Democrats Freaking Out That Right Is Interested in Wright
— Ace

Not just Reverend Wright, but this stunning new revelation that a close friend of Obama's -- and Michelle's benefactor in Chicago -- offered Wright $150,000 to remain silent in 2008.

Obviously this is newsworthy and relevant.

Which you can guess from the coordinated freak-out.

A Super-Pac is proposing a $10 million ad campaign highlighting the relationship between Obama and Wright.

So All The President's Men are trying to pressure Romney to disown the attack and stop it.

“Stunning! Will Mitt stand up, as [Sen.] John McCain did? Or allow the purveyors of slime to operate on his behalf?” claimed a 5.42 a.m. tweet from David Axelrod, the senior strategic at Obama’s campaign headquarters in Chicago.

...

The proposed advertising is a “hateful campaign being planned by GOP super PACs,” claimed Bill Burton, who runs a Democratic “super PAC” political action committee, dubbed Priorities USA Action, that is itself designed to run negative ads against Gov. Mitt Romney.

Burton’s tweet came at 5.58 a.m. — some 16 minutes after the alert from Axelrod, who has worked in Chicago politics for decades.

At 9.05 a.m., Brad Woodhouse, the spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, joined the hue and cry. “Unbelievable @MittRomney can’t do more on this Ricketts slime story than say he hasn’t read the story,” he said in reaction to a Washington Post report that Romney declined to comment.

At 9.32 a.m., Woodhouse followed up with another tweet, saying “If @MittRomney can’t clearly denounce the type of scum bag tactics planned by his allies as outlined by the NYT he’s not fit to lead.”

4 Very happy to hear the Romney campaign repudiate this. A very smart move. "I repudiate the effort by that PAC to promote an ad strategy of the nature they've described. I would like to see this campaign focus on the economy, on getting people back to work, on seeing rising incomes and growing prosperity -- particularly for those in the middle class of America. And I think what we've seen so far from the Obama campaign is a campaign of character assassination. I hope that isn't the course of this campaign. So in regards to that PAC, I repudiate what they're thinking about ... It's interesting that we're talking about some Republican PAC that wants to go after the president [on Wright]; I hope people also are looking at what he's doing, and saying 'why is he running an attack campaign? Why isn't he talking about his record?'" So says the next President. Here's the link: http://tinyurl.com/7zfhomf

The latter would be fine: "Hey, that's not my campaign, I can't control what they do, you'll never see an add like that from my campaign or my PAC."

The former is bad because it indicates that Romney actively disapproves of the tactic.

As for me, if I were the candidate (reason I've-lost-count why I never will be), my response would be, "Certainly I think it's germane to the campaign if our current President is the kind of person who will bribe people for their silence.  What, exactly, was he offering to pay Reverend Wright to conceal?"

To try to demonize Obama as a black militant or whatever after ppl have seen him in the WH for three plus years seems a waste pf time. 100

Exactly.   Here we have one confidant of the President (Wright) saying that another confidant of the President (Whitaker) offered him $150,000 during the 2008 campaign at a time when the relationship with Wright was threatening to sink Obama's campain.   Is that not news?

Imagine if, say, it had come out that someone in the Romney camp had attempted to bribe his closest confidant in the Mormon Church to shut up about... well, what?   In fact, you can't imagine it, because you can't imagine anything in Romney's background that would be anywhere near as shocking as Obama's relationship with Wright... or Ayers... or Frank Marshall Davis.

The double standard is not a matter of media bias about newsworthiness.   It's that no one wants to say that Obama's background is really really weird, when it's not appalling or frightening.

In other words, the double standard is not that stories about Obama and Romney's past aren't treated the same.   It's that they're not treated as being wildly different in kind.

177 From the article at The Blaze:

The audio clips appear to showcase a man — despite his intense rhetoric — who seems genuinely saddened by his deteriorated relationship with Obama. Wright, contrary to past videos and speeches, seems calm and collected as he recounts his personal experiences over the past few years.

“It wasn’t what I expected to tell you the truth because the guy who I met did not look like the guy on the videotapes,” Klein told Hannity of his time with Wright. “He was very quiet, very polite, very measured, and talked about his academic credentials, very proud of the fact that he had a Ph.D., and answered all my questions…there was no sense that this guy could go off the deep end.”

227 If theres corruption via some bribery thing, which is new, then pursue that (via pacs), but you need evidence, not innuendo.

We don't have "innuendo."  We have a direct accusation from the alleged target of the bribe.  From what I'm reading: In writing, and kept by said target of bribery.  That's more than enough to get a Federal investigation started against any State or City politician- it should be more than enough to get one started against the President.

But, in addition to "they offered me a bribe," you need (in the minds of the 'Independents') a motive: what was the bribe about.

This makes the story both about the corruption and about what went on in Trinity United and what Obama really believes.

In a separate portion of the discussion, Wright talked about a cardboard box that holds some intriguing contents. In it, there are numerous articles and elements related to the Obama campaign and the drama that accompanied it.

One example Wright shared is an article in which David Axelrod, a key figure in the Obama camp, is quoted. The article apparently discusses how Axelrod interacted with the Rev. Figuring out how the Obamas could stay at the house of worship, while trying to distance the church from Wright.

I’m disappointed that no one on the right is pointing out this latest Wright/Obama flap isn’t about Obama’s religion at all — it’s about his CORRUPTION!

Obama tried to strong-arm Wright, and an Obama associate tried to bribe Wright to stay out of the lime-light. Pointing that out is not picking on his religious beliefs. ItÂ’s illustrative of how Obama operates, and should be fair game in an election.

Pound on that, never let up, point it out. Please.

So in regards to that PAC, I repudiate what they’re thinking about … It’s interesting that we’re talking about some Republican PAC that wants to go after the president [on Wright]; I hope people also are looking at what he’s doing, and saying ‘why is he running an attack campaign? 373 From the article at Breitbart:

Breitbart News has obtained a promotional booklet produced in 1991 by Barack Obama's then-literary agency, Acton & Dystel, which touts Obama as "born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii."

The booklet, which was distributed to "business colleagues" in the publishing industry, includes a brief biography of Obama among the biographies of eighty-nine other authors represented by Acton & Dystel.

It also promotes Obama's anticipated first book, Journeys in Black and White--which Obama abandoned, later publishing Dreams from My Father instead.

1. It is about the economy and we're not stupid.  I think Romney's team believes all the cloak and dagger stuff isn't a winner.  By denouncing this, he remains the adult in the room.
2. It is a totally safe move to denounce it because by law, Romney MAY NOT coordinate in any way with a PAC.  So he can denounce and the PAC does it anyway.  He wins twice.

The fact that Obama's Handlers are suggesting Romney step in an stop this PAC are suggesting he break election law.

I have had it hit 3 pine trees in my yard and come down and jump to the house.  I finally cut down every pine tree in the yard.

452 I have had it hit 3 pine trees in my yard and come down and jump to the house. I finally cut down every pine tree in the yard.

That soft wood is like a lightning rod. I don't have any in my yard but the neighbors across the street cut down five that were about 50'-70' high. They had been hit several times but it never killed them, just left them scarred.

454 Romney should deny the bribe offer occurred.  If the press questions him on the controversy, he should say: "The president's good friend, Eric Whitaker, did not offer $150,000 in hush money to Rev. Wright. It's just ridiculous to think that could occur and these distractions are doing nothing to lessen the economic ills this country faces." then segue into jobs/Obama sucks, etc.

460 The SCOAMF's team can't control the narrative anymore.

Not only can't they control it, the incoming rounds are so closely spaced, they can't even match pace and tread water...

If they stop the self-inflicted wounds, that situation may change though.

I still think there's internal sabotage going on.

Its grounded in several places. problem is sandy soil.  And even with a lightening rod and house protection, that doesn't stop the surges in the ac and cable when it strikes it somewhere out on the line. And that is where 99% of my problem has come from.

485 if Romney needs a better response, recall this: in around Jan 1999 James Carville was on Meet the Press, pointed his finger at Tim Russert and said, "Tim, I'm tellin` you, the friends of the president are declain` war on this special prosecutor".
And when Clinton was asked if he'd like to tell Carville to not talk like that, Clinton just grinned and said that he couldn't tell Carville what he could or couldn't say, he has a right to his opinion, etc.

491 The Romney crowd should leak plans to spend $50 million talking about Rev Wright.  Democrats and the media will spend time denouncing it -- and talking about it -- that Republicans won't need to do anything more.
