  • For some reason all my protons hurt today.

  • Linux support is coming to Arm-based Macs with the 5.13 kernel. (Tom's Hardware)

This is an early release with the idea that it will boot and run, but don't expect (for example) working Thunderbolt support. In fact, don't expect much of anything; this is more a base platform for other kernel developers than anything end users would want.

The reason it matters is that the new M1 Macs are technically good - if limited - but are so far completely closed systems. You can run one specific version of MacOS and nothing else.

I have an iMac, but it's Intel-based and I could easily install Windows or Linux on it if I chose to do so.

  • AMD are coming out with the Ryzen 5900 - non-X edition - a 12 core 65W model you won't be able to buy. (Tom's Hardware)

You can't buy the 5900X anyway, because it offers the best price/performance of the Ryzen 5000 family and sells out instantly, but you double won't be able to buy the 5900 because it's an OEM-only part.

What it does tell us, though, is that cutting the power from 105W to 65W reduces single-threaded performance by 5% and multi-threaded performance by just 10%. That would leave it nicely placed to utterly crush Intel's 11900K, which you also can't get.

  • Sorry, I have a cold. (The Register)

A British airline significantly under-estimated load weight on three flights because they calculated the weights of female passengers using the title "Miss" as children.

Which in turn was because the load calculation software was outsourced to another country with its own idiosyncratic usage of the titles Miss and Ms.

Fortunately the miscalculation was still within the required safety range and there were no incidents, and the error was found and fixed within 72 hours.

Makes me glad I work in an industry where if I make a really bad mistake people just get pissed that their fancy web integrations are down rather than getting scattered all over the landscape in pieces.

  • To absolutely no-one's surprise, an app for installing old versions of apps contained malware. (Tech Crunch)

APKPure would in fact install your desired apps, but it would also flood your phone with ads.

  • Hong Kong police have seized a contraband shipment of shark fins, sea cucumbers, and Nvidia CMX dedicated crypto mining cards. (ExtremeTech)

Gotta love a site that refers to the ongoing GPU shortage as a "peanut-butter-and-clusterfuck sandwich".

  • Major banks are threatened by DeFi - decentralised finance. (CNBC)

(I wrote distributed finance at first.  I always do that for some reason, then stop and wonder how you get DeFi out of that, then go back and edit it.)

Had to laugh at this line:
There are, of course, many risks associated with DeFi, including its lack of regulation and protections.
Because that's worked out so well in the mainstream financial industry.

Anyway, DeFi as it stands is centered on Ethereum, and Ethereum is a total clusterfuck at the moment with no hope of it working properly any time soon, with Ethereum 2.0 progressing at a pace that would embarrass a bank and the miners set to oppose it when it is finally ready for deployment.

Ethereum 2.0 will significantly increase transaction throughput on the network and equally reduce transaction costs. Great for users. But the miners hate that because they're the ones getting paid those transaction fees.

But without Ethereum 2.0 the network is doomed because it simply cannot keep up with demand.

At my day job we've moved to alternate networks and I can now sit back and eat popcorn - on this issue, at least.

Wake Up, Dumdum Video of the day

If you're not familiar with those characters, they're from Japanese virtual YouTuber group Hololive. Between them, those four alone - Gura, Korone, Amelia, and seen very briefly, Ollie - have over five million subscribers.

They described themselves as a "virtual idol company" until recently conceding that their talents are not remotely idol-like and changing it to "virtual entertainment company", but what they really produce is radically un-politically-correct comedic chaos in vast quantities.  It's not to everyone's taste but it's a pleasant relief from what's happening to so much of Western culture lately.

Twitch Is Worse Video of the Day

I mentioned this in passing a few days ago: Twitch will not only ban you over accusations of being associated with the wrong people outside of Twitch itself, they have set up an anonymous email tip line and passed the job of adjudication to an unnamed outside company.

Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube are awful, but Twitch is worse.

I'll take a look.  I have a couple of different ways to embed YouTube videos - including one that detects your browser version and adapts to suit - and I'll see if I can reproduce the problem.

It works out to 38kg of protons and assuming that they are entirely due to water implies a body weight of 69kg, including the neutrons.  Or 152 lb.

71 The Buttigeig talk reminds of back when I worked in DC. They have this "slug" transportation system that developed organically in response to the major roads leading into/out of DC during rush hour requiring more than one occupant per car. There are spots in Virginia and DC where people needing a ride line up, and then hitch a ride with someone driving who needs a passenger(or more, if they choose) to do their commute on these roads. A perfect system, a win-win where DC gets the carpooling they demand, and people get an informal system of participation, just show up at a designated spot, no tolls or tickets or schedules.

Worked great until in the late 90's a new DC police commisioner decided that these "slug" pickup and dropoff sites in the city were harming traffic, and announced they were banned. Well, the ban did not last long, because he messed up a wonderful, informal -- not state-managed -- system, He revoked the ban, and slugging continued.

101 71 Lizzy, those sites for getting a ride in to work sound like the Swoop Circle on Marine bases. Don't know if they exist anymore as most of the troops have cars.  You would go down there and find somebody heading in your direction, chip in a little gas money and more than likely get a ride back.  Usually busy before a long weekend.Of course it was abused a little and sometimes became UA Circle.

115 >>those sites for getting a ride in to work sound like the Swoop Circle on Marine bases.

Sounds similar -- but with slugging, there is no compensation, just a ride. Had a friend who commued and picked up sluggers, and there's an established etiquette, usually they might not even talk?

It sounds like Marxist Buttigeig is determined to micromanage transportation, and as slugging and swoop circles demonstrate, this is both unnecessary and doomed to make things worse, not better. To me, this is just as scary as the gun control talk. If they implement the ability to track and tax our movement, we are truly done. They will no doubt find ways to use this to control, such as variable tax rates based on where and when you travel (say, to "nudge" you into moving closer to big cities, or punish for traveling to places deemed a "poor choice" etc.). Cars are freedom. of movement, independence.

122 It's certainly one of those imponderables - government finances are insanity, completely unmoored from reality. Congress hasn't even passed an actual budget in maybe ten years. Make no mistake, virtually none of the insanity we are witnessing would be even remotely possible with a sound currency and remotely sane fiscal policy. Not even close. So it's more a matter of whether they can consolidate complete and utter control before the whole thing fucking lays an egg. I suspect that's why there has been this odor of impatience bordering on desperation in recent years. They have to get this done.

If I type www.ace.mu.nu in the browser, I get a message telling that AoSHQ is not registered on the (a) server.  And am blocked from getting in until I clear everything including browser caches, and -
then I can get in, but only if I do not type the AoSHQ in the browser window, but instead click on the very same www.ace.mu.nu listed in my Favorites folder.
I have no idea what up with that, but I suspect that clearing that problem up would cure a lot of the access problems and slowness of the site when refreshing or adding a comment.  But, hey!, what do I know.

Yup. Imagine how different 2020 would have been if we were all dependent on government transportation, that car travel was taxed to the point that only the rich could afford cars -- they could have locked people down in their cities (where many more would be compelled to live), and worse, stranded people when the riots broke out.
The fact that vaccine status is already being used to make completely unrelated decisions (re: who is allowed on ships transporting people fleeing the St. Vincent volcano) conjurs up all sorts of concerns that would have seemed unimaginable just a year ago,

Think about everything you've seen over the last year, up to and including Trump supporters being hunted down like Nazi war criminals for trespassing while John Sullivan was immediately released when the same people learned that he was BLM / antifa. Think about Pence's victory dance with Nancy Pelosi after he removed Trump from office.
Think about who it was that called up the National Guard to DC (Pence).
Trump was all alone in that building. He was all alone the entire four years.

This backup server (actually a virtual server) is only about one third the size of the main server, and we're suffering virtual traffic jams.  I have a second virtual server that I'll be bringing on line tomorrow that should sort things out while we wait for the main server to be brought back on line.

A gripe about eggs:  is it just me or does it seem like lately the egg shells are really hard?  I damn near had to slam the egg on the side to get it to crack, and it cracked longwise, dumped shell fragments into the pan and generally made a mess.  I've been cooking eggs like this for 40 years and I've never had as many issues as I have lately.

273 I just remembered that Prince Phillip's uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten (the last Viceroy of India) was killed by terrorists.  The terrorists killed the old guy and two children, seriously injuring other family members.
RIP Phil, you really were in the middle of history.

280 I used to have the telephone conversation from Pink Floyd's Young Lust off "The Wall" on my answering machine as the greeting/prompt.   That really confused a lot of people.
Phone rings..Clink of receiver being lifted
"Hello..?"
"Yes, a collect call for Mrs. Floyd from Mr. Floyd.
Will you accept the charges from United States?"
clunk! of phone being put down
"Oh, He hung up! That's your residence, right? I wonder why he hung up?
Is there supposed to be someone else there besides your wife there to answer?"
Phone rings again...clunk of receiver being picked up
"Hello?"
"This is United States calling, are we reaching...
interrupted by phone being put down "See he keeps hanging up, and it's a man answering."
whirr of connection being closed

281 I was in England when the IRA murdered Lord Mountbatten And a few of his grandchildren in a bomb placed on his boat. Him and Gen Brian Horrox can be seen often on clips of World at War videos.  Both to me are the most exciting I would have loved to meet.

309 Hey EU, will that same task force be working just as hard to correct illegitimate content takedowns based on false copyright claims?  That's kind of been a big problem for a while, because there is no real and immediate penalty for making false claims.  You'll need to more forcefully address the issue of copyright trolling before anyone will accept your demands for lightning-speed enforcement.
