— Ace Via Hot Air, Romney writes an open letter to President Obama in the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Dear Mr. President,Welcome to Ohio. I have a simple question for you: Where are the jobs?
As we enter the fourth year of your term, unemployment is over 8 percent and has been for your entire term. Nearly 23 million men and women are unemployed, underemployed or are no longer even looking for work. In the face of such challenges, many Americans have simply given up hope.
I recognize, of course, as do all Americans, that you inherited an economic crisis. But you've now had three years to turn things around. The record of those three years is clear. Your policies have failed, not only in Ohio, but across the nation.
The results are a continuing tragedy for millions upon millions of people. Everywhere I go, I meet Americans who are tired of being tired, and many of those who are fortunate enough to have a job are working harder for less. This is not the way it is supposed to be in America. This is not the way it needs to be.
Mr. President, forgive me for being blunt, but when it comes to economic affairs, you're out of your depth. Unlike you, I am not a career politician. Unlike you, I've spent more than two decades working in the private sector, starting new businesses and turning around failing ones. Undoing the damage you've done will be a daunting challenge. But I've learned a thing or two about how government policies can kill private investment and stifle job creation and I have a plan to get government out of the way.
...
Mr. President, your promises now ring hollow. If you have brought new ideas to Ohio for creating jobs, why have you waited three years to unveil them? Have you suddenly had a revelation, or is it because 2012 is an election year?
Captain Ed continues insisting we should not look at the unemployment rate -- lower than it ought to be, due to millions of people fleeing the American labor market, but at actual employment.
A thirty year low in the number of Americans working.
And this, Obama claims, constitutes "success"?

The chart-fu is strong in those graphs in the "actual unemployment" link that Ace includes above.
Now that is exactly what I've been wondering about. .....How do we show that things are really much, much worse than the bogus 'Unemployment Numbers' that the Barky administration is cranking out. .....And there it is.
It would be great if JohnE took that data and created some of his knockout graphics with it.

It's a big mistake by the GOP not to come up with a coherent summary of the Credit Crunch and why the bullshit Compassionate Conservatism only aided the Left's march into financial oblivion.
Romney could pull of a 'Nixon to China' of attacking the confluence of Wall Street and Big Government but he doesn't seem interested in diving into that mess.
If he would go a little populist it would expose a gaping gash under Obama waterline.

We add a bit over 1.5 million people a year due to the 'birth/death' balance in the US...
We add a bit over 1 Million LEGAL immigrants per year, 80% of which are working age.
So we need to create about 2.5 Million jobs a year, just to stay even...
Sooo... even though we are at about the same AMOUNT of people working in the US, as in 2009.... since we've added 7.5 Million people... the percentage of people working.. is lower....
We also need to stop looking at 'seasonaly adjusted' numbers... when looking at long term statistics... seasonaly adjusted means they are F'n with the stats, and unless the adjustment (which they don't give normaly, you have to dig) is the same year to year... it scews the data...
The RAW data is out there... but like the current 'inflation' numbers... BOTH parties really don't want to talk about how bad it is... because they'll ALL loose their jobs...

Housing bubble with MBS, CDS, banks leveraging at 50:1. Absolute corruption on the finance industry. Liar and NINJA loans that all payed a commission to the lending dude. An orgy of corrupt and irresponsible pratices...and the tax payer bailed them all out. How did it happen? IMO there is a structural problem with the current Banking system, and oversite... and one which has not, and will not, be fixed.
Banks use Fractional lending, to lend more money than they have assets, based on the idea that only 'so' many of those loans, will default. So if one in 10 default, they have to keep enough money to cover that 1... while reaping the profits from the others.
When the Housing overprice bubble collapsed, the 'assets' they were using to cover all the loans, were suddenly not there... so the house of cards was about to collapse.
Add in that the paper trail on those mortgages was not clear... as we found out when people were foreclosing on properties?
So the Government stepped in, saying they were going to 'buy' up those troubled assets.... but did not. They gave the banks a bunch of non interest (Fed Res) and low interest (TARP) funds, which the big banks used to buy up the smaller banks....
The banks then did NOT foreclose on many of the properties they should have... and so did not take the financial hit (on paper) they should have. Many many people are living in houses they have not paid mortgages on for over a year or more...
So, almost 4 years later, the 'bubble' caused by the housing, is being slowly deflated, instead of allowing it to burst... allowing the now much bigger banks, to post profits... based on loaning us money they get from the Fed Res almost 0% interest.
The other thing happening, is banks are using Fed Res low interest money, to buy US Gov Debt... which does gain interst.... prop'ing up the house of cards for as long as the Fed Res Bank continues to print money...

Yup... economics 101... when you have more money available to chase a product, the price will rise. The Gov, through its actions, made more and larger loans available... so Housing costs went through the roof.
Same thing has happened with College educations. Costs have skyrocketed because too much loan money is available... so there is no competition.

Neither I suspect. I'm unclear what you mean by "repudiated" T-bills. If you're impling the Federal government effectively writes those off and never repays them, in theory wouldn't that cause a drop in the money supply? (Since the fed would then be unable to push more money.)
The hyper inflation is still a few years out simply because you need a recovery (and thus consumption) for the inflation to really get off the ground. I have no idea where the piles of cash injected into the economy are sitting but they aren't being used yet. (And injecting more in won't change this.)

Posted by: toby928© at May 05, 2012 05:37 PM (NG097)
Yup. It was. ....We are on a worldwide Oil Economy. ...Like it or not, it's true.
Someone upthread was unclear about "what happened" when the economy crashed. .....It was the spike in gas prices that triggered it.
Well, it was because of a long series of things dating back to Carter days.....but when the price of gas skyrocketed in '08, that was the last straw. ....People suddenly could not afford to pay their Mortgages, because of their long commutes to work.
And millions of dollars of people's 'disposable' income is still being sucked out of their pockets....and flowing into foreign coffers. ....This is the main reason why things are not recovering.
The price of everything has gone up, because of the continued high price of gasoline. .....Because it is used to produce food and goods....and then to transport those things to market.
When people can't afford to buy as much....then the jobs to make those things die away. .....Add this dire fact to the continued higher corporate taxes, higher minimum wage and higher regulatory burden that businesses face....and you have the current recipe for doom that we are watching play out.
And, of course....our dollar itself is shrinking and becoming worth less, as the goverment prints more money in order to keep its bloated self afloat.

They won't be. The Banks themselves have a vested interest in shoring up their only product (the dollar). They will continue to buy US debt... and as the only oversite on the banking industry is the US Government???
So the Fed Res will continue to give the banks low interest money... so the banks can continue to buy debt.
And as an interesting note... those same Fed T Bonds ARE considered a fungible asset, and so can be used as the base for fractional lending...

It would actually be a shorter list to list out what didn't cause the economic crisis. Basically, anyone who participating in either setting the housing bubble in motion or keeping it in motion was to blame.
The thing is though, in my opinion, that very few of the actions taken were actually illegal. Most of them turned out to be bets that went south or policies that turned out to be short-sighted.
That said, there were many commentators who pointed out that those bets were likely to go south and that those policies were short-sighted, but weren't listened to. While it isn't illegal to ignore people who eventually turn out to be right, those who did so should be impugned for their lack of judgment. But, if lack of judgment were a disqualification from having power, you'd send 90% of the members of Congress home for good. Ain't gonna happen.

Consider the following:
1) Mormons store guns and food "just in case". Not kidding, just ask one. Guns are good, always.
2) Their religion can be considered a little weird.. stones and a magic hat...whatever...but, OK...but does it affect me?
No, when they knock on your door unexpectedly, just tell them you're not interested, they'll go away. They are really nice people - just odd...just like the SouthPark episode said.
3) Mormons love America - where else would they be allowed to exist? Really...
4) Muslims hate America. Sharia "law" is in direct opposition to the US Constitution. There is no middle ground here - Islam and the US Constitution cannot coexist.
5) I'm not Mormon - just calling as i see it.
SO, i think Romney is by FAR the preferable guy vs. the red-diaper baby muslim marxist we have right now. I wish Romney were more conservative, but at the margin, we've got no choice.

That's because they never actually made it into the economy per se. I think they're just funny money sloshed on paper onto bank balance sheets so they can cover nominal reserve requirements as bad mortgage loan "assets" shift over into the "liability" column as foreclosures are filed.
There's a lot of banks that would be declared insolvent if all this bad mortgage shit were being handled honestly.

Currency devaluation is the traditional escape hatch. I don't think we'll see hyper inflation, but $10 for a loaf of bread within 10 years isn't unrealistic.
A slow rolled devaluation of 50-80% over 10 years or so would be all it takes to give the long term debt holders a major haircut.

7) No more goddamn mileage regulations on new cars. If customers want to buy Hummers and can afford them leave them the fuck alone.
9) In response to #8, make voter ID mandatory through a new amendment to the constitution. (Should make a lot of folks, self-deport.)

Right so I covered that, theoretically it'd cause a contraction of the monetary supply (unless we're still going full tilt Keynesian, in which case the freed up money from our debt interest would be spent elsewhere I suppose, but that's all highly theoretical")
@128,
That explains QE1 and 2, and TARP, but there's a whole stimulas, that even if was embezzled should have ended up somewhere.

Just imagine the banking melt-down if we required them to go back to mark to market.

That's what I think, although it'll be
- he was too smart for his own good
- he was ahead of his time
- we didn't live up to his awesomeness
I also completely 100% predict a Black Studies theory that he was hand-picked by evil Whites as the first Black president because he was incompetent and doomed to fail. Yes, you will see it. He was selected early in his youth, the records of his incompetence were deliberately buried by the scheming Whites, he was groomed and encouraged and educated to "talk white" so he could win a national election, all by a cabal of White racists who knew all they had to do was drop the idealistic neophyte into the waters of the Potomac and he'd die of either boiling or drowning.
I'm seriously thinking of sending this to a bunch of Black Studies departments and seeing where it goes.

That kind of papers over a question; are you advocating a nation ID? Seems frought with problems; states rights, Federal intrusion, etc.

I suspect Obama will blame that 30 year participation rate on a "Aging nation of Baby Boomers" next. Not quite sure how to counter that because a discussion of the demographic makup on the US and how it has or hasn't changed over time) will likely bore the average voters.

that... and a lot of money is sitting in Markets that are effectivly large betting pools.
Take... the oil futures market.
April 23, 2010, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) Group reported a total trading volume of 608,421 futures contracts
Each contract is 1000 barrels... at $100 a barrel? thats $60,800,000,000 in ONE market, on a single day... gambled... of those contracts, only about 4% are ever actualy delivered as oil... The rest is just money sitting around, in a virtual Vegas... producing nothing.

I'm a small L libertarian... but on this? IMO we should have a National ID tied to Citizenship, Voting, Passport, Drivers License, and a National Concealed carry Law...

I made it an amendment, so it has to be approved by a lot of states.

Now try to imagine McCain giving that speech.
I don't agree with the guy on everything, but Romney is competent. His campaign is going to slash Obama into tatters over the next six months.
The MSM may still drag their magical Negro across the finish line, but they're going to know they were in a fight.

Possibly. I was telling someone else the other day, the key is to understand that Obama is not a Democrat. He's a Chicago Socialist who happens to run under the Democrat banner. A lot of Dems are discovering this, and learning that his loyalties do not lie with the party.

Why not just have the states tighten up their own ID systems? Amendments should have a pretty high bar to jump before we declare it necessary. I think the first question all conservatives must ask when discussing an issue is something along the lines of, " A ) Does the problem rise to the level that only the Federal government can and should resolve it? B ) Is amending the Constitution the only way it can be revolved?"
Clearly most conservatives would stipulate that A ) has been fulfilled, but B ) is not a clear cut case.

Ack 18-65! Then it's even worse than I thought. I had assumed at least at some level that retirements and an aging population had played a part. Well crap.

There are so many dimensions to his game-playing. Black Americans claim him as their own. The professional race-mongerers will of course always see him as a Black person destroyed by Whites.

he'll be asking Valerie Jarrett for a job. srsly, where is there for him to go? All his lackeys will have sinecures, media jobs, consultancies. He's too big for all that, though, and being the ex-King of Hoohooland only lasts so long before people get sick of letting you crash on their couches and boring you silly at banquets.

I have a slightly different spin. Whitey knew the four years after the 2008 crash were going to be awful and set up the black man to be in charge during the catastrophe and take the blame for it.

Financial types often point out that due to population increases, we have between 200k - 300k net new entrants into the job market each MONTH. US Census says that US population has been increasing by over 1% each year, so that 200k - 300k new net job entrants every month rings true.
In other words we need 200k - 300k new jobs to be created each month just to stay even. When Obama and his minions tout the number of "jobs created", I NEVER hear anyone point out that there have been over 7 million new entrants into the job market since Obama was elected. So "4 million jobs created or 'saved'" is a huge net loss.
When Bush was Prez, the population growth aspect of the job market was commonly pointed out. Suddenly under Obama, it's rarely mentioned
Where are the youtube videos of Pelosi decrying GW Bush's "miserable" unemployment numbers back in the good 'ole days when unemployment was 5%?
