— Ace "Interdisciplinary." You know, I took some "interdisciplinary" courses. They were sort of interesting, but they were without much rigor -- sort of interesting bullshit sessions with a reading list. When you're pulling little bits and pieces from five different areas of scholarship you're going to be pretty glib and facile about each of them.
Anyway, I was going to knock such things but then I realized, part of the way along, "Hey, those were kind of interesting."
Oh right I was talking about something else. A major in pot.
A public university located in one of California's prime pot-growing regions has formed an academic institute devoted to marijuana. The Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research at Humboldt State University plans to sponsor scholarly lectures and coordinate research among 11 faculty members from fields such as economics, geography, politics, psychology and sociology.
Not mentioned: horticulture. I wonder if they'll actually teach pot-growing. But then, it's one of those things you don't have to teach, eh? Work as play. People do it on their own.
This is something really driving me crazy about "scholarship," this tendency to take people's hobbies and interests and craft some kind of faux discipline around them.
Aren't people just supposed to tend to their hobbies and interests on their own? Do they need an allegedly academic wrapper around Porn Studies or the like?
Not only does that tendency cheapen (down to nothing) the idea of scholarship, but it also indirectly pushes an insidious line of reasoning: that one can only learn or become more interesting (or interested) via a formal academic process with class credits and lecture halls and so on. Didn't we used to have reading clubs and other special-interest clubs for this sort of thing, this quasi-scholarly socializing/hobbyist interest thing? Isn't the "academicization" of stuff that's really Just Interesting Things kind of reducing instead of expanding the pursuit of Interesting Things? I'm starting to think that the academy is too important to be left to academics.
Anyway:
"If anyone is going to have a marijuana institute, it really should be Humboldt State," economist Erick Eschker, the institute's co-chair, told the newspaper. .
Wink.

And if so...wouldn't that be subsidizing and furthering the cause of nationwide legalization?
But if the Feds deny student loans to some areas of study, then that would be discrimination.

Hey at Humboldt State in Northern California marijuana is "the" important local crop. If UC Davis and Cal State Fresno can have enoculture and viticulture programs, and if a little podunk community college like Walla Walla Community College can have a two year winemaking program, why can't Humboldt State teach the local "farmers". I mean that's what all the "A&M" land grant schools did.
And of course San Francisco State could have a program for tranny hookers, but I digress.

Alcohol causes more violence than weed. Why are you not worried about drinking?
Humans have had 10000 years of evolution adjusting to alcohol in their culture. You can down three beers a night every evening of your life and never have an adverse affect on your life. As a matter of fact, statistically you'll live longer than a non-drinker.
You smoke three joints a night, you will get chronic effects from the weed. I am all for legalizing weed*, but folks like you need to stop lying about how completely harmless it is. There are side effects to frequent habitual use. They will be realized. Society (that is hard working productive people) should not have to pay for them.
*The very same day I don't have to support a pot head through the guise of public assistance.

First of all, the % of alcohol in beer has gone up significantly since craft brewing first caught on large-scale in the 80's. Stuff's way over 5% now. Three pints of those 6% beers is like more than a sixer of Bud (at least the Bud back in the day). Second, most recreational smokers don't smoke multiple joints (unless they're sharing) -- it's usually several hits. Smoking 3 joints would be like doing double shots of Wild Turkey -- 3 of those a night (101 proof) and you have a problem.

Ok fine, we'll use your standard of equivalency. 5 regular beers a night vs 2 joints a night. 5 beers a night? Totally sustainable long term with fewer side effects than smoking 2 joints a night.

Finally, someone not making comparisons up. I don't know anyone who smokes multiple joints a night -- or at all. Joints are generally shared. Even those I know who do bong hits do 2-3. Smoking 2-3 entire joints would take too much time anyway. But why let reality get in the way of hyperbole?

I used your standard. That 5 beers = 2 joints. Or rather one double of 101 equals one joint which means 5 beers (totally sustainable) equals 2 joints.
Now if you don't like the comparison and want to get into "most folks I see"
I would agree most folks I know who use pot are not smoking near that much.
I would also say that 90% of them have problems being responsible (Holding down a job, providing for themselves etc)
Whereas 90% of the people I know who use alcohol regularly (exclusive to pot use including even some known alcoholics) don't have issues being responsible in their lives.
If you want to diverge from the discussion that cannabis has known chronic effects following chronic use even at low doses where alcohol does not, and get into personal anecdote I'm fine with that too.
My whole point not was that pot should be illegal. Simply that proponents of its use should be more honest about it. It is far from a 0 side effects drug, and does not compare favorably to alcohol use. Those that portend otherwise are fighting an uphill battle toward legalization.
