Confirmed: Arlen Specter Is A Cranky, Nasty Entitled Old Bastard
— Ace

Snarlen Arlen -- voted several times as among the nastiest people in Congress, by the staffers and those who work with Congress.

He's mad he had to sit through commercial breaks to do the radio interview.

Has he ever heard radio?

8 1 - NPR doesn't have commercials.

Technically - it depends on how you define "commercials."  They have spots where they call out national and local sponsors and thank them, and they also have spots for what's coming up next.

16 Quick OT thought

If not-Obamas were more cynical they would happy Obama and the media have overreached on this "White-Hispanic" issue.  Imagine if he had handled it well?  Americans growing weary of him might have rekindled the "hope" they once had that he was the "lightworker" that he himself and the media portrayed him as.

I can't -stand- talk radio for that reason. 105 Soap MacTavish: I'll take your word that Specter has a point about those commercials (I haven't listened to talk radio since the 90s). If it is a problem then I agree with you. If Specter were a (serving) Senator, complaints about private industry - like talk radio - would be a threat. Now that he's a private citizen, he has the right to complain about it. At the extreme, he can say "I would love to come on your show, but I have a problem with the volume of commercials; address this, and then we can talk".

And the radio station would then have the right to tell him to pound sand. That's how bargaining is done out here in the private sector.

I suspect, though, that Specter would be a net turnoff to the audience. That means the radio HAS TO run that volume of commercials to pick up the slack. In which case, Specter should accept his place and remember that he is not a Government agent anymore.

Posted by: Boulder Toilet Hobo at April 02, 2012 04:55 PM (QTHTd)

115 lowandslo: if Specter's book had argued more for his legal opinions, instead of gossiping about Ted Kennedy's weight - then maybe the book would have segued better into current events.

Kennedy is dead and so that part of Specter's book is USELESS.

Specter seems not to be down with that whole "future time orientation" thing. But if he had more of a clue he'd still be a Senator.

Mentioned this on Friday night for the croup.  Soak a wool sock in vinegar, ring it out and warm the sock (warm, not hot).  Place around your son's neck and secure with a safety pin.  We used it a lot when the children we young and had great results every time.  Someone here mentioned the straight vinegar might be irritating to skin so you might want to cut it 50/50 with water.  We never diluted and the kiddos never experienced irritation.

From the German perspective- not just the Nazis- they were a bunch of traitorous slimeballs who got exactly what they deserved. The problem is we have no real way of knowing just what type of government they were to set up, what excesses they were going to halt, and just how they were going to get the then-government to operate in their framework. I do know they wanted to continue the war in the East and come to a seperate peace with the Western Allies.

Up to 1937, if Hitler was killed and replaced by a true fascist (like Mussolini) or - better - a reactionary general (Franco): there was an opportunity there for a German leader to make the case for a united front against Stalin. In such an event, World War I would have been remembered for the suicidal folly it was and the German people would have rehabilitated themselves. And maybe we'd have been rid of Communism to boot.

After 1938, it may have been too late.

It helped.  I ended up having bad bronchitis....twice.

209 I liked The Hunger Games, Jewells. Needed a bit of editing, though. Not for length; more for introducing important plot elements earlier on.

210 >>>175 OT watching Valkyrie. If some Germans had successfully assassinated Hitler would world opinion of the German people been improved a lot?A little? I just watched that last week. Great cast but it did not convey, in my opinion, the tension they must have all been feeling for so long. People had to be climbing the walls. Nebe is an interesting character. He was played by Branaugh. He was also a character in the films/play Wansee Conference. He was the guy upset about killing the half jews and was also head of one of the Eizengruppen killing squads. Yet, he was part of the resistance from the very beginning.

211 phoenixgirl.. don't want to spoil for anyone.. but the scene after Rue, do you remember?  I was bawling.. it seemed like something that could so easily happen here.

213 Since people are advising me to get the kid's version of medicine, I guess I've left the impression that my son is young.  Uh...he's almost 26.

214 Hah, I thought Harrelson was awesome as Haymitch

215

I took my son and he kept looking over at me and asking if I was okay.. he didn't know why I was crying, thought it was because of the previous scene (which it was) but then that next scene just got to me even more.

216 213 Must have been tough for a patriotic German to know the right thing, especially if they weren't completely aware of the extent of the Nazi crimes. We tend to act like it was simple, imagine if you were a French soldier when Petain surrendered France. One newly minted General calling for resistance or follow your government?DeGaulle.like him or not,did a remarkable thing by keeping the idea of French resistance alive until it became reality.Ironiaclly,French commies sabotaged the war effort because Hitler was still Stalin's ally.

218 Same here Boulder.. I know he's a douche in real life.. but I thought he was good in it.  Not what I pictured when I read the book, but he did a great job.

Posted by: jewells45 at April 02, 2012 05:48 PM (Z71Vg)

219 #216 I haven't seen it yet. I'm not sure if I really want to see it. I mean it is about kids killing other kids right?

220 Must have been tough for a patriotic German to know the right thing, especially if they weren't completely aware of the extent of the Nazi crimes.

Similar in Korea under the Japanese.

According to B R Myers, "The Cleanest Race": The most patriotic organisations in Korea under the Japanese were PRO-Japanese. The Japanese held themselves out as the protectors of Korea - Japan against the inferior races, starting with the Chinese.

Sure, some Korean women were taken off to amuse Japanese soldiers abroad... okay, maybe a LOT, and maybe some would have rather stayed home... but most Koreans kept mum about it all. There was no full-on "Rape of Inchon", for instance, like there was a Rape of Nanjing; the Japanese wouldn't have considered it. The Japanese thought of Koreans as little siblings. And patriotic Koreans went along with that.

221 >>>One newly minted General calling for resistance or follow your government? If we were invaded and obammy sued for peace, what would you do? I think the bind the french were in was that they had lost so many people in WWI and were sick of war.

222 Rue should have been more elfin like

She was dark-skinned in the book. West Africans don't do "elfin" well. Maybe if the casters'd looked to east Africans or south Indians.

Thresh was fine, IMO.

223 Hummingbird... well yes it is and I did have a hard time watching a few parts of it.. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet so I will stop there.  Still a good movie though.. really gives you pause.

Posted by: jewells45 at April 02, 2012 05:59 PM (Z71Vg)

224 From the book, I pictured Rue a little younger and smaller but the little gal that played her did a great job.

225 My post above was about the Korean homefront because that's what I read about. I have no idea about what the average Japanese thought about their generals' campaign of world-conquest. I assume they were for it given the fanaticism by which they defended Okinawa et al.

Posted by: Boulder Toilet Hobo at April 02, 2012 06:01 PM (QTHTd)

226 The mini series Hiroshima, has Suzuiki mocking the fanaticism at the general's meetings. Because of his age they sort of let it pass. It is a very good series and the actors who played the Japs were grreat.

227 226 Yeah but Petain sold it as there being no occupation(at first for most of the country there wasn't)and the British betrayed them anyway.Different situation but the BEF in WW1 didn't run to the ports to be evacuated, they fought to practicalkly the last man.Definately the massive losses of WW1 were a factor.

He says his nose isn't clogged and when he coughs, nothing comes up.  He just keeps coughing.

I hope he didn't catch something in Asscrapistan.

233 >>>I think the bind the french were in was that they had lost so many people in WWI and were sick of war. Posted by: Hezbollah at April 02, 2012 09:54 PM (s6QDI) Very much had a lot to do with French resignation to fate. You need to remember, virtually all of the western 1/2 of WW1 took place in France and Belgium. Germany and Austria came out with relatively little physical damage, and hadn't lost nearly as many civilians.

234 When Specter ran for his final term, in '05 (?), he had no problem getting the Philly Dems to print up "Rendell/Specter" leaflets (Rendell was running for Gov as a D, Specter was still nominally an R). these were passed out at poliing places until the Rendell people found out and stopped it. Specter, as an old-time Philly hack, knew who to grease. But nothing could save him last time, after he jumped parties everyone hated him.

The morning guys of the local sports talker, WIP, have a strange fascination with Specter. They bring him on once a week to get his views on the local sports scene, for some unknown reason,. The way the hosts of the show slobber over him is just ridiculous.

235 Steevy, #220:

"Ironically, French commies sabotaged the war effort because Hitler was still Stalin's ally."

I didn't know that, but I remember skimming the memoir of an OSS officer who dropped into France to work with the resistance. He alleged, and I find this easy to believe, that late in the war some communist resistance cells would betray non-communist resistance cells to the Nazis.  By then they knew the Nazis were going to lose, and wanted to strengthen their own position within the overall resistance for after the war.
