Counterpoint to Hot Air's Dismissal of WAA Polls
— CAC

Ed is right on WAA blowing Wisconsin.

You want to know who also blew Wisconsin, badly?

Public Policy Polling. They came in fifth in terms of accuracy there, took to twitter congratulating the Barrett team for their internals when the exit polls leaked out, and also blew Arizona 8. Yet we know the common reactions over at Hot Air when Jensen&Co push one out. Resident polltroll Greg jumps on them here, himself.

Dismissing WAA's VA polling showing Romney up by nearly 5 would make sense for the Wisconsin reason, if you also dismissed the firms who blew it in the other direction.

Or you do what we do here at #AOSHQDD, take them all into account, and wait for a confirmation of a "shock" poll to see if it is an outliner or a trend.

Just a tip, Ed. One data point does not a trend make. Or a reason to toss.

30 OT: A snippet from Ofourputt's newest missive. I will be the first president in modern history to be outspent in his re-election campaign, if things continue as they have so far. I'm not just talking about the super PACs and anonymous outside groups -- I'm talking about the Romney campaign itself. Those outside groups just add even more to the underlying problem. The Romney campaign raises more than we do, and the math isn't hard to understand: Through the primaries, we raised almost three-quarters of our money from donors giving less than $1,000, while Mitt Romney's campaign raised more than three-quarters of its money from individuals giving $1,000 or more. And, again, that's not including the massive outside spending by super PACs and front groups funneling up to an additional billion dollars into ads trashing me, you, and everything we believe in. We can be outspent and still win -- but we can't be outspent 10 to 1 and still win."

37 I hate to be the true pessimist but --towards the end you look for signs of what the internal polls are telling the campaigns. In 2004--you could tell Nevada was going down to the wire because the campaigns kept stopping over in Las Vegas. Now...Pennsylvania--the ongoing argument. You cannot waste your money their if the internal polling is telling you--that it isn't in reach. Close doesn't cut it. If you lose by 1% you don't get any of PA's electoral votes. And, you have to go after and preserve what you can get. Ohio and Florida are both polling better for Romney. Campaign cash is finite--if you've got enough to blow--then maybe.... But--the other finite thing--is-- the candidate's TIME. That's another "expense" and there is only so much surrogates can do.

46 I agree with much of what CAC says, and yet I think this poll is probably an outlier.  I think it's probably closer to a tie, perhaps a slight (statistically insignificant) Romney lead.  The reason why is the thoroughly implausible Senate race numbers for Allen/Kaine.  There's simply no way that Kaine is only pulling 35% in the race at this or any other point, not as a well known former Governor whose numbers in every other poll are usually far higher (at a 45-48% level that tracks the partisan ID of the state fairly well).

Tangentially, I think we spend way too much time analyzing data from past Presidential elections, and from that we think we can identify a trend to hold onto for the upcoming election.  Presidential elections are infrequent, choices are determined based upon largely subjective analysis, and the population parameters are completely different each time around.

This reinforces the point made in the previous post that a 50-state strategy (even in NY, CA,and IL, with virtually no chance of turning red) demonstrates that a candidate is serious about being a national leader as opposed to a candidate who seeks 270.

O/T -- Rush talking about AZ getting the shaft on illegal apprehension made me think of this, which I got in an email.  Any Dallas morons know if this is true?  If so, it's ingenious.

"The City of Dallas, Texas, passed an ordinance stating that if a driver is pulled over by law enforcement and is not able to provide proof of insurance, the car is towed.

To retrieve the car after being impounded, they must show proof of insurance to have the car released. This has made it easy for the City of Dallas to remove uninsured cars.

Shortly after the "No Insurance" ordinance was passed, the Dallas impound lots began to fill up and were full after nine days.. Over 80% of the impounded cars were driven by ILLEGALS. Not only must they provide proof of insurance to have their car released, they have to pay for the cost of the tow, a $350 fine, and $20 for every day their car is kept in the lot.
Accident rates have gone down 47%, and Dallas ' solution gets uninsured drivers off the road without making them show proof of nationality. "

85 64---"By what logic does someone vote for Gov. McDonnell but then vote for Obama?" They don't, but a lot of people who voted for Obama didn't bother to show up to vote for Deeds. Look at the 5th district, for example. Virgil Goode owned it. Safe seat. But in 2008 the frenzied support for Obama among blacks and students (C'ville) brought so many idiots out from under the rocks that Goode actually lost. Only by a couple of hundred votes, but he still lost. In 2010, absent the idiot Obamabot horde, the seat reverted to the GOP. WHO will vote the most? Those that hate Obama or those that love him? 86 In a letter obtained by The Daily Caller, House oversight committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa pressed President Barack Obama directly on his assertion of executive privilege over documents related to Operation Fast and Furious. “[Y]our privilege assertion means one of two things,” Issa wrote to the president in a letter dated June 25. “Either you or your most senior advisors were involved in managing Operation Fast & Furious and the fallout from it, including the false February 4, 2011 letter provided by the attorney general to the committee, or, you are asserting a presidential power that you know to be unjustified solely for the purpose of further obstructing a congressional investigation.” Issa said Obama’s assertion of executive privilege “raised the question” about the veracity of how the “White House has steadfastly maintained that it has not had any role in advising the department with respect to the congressional investigation.”

87 "They opened up my bag, and I told them, 'Please, be careful. These are my grandpa's ashes,'" Gross told RTV6's Norman Cox. "She picked up the jar. She opened it up.

"I was told later on that she had no right to even open it, that they could have used other devices, like an X-ray machine. So she opened it up. She used her finger and was sifting through it. And then she accidentally spilled it."

Gross says about a quarter to a third of the contents spilled on the floor, leaving him frantically trying to gather up as much as he could while anxious passengers waited behind him."

She didn't apologize. She started laughing. I was on my hands and knees picking up bone fragments. I couldn't pick up all, everything that was lost. I mean, there was a long line behind me.

"TSA rules say a crematory container in carry-on baggage must pass through the X-ray machine at the security checkpoint.

91 Read this--I had to after all of Allah Eeeyore's commiserations. This is where Justice Roberts goes on for the longest during oral argument. ********** CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: Well, now why is that? Congress could — once you — once you establish that you have a market for health care, I would suppose Congress's power under the Commerce Clause meant they had a broad scope in terms of how they regulate that market. And it would be — it would be going back to Lochner if we were put in the position of saying no, you can use your commerce power to regulate insurance, but you can't use your commerce power to regulate this market in other ways. I think that would be a very significant intrusion by the Court into Congress's power. So I don't see how we can accept your -it's good for you in this case to say oh, it's just insurance. But once we say that there is a market and Congress can require people to participate in it, as some would say — or as you would say, that people are already participating in it — it seems to me that we can't say there are limitations on what Congress can do under its commerce power, just like in any other area, all — given significant deference that we accord to Congress in this area, all bets are off, and you could regulate that market in any rational way. GENERAL VERRILLI: But this is insurance as a method of payment for health care services - CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: Exactly. GENERAL VERRILLI: And that — and that is - CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: And you're worried — that's the area that Congress has chosen to regulate. There's this health care market. Everybody's in it. So we can regulate it, and we're going to look at a particular serious problem, which is how people pay for it. But next year, they can decide everybody's in this market, we're going to look at a different problem now, and this is how we're going to regulate it. And we can compel people to do things — purchase insurance, in this case. Something else in the next case, because you've — we've accepted the argument that this is a market in which everybody participates. GENERAL VERRILLI: Mr. Chief Justice, let me answer that, and then if I may, I'd like to move to the tax power argument. JUSTICE SCALIA: Can — can I tell you what the something else is so — while you're answering it? The something else is everybody has to exercise, because there's no doubt that lack of exercise cause — causes illness, and that causes health care costs to go up. So the Federal government says everybody has to — to join a — an exercise club. That's — that's the something else. GENERAL VERRILLI: No. The — the position we're taking here would not justify that rule, Justice Scalia, because health club membership is not a means of payment for — for consumption of anything in — in a market. CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: Right. Right. That's — that's exactly right, but it doesn't seem responsive to my concern that there's no reason — once we say this is within Congress's commerce power, there's no reason other than our own arbitrary judgment to say all they can regulate is the method of payment. They can regulate other things that affect this now-conceded interstate market in health care in which everybody participates. GENERAL VERRILLI: But I think it's common ground between us and the Respondents that this is an interstate market in which everybody participates. And they agree that — that Congress could impose the insurance requirement at the point of sale. And this is just a question of timing, and whether Congress's -whether the necessary and proper authority gives Congress, because of the particular features of this market, the ability to impose the — the insurance, the need for insurance, the maintenance of insurance before you show up to get health care rather than at the moment you get up to show - CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: Right. No, I think - GENERAL VERRILLI: — show up to get health care. And that - CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: — unless I'm missing something, I think you're just repeating the idea that this is the regulation of the method of payment. And I understand that argument. And it may be — it may be a good one. But what I'm concerned about is, once we accept the principle that everybody is in this market, I don't see why Congress's power is limited to regulating the method of payment and doesn't include as it does in any other area. What other area have we said Congress can regulate this market but only with respect to prices, but only with respect to means of travel? No. Once you're — once you're in the interstate commerce and can regulate it, pretty much all bets are off.

97 How Obama lost Canada

What’s more, by engaging in protectionism, Washington has violated the substance and spirit of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the trade bloc formed in 1994 among Canada, the United States, and Mexico. As a result, NAFTA, which was initially intended as a template for broader trade expansion by all three partners, has languished while each country has negotiated a spaghetti bowl of bilateral trade agreements with other countries. Trilateral economic summits among the NAFTA partners have become little more than photo-ops accompanied by bland communiqués. Bilateral meetings between U.S. and Canadian leaders, which were a regular feature of the Bill Clinton and George W. Bush eras, have also mostly fallen by the wayside. Meanwhile, the United States demanded upfront concessions from Canada as the price of entry to negotiations over the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a regional free-trade group, while preserving massive agriculture subsidies of its own. The protracted wrangling over a seat at the table does not augur well for meaningful progress.

Also, union members should be p!ssed at their Union for directing them to the TWC- it's not illegal to file UE (according to Texas code, apparently, even someone still currently employed could apply- they'd just get rejected), but there is a specific exclusion for striking members.  From the email I got back:

And you have it two ways: one is oversight through the Congress to demonstrate what theyÂ’re doing wrong and there are some potential criminal charges there for dereliction of duty. Although, I havenÂ’t looked that up yet. And the other part of it is people need to react through the ballot box to turn out of office those people who are not doing their duty. Now if itÂ’s bad enough and if shenanigans involved in it, then of course impeachment is always a possibility. But I donÂ’t think at this point anybody is talking about that.

154 WAA blew ONE Wisconsin poll, they also got some dead on.

I also believe there can be some manipulation of polls such as WAA which are done online (I think).  For example, if your internal polls are telling you that you are going to lose, might it be a good strategy to then attempt to pump the polling so far into the opponents direction that you have a chance of getting the opposition to just stay home in many cases because they think it's "in the bag"?

So lets say I am going to lose by 5 points and it looks pretty solid that's the case. So I basically tell folks who participate in that polling to say they are voting for Walker even if they aren't.  This accomplishes two things:

1. Makes the election look like such a shoo-in that Republicans don't vote.  If my side is more motivated than their side, such a game means more of their side stays home than my side.

2. Reduces confidence in the polling agency.  (apparently effective looking at the article on HA).

161 It should be said, CAC has really become a good predictor. He's at the point where he's integrating enough information that the underlying dynamics mean something, as opposed to just reading some top-line number as they do everywhere -- but I'm mostly referring to HotAir for now.

Never a big visitor of their [HotAir] site, but the few times I've checked it out it seems like that AllahPundit fellow is going to significantly shorten his lifespan from over-reaction to stressors. He acts like a mouse on amphetamine reacting to any new stimulus.

CAC tells it like it is... minus the "trauma drama" that Allah's brings.

BTW - has anyone gone over to the cesspool that is Kos to see if he is tipping his had on his picks for November.... since he's suck a terrific prognosticator on elections...

164 Don't Mess with Texas.

To be clear, they also explain what it means when they say "until the worker no longer has any part in the dispute."

Basically, if the strike ends (duh), or if the Employer makes an "unconditional offer" to return to work but then does not actually put the employee back to work (assuming they accept the offer).

So they're fairly common sense- if the union returns to work, or the employee tries to cross the picket line but is refused, then they're just regularly "unemployed" and can receive benefits.

165 Rush talking about AZ getting the shaft on illegal apprehension made me think of this, which I got in an email. Any Dallas morons know if this is true? If so, it's ingenious.

Here in MN, they went the opposite direction.

You still have to provide proof of insurance if you're pulled over, but it's just a ticket if you don't.

It used to be the case that you also had to show proof of insurance when renewing your license tabs.  They since did away with that requirement.

Why?  The reason they gave for the change was because the proof of insurance requirement was discriminatory against illegals.

166

CAC is right and is one of the best. HotAir is getting a little jiggly with their pontifications.  For example, Ed's piece yesterday advising the faithful that Justice Scalia went off reservation in his dissenting AZ opinion AND that this could be grounds for a future recusal was a stretch.

This is the problem with new media. We find that we need to constantly perform variations on a theme.

167 The City of Dallas, Texas, passed an ordinance stating that if a driver is pulled over by law enforcement and is not able to provide proof of insurance, the car is towed.

Yep.  I think other cities in the Metroplex are looking at following suit.  Basically, Dallas had a huge problem with uninsured motorists (mostly illegal aliens) causing accidents over and over.

Now, when they get stopped, the car gets impounded.

A lot of people were upset about it ("What if I just forgot my insurance card?") but the consensus was "Well, State Law already says you're supposed to be carrying proof of ability to pay, if you're not carrying it, you're already in violation of the law."

174 Here you have to write down the name of your insurance carrier when you renew your registration.  If you get pulled for a traffic violation they always ask for three things, license, registration, and insurance card.

If you don't have them you are subject to a fine. Yet, they still have a lot of people who drive with no insurance. One of those hit my daughter and totaled her car.  He had no insurance and was not prosecuted.

The last time I was called for jury duty in the county court the only case that had not been settled was one in which State Farm was suing a guy who had wrecked one of their insured drivers and he had no insurance.

Exactly the problem Texas was attempting to solve.

Unfortunately, causing a wreck is only a ticket-able offense in Texas (unless it was on purpose, or someone dies), so "prosecution" was almost never on the table.  So, instead, take their cars.

248 I guess it's a slow news day, although that John Edwards/Rachell Hunter split calls out for mockery.

249 OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) -- President Barack Obama's campaign is recruiting legions of lawyers to handle disputes that may arise from now through Election Day. Thousands of attorneys and support staffers have agreed to aid in the effort, providing legal support that appears to be unrivaled by Republicans or precedent. ****** Just peachy.

251 If Turkey calls in NATO- and the other countries respond with anything other than "You shat in this bed, now lie in it," then we're more-or-less stuck, unless we want to alienate England and Germany yet further. Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) Channelling Breitbart at June 26, 2012 01:58 PM (8y9MW) Short of Bombing them, is there any fucking way Obama could alienate them any further? They already think he's a bad joke.

254 Yeah, what's up with that? Have the Turks sent up the NATO flare or however it is that you convene the North Atlantic Council? Posted by: joncelli, heartless Con and all around unpleasant guy at June 26, 2012 01:51 PM (RD7QR) It looks like they are going to. It is worth mentioning that at least this would be helping to defend a NATO ally since their plane was shot down. Libya and the Balkans were an affront to NATO because they were aggressive wars that the Europeans dragged us into. Heck, we could open a second front with Syria via Iraq.

A bit.  He also stayed for the water aerobics class.  Substitute instructor didn't know he's banned from the pool due to shedding issues - all that fur clogging up the skimmers.

258 McJuan supposedly outing leaker, via drudge, naturally it's "developing."

Either a typo on their part or a bad read on yours (I read it that was also originally).

It now says that McCain and Lieberman are outing the leak source.  The article says that they think it's Thomas Donilon, the national security adviser.

A nice article but this is old news.  There was a sidebar post where Pat Caddell said the same thing in a radio interview.  He later repeated it on Hannity.  Must been a week or two ago.
