— CAC The weekly YouGov/Economist poll, which had already shown Romney shrinking the gap in it's previous weekly release, now gives Mitt a tiny lead amongst registered voters surveyed. Partisan breakdown is 42% Democrat, 33% Republican, 24% Independent, and age groups, race and gender all break down matching registered voter population.
Further, amongst hispanics (which every other pollster has screamed HUGE GAP OMGZ! DEMOGRAPHIC DOOOOOM): Obama 52%, Romney 42%.
Amongst women: Obama 49% Romney 45%. So much for the War on Women.
Then (for me) the moneyshot: when asked who they thought would win, Obama is down to just 52% of respondents, Romney comes in at 44%. This is significant, as many voters oftentimes break with whomever seems popular and destined to win. The perception that you have a candidate that can win boosts turnout and enthusiasm amongst your base, particularly after a daunting primary in which the eventual winner did little or nothing to pitch themselves to them.
Update- A few morons mentioned to me there is a lot of eeyoring today, particularly at a few sites I will not name, because of a few maps floating out there I'm not going to link. Well guess what? They're wrong or Im wearing a shirt made out of bacon. AoSHQ map as of 4/26/2012 below:

I would say based on elections they should consider it 60-50. But you must realize how they use that breakdown. They assign weighting multipliers to the actual poll answers based on that breakdown.

All three of those WILL change long before November, and when the avalanche starts, it won't stop.

That was the 9 percent more registered democrates than republicans voted in '08. But that was coming off the Bush years and with a crap Repub McCanidate. The Dems can not expect a repeat of that spread. But the polling firms can "justify" using it.

That question shows how much wish-casting goes on as well:
Whites for Romney 53 %
Hispanics for Romney 42%
Blacks for Obama 91 %
Whites who think *Romney* will win 51 %
Hispanics who think *Romney* will win 38 %
Blacks who think *Obama* will win 95 %
So across the races Obama enjoys a slightly better prediction of victory than his actual support. No surprise. In general, however, people think this early on that the person they're supporting will eventually win.

Um, yep.
Mitt's demonstrated that this won't be a replay of '08 and the McLame debacle. He and his team have been beating back against the SCOAMF/mfm machine fairly hard here recently. And if this poll is any indication, his rise will be slow and steady.
Also, these pollsters will begin to slowly start sampling LV without the Dim skew (as badly), so as to break it to the SCOAMF supporters that their little boy is GOING DOWN!!
IMO, that is

AFTER an election, a significant number of people who did not vote or voted for the loser will claim that they voted for the winner. We know this because the percentages of people claiming to vote for the winner is higher than the percentage he actually got.

I think it's like when you have a stomach ache. At first you dismiss it, then when it doesn't go away, and you realize it's not just gas, or it's getting worse, you start to worry. You know you want to make it stop hurting, but it takes a while before it dawns on you, "hey, it was that Indonesian dog I ate the other day, that's why my stomach hurts!"
And once you're convinced you know what caused it, you do everything you can to avoid eating Indonesian dog the rest of your natural life.

Always remember and never forget: Karl Rove is a piece of shit.
American Crossroads will run simultaneously against Obama and Romney.
It produces ads against Obama while Rove puts out doom projections undercutting Romney.
Why? To hopefully (for Rove) improve the GOP position down ballot while backhandedly helping the Dims defeat Romney, thereby clearing the way for Jebby Boy to arrive in '16 and reunify a bad splintered, gridlocked DC.
As a Palinista, I'm no Romney fan, but what's done is done. Its time to get rid of Obama, period.

A 9 point advantage for Democrats in the sample? Preposterous.
We need a Polling Czar who determines the party affiliation breakdown on a monthly basis based upon thousands of interviews. Then all pollsters MUST BE REQUIRED BY LAW TO WEIGHT THEIR SAMPLES BY THAT BREAKDOWN. The America People deserve to see apples to apples polling. As it is now, we have Rasmussen showing Romney +5 while CBS shows him -9. It is ridiculous.
If there were ever a time for government regulation it is here. This abuse is DANGEROUS.

Exactly. When the best one can say about someone else is, "He's cool," I pretty much conclude, "He's a stoner layabout bullshitting me because he has no real skills."
"Cool" is someone who can actually do things in a responsible manner. It isn't someone who's a poseur. I guess that's why "cool" appeals so to the Hollyweird/Media crowd. They're living in a fantasy world of make-believe.
Fallon's bit was a perfect example of this. (Well, as far as about 20 seconds of viewing that I could tolerate.) Seriously, that was an embarrassment and exactly what I'd expect from "cool" kids. They've just never escaped high-school mentality.

Good news blip on the radar screen this far out but no biggie.
Baby Doll (Eli Wallach's first film) is on TCM. A bizarre flick that I didn't like at first, it's really quite good. Karl Malden plays the part of of the unhinged malevolent character very well. Directed by Elia Kazan, more evidence of Kazan's genius.
Wallach was also excellent in The Misfits, Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe's last film. Both films were dark and unsettling, products of a time when Hollywood was at its creative best.
And, of course, Wallach was the only person to play Tuco in The good, The Bad and The Ugly. That movie rates in my top 10 and I cannot understand those who pan it. But then Dr. Strangelove and A Clockwork Orange also rate on my top 10 list, both of which a lot of people don't "get".
I think (propose) Ace should diversify his movie reviews to include old classics. I understand he's a young ewok and totally unfamiliar with many of the classics, but I think it could be fun for Ace and his audience to delve into past classics.
I'd find it far more interesting and entertaining than a trailer/review of Iron Man VI.

Shamelessly blogwhoring my latest blog post, "And They Wonder Why We Don't Trust Them...."
You want to know why the Mainstream Media is losing market share?
It’s because their “product” isn’t reliable.
An uncomfortable truism of the free market is that there are ALWAYS other choices. And consumers tend to go with the “brands” that they know they can trust. That’s just as true for laundry detergent as it is for news sources.
Once a company has lost the trust and respect of their customers, they almost never recover, and eventually most of them have to close their doors.

It must have been scandalous when it was released. There is some very rough stuff going on for the early 60's, and Mitchum is so convincing it's difficult to separate the hate for the character from the actor.
The remake was also very good. All the actors were fantastic but Juliette Lewis, as the daughter, was incredible.

Great film. One of the few films that was better than the book
Except Kubrick fundamentally altered the point of the story by omitting the last chapter. In the book, Alex meets up with one of the old friends and decides to voluntarily reform. The story becomes about morality being dependent upon having free will to choose good over evil, and how when he was a 'clockwork monkey' he was forced to be good - without any moral improvement.
But by removing the final chapter, Kubrick leaves you with just a bunch of violence without any moral redemption (hence the 'gratuitous violence' criticism, as Kubrick got rid of the moral purpose of showing the violence in the first place).

The wider text stretches out the sentences. A big scrunched up wall-o-text is a turn off to a lot of people. .....In a hand-held newspaper or magazine, it was/is different...there wasn't a light behind the text that messes with your eyes.

Actually, I think A Clockwork Orange is a film that doesn't age well. Lots of references to the pop culture/themes of that time. Vic is old enough to get it whether he likes it or not.
The senseless violence in it makes sense just because it was so senseless. But then I remember the Watts riots, the '68 Chicago convention and many other acts of senseless violence from that era. To me its violence is no more gratuitous (actually less) than the violence in The Fight Club.

Look, Mitt was not/is not my first choice but he is the nominee and getting Obama out of there is job # 1. Once that sets in, and it will very soon with conservative voters, we'll be off to the races. Especially if Mitt runs a good campaign, picks a more conservative Veep as him and takes the fight to Obama.

See, I didn't get that impression from the conclusion. I interpreted the closing scene with Alex being so grateful for his rehab that he'd just realized his fortunes after all the grief he'd experienced. Sure, it was a snapshot moment with some extrapolation on my part as to whatever would become of Alex, but an extra chapter would have been superfluous in Kubrick's presentation.
Like I said, I don't recall the book having gone the extra mile to spell things out.

Kubrick's establishing a tone. You're supposed to be angry, disgusted, and pissed. At Alex and his droogs. It's what you think of his reform and the societal input to reform him and his type that's of importance. Stick with it for a bit so you can watch Alex "get his" for a bit. I guess the thing is, we need to see some justification behind the official AoS map. If correct, Romney is stiitng in the catbird's seat right now.
Before CO and VA went purple, the way the numbers worked was that WI didn't matter, and Obama needed to take all three of the rest - MI, OH, and PA - in order to win. Since each carried a 50/50 chance, Obama's re-election probability was 1/8. With CO and VA both going purple, the odds would still heavily favor Romney.
I'm pretty optimistic. The voters don't remember anything much from more than 6 months previous, and so the ugliness against Romney is going to be a distant memory. The guy seems pretty squeeky-clean, and anybody who wants to paint him as some heartless corporate raider only needs to see the add about him shutting down his office to save the life of a young girl. The main thing would be about issues, but he hasn't (to my knowledge) taken any stands that were especially ideological, and so the independents should warm up to him easily. He's learning to speak in a more Reaganesque way. He has become especially good at taking an attack and turning it around against Obama. Never mind "teflon", he's starting to seem something like f-ing Superman, with the bullets bouncing off, and hitting the bad guys.

Spartacus had a battle scene, filmed on a hillside with real actors, not that CGI crap, that was just beautiful. The precision and the drama and the heart-pounding music impressed me so much the first time I saw it and all these years later still does. It is an example of a fine movie (with the exception of Tony Curtis) that shows the violence relevant to the story but doesn't actually show blood. You KNOW the soldiers and the slaves are dying without having to see their guts spilled all over the ground.

There are many compelling and enthralling scenes.

The scary thing about FMJ is that it's not as bad as it could have been. I am told that the movie stops after Part II of the book, and in Part III, Joker joins the V.C.
I have not bothered to find out for sure, because I didn't like the movie that much to begin with.

That means Is were breaking against Obama almost 3-1
Think about it... Obama can only get 46% in a poll with 42% Democrats?
Corrected for sampling bias it's closer to:
52% Romney vs 39% for Obama
But these are 'registered voters' not 'likely voters' which is more subject to enthusiasm. Ask yourself who is more fired up? D's or R's?
So... worse than 52-39?

You can argue all you want about Kubrick's "brilliance" but I think his record was pretty spotty. 2001: A space Odyssey is a horrible, unintelligible hash of film clips. And I've watched it way more than once. I think why it has such a large cult following is because everybody can hypothesize on every part of the totally disjointed film.
Elia Kazan, on the other hand, was a true genius. The ultimate proof of it was how many film industry leftists refused to applaud his lifetime achievement award during the 1999 Oscar awards presentation.

"[police]I can tell you without a doubt 100 percent that the Trayvon Martin case was not the motivating factor, said Levy. "That 100 percent, it is an ongoing incident between people that have been fighting for a few years now."

Give Kubrick some credit for Dr. Strangelove and Barry Lydon - the former resonates with audiences to this day, and the latter was a lavish evocation of the Eighteenth Century in all its glamor and grittiness, with the added plus of having a protagonist who was a completely unappealing douchebag, for whom Kubrick still managed to evoke some strange sympathy.
If you really want to plumb the depths of weirdness, check out the conspiracy theories out there about 2001 and The Shining - people are seriously trying to argue that 2001 was Kubrick's dry-run test film to prove that he had the right stuff to fake the Apollo 11 moon landing footage, and The Shining is his coded admission of guilt over doing this. It's the sort of thing that leaves even the Icke and Alex Jones types shaking their heads.

Compared to his other stuff? Yeah. It was a weird film. It's like he was hinting at an undiscovered underworld but all the sex and innuendo got in the way. I think Kubrick died near the end of its making which would explain either its a) lack of focus, b) focus on the least interesting parts of an "underworld," or c) its general crapitude despite expensive casting.

It's more than a little ridiculous to see that hack Biden giving credit to Obama for getting Bin Laden. This after Obama - and by extension Biden, as a Democrat - doing everything in their power to undermine everything the Bush Administration was trying to do to get Bin Laden. From non stop attacks on the Patriot Act to doing everything in their power to stop any effective interrogation techniques - both these fucks have the temerity to take credit for, essentially, 'just being there' when all those policies and efforts were finally rewarded.
Fucking Democrats have no shame.

Eyes Wide Shut made some interesting comments about trust, about male and female sexuality, about the sort of wack shit the ultra-powerful class get up to,* about the choices people make every hour.
*This is fascinating to me. People just don't seem to get how sinister and evil people can be. For instance Walter Duranty of Ukraine-famine fame was an actual Satanist (Crowley sect). In general, assuming you're not very talented, the more evil you are, the more fun you'll have. That's why Obama gravitated toward communist and racist organisations all his life.
