Democratic National Convention Going Anti-Akin; To Become Celebration of Abortion
— Ace

Well, that's the tendentious reading of the Washington Examiner, but it does seem like a fair characterization.

Democrats said that they will feature Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parent Action Fund, Nancy Keenan, president of the NARAL Pro-Choice America and Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown University student whose plea for federal birth control funding drew the ire--and a subsequent apology--from Rush Limbaugh.

What's more, the Democrats are expanding their list of women ready to assail the GOP on women's issue, adding Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski and actress Eva Longoria to the list that already includes Sen. John Kerry and Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren.

Bless their hearts. (Second chart especially.) It's hard to know which way the abortion issue cuts because you'll have a majority saying they're pro-life but also a majority saying they think abortion should be legal in certain circumstances. Either way, a majority at least gesturally identifies as pro-life; this is not the political dynamite Democrats seem to believe it is.

In one of the dumbest stories I've ever read -- dumb question, dumb answer -- Paul Ryan refuses to define "forcible rape." Which is an idiotic question to ask -- everyone knows what forcible rape is. Forcible rape is distinguished from statutory rape, which is illegal and considered rape due to the youthful age of the victim, and yet is nevertheless consensual. Statutory rape is so-called because the statute defines it as rape, even though a witness would not see the characteristics of what "rape" is usually taken to be -- i.e., force, coercion.

So why is Paul Ryan badgered on the meaning of a word which has had the same definition for 150+ years? Just so the media can get video of him saying "Rape."

"Forcible rape" is a common term in law. This is not some newfangled Xtianist make-'em-up. If you google forcible rape you'll see, I don't know, 20 million hits at least, I'd guess.

And what I don't understand is why Paul Ryan doesn't just answer. I guess maybe because he doesn't want to get into line drawing, like "I might not oppose abortion in the case of forcible rape but I wouldn't in the case of statutory rape," and I guess that's because the American public is stupid and has no idea what common terms mean.

Here's an Odd Fact: As far as sex-crimes go, there's actually another category.

What if the woman actually consents, but she only consents due to fraud or trickery? There actually are such cases; for example, doctors have told women that in order to examine them they'd have to probe them with their penises (no, this really happened; there are cases in the books).

There are lots of varieties of rape-by-trickery, including slipping into a woman's bed, counting on her to mistake you for her husband. (This really happens.)

In earlier days, proffering an offer of marriage just to induce a woman to sleep with you, with no intent of actually carrying through, was also a crime of this type.

Anyway, there is actually an old common-law crime for this sort of rape, but they didn't call it rape. In the common law, until about 50 years ago, when people started realizing this sounded wrong, they called this crime "Seduction."

No, seriously. Look it up.

Frank Sinatra was charged with it:

n more modern times, Frank Sinatra was charged in New Jersey in 1938 with seduction, having enticed a woman "of good repute to engage in sexual intercourse with him upon his promise of marriage. The charges were dropped when it was discovered that the woman was already married."[6]

Anyway, apparently the media now has its stupid hat on and is going to ask Paul Ryan to define words whose meanings are quite clear, just so they can get him on tape talking about rape.

Regarding the common law  that Ace referenced.  There was   a  lot of genius in the common law.  It  didn't address everything, but it addressed the big things.  And it adapted and changed with the times  and with culture.

Thankfully we have replaced that with statutory law and even better administrative law.  It has finally led to someone successfully arguing that they did  everything the  law  required  because they reported child rape to their  "superiors"  per administrative regulations.

He may not want to try to define rape because in most States the law is not defined as raper.  It is various levels of criminal sexual assault that start with inappropriate touching and goes all the way up to criminal sexual assault and battery which is what most people think of as rape.

In SC that last category when performed against a girl less than 14 is still punishable by the death penalty.

It's an idiotic, ridiculous question, bless their hearts, and there's no possible good way to answer it. All of these fall under forcible rape, how many people knew there were this many classifications? Do you think the average person who is not a lawyer would? Wasn't it Illinois that wanted to define rape as when a woman changed her mind about consent at any point, up to and include while the guy was in her? So you could go to bed with a woman, get consent, slip it in her, be jackhammering away and if she said "hey no changed my mind" and you didn't instantly pull out and leap to the other side of the room, it was rape. Then there's the whole Dworkin thing that all het sex is rape. I do not blame PVPE Ryan for avoiding the question.

Which is why people on our side didn't need to go all eleventy!! on the Akin issue. Ace's post indicates the two main reasons why I wasn't  as concerned or worried  about  Akin's statement  as  others.

1.  The Dems will overreact.  Half this country may consider themselves pro-choice,  though many would say, I am personally against it but don't want to interfere with someone else's choice.  The Dems platform is your choice is wrong if it is life.  And you should be able to do it at 8 months (or even after born in Obama's case).  And by the way, we should all pay for them with our federal tax dollars.  I'm fairly certain the right's stance is more mainstream.

2.  Ryan is  a smart and articulate messenger.  Let the media ask  him.

The GOP convention should highlight the donk War on Women, namely the toll that the high unemployment rate is taking on American women. Across the races, the unemployment rate for women is lower than for men. So many working wives' husbands have been laid off, leaving the woman as the sole breadwinner as the husband looks for a job. This is the case in all income levels, it's hitting white collar professionals as hard as their blue collar counterparts.

It's a stressful time for so many wives and mothers (not to mention single moms), exacerbated by a preazy who is bound and determined to hamstring American enterprise, therefore chilling the job market.

Posted by: kallisto at August 22, 2012 11:56 AM (jm/9g)

200 It's simple, the media is colluding with the white house to set its programming for the DNC convention. It doesn't matter because Obama will be toast after GOP convention. I think 3 days of ugly leftist harpies screeching "no rape is legitimate, romney" is going to put America to sleep.

really happens.)

Where? In opera?
----   That actually happended to me. While I was passed out in the living room after a long night of partying, a former friend went to my bedroom and was in the process of climbing into bed when my wife woke up and screamed bloody murder. Luckily he didn't get a chance to lay a hand on her.   Much to my everlasting shame and regret, due to my incapacitated state, the bastard was able to run out of the house and literally skip town before I was able to react. The Staten Island Advance ( http://bit.ly/ReDRtS ) said the message was left Tuesday on a reporter's voicemail. 290 i dunno. on the one hand, a celebration of all the wonders of abortion isn't really gonna change many hearts and minds. on the other hand, if the democrats are able to successfully maintain the national focus on vaginagate, it could end up having disastrous results for right-wing enthusiasm. furthermore, ANY opportunity for the left to talk about anything other than the economy can only make romney's job harder. sigh. i keep hoping that christianity will eventually get with the 21st-century programme; even hinduism and buddhism have updated their spiritual philosophies to fit better within the modern landscape of scientific knowledge and theory. (for example, we *know* that prayer works -- even to heal you, sometimes -- by confirming your deeply-held biases. *of course* god is going to tell you to stay the fucking course if you ask him.) every time i think there's hope for the modern christian, i end up reading some story about vaginas that can prevent the admission of rape-sperm...and, what's worse, i see with my own two eyes the apparent lack of shame christian politicians have in holding such beliefs! i know i'm knee-jerking, here, but i think i'm entitled to it, given the circumstance. these are the same people who were convinced it was more important to get santorum in there fighting against condoms and fag marriage than it was to fix the economy so that we'd actually still HAVE a society to worry about in twenty years.

As a state Senator, Barack's  recorded  rationalization  as  to  why  they  should  let  abortion-surviving  babies  die  in  utility  closets  is  bound  to make  an  impression.    I'm  sure  he  still  doesn't  get  why  people  think  its barbaric.    If  they  want  the  discussion, oblige them.

There is a nurse that took a child out of the garbage and cradled it until it died.   Her recounting of the incident would also make an impression especially on that jumbo screen set-up they have at the Convention.

Republicans  wouldn't  discuss  this  because  someone  might  suggest  that they  don't  think  Obama  is  a  nice  guy.   Republicans, enough  with  the  kid  gloves.

If you are underage and cannot control yourself or if you get lied to then you have to carry to term whether you want to or not, and that is not merely just, but also something people will support.

349 >>>just so they can get him on tape talking about rape.

Not just talking about it, parsing it into different types of rape. Remember Akin used the term "legitimate" to qualify rape. They want to get Ryan placing different forms of Rape (Statutory vs Forcible) into different categories on camera. Not just to get a soundbyte of him saying "rape" so they can meld the words "Legitimate Rape" right next to Ryan parsing out different kinds of rape, and hand the footage cart blanche to Obama.

A pure trap, and Ryan was absolutely 100% in the right for declining the invitation to step in it. So the best they can do now is huff and puff about how Ryan won't step in their trap.

365 Looks like Obama is in trouble with Hispanics. This from the SurveyUSA poll: he new SurveyUSA poll showed Obama and Romney dividing the Hispanic vote 48 percent for the president and 47 percent for the former Massachusetts governor - a result even the pollster questioned. In June, a Latino Decisions poll showed Obama leading Romney among Hispanics, 69 percent to 20 percent. "We were surprised by the Hispanic result, too," Leve said, adding it's difficult to accurately survey Latinos. "It raised some eyebrows, but that is a snapshot and that is what we see." Pair that with this from a poll conducted by Telemundo which has this bit of information that won't be in the headlines: Just 61 percent of Latinos indicated a high level of enthusiasm in the upcoming election (registering an “8,” “9” or “10” on a 10-point scale). That’s 20 points below the average of 81 percent of all voters. And almost 20 points below 2008 levels for Latinos at about the same time before the election. ________________ In Nevada they are wondering why they found those results--well a lot of Hispanics own small businesses. That's your answer.

Nothing strange about it.

With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chili peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to oral sex with dogs (tough and dangerous), sucking snake dicks (tougher but not as dangerous), and blowing roasted grasshoppers (crunchy). Like many Indonesians, Lolo followed a brand of Islam that could make room for the more ancient animist and Hindu faiths. He explained that a man took on the super powers of whatever he had oral sex with: One day soon, he promised, he would bring home a piece of alien dick for us to share. ThatÂ’s how things were, one long adventure, the bounty of a young boyÂ’s life. ...

385 to be serious, many of the more radical feminists (eg, McKinnon and Dworkin) pushed the idea that all heterosexual intercourse is a kind of rape, because women are an oppressed class in America and therefor are unable to give consent. It naturally follows that women must have a right to abortion under all circumstances and at someone else's expense in order to end all those pregnancies that result from all those rapes (otherwise,  men will get women pregnant in order to force women to depend on men for survival, which is why we need all those other government programs for unmarried mothers.)

The philosophical purpose behind the exploration of faith is the establishment of an absolute morality. Yes that can lead to judgementalism, however the alternative 100% rational "Everyone follows rules except for me when no one's looking" conclusion of relative morality is much much less desirable.

420 BETTENDORF, Iowa – Mitt Romney bounded into the battleground state of Iowa today, aided by a new, non-partisan government report that painted a grim picture of the state of the economy, using the new data to return his campaign’s narrative to his favorite catch phrase: the Obama economy isn’t working.

The government report, released today by the Congressional Budget Office, estimated a $1.1 trillion deficit for 2012, and said that if the tax and spending cuts go through as planned in January that “such fiscal tightening will lead to economic conditions in 2013 that will probably be considered a recession.”

The report also predicted that the countryÂ’s unemployment rate would remain above 8 percent for the rest of the year.

Nobody wants to talk about economics when the there are important issues like abortion and Sandy Fluke. Over 8% for the rest of the year. Damn, Barry just might not be around to see that economic recovery that's just around the corner

True.  LeMaitre arrived at the theory mathematically but was very happy that it was Biblically consistent in form.  Of course, Einstein expressed the same idea when he said that G-d doesn't play dice with the universe.  Einstein believed in the idea of the ultimate perfection of the universe, which is tantamount to traditional Western notions of G-d, save some of the accoutrements of formal religions.

426 latest transmission from Cocksucker One, formerly Moonbat One: Subject: Big news on voter ID laws [redacted], last week a judge upheld the new voter ID law in Pennsylvania. This is the law that the Pennsylvania House Republican leader said "is gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania" because it potentially disenfranchises 750,000 voters. Well, that's what he thinks. A huge coalition of 100+ labor and civil rights groups has come together to do the door knocking, phone banking and voter education necessary to make sure everyone in this must-win swing state can still cast a ballot. At Daily Kos, we're helping out by running online ads in Pennsylvania to sign up more than 1,000 volunteers so that this coalition has the people power it needs. Please, click here to contribute $5 to Daily Kos so that we can sign up the thousands of volunteers needed to overcome Pennsylvania's voter ID law. To get a sense of how blatant an attempt at voter suppression this voter ID law is, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will not extend business hours or hire new staff to assist the nearly one million people who now need IDs in order to vote. Further, the contract to educate Pennsylvania voters about the law went to a public relations firm with deep ties to the Republican Party. To stop this, we need to get thousands of volunteers on the ground working with an experienced coalition that knows how to get voters to the polls and in compliance with the new law. We can do it, but we need your help. Please click here to contribute $5 to Daily Kos so we can run online ads to sign up thousands of volunteers in order to make sure everyone in Pennsylvania can still vote.

"jackhammering away"? Does that type of activity require a hard hat and OSHA inspection?

431 To claim that you plan to raise your child as a Christian and then to teach the child to respect science as well shows that you're either completely full of shit or that you are just as much of an obnoxious, worthless academic that is everything wrong with our public education system.

Not so fast, ErikW.  I  can also  equate  scientific reality to God.  It's quite easy.  As I see it, all science is is God revealing his creation to us.  The two are extremely compatible.

432 I guess I must be the only person alive today who watched the William Kennedy Smith trial back when Court TV broadcast it.  Uh, the liberal Left has been redefining "rape" for a generation to mean anything any particular woman decides it means. From drunk sex, to "he didn't bring me a donut the next morning", to "my name is NOT Susan", or whatever the hell Smith called What's-Her-Name after sex on the beach, to "ok, it's been a week and he still hasn't called so I must have been raped that night I begged him to fuck me".

Right absolutely correct. All Christians are hypocrites, we all are really. But without a good dose of that publicly shaming others for not even aspiring to have better morality they have kept Western Civilization would have burned 2K years ago.

I love folks like you (Bless your heart) who think that someone calling an alert to a shameless lack morality is completely baseless because of some inevitable shameful imperfection they might have. It nullifies any capability to meaningfully discuss morality from an absolute sense. It is ironically, aloof self riotousness "Look how judgmental those people are!!! Snicker Snicker!" criticizing the aloof self riotous who are themselves sinners criticizing sinners.

The irony. Ohhh the irony.

435 I read a book about Howard Hughes that indicated he was guilty of this third type of rape.  It described how his house safe was broken-into and the contents included love letters, papers, and nice engagement rings.  Hughes apparently liked to cruise for debutantes, and their mothers were more than willing to offer up their progeny if Hughes kept up appearances with professions of interest in marriage.

Think about the cool "Biden" drinking game everyone could play. Every single time Biden says "literally," take a drink. When he flashes his pearly whites to punctuate one of his idiotic statements to pretend he said something profound, take a drink. When he loses his train of thought and says something factually false but it would really help his point of view if it were actually true, take a drink.

98% of viewers playing the game would be hammered within the first 45 minutes.

447 @383 from purely biological and libertarian standpoints, yes, in fact, i appose abortion. i don't believe in souls or anything mystical/magical like that. i do believe that the right to life must necessarily be presupposed for any other "rights" to even be rationally considered. i further believe that the value of a life does not lie in its viability or immediate productivity, but in the fascinating miracle of its development (and, more abstractly in the case of humans, its social potential). furthermore, i believe in personal responsibility, and especially in cases of sexual indiscretion, i have a hard time accepting the validity of "but i just wasn't ready for a baby" arguments for discretionary abortion. nevertheless, the science is also pretty clear that early-term foetuses do not feel pain and are obviously not cognisant of the full ramifications of their abortions. it would seem that in some cases, it may not be appropriate to cause, for example, a raped mother to carry the child of her rapist to term. the world sucks, and shitty things happen. sometimes, there are really bad consequences. i'm not so certain that we should punish a mother -- and yes, it IS an extreme psychological punishment for some mothers to have to carry the child of their rapist to term -- for being raped. this isn't -- thank god!! -- an islamic theocracy. the baby of two unwanted parents TYPICALLY has a troubled life, to boot, so we may be punishing the child, as well, by forcing the mother to carry it to term in such instances. i am wary of such arguments, however, because i recognise the rather widespread applicability of "unwanted children" arguments in the abortion debate. now, if the mother puts more value in carrying the child to term, even when she is raped, good for her! but not all women are that strong! some women's psychologies are such that they simply cannot abide by such a "punishment" -- and, of course, mother's psychological stress has terrible implications for NGF epigenetics in her developing baby. still, i consider myself pro-life. i appose "abortion on demand"; i oppose abortion as retroactive contraception. and no, it didn't require "association with christianity', in my case...i was pro-choice until i was an undergraduate in bioengineering. science. ♥

448 @452 A lot of religious conservatives are just recently waking up and realizing how much less power they hold, then they thought they did.  Those types who thought reelecting Bush would somehow reverse say gay marriage.

IMO the Tea Party and Chick Fil support was an example of those at the head of the class now realizing they actually have more influence then they supposed, if they are willing to get their hands greasy

People who are busy with life can often miss obvious stuff for years at a time.  Unless Romney screws everyone over and the economy returns to lukewarm I dont think any of these middle class religious Ents are going back into hibernation for 4-12 years.

450 @ 455 What creeps me out about people like you is that you actually have to take classes to further reinforce your atheistic beliefs on life where as for mine and many like me, it just comes naturally. Science and its advancement is an amazing and wonderful thing but to base a belief in life and the ethics thereof is dangerous and unnatural.

454 @458 yeah, being told everything you are supposed to believe about ethics by some guy in a pulpit who is simply building on the thousands of years of humans poking around in the dark till we get it right is sooooo much more "natural" than actually investigating things as they are to try to develop a logical reason for doing things a certain way. i said i wasn't atheist. i actually believe in some sort of god; the current cosomological model (big bang) requires a Prima Causa, and anyway at some point along finite regression of "creation", causality itself, that most important of First Principles, requires some sort of creator that doesn't have to obey the laws of THIS physics. atheism requires the same sort of unprovable assumptions that religion requires, and i'm not huge on faith in ANYTHING besides my super-awesome boyf who rescued me from abject social isolation. anyway, all ethics are subjective. i don't care what kind of magical man in the sky you believe in; all ethics are STILL subjective, and that's why official ecclesiastical interpretations of the scriptures are changed every so often...in order that they better reflect modern sensibilities and modern SUBJECTIVE thought. it's not a hard leap to make: even if god is perfect and has perfect, absolute morality, humans are not perfect, and must interpret all of the wisdom god has passed down to them through the subjective filter of their own psychologies. your ethics comes from what someone else tells you; my ethics comes from actually observing NATURE. which is more natural? sorry that intellectual curiosity "creeps you out". honestly, the ill-historied ramifications of group-think should probably make you a lot more scared of sheeple (i.e., those who unquestioningly believe what others tell them and call it "natural") than anyone who likes to question "but why?"!

Is a very fancy way of saying "let there be light".

That's just brilliant.  I've never been able to smack down smarmy militant atheists that succinctly.  If your cosmology begins and ends with The Big Bang, you are tacitly filling in all the prerequisite blanks with some form of the mysticism that you reflexively sneer at.

459 Having this entire pro-life - pro-choice debate at this juncture in the campaign is absolutely insane. We were on such a nice trajectory for the triple crown. Obama is inept, corrupt and represents the values of only a small percentage of the populace. This election really is for all the chips on the table. The damage that he would succeed in inflicting on the U.S. and the rest of the world if he were to get a second term is simply horrifying.

He has been desperately searching for anything that will distract voters from his abysmal record and here we are handing him just what he was looking for on a silver plate. This election as everyone should be aware is about the Independent voters. Hard core dems and republicans made up their minds two years ago who they were voting for. It's the Independents who must be won over. With the RNC taking the hard core, right of right, overturn Roe vs. Wade mentality I expect Romney will lose a full ten points of the popular vote he would otherwise have had if he'd kept on message. Add in the 7% that Obama will no doubt garner from dead people, felons, welfare recipients, ACORN fraud drives and Union fraud and this election is no longer close to "in the bag". I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the stupidity of this as so much is at stake.
