— DrewM The Wall Street Journal has a fascinating look inside the fiscal cliff negotiations.
I think it's supposed to be a pro-Boehner piece that shows he was willing to go the extra mile at every turn only to run into an immovable object...Barack Obama. That much is true but the image of Boehner either not realizing or not caring that he was trying to "negotiate" with someone who was only interested in accepting nis surrender is depressing.
Mr. Obama repeatedly lost patience with the speaker as negotiations faltered. In an Oval Office meeting last week, he told Mr. Boehner that if the sides didn't reach agreement, he would use his inaugural address and his State of the Union speech to tell the country the Republicans were at fault. At one point, according to notes taken by a participant, Mr. Boehner told the president, "I put $800 billion [in tax revenue] on the table. What do I get for that?"
"You get nothing," the president said. "I get that for free."
After the election, Boehner aides tried to shape the debate by offering early concessions, including that the GOP would agree to raise new tax revenue. A speech Mr. Boehner planned to give was rewritten 18 times and included input from top Republican leaders.
So after being told his initial concession was a gift that Obama had no intent on reciprocating Boehner then prepares....ANOTHER CONCESSION? What world is this guy living in?
On Dec. 13, Mr. Boehner went to the White House at the president's request, joking he was going to the woodshed. The president told him he could choose one of two doors. The first represented a big deal. If Mr. Boehner chose it, the president said, the country and financial markets would cheer. Door No. 2 represented a spike in interest rates and a global recession.
Mr. Boehner said he wanted a deal along the lines of what the two men had negotiated in the summer of 2011 in a fight over raising the debt ceiling. "You missed your opportunity on that," the president told him.
That night, the speaker and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R., Va.) decided to make the biggest concession so far.
Two problems here.
First, once again Boehner is given an ultimatum by Obama and Boehner's (and Cantor's, don't forget that) reaction is to offer "the biggest concession" to date.
Look, I loathe Barack Obama but why would he put anything on the table if all he has to do is wait for Boehner and Cantor to cook up another unilateral concession? Obama is a lying SOB but he's not an idiot.
The bigger problem to me is the idea that Boehner "joked" (because this is soooo funny!) that he was going to "the woodshed".
The Speaker of the House of Representatives is a constitutional officer just like the President. Boehner heads one of the co-equal branches of government. If he is psychologically unprepared to meet the challenge of fulfilling his constitutional obligation to serve as a check and balance on the Executive, he needs to go.
This isn't the first time Boehner has shown he's simply not up to the task of dealing with the President.
Obviously Boehner or anyone in his spot is playing a very, very weak hand. Boehner however is playing it like he has no hand and is just giving Obama his chips a couple at a time.
What could Boehner do? Change the rules, play a different game. Not so much to win everything but to minimize his (our) loses.
He could start by ignoring Obama and dragging the Senate Democrats into this.
Pass the GOP's bottom line offer and when the Senate doesn't take it up, pass something else sightly less attractive to the Democrats. Rinse, lather, repeat. Make it clear not agreeing with them only makes things worse, not better.
And yes, the DMM will be on Obama's side. So make them cover things on your terms.
Make a stupid West Wing PR gesture and have Boehner walk over to the Senate and try and negotiate with Harry Reid in public. Brietbart one of his pressers if you have to.
Do something. And do it publicly. If people can't see it, it won't count because of the DMM.
When you're weak you have to try something different because by the accepted rules, you're weak.
Would something like that have worked? Who knows but it couldn't be any worse from a policy or PR position than we are now and this position was entirely foreseeable.
Added: I propose we start using "Boehner" as a verb: "To utterly and publicly screw up".
Andy has a great example.
The Jets really Boehnered that contract with Sanchez.

This is all that matters:
If he is psychologically unprepared to meet the challenge of fulfilling his constitutional obligation to serve as a check and balance on the Executive, he needs to go.

It is the only thing that President Thin Skin cares about.
From this, we can conclude that attempting to negotiating in terms of (a) economic vitality or (b) ideological consistency are destined to be total failures.
You have to work with people's actual motivations, not what they say their motivations are, about which they frequently lie.

I don't think Boehner has any idea of the power he and the House hold. I say it's mostly ignorance of the US Constitution.
Boehner has basically caved to the dems' and media's idea of government construct.

I think the House should pass two balanced budgets. Do one with some tax increases and a shit load of spending cuts and one with enough tax increases to cover the deficit shortfall at present spending (is that even possible?) and then go home. Let the Senate and the President sort it out.

You guys still fail to grasp reality, it's getting pathetic.
These guys negotiated on this awhile back, and couldn't come to an agreement, so they agreed to put it to the voters. It was put to the voters and Obama won big.
So, when the negotations start up, Obama gets to say, we went over this and I won, so you give that to me for free and we go from there. That's how it works. We lost. He won. There is a price we have to pay for not coming to an agreement the last time. Please, please get your heads out of your asses.

Oh it certainly would. But its not going to happen no matter how much we wish it. The outcome of this would wind up being Obama essentially holding a political rally where he has a fully cheering crowd and the mfm refusing the air any rebuttal from the Republicans.
I also think that if we were to have an ousting of Boehner as speaker the outcome would be the wing of the party getting into control would be the ones that were in charge during Bush's term. And they sure were a fiscally restraining lot weren't they?

They are ready to create a new system closer to their hearts desire when it burns down. well so should the right. And then stand back and let it burn. When a house is so full of termites it comes a time to tear or burn it down and rebuild. The left want the fire and the right keep replacing timbers hoping not to lose the whole thing but in no time the new timbers are infested as well.

But there is another part of the story that is even more important: Choom Boy has to be kicked to the curb as well. Not that I think we should cut John the Weeper any slack. On the contrary, he should not only lose his "leadership" post, but also his status as a Representative.
But the real danger here is the worthless traitor in the White House. If we HAD a Republican who would stand up to him, Obama would still ignore anything that wasn't out-and-out acceptance of his America-hating plans and "philosophy."
So Step One is to somehow rid D.C. of a man who has never shown anything but a commitment to destroying America. Then, after jailing and/or firing all his co-conspirators as well, we can look at brooming all the Poppin' Fresh Republicans who have made caving in to the Democrats a way of life.
Not gonna happen? Obviously not. But it is the only way to keep this country from continuing down the path toward Kenya-ization.

also again OT NDAA Indefinite Detention Provision.
WASHINGTON -- Congress stripped a provision Tuesday from a defense bill that aimed to shield Americans from the possibility of being imprisoned indefinitely without trial by the military. The provision was replaced with a passage that appears to give citizens little protection from indefinite detention.
The amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 2013 was added by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), but there was no similar language in the version of the bill that passed the House, and it was dumped from the final bill released Tuesday after a conference committee from both chambers worked out a unified measure.12/18/2012 9:03 pm ES

Any fiscal discussion that doesn't begin with the vigorous defense of capitalism and the nefarious efforts of the Leftard Legion in Congress and the WH to subvert it is wasted breath. Somebody, and I really don't care who it is at this point, needs to start explaining how everyone's standard of living is being reduced by the Left.
Start showing what the actual UE and inflation figures are, what the actual expenditures of this administration are and how they've gone through the roof in the past four years. Then, introduce a truly balanced budget that matches expenditures with tax revenue.
Then go home and let TFG and Hairy Reed battle it out.

The continuing resolutions have been way too fat -- otherwise there wouldn't have been the extra trillions spent. If you were going to have a continuing resolution, it should have been for the absolute bare minimum of expenditures -- national debt, basic defense, prisons and courts.....and not a dime for any "policy" wings (like EPA, DoJ's civil rights group, Ag, Dept. of Education) or entitlements.

Wrong. Well, not exactly wrong, just no longer an operative truth and will continue to be treated as such.
It's a whole other world we live in now. With Obama, all things have become new and the old has passed away, and a majority of your fellow voters heartily approve. They demanded a king. They have one.

Why go through the phony theater of the debt ceiling, when everyone on earth knows the Rs are going to raise it?
What is the fucking point? If it is to convince every last fucking person in the entire universe that the Rs are nothing but actors on a stage, full of sound and fury, and accomplishing nothing, then, sure, big win. For the nation? Not so much.

"We have passed legislation today that brings spending back into line with actual tax revenue. As a result, the following agencies have been defunded: EPA, the departments of Energy, Education, Trade and others (holds up list). We are truly sorry, but this is the direct result of President Obama's unwillingness to offer up any cuts as part of his so-called "balanced approach" to the outrageous spending he, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid saw fit to impose upon the nation, in direct opposition to proven historical economic principles that have served us until they were ignored by this president."
"We cannot in good conscience, allow this administration to destroy the livlihoods and living standards of the country, which is what the Democrats plan will achieve. The people deserve better and they expect their representatives in Washington to uphold common-sense ideas and policies, particularly when it comes to the free market. Every American deserves the freedom and security that a robust economy provides for themselves and their families. We will not let them down."

"We have seen the European Model of economics in operation for many years. What has that done for their citizens? Are there news reports of an economic boom there today? No, what we hear on the news is that many governments are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, their unemployment rates are higher than 20% and inflation is rampant. This is due to the inescapable fact that their government has become far too big, too expensive and too intrusive in their economies to survive. As a result of too much spending, many innocent people are suffering.
We will not allow that here. The lessons are clear: a government that is too large begins to drag any country's economy down. If this administration were honest, it would revise the unemployment rate to reflect the actual numbers of Americans out of work, which currently runs around 11%. Inflation numbers would be accurate and be around 9-10%. None of this needs to happen. We should be responsible stewards of the nations' taxpayer monies by not spending more than we take in.
Today, deficit spending will no longer occur on our watch. We have stopped the irresponsible spending that Democrats have foolishly initiated during the 111th Congress. We will have an economic policy that encourages responsible, economically viable spending in accordance with the Founder's vision and which encourages the creation of wealth. Every American deserves to have as much money in their pockets as possible."

Which begs the question: What does he use to manipulate these people? This goes all the way back to Obamacare negatiations with CBO head all the way to Justice Roberts and now Bonehead. Me thinks he is digging dirt or threatening people.

Obama and the left, which includes the MSM, want to destroy the right and the Republicans MORE than they want a deal.
And because they can play anything the Republicans do as bad/evil and anything Obama does as great and god like we will lose.
The low information voter (you know the morons) rule the nation.
LET IT BURN!!!

In one line, you have perfectly described the present and the future. Which is why I give it five years max until all sites like this one, sadly, disappear.

"At one point, according to notes taken by a participant, Mr. Boehner told the president, 'I put $800 billion [in tax revenue] on the table. What do I get for that?'
'You get nothing,' the president said. 'I get that for free.'"
Had I been in the speaker's position, I would have walked out right then and there, put the phone into "take message" mode, then start formulating a plan to make sure the public would be told of ALL the details of what went on and Obie's bad-faith negotiating.
If Obie wants to try being an asshole, let's show him what dealing with a real asshole would be like.

+1.
Obama and Reid are playing the 'bad cop / even worse / lazy corrupt cop' routine. Tell Obama that he has nothing on the table if its not through the Senate first. Tell them to get it through the Senate, the House will revise it,
and then they will meet in House-Senate conference to hash it all out.
Then put the budget guns on it - Ryan, Price, Coburn, etc. Let them battle the Dem counterparts.
These 'negotiations' are a total fail that gives all the power to the President.
A Congressional mark-up process is not only more proper, more democratic, it will also lead to a better outcome politically for the GOP than being a patsy for Obama's histrionics.

Razor's edge: Pass a bill extending the current tax rates (including the payroll tax) for 4 years, state it is moronic to raise tax rates on ANYBODY in an anemic "recovery" when we have Fed rates cranked to zero, tell the people that the Dems will be responsible for raising the payroll taxes on minimum wage folk, and go HOME.
That's it. Let Obama own it.
