College Hoops Smack Talk Thread
— andy

Some people apparently like this sport. Me? I'll take a sharp stick in the eye, thank you very much.

Today's NCAA schedule (times Eastern):

Ladies First

* Tennessee 84 def. Kansas 73
* North Avenue Trade School (a/k/a Georgia Tech) vs. Baylor @ 2:32pm/now
* St. John's vs. Duke @ 9:04pm
* South Carolina vs. Stanford @ 11:32pm

Did they draw these times out of a hat or something?

Games People Actually Care About

* Florida *spit* vs. Louisville @ 4:30pm
* Ohio State vs. Syracuse @ 7:05pm

Everytime I see this disgusting behavior by these lazy leftists I always think about that CNN segment with Susan Roesgen saying how that Tea Party protest was not "fit for family viewing." What wasn't "fit," according to Roesgen, was a calm man with his tiny little cute daughter sitting on his shoulders while he explained why he thought government's reckless deficit-spending was bad.

31 I see Fox is touting a new "congressional report" that says tax breaks amount to a trillion dollars a year.

How long before they start calling these "loopholes".

When they "reform" the tax code it will be a tax increase.  When Reagan supposedly decreased the taxes by eliminating a lot of deductions and reducing the rates it took less than a year before they raised the rates back up again.

One is on Saturday the other on Sunday, Monday and Thursday. College football is nothing more than watching which College has the best recruiting staff. Its just that simple. Recruit 3 super talents you have a killer college team. Do that in the pros and you get the first pick in NFL draft.

Well....Emperor Barky's first trip evah to Oklahoma didn't win him any fans here.

First off....Wednesday night he comes to OKC to settle in for the night at a downtown hotel. ....Trouble is, there was an OKC Thunder game going on at the arena downtown. ....When people came out to get in their cars to go home....they couldn't leave because all the streets were blocked off.

This was kinda funny....since so many of the leading Thunder players have gone on record to praise Barky in the past.

Then, the next day....people trying to get on the crosstown I-40 to get to work, couldn't because all the on-ramps and exits were blocked off for Barky's motorcade.

He get's up to Cushing for his photo-op.....and had to wait until the busloads of hand-selected people for his 'audience' to show up.

Don't ask me for any links about this. You have to live here to have heard about this.

94 Speaking of college athletics: http://tinyurl.com/85ktajf More than a decade before former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky was charged with more than 50 counts of child sex abuse, a psychologist warned university police that his actions fit that of a “likely pedophile’s pattern.” The finding by State College, Pa., psychologist Dr. Alycia A. Chambers, the therapist for one of Sandusky’s alleged victims, was contained in the internal Penn State files of a 1998 police investigation of the former coach for showering and bear hugging her client and another young boy in the school’s athletic locker room. *** I understand why authorities couldn't do anything formally (probably), but Penn State certainly had the ability to cut off his access to young kids at their facilities and events. That would have been easy to do by just rewriting a few general policies about volunteer programs involving minors.

Obviously not one of those little turds has fished before.  Fishing requires guile and a fair bit of intelligence.  You can't just fling out the bait and expect to catch something.

153 >>what the fuck is a biophysicist? Physical properties of biological systems, usually on molecular or atomic scale. So the folks who study muscle, for example, are often biophysicists. They determine how much force is generated per molecular event, for example. Also, people who determine molecular structures via things like X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and electron microscopy are biophysicists. If you look at Chu's research areas, he does things like probe ("atomic force") microscopies where they will measure physical properties on individual molecules.

The movie has Woody Harrellson (sp?) stealing the show, although not as much as he stole Zombieland. Maybe because the main characters were better-acted and more likeable than Zombieland's. Anyway if you like the book, the movie is for you.

I'd always thought that Katniss is a MarySue, so the skeptical moronettes have a point there. I could add some other critiques, like the obvious plot devices: genetically-engineered mockingjay birds and especially the tracker-jacker wasps that appear when the author has written Katniss up a tree.

Here's what's good about the *story*: The pacing of events is always good. The bad guys in the Capitol are overdressed hipsters - not your usual dystopian commies (1984) or conservatives (Handmaid's Tale). The protagonist, however MarySue-ish, fights for herself and for those who loves (not something we see from the Sandra Fluke Generation). The overall message is libertarian.

AFAIK, the Lakota groups in ND are fighting UND changing their names from the Fighting Sioux.  It's the admin that wants the name change --not the Indians!  In fact, as I understand a part of the school's charter done in the '60s mandated adoption of the name and adopted it with pride.

The Boston College Eagles got their nickname in 1922.  Prior to that they were known informally as the Wildcats.  But a Jesuit professor considered wildcats undignified, and pushed to officially rechristen them the Eagles.

One of the reasons I gave up on college basketball and football was the insidious imbecility of the NCAA. Here is an organization that purports to protect the academic athlete but spends its time punishing teams for their indian mascots. Has anyone ever noticed that the NCAA is headquartered in Indianappolis, Indiana? After Dexter Manley admitted he was illiterate after spending 5 years at Oklahoma what did the NCAA do about university's using non-academic players to fill their sports department's budgets? Nothing. They decided the money should be equally shared among women athletics. Anybody find this behavior annoying?

When Oklahoma City was trying to come up with a name for their new team a few years ago....they decided to play it safe and go with "Thunder".  Heh. ....You can't get sued by the weather.

But when it came time to come up with a mascot....that was a head-scratcher. ....So they settled on a Buffalo. ....So we have a dancing Buffalo, leading the cheers and keeping the crowd entertained.

If it weren't for Hurricane Katrina....we probably still wouldn't have a team here. ....OKC hosted the N'Orleans team for a while, after Katrina. ....And the overall community spirit and support for having them here....is what led to us having our team now, after they went back home.

304 >>Yeah, Tiger let's his emotions get the better of him. I forgot to mention that yesterday he missed a drive (not all that badly) and he did his schtick of wacking at the fairway with his club, making a huge divot. Isn't that a penalty? >>I'm not making excuses for what he's done >>in his personal life but he's a hot mess. Yep, it really seems like he had a screwed up childhood or something. He's always looked like he has a chip on his shoulder. Most people have some good in them, so I assume that's true of Tiger as well. Billy Casper is a friend of his and he (Billy) strikes me as a good person who wouldn't associate with a completely lost cause. It's been fun watching some of the young guys come up. Rory McIlroy has been doing really well.

305 I heard nothing but good things about Tiger's father.   Too bad he didn't teach me not to cheat on his wife.

307 "me"  ?  I have never cheated on my wife.   I meant "him"

308 306 I heard nothing but good things about Tiger's father. Too bad he didn't teach me not to cheat on his wife. ---- I guess you mean in terms of how he interacted with Tiger, not with Tiger's mom. But maybe he pushed Tiger too hard as a kid.

I know. I'm just speaking to his athletic ability.

I don't know what's in his head. I'll leave that to the fucktard libs at ESPN, etc. to try and psychoanalyze him.

310 I know, Vic. There's not *much* that makes me think, "gee, this topic is bad news" but the Tr@yv0n fights passed longbow range some time ago.

311 I know. I'm just speaking to his athletic ability.

He seemed to have plenty in the early years. Maybe the problem was when he'd earned enough money to afford hot and cold running bimbos.
