well, EACH DAY.

Chesapeake is also known in the industry to pay higher bonus than market value. Either way you look at it, TLJ isn't a righty, he just ain't crazy.

When you have a lot of money, you have to fine places to invest it. >>>But the point of that is that he's a guy who isn't all dreamy and disconnected from reality. Uh, he supported & voted for Obama. Hell yeah he's disconnected from reality. He's a geezer with hot wives a third of his age, so again he's disconnected from reality.

Yep.  No excuse, at all.  No one who has any passing like, even, of America could have ever thought of voting for the Indonesian Dog-Eating Retard.  A vote for Barky was a big fat vote against America.  That's all there ever was to it and it was never hidden from anyone.

246 while I might love Clint Eastwood, there is no excuse for anyone with a brain voting for Obama. Many older people blamed McCain and his buddies for S&L scandal back in the late 80s there was no way they were going to vote for him. Additionally my parents and many of their friends who had never voted D wanted to "see a black man as president before I die". My dad was especially prescient on that count. But both of those novelties do not exist for folks of that generation. Having someone their age say "yea, I voted for the dumbass, too. F'ing oops! Now lets fix it" would be a good thing.

He's a libertarian more than a conservative, but he did endorse McCain.

252 So Eastwood didn't vote for Obama?

Posted by: Redd at August 29, 2012 02:00 PM (w062R)

253 Eastwood did a huge amount of damage to his brand with the GM ad during the Super Bowl.  Maybe he realizes it and wants to do something about it.  He is old enough to be thinking about his legacy.

But still he let himself be used as a campaign prop for Obama's re-election so it is hard to square that with speaking at the Republican Convention.  Does he really have so bad a tin ear for politics that he didn't realize what he was doing when he made the ad?

Posted by: Voluble at August 29, 2012 03:05 PM (qYvEa)

254 No Redd - it is not racism, it is the outcome of three decades of affirmative action. Many of my parents friends who were registered R and had not voted D were black.

257 Is Clint Eastwood conservative?  Twenty years ago, I would have said "He sure is."

Now, I'm not so sure.  The last movie he made that I saw was "Flags of Our Fathers" in which the entire US Armed Forces were basically portrayed as fools, guilty drunks, idiotic (and soon dead) gung-hoers or otherwise anything other than heroic.  And WWII was a war we should have avoided.  No war is ever a good thing, ever.  Let the enemy just roll over us, it makes us look noble.

The last two decades of his work look like apologies for the Dirty Harry movies, and pleas to the NYT for nice reviews.  I'd honestly expect him to show up at the Dem convention first.
