— Ace Actually, it's too bad he committed to this, as a report on CNN suggested the word was "cold" (as in "it's f'n' cold out" -- which it was on that night).
Still, you read it here first, thanks to Idea Catchers (with @rdbrewer4 posting it).
But an expert says the word is "punks." (I mean another expert-- our own expert weighed in, and nailed it.)
George Zimmerman told his lawyers that he whispered "punks," not a racial slur, in the moments before he shot Trayvon Martin, his attorneys told CNN on Thursday...
Zimmerman attorneys Hal Ulrig and Craig Sonner told CNN their client told them that he said, "F---ing punks."
Forensic audio expert Tom Owen, who analyzed 911 recordings, agreed the garbled word that raised controversy was "punks," not the racial slur some people said they heard
When Owen, chairman emeritus of the American Board of Recorded Evidence, used a computer application to remove cell phone interference, the word became clearer, he said. After discussions with linguists, he said he became convinced that Zimmerman said "punks."
Now, watch CNN dodge a correction, like every other media organization refusing to own up to its mistakes in this case:
CNN also enhanced the sound of the 911 call, and several members of CNN's editorial staff repeatedly reviewed the tape but could reach no consensus on whether Zimmerman used a slur.
They couldn't reach a consensus? That's funny, when I watched it, CNN's reporter and sound "expert" were both pretty damn sure he said "coons."
Now, that's what made it to the TV.
Is CNN now telling us that behind-the-scenes they could reach no "consensus," and yet permitted a defamatory report to run anyway?
Hey CNN -- that's not a good position to stake out for yourselves in a defamation lawsuit. If you ran this report, ginning up the "racial hatred" storyline while behind the scenes you doubted it, that is pretty much "malice" right there.
You are permitted to get away with mistakes if made with the good-faith belief you were right, even if you turn out to be wrong.
If you're saying you actually doubted this report was accurate, but ran it anyway?
That's a problem, CNN.
Maybe you should abandon this claim and just correct the record. Might be cheaper for you.

Emphasis mine.
Note: "Some people." Not "We," not even "Our anchor," or "Mr. So-and-so, our guest." Nope: "Some people." Because, you see, they're not biased. They say so, so it must be true. And if they're not biased, and he didn't say 'coons,' then they couldn't possibly have heard that word.
I f*cking hate the "passive voice," and I f*cking hate the MFM.

SFGoth: DIAF. Some of us are okay with the idea of neighbors watching out for each other. It's too bad for the "punk" in question that he didn't consider the guy he was punching might have a gun.

So its your contention that its OK for Trayvon, to walk around a neighborhood he does NOT live in... but is not OK for Zimmerman to walk around in the neighborhood he DOES live in?
And I guess I should no longer keep an eye on my neighborhood, which has mostly 70-80 year old retired people in it... and call the cops if I see somthing weird???
and of course... self defense is totaly out of the question...
Its funny that it takes a Village to raise a child, so the States involvement in my Kids is OK... but it does NOT take a Village to defend a Village?

On a similar note, Dallas Area Rapid Transit (the Dallas County mass transit system) has had a rash of shootings at rail/bus stations. Their response was first to talk up their safety record, and then to ask legal CCW holders not to carry weapons.
Amazingly, that didn't cut down on the violence.
So now their big idea is that they'll put cameras up at all of their stations and having someone (in a central location) monitoring the cameras.
So they'll know right away when you've been shot, I guess.

unfortunately, the media too often remains immune from reaping what they sow, but the other actors in this comedy, from my ivory tower, appear to be on-schedule with the harvest.
my amazement never ceases with how the left believes attachment of the word "justice" to any terribly unsupportable effort somehow legitimizes their illegal crusades (e.g., "reproductive justice" = infanticide, "environmental justice" = scientific/economic dismemberment, "social justice" = selective bigotry, "hoodie justice" = lynch a hispanic with utter disregard for due process).

I have wondered if the 1-2 punch of, "well its Romney and he isn't going to do it" and then Breitbart leaving woke us all up to the realization noone is coming. Its just us. We have to take on the media. We have to take on education. We all have something we can do. Editing a wiki. Saving a video. #StopTweeting etc..
I feel like this has been a mental/emotional and generally transformational hurdle we needed to cross that we all had put of for a very long time. Breitbart made us not afraid to take them on. He taught us we could win, losing was still better then not trying, and that they are old and soft and not used to being challenged. For that I will honor his memory.

Two, we have TV's in my office with news running all day. Just looking and seeing the pictures they posted, without doing ANY research on either man, gave me the impression that some mexican convict killed a 12 year old.
The ENTIRE news media fucked this story up SO BAD, I refuse to watch news channels anymore. They don't report news. They make (attempted) entertainment much like hollywood.

I'm also in OK and was thinking the same thing. The media tried to attribute a 1970's/1980's racial slur to a guy that was born in the mid-80's. That makes about as much sense as saying Zimmerman couldn't hear the police dispatcher because his 8-track was turned up too loud.
I lived in North Florida/South Georgia for several years in the '90s. I've never heard anyone say it since the late '80s.

69 I know why this story is a story and why we are discussing it, but in the context of the world's problems, this is bullshit. And not only is it bullshit, but it is playing into the democratic play book.
While I agree that this is a distraction.....drummed up to distract us from much more important things going on.....
The Left is already using this story as a way to declare that 'Stand Your Ground' laws are flawed.....and should be eliminated. ....Even the dickhead OReilly has taken up this mantra.
In Oklahoma, we call our similar law the "Make My Day Law" which affords us the right to defend ourselves with deadly force, if we believe our life is in danger. .....I would really hate to lose this law....especially in these troubling times.

This is my last entry at “AudioForensicExpert.com”, the blog of Ed Primeau, one of the voice “experts” who told the Orlando Sentinel that it wasn’t Zimmerman screaming on the 911 tapes:
1. Brad says:
April 2, 2012 at 9:13 pm
Since you were able to clear up the Audio, did he use the word ‘coons’?
Audio Forensic-Expert says:April 2, 2012 at 11:47 pm
yes he did.
Now, Zimmerman’s attorney says the word was “punks”. This has been confirmed by various experts along with Tom Owen. Apparently, the symphony that is the human voice is a bit too complex for your trained ear.
As itÂ’s doubtful you will ever find another client for voice forensics, perhaps piano tuning would be the best alternative.

Zimmerman said so in his 9/11 call. He had no reason to lie at that time.

Really? He said he was chasing Martin down and he was gonna bust a cap in him?
All I heard was that he was following him to see where he went and lost sight of him

Certainly sounded like "punks" the first time I heard it, but I was willing to concede that our brains might just impose a word we're predisposed to hearing.
Fits with the assumption that Zimmerman wasn't just following Martin so he could give him a flower, but if anyone is looking for any meaning beyond that, they're not being responsible.

Wasn't our 'make my day law' passed back in the 80's, Soona? ....Seems like we were one of the first states to do it.
There's no way to know how many countless lives have been saved by having this law in place. ....They don't keep statistics on such things. Especially when pulling out a firearm makes the assailant back down and run, and no one even is hurt.

My neighbor sent me the article by Shelby Steels titled "The exploitation of Trayvon Martin"
The headline reads
"
The absurdity of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton is that they want to make a movement out of an anomaly. Black teenagers today are afraid of other black teenagers, not whites."
At first, it sounded OK. And than I got to the part that read
"
Two tragedies are apparent in the Trayvon Martin case. The first is obvious: A teenager—unarmed and committing no crime—was shot dead. Dressed in a "hoodie," a costume of menace, he crossed paths with a man on the hunt for precisely such clichés of menace. Added to this—and here is the rub—was the fact of his dark skin.
Maybe it was more the hood than the dark skin, but who could argue that the skin did not enhance the menace of the hood at night and in the eyes of someone watching for crime. (Fifty-five percent of all federal prisoners are black though we are only 12% of the population.) Would Trayvon be alive today had he been walking home—Skittles and ice tea in hand—wearing a polo shirt with an alligator logo? Possibly. And does this make the ugly point that dark skin late at night needs to have its menace softened by some show of Waspy Americana? Possibly."
I honestly couldn't get this neighbor to understand that half of what was in that last part was simple unproven conjecture on the Authors part.
Her response was that I was just looking for little details to derail the discussion. I told her that I didn't consider the statement that Zimmerman was on the hunt for a black kid wearing a Hoodie to take down, and found it in Saint Trayvon was a small and trivial detail.

138 Pretty soon a Martin/Zimmerman situation will be even less likely in Oklahoma. We're about to pass Open Carry here. Martin would have been less likely to attack if he thought his victim might kill him.
Open Carry will be great. ....Although, I predict that it will become sort of a fashion statement. Heh.
It's pretty nice the way it is already. ....I've been told by a LEO that, simply having a firearm in my truck, which is legal to 'transport', makes it legal to use it away from home if my life is in danger.

"We can't discount (Zimmerman's) story, based on — not evidence we put anywhere, not testimony we put in anybody's mouth — but testimony of witnesses who were there, that called, and the physical evidence that's there. You can't refute it," Lee said in the early interview. "The conclusions that are drawn from the basic information is that George Zimmerman shoots a 17-year-old kid with a bag of Skittles and an Arizona iced tea can. And you know, those are facts: George Zimmerman did shoot Trayvon Martin, and Trayvon Martin did have a bag of Skittles and an Arizona iced tea.
"The fact that he had a bag of Skittles and an Arizona iced tea does not have anything to do with the facts of why George Zimmerman thought he needed to use deadly force."
