The political press and President Obama alike claim they want a campaign about big ideas, an adult debate about policy differences. Now theyÂ’ve got it in spite of, not because of, Barack Obama. With Ryan on the ticket, the debate should no longer be about contraception and the deferred cancer-causing capabilities of Bain investments. It will be about the budget and the $16-trillion debt, the unsustainable trajectory of the federal government and the promises itÂ’s already breaking to generations to come. It will be about Simpson-Bowles and a federal government that hasnÂ’t even bothered to pass a budget since before the iPad existed. It will be about how four years of grossly increased spending has stimulated us into the worst recovery in American history, unless you happen to be an Obama donor or crony. It will be about how creating new entitlement programs cannot possibly fix the ones that are already broken. And, it will be about whether we value an ever more dependent society or an ever more successful one.
And, via Allah, liberal wonk William Saletan is just delighted with the Ryan pick, and not at all in the cynical way you're thinking.
Not high-fiving the pick like the White House is supposedly doing, because it's so easy to demagogue. But because...
Why I Love Paul Ryan
HeÂ’s what a Republican should be: an honest, open-minded, solution-oriented fiscal conservative.By William Saletan
A wonderful thing has happened for this country. Paul Ryan will be the Republican nominee for vice president.
Ryan is a real fiscal conservative. He isnÂ’t just another Tea-Party ideologue spouting dogma about less government and the magic of free enterprise. He has actually crunched the numbers and laid out long-term budget proposals. My liberal friends point out that RyanÂ’s plan leaves many details unclear. ThatÂ’s true. But show me another Republican who has addressed the nationÂ’s fiscal problems as candidly and precisely as Ryan has. HeÂ’s got the least detailed budget proposal out there, except for all the others.
Ryan refutes the Democratic Party’s bogus arguments. He knows that our domestic spending trajectory is unsustainable and that liberals who fail to get it under control are leading their constituents over a cliff, just like in Europe. Eventually, you can’t borrow enough money to make good on your promises, and everyone’s screwed. Ryan understands that the longer we ignore the debt crisis and postpone serious budget cuts—the liberal equivalent of denying global warming—the more painful the reckoning will be. There’s nothing compassionate about that kind of irresponsibility.
Maybe, like me, you were raised in a liberal household. You donÂ’t agree with conservative ideas on social or foreign policy. But this is why God made Republicans: to force a reality check when Democrats overpromise and overspend.
...Screw the polls. Republicans will be on the right side of the spending debate. TheyÂ’ll be on the right side of the substance debate, too. Instead of bickering about RomneyÂ’s tax returns and repeating the obvious but unhelpful observation that the unemployment rate sucks, weÂ’ll actually have to debate serious problems and solutions. ThatÂ’s great for the country.
...IÂ’m voting for Obama. But four years from now? In a stronger economy, with a runaway debt? And Ryan at the top of the ticket? ThatÂ’s awfully tempting.

I really never cross-post, I apologize in advance, but I just put this up at HA:
For the first time since 1984 we are going to hear an articulate and passionate case for small-government conservatism from the GOP Presidential ticket.
Since 1984
Think about that.

I don't know if Paul Ryan helps or hurts chances of getting elected, but I'm sure as hell glad we're going to be exposing that "party of ideas" canard as the fraud it is. Bravo to Romney for that.
We're going the have the best possible person making the best possible case for the most important issue IMO, but obviously I'm a big fan of Paul Ryan. If Americans need to fall a little further into despair to accept reality, then that's really a shame, but I now feel confident that we are at least being given a chance here.

He just can't quite expunge his inner asshole all the way.
Most Tea Party "ideologues" are just another everyday citizen without the megaphone, resources, time, or space to fully articulate their views. So all you get is bullet points.

Bingo. Saletan ran the same shtick in 2004 when he claimed to agree with Schwarzenegger's convention speech. Gosh darn it, he's a fiscal conservative and would love to vote for the Republicans, but [some lame excuse to why he votes for the Marxist instead] so he has to vote for the Marxist instead.
Which isn't to say he's entirely wrong about the GOP being, in the main, feckless; nor about the Tea Party having some underinformed ideologues in it. But if that's his complaint, he should hardly be looking to the Democrats as being responsible nor to freakin' ACORN being a bastion of freethinking philosophers. If that's his complaint then he should ignore both parties and choose the best of the four candidates, which, as he's proven, is Ryan.
So: posturing douchebag postures some more.

Ok, time to break it down by the numbers. Summing up Saleton's observations in order:
- It is wonderful for the country that Paul Ryan was selected
- He's the only one with a plan to fix our mess
- Democrat arguments are bogus
- Liberals are irresponsible
- Democrats need a reality check
- Republicans will be right about spending and substance
- Democrats apparently haven't been serious
So as everyone is rightly pointing out - the liberal mind's tolerance for cognitive dissonance is stupefying.

I think I know what the guy is saying. It's a little like what we say about raising taxes in a bad economy. Liberals think that if you cut spending in a bad economy, that you cripple opportunity for economic growth. Now, they overstate what government can do and understate what private business can do when keeping more of their money, but that's where he is coming from I believe.
The big thing they miss is that the money that government wouldn't be spending does eventually get spent. They don't generate any of this wealth. And business would spend it if they felt the political climate was trending in a more favorable direction. So really what happens is that dollars don't necessarily get spent exactly where government wants them. The economy doesn't feel the pinch, but the favored industries sure do. And, again, liberals tend to buy into the myth that the favored industries provide the greater value over time.
Liberals also often totally disregard the idea that the dollars the government loses still get circulated into the economy. They prefer to pretend that the dollars just come out of the economy altogether. They really know better though. If you talk to any, they will bitch about this endlessly. They get pretty furious that business won't do Obama a solid and spend cash they sit on right now. They view it as greed and selfishness, but why would you step out on a limb when you wonder what this guy might do with another 4 years, especially when not being concerned about re-election?
So I interpret Saletan as being halfway there. He's saying that somewhere along the line, we'll have to take this seriously, but can't we wait until the economy is on more solid footing?
I don't buy any of this, mind you, but that's what I think he's saying based off many frustrating interactions with liberal friends. Sorry if it was long and rambling, but I've been drinking a few here.

Sorry, not anymore. Those vile shitstains have poisoned the well for me. They call me racist, publish bullshit studies telling me I'm intolerant, brain damaged, emotionally stunted, or whatever other vehicle they can use to project their own myriad inadequacies onto the people they hate.
They scream, lie, obfuscate, change the subject, and demonstrate all the symptoms of a schizophrenic child with sociopathic tendencies.
Fuck 'em. Fuck 'em all.

We make a mistake in thinking that Saletan is writing for us.
He is writing for the Left wing drones who will mindlessly pull the lever for Obama because Ryan is a political hack (so said Matthews this afternoon) or Mitt Romney hates women (in the comments under Saletan's article).
As big a conflicting bag of confusion Slate articles usually are, Saletan actually wants THEM to consider the problems at hand. That is not going to happen (judging by the comments) but that is about as close as Saletan and his empty-headed followers will ever get to going beyond ROMNEY ATE MY BABY!
And TAX CUTS FOR MILLIONAIRES! (just watching that on the TV), while Brokeback Obama lies about "reducing the deficit". This is the load of bilge water that sloshes around in the bottom of the ship. And it smells.

So I'm going to lean left when jumping off to avoid them, even though I know they want to save me and I don't want to die.
WTF does Saletan think happens to our currency if the Euro self-immolates? Is he aware of how much of our economy is driven by selling goods and services to Europeans? We may run our own printing presses and use different pictures on the bills and coins but no functional currency on this planet is truly independent of all others.

No, but if such persons are a solid majority we're completely doomed. It's just a few percentage points that need to shift. That, combined with the disgusted voters who cannot bring themselves to repeat their 2008 vote nor vote GOP, will get the job done.
Until such time as someone invents and FTL drive or inter-dimensional gateway that allows an egress to somewhere to start things over, a small, sensible government must include 'adult supervision' as part of its task list.

Saletan wrote the reflexive "I will vote for Obama" as a coda to his little tune, so that his loyal Slate readers won't think he went off the reservation.
Indeed, he hopes that the Democrats will co-opt the Republican ideas and seem sensible and win the election. Because deep down he knows that Obama is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure, and that a lot of the country is really pissed at Obama. Of course, IT'S NOT MY FAULT! says Obama, he inherited the WORST ECONOMY EVER! Because deep down it's really not about solving a problem, it is continuing to wield power for the Left, so that they can continue to talk about how they are going to make everything great. Next year, or in 2015, or whenever.
Of course, the Obama drones are deep in their own cocoon, and while they might have read something bad about Obama and heard criticism of him on "Faux News", they know in their little hearts that he is doing a great job.

It should be fine after that. Though another, slightly less historic, D candidate would give me pause. No it is technically true, we can't literally go bankrupt because there is no power on the planet who can demand that we pay up. We can just inflate away the currency or tell creditors to pound sand or both, neither of which indebted individuals of course can do. Of course it's not a good idea.

Romney was a genius picking Ryan. He knows that Obama can't win the budget, debt, entitlement argument by demagoguing it. Not this time. Every xer, millenial and hooby gooby out there knows they are paying into a system they will never see a dime out of. Boomers like me know we have paid in more than we will get back. It has to be fixed and nobody is better at explaining that than Paul Ryan.

Inflation always seems like it will be a controllable force for good. just a gentle increase in the cost of things matched by a similar increase in wages. Problem is that both are exponential in nature and that kind of growth cannot be sustained.

And that's why what Saletan is looking for isn't realistic. The political climate won't be tolerant of this type of reform in a better economic climate. That's when we get that "bi-partisan compromise" that the pundits mistakenly applaud as progress, because there is money to spend and people agree where to spend it. No, we have to win this now, and we need to people to donate to this campaign to fend off Mediscare attacks that we will soon be barraged with. Romney just stepped it up, he just turned this up to 11, and we need to respond accordingly. I was very skeptical of him, but I don't see where he takes this step unless he is serious, and we need to have his back.
It's huge that we win this now, or we won't win until we have a complete and utter Greek style disaster, and by then it will take generations to recover.

i]So if you know sticking your finger in an electrical outlet is going to electrocute you, why the f*ck are you going to douse your hand with water and then do it anyway?
Finger in electrical outlet? Saletan is dick in light socket stupid. After delineating all the reasons that Jugears needs to be turned out of office, he concludes by saying he'll vote for him. WTF?

You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.

Consider this from RobertÂ’s brilliant ObamaCare decision: Any demand for money from the government is a tax. Government demands for money are taxes. This is a powerful tool if given to a skilled fighter. We will win on taxes or lose on taxes. Our ideas are correct and Ryan is a skilled fighter.

Why is this a powerful tool? The power is in the binary response to a demand for money. Yes or No. Freedom means the human right to say “NO” to a government demand.

Which raises the question: How free do we want to be.

Why the hell does Saletan want another FOUR YEARS of "Old and Busted" Obama - Biden, and THEN vote to clean up the mess, when he could vote for a conservative, will take an actual serious stab at solving the problem (instead of the usual Democrat blow smoke up voters asses with utter bullshit promises) approach and vote for actual change NOW!!
I'll have "Non sequitur" for $400, Alex . . . . . . . <buzzz>

The insights of the ever on target: wbboei (go find the source computer search masters.)
Up to now, the Obama campaign has managed to divert attention from the economy, and Romney has mounted a less than aggressive response, and his staff have shown a remarkable ability to fumble the ball. Ryan will drag that fucking Obama and Crazy Joe Gallo Biden and their big media whores onto a playing field where he alone is the master. The strategy the media will deploy against him is the same strategy an attorney uses when cross examining an expert witness. They will engage in a collateral attack rather than confront him directly on his opinions. And they will cast doubt on any solution he offers as inimical to widows and orphans. This is why he must destroy mainstream media. Hillary did a good job of it, but there were too many of them, conspiring against her. The American People MUST understand that big media is not on their side.

And four years from now, after the second Obama term has wrecked the economy, Europe is collapsing, Iran has the bomb and is threatening to nuke Tel Aviv, and your colleagues in the Fourth Estate have given Ryan the full Palin treatment: what will you do then?
Fucking fool.

Just because you couldn't pass an econ 101 test if your life depended on it doesn't mean our view of economics is based on superstition.
