Democratic Underground Friday Comedy Jam
— LauraW

We have disagreements in the threads here. Sometimes there's a little back-and-forth about what is the truly conservative position on an issue.

But it's pretty rare that we get into arguments here where many of the commenters are in denial about the nature of the world. Where one side simply does not understand, and refuses to understand, that the nuts-and-bolts pragmatic foundation for their side of the argument can not exist in objective reality.

But elsewhere, on other blogs, such is the difficulty when leftists discuss math....accounting...standard business practices....why cities run out of money...etc.
Now, we here in RealityLand know what is happening to these Democrat-run cities that are going bankrupt. Leftish policies inexorably lead to a situation where the public workforce (and welfare cases) place huge demands on a tax base that can no longer support it. Once they start going into debt just to honor old promises, the deal is done.

Fiscal insanity has a logical conclusion. Conservatives accurately predict these events, all the time. And by 'all the time,' I mean 'every time.' Every. Frickin'. Time. But these geniuses never listen, because we are dumb&mean, and they are smart&caring.

Below: It's a DU link, yes. But go on ahead and give them the traffic. They deserve it. The whole thread is hysterical, as is the next one I'll link. I have removed names and formatting just to make the discussion more compact.

PLEASE go to the links and review the rest of the conversations. The people who understand math and business are accused of being conservative trolls! That's some kind of accidental compliment.

These are the kinds of arguments you get into when encouraging expansion in the private sector is absolutely unacceptable, but yet you also want to eat their lunch forever.

So. Scranton is now paying minimum wage to its employees. Where to go from here?

1. They're flat broke. What do you suggest they do?

-----------------------
2. I suggest they raise taxes -
duh.

---------------------------
6. The mayor proposed that, but the people in Scranton don't want higher taxes,...
...so the City Council refused to raise them. Any other ideas?

-------------------------------
7. I don't care if rich people don't want to be taxed -
and yes I have plenty of other ideas. Have you ever heard of socialism?

-----------------------------
10. Most property owners in Scranton are not rich

-------------------------
13. I'm not going to get in any fights about defining the word "rich" -
because I see plenty of that divisive, distracting behavior going on in other threads on this board and it only benefits the very rich when everyone else is fighting.

If folks are well enough off to own property and want police/firemen around to protect it they are going to have to understand they might not be buying a second home this year ...

--------------------
26. Many of these 'well off' property owners are retirees on fixed incomes

-----------------------
28. Again, will not bite on that. Property owners who expect fire and police
protection had better figure out whether they can pony up some cash.

This is what it comes down to - I really don't care if Aunt Ethyl has $2 million in the bank and wants to leave it all to her favorite cat charity - I'm sure she is a very nice person.

People have families and are now being told they are going to "live" on $7.25/hour.

-------------------
21. $7.25/hour is not a living wage --do you suggest employees stop living?

-------------------
32. Oh course not
But you have to be aware of the tax structure for municipalities in PA, as well as the fact that Scranton is a largely working class town.

------------------
38. OK so then the state or federal gov't will have to move some money from
A wealthier population to this poorer one. Easy peasy. Problem solved.

------------------
45. Sounds easy to me. nt

Indeed! What could be simpler? Theft! Theft is the answer to all of our troubles. Works every time it's been tried.

Taxing wealth is the next logical step
That way the wealthy who are sitting on the sidelines with trillions of dollars will have two choices. Invest it in creating jobs themselves or give it to the government so they can invest it to hire new workers and retain the ones we already have and pay them a fair days pay for a fair days work.

Turns into use it or lose it.

There is how to get some investment going.

------------------------
7. So you want to take cash from businesses

----------------------
9. Businesses can either invest it themselves hiring workers or the government will tax them and do it
It is the businesses choice.

---------------------------
10. so to hell with their need to pay existing workers
or future obligations.

Many businesses sit on cash when the economy is slower so they're not desperate for cash, relying on receivables when the bills come due. If you've got 10 million in cash but a 1 million dollar payroll to meet every month, it's not really that outrageous

-------------------------
19. You should probably go work for Romney

That last response was directed at the same guy but not the same comment that precedes it in my heavily-snipped excerpt. Again, read the whole thing, it is hilarious and also a bit sad.

There is a lot of frustration among the would-be thieves that those who have responsibly saved money will not just subvert their personal financial future to that of the public sector.

89. Why this thread scares me

My income has already been taxed once. I am self-employed, so I've also had to pay self-employment taxes over the years. And no, I don't work as a banker, I don't exploit my workers (unless you call my own long hours at the job self-exploitation) and I produce a product that actually gets exported and brings money INTO the U.S. I don't trust any safety net to protect my retirement, so I have been faithfully saving for decades, in secure investments such as municipal bonds and CDs. I have accumulated enough to help my kids out with their college educations.

And now, because I've been scrupulous about saving and a careful investor, this OP would levy an extra tax on me, for no reason except that I've socked away enough for a comfortable retirement?

She hasn't been taught that when other people confiscate the comfort that she's worked her whole life for, it is because their pure hearts are filled with compassion. She probably graduated college before that became part of the regular curriculum.

Her opponents on that thread- those are the people who fancy themselves high-functioning intellectuals. Those are the people who are always accusing conservatives of suffering from cognitive dissonance. Is it any wonder that when they're put in charge of a budget, it's like giving Lennie a puppy to play with?

They can't seem to learn a simple lesson, after the same experiment turns out the same way, time after time after time. And to see them puzzling it out in public is to know why. Ideology is a more potent motivator to them than actual results.

12 Simply hilarious how anyone who is against having their taxes raised is doing so because they want to be able to buy a second home.  In Scranton.

Not that these people might simply barely getting by and are trying not to lose the one home they have.

Sadly those kind of people are in the majority where I live. And they are probably teaching your kids.

Last saturday I was in the checkout line at costco and there was a nice middle class dude with his kids in line ahead of me. here's the exchange:

"hey Dad, they approved that new high speed rail to Los Angeles. Isnt that cool? I cant wait to ride that?"

"Yes, I think thats probably a good thing. But you can bet it will cost a lot more than they say."

"My teacher says it will be more economical than flying. and way better for the environment. Plus it will provide jobs for people in the central valley"

"Well I guess thats better than the government spending all that money on wars and corporate welfare!"

I fear that these people are typical. And they probably vote. We are so doomed!

41 The insanity is that we're preying on the productive to fund unproductivity.

Unless you're doing something to keep the unproductivity you're trying to fund under strict containment, the process you've built ensures that unproductivity will GROW, requiring a bigger chunk of the productive to be taken to continue to fund it.

It's an ass-backward system that gets glossed over by somebody yelling 'compassion.'  Protecting a dysfunctional system isn't compassion, sorry.

<<Then let's take homes and other assets...>>

Got that? Just take it. Forget the literal fact that a VAST majority of "second homes" are actually rental investment properties that barely pay for themselves and are worth more as a tax shelter/write off whose main purpose is an investment in the future...

...anyone who has a second home (according to the genius who posted the above quote) is wealthy and should be heavily taxed.

Posted by: blindside at July 13, 2012 08:20 AM (x7g7t)

52 What is even funnier is the idea that only government can provide these services, fire, police, garbage collection.

I have a second home in a gated community at the beach.  We pay for the police, the garbage and give the county money for our fire station.

It costs a help of a lot less than the taxes in CLT and when we need something they come immediately.  I guess not having half a city of dead beats to look after makes for a lot more effective police department.

Libtards are just children in arrested development. Running a household, balancing a checkbook, running a business are all icky grown-up things that their square fathers did (or do). It might cut into their XBox time or choom supply.

My brother is a prime example. He has training as an electrician but has been laid off for over a year. His union isn't doing balls for him, he refuses to look for side work, and he bitches about the corporations and Bush becuase his benefits are about to run out. His wife is about to leave him because she's tired of working 3 jobs, plus raising the kids and doing household chores while he sleeps until 6 PM (!) and goes to bed at 10 AM. He either plays Skyrim all night or sits on Facebook, parroting every nutty leftard meme that comes down the pike. My parents and I have long since given up trying to help him. Hell, he didn't move out of my parents' house until he was fucking 38. He's 42 now. And no, I'm not exaggerating. How many more of him are out there?

These idiots think "The Rich" are some amorphous pseudo-nation that hoards wealth like some legion of Scrooge McDucks, sitting on it like dragons on mounds of coin. They have no idea about what any of these things are or mean, how they work, or what those people do and how they live. And the punch line, of course, is that the people who live most like their mental images probably list among their heroes! I try to avoid 'eliminationist' thought, I really do, but to paraphrase? 87 My income has already been taxed once.

How anyone can be self-employed, like this person, and hold progressive redistributionist views baffles me. I think this commenter is either a conservative troll or a progressive who is suddenly realizing that the socialists want his money, too.

Read back to the comment about how if the homeowners want their homes protected, they'd better figure out a way to pay even more taxes--no matter if it means they can no longer afford their home.

The Democrat party is top to bottom full of these types of people--not just communists, beyond communists, the class of Pol Pot and Mao.

122 And the notion that money just "sits" there is so absolutely stupid and, at the same time, absolutely trusted as gospel to the left.

Money NEVER rests. It is always working. I may have $10k in my checking account. But that money isn't sitting there. 1) It's earning me interest*, 2) the bank has lent it out on a loan and it is earning the bank interest, 3) the home owner had paid it to the seller. That's at least three people it is working for at the same time it is "sitting" there.

Now, what in the wide, wide world of sports do these fucksticks think the corporations and millionaires are doing with their money?

Who do they do they think is buying GM stock?
Who do they think is buying the local school, fire, road bonds?

But, they have to have this myth that the money is just sitting there--it's a tidy conspiracy that excuses the JEF from failure.

*Except for the money I have in my IOLTA accounts, the state thinks it's fair that the interest earned on money I hold for clients can be confiscated to pay for indigent legal services.

Let's nationalize the police and fire departments to the Federal Level.

No, that's really an argument there... as though a one-size-fits-all solution has lowered costs and improved results for education; lets do it with EVERYTHING!  ... is even minimally rational.

I project higher costs, lower services, and no possibility of being able to even find someone to complain to who might have the authority to fix a problem (as with any bureaucracy.  But that's just me thinking the result from every time we've ever tried this in history might be repeated.

Clearly they know better.  Sure we're zero for...EVER but that just means we're due for one to actually work.

Here in CA, i've run into people who have made comments like "Who would have ever predicted a city going bankrupt?"  .. to which I say "uhh you've never listened to ANY of my rants?  JEEZUZ"

Its maddening.  Heart attack inducing madness.  These things are so predictable its childs play.  I've long said that some people don't UNDERSTAND math.  They see it as some abstract thing.  They cannot do simple arithmetic in their head, as they've all grown up with calculators.  Its like someone born deaf.. If they don't learn a language, they will be a stupid, empty shell and an automaton.  We think in our native language, so without language, we cannot understand anything other than basic needs.

Its the same with math.  If you never learn it, you cannot think it.  Numbers mean nothing to an entire generation.  It should scare everyone.  Obama the idiot is a person I KNOW doesn't understand numbers... So theres that

152 Too hilarious!  I have spent many a happy hour going through the threads on DU and would recommend it, HAZMAT suited up, of course.

The rest of us are too kind to kill them.

154 Anybody catch this DU gem of a comment?

"One thing we probably need is a television station akin to Fox news that tells OUR side of the story. Maybe that would be a way to reach people."

Bwahahahahaha!!!

Last time I was there, I burned out the logic board on my Fapometer, and I dare not risk visiting again until I get it repaired.

156 So, have any DUmmies done a survey of Scranton police, firefighters, and bureaucrats to see how many of them own their homes and possibly some real estate beyond that?

Might be a bit of an eye opener for them.

I like how one guy thinks the answer to our budget problems is to start locking up political prisoners (Grover Norquist) and siezing all their personal assets.

Yeah, that'll help. It's always awesome when governments start doing that.

Thanks for posting Laura.  Never been to the DU site, but it was worth it.  Absolute laugh riot, and at the same time very demoralizing that there are people in this country this consistently stupid.

The ringleader, or original poster, and a self-identified socialist was the most risible of the bunch.  As you summarized, every legitimate question of basic economics was turned away without comment.  These idiots will have their brave new world when the laws of basic arithmetic (to say nothing of economics and human nature) are struck down.

159 My income has already been taxed once. These are the most infuriating libtards out there; the ones who work and are fiscally conservative like this guy but keep electing democrats because they are unable to see the big picture. They think that since their business is small, they won't be in the crosshairs of the dependent class one day. So as long as the leeches of society target people who make marginally more than they do they are cool with it, even if they mostly share the same fiscal values as the more successful people. They haven't crossed the arbitrary income "threshold" that the democrat party has currently deemed "wealthy" so they are all on board with the entitlement culture. Fvck these people

166 Did we have police and fire protection 30 years ago?  Don't we have less police protection now?  Why should we pay more for police and fire now?

Having police and fire protection isn't the problem and they know it.  "Strawman" is a bit too substantial for their argument, maybe rotting-fungus man would be better.

169 + There's no more money! Oh noes!

* Sure there's money. It works like this:

Step 1: Raise taxes!

Step 2: ???

Step 3: Boom. Money.

See?

+ Maybe people  don't want their taxes raised.

* Those people are evil and greedy. And probably also millionaires with cats. Cat people suck. Tax them some more.

+ But what if they don't have money to tax?

* They're hiding it. I suggest rectal exams.

+ That's your solution to everything!

* Whatever works, brah.

176 Nothing But Thieves. We don't have enough money to construct a Great Social Project 900' statue of Bill Ayers? We'll just STEAL what we "need!" That'll fix the "economy." 177 156 I have always considered Obama to be completely innumerate. I don't think he has the slightest idea what a trillion dollars is. Every number I have ever heard him mention has been wrong no matter in what context he used it... My pet peeve is his constant refrain of "millionaires and billionaires", without any apparent realization that there is a factor of 1000 difference between them. I've lately begun hearing lib callers to talk radio shows using that phrase.

182 That commenter "mainer" in the second DU thread is a real hoot. She's apparently a businesswoman who has been frugal with her money all of her life and is now upset because the redistributionist policies she's supported and voted for all of her life are now coming after her pile of money.

Socialism is wonderful only when it's somebody else's money.
