Democrats Starting To Realize They Might Lose The Medicare Argument?
— Ace

Restoring the money cut from Medicare, for ObamaCare, back to Medicare.

This is how they'll win -- if they do win.

In the last few days, the Romney campaign has moved to dramatically change the terrain of Medicare politics, and it looks like the Democrats are beginning to realize how vulnerable they might be. Because of Obamacare, it is the Democrats who now plan to cut current seniorsÂ’ benefits (especially those in Medicare Advantage) and access to care (thanks to the IPAB) while still failing to avert the programÂ’s (and the nationÂ’s) fiscal collapse, and because Romney would repeal Obamacare and pursue a version of the Ryan-Wyden premium-support reform it is the Republicans who would protect current seniorsÂ’ benefits and make them available to future seniors while saving the program from collapse through market reforms. Through the candidatesÂ’ statements this week and through this new ad, Romney and Ryan have made clear theyÂ’re going to inform voters about this and force the Democrats to defend themselves on Medicare.

That wonÂ’t be easy for the Left, since the Romney campaignÂ’s charges are true, and it is beginning to become apparent that the Democrats are totally unprepared for the coming fight. Their defenses so far fall into roughly three categories: Ryan did it too, the Obamacare Medicare cuts arenÂ’t very serious, and finally what can only be called frantic distractions. Even as pure demagoguery (let alone as efforts at actual substantive arguments) all three are exceptionally weak defenses, and suggest the Democrats could be in serious trouble. LetÂ’s examine each one.

The “Ryan did it too” defense is perhaps the most amusing of the three, as it succeeds in being simultaneously untrue, irrelevant, and an admission of the basic charge against the Democrats. Even as they call Paul Ryan a cruel and merciless budget cutter who cares not for the weather service and would gladly see children exposed to E. coli, the Democrats justify their taking $710 billion out of Medicare and spending it on Obamacare over the next decade by pointing out that Paul Ryan didn’t put that money back into Medicare in his budget. So if he had, would that have made their cuts unjustifiable? Well it so happens that he did. By repealing all of Obamacare’s spending, the Republican budget does not spend the money Obamacare took out of Medicare and thus those funds are used to extend the Medicare trust fund. And this point is hardly hidden in the Ryan budget. The budget document spells it out in its spending tables and also explains it in its narrative section, noting on page 54 that:

This budget ends the raid on the Medicare trust fund that began with passage of the new health care law last year. It ensures that any potential savings in current law would go to shore up Medicare, not to pay for new entitlements. In addition to repealing the health care lawÂ’s new rationing board and its unfunded long-term care entitlement, this budget stabilizes plan choices for current seniors.

Rather than keeping their heads down and avoiding Medicare as an issue, they intend to run on it.

Interesting. Let's see that Romney ad again:

Their plan, I think, is this: Seniors might accept that Medicare must be reformed in order to extend the solvency of Medicare, to keep the system functioning.

But seniors may not be keen on simply taking $710 billion of the benefits they paid for their whole lives and giving them to people who did not pay for such benefits.

If you're in economic difficulties, you may be willing to cut back on your own spending so that one day you'll emerge from debt.

But what you might not agree to is devoting a large portion of your income to supporting other people.

Forty-three percent of nonvoters are Obama supporters, the survey found, while 20 percent of the nonvoters support Romney, 18 percent back a third-party candidate and 15 percent are undecided.

“This poll is a good news-bad news story for Barack Obama,” poll director David Paleologos said in a statement. “The good news is that there is a treasure chest of voters he doesn’t even have to persuade — they already like him and dislike Mitt Romney. He just needs to unlock the chest and get them out to vote. The bad news is that these people won’t vote because they feel beaten down by empty promises, a bad economy and the negativity of both parties. Obama has lost time — and the key — to open that treasure chest.”

The reason why it won't work is because the average person already has it in their heads that the GOP wants to destroy these programs and the Dems want to preserve them. So no matter what Romney says, people are going to instinctively side with the Dems for the simple reason that the Dems are always more pro-handout historically.

This is sort of like John Kerry slamming Bush for being too soft on terrorism, whatever he would say would be dismissed as untrue simply because the public had no doubt, based on past actions, that Bush and the Republicans were tough on terrorism.

86 Republicans won the special election in NV-02 on Medicare and the Ryan plan by coupling the democrats to lying about it to cover up their own raising of $716 Billion to pay for Obamacare.

Fight to a draw and we win 2012; fight to win and we change the politic forever.

ObamaÂ’s lawless bypass of Congress in granting blanket amnesty to millions of illegal aliens began this morning across America.

Tens of thousands of illegals lined up early, and flooded into DHS centers to apply for nearly automatic 2-year stays from deportation and work permits, with far looser provisions and requirements than were ever imagined in any version of the 3-times defeated ‘Dream Act’ in Congress.

You know, I didn't care for the idea of Ryan as a VP pick, beforehand, just because of his lack of executive experience, and how he's in the relatively humble House, and not even the Senate.

But now that he's the pick, I find myself being downright excited about it. It has made this election all about being grown-ups about our national finances, and has provided the ticket with a spokesman who is not only charismatic (in every way), but who really, really knows his shit - inside and out. He complements Romney's complete lack of experience within the Federal government. He is one of the few people who has publically and officially (and respectfully) lectured Obama like the little boy that he (Obama) is. He garners respect from both sides of the aisle (and there may actually be Democrats left who are privately freaked out about this train that's headed straight for the river crossing, where the bridge was never completed.

In short, the guy is AWESOME!!

A law enforcement official has identified the suspect arrested in Wednesday's shooting as Floyd Corkins II of Herndon, Va. Investigators were interviewing his neighbors.

Another official says the shooter made a negative reference about the work of the Family Research Council before opening fire. The officials spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.

David Mariner is executive director of The DC Center for the LGBT Community. He says Corkins had been volunteering at the center for about the past 6 months. Mariner describes Corkins as "kind, gentle and unassuming."

176 CLK said: "The reason why it won't work is because the average personalready has it in their headsthat the GOP wants to destroy these programs and the Dems want to preserve them."

That's true but it's not a deal breaker, again using NV-02 as a case study where the NRCC knew it would be attacked on Ryan Plan and used it as a testing ground:

There's a built in Democratic advantage on medicare. The Republican, Amodei's Fav/Unfav among 55+ was 28% fav, 19% unfav.

So, they liked him as a person, but just because of the de facto Medicare hit that you get for having an 'R' after your name, when asked who would protect Medicare for Seniors:

The age 56+ demo stated:
-- Amodei (R) 18%, Democrat 46%.

Among everyone:
--Amodei (R) 26%, Democrat 39%

They then attacked the democrat's Ryan Plan attack by calling her a liar who is trying to cover up her own raiding of Medicare by $500 Billion dollars to fund Obamacare (which polls horribly). They used the elderly and his mother as verifiers that he's not an evil cunt (Ryan and Romney already are non-threatening).  Attacked hard that only one person cut Medicare -- the democrat -- to fund Obamacare and then pivoted to the economy.

Obamacare is so toxic, it kills everything it touches.

Results:

The age 56+ demo stated:
-- Amodei (R) 43%, Democrat 36%.
NET movement of [-28] --> [+7]

Among everyone:
--Amodei (R) 41%, Democrat 33%
NET movement of [-13] --> [+8]

The take-away is that if Romney is aggressive and we fight this to even close to a draw, we win. Pivot to the economy, debt and jobs and it's match.

NB: Data taken from a NRCC presentation.

The reason that ACA took the money out of Medicare was for the CBO scoring. It was a total propaganda move, and it was a lie.  They did this to make it look like they were "bending the cost curve" to create this new bureaucracy and the state exchanges (which would hire more government employees that are part of AFSCME or SEIU) and fewer private employees working for those evil insurance companies would have jobs. This is part of the long-term Democrat strategy to make more people "permanent" Democrat voters, regardless of what the effects are on the economy.

They all promised "the doc fix" where at some unspecified future time the money would be put back into Medicare.  So now the way the Democrats structured ACA is turning around to bite them, because Ryan and Romney are willing to fight them on this and campaign on this point. So , so sad for Barack the Liar.

And don't think that the over-65 crowd doesn't get it. They all pay very close attention to what the government is doing to various parts of Medicare.  Medicare Advantage, which was a partially subsidized (depending on your personal wealth) program for buying bridge health insurance to help cover costs, was a very popular program with Seniors that had some money saved, which is a not insignificant number of the over-65 crowd.

Those people were/are plenty pissed that ACA (Obamacare) was taking Medicare Advantage away.  And they vote.

Obama and the Democrats cut over half a Trillion dollars from Medicare and put it in Obamacare to pay for uninsured "Americans" -- tens of millions of whom are not Americans at all.  Millions of the uninsured  in this country are illegal aliens -- or "dreamers" as Obama is now calling them.  Cutting Medicare spending and putting the money into more taxpayer-financed health insurance for Third World illegal aliens is part of Barry's wealth re-distribution scheme, to make the world that the evil white man rules more "fair."

BTW, more than 12,000 illegal aliens showed up today in Chicago at a single free legal clinic for illegal aliens who want help applying for Barry's new Amnesty-by-imperial-executive-fiat plan.  Twelve thousand illegal aliens, in one section of one city.  Nobody knows how many illegal aliens will be applying for Barry's Imperial amnesty -- and there are no limits on how many can receive it.

Think ICE is going to have any time to deal with deporting foreign criminals when they have millions of amnesty applications to process?  Think Obama's administration is going to put a priority on getting rid of foreign criminals, or giving amnesty to millions of new Obama voters?

Meanwhile, Congress does nothing while Obama refuses to enforce existing law and issues his imperial decrees in violation of both his oath of office and the U.S. Constitution.

actually, you might have it backwards. An auto mechanic or plumber is likely to understand that the longer you wait to fix the problem, the more expensive it becomes to fix. A Liberal, on the other hand, is more likely to say that we just need to make the rich pay a little more and eliminate fraud, and then things will be solid for the next 20 years (which after 5 years turns out to be only 10 years, and the next fix is more expensive that the previous one.)

305 If this was an intentional trap, then it was very well played by the Romney camp.  My parents, in their 60's and just recently on Medicare (dad with Parkinsons and mom a recent knee replacement and bout with breast cancer) love Paul Ryan, because they love their grandkids and want to see them provided for.  They actually seem embarrassed that the "no changes under 55" would not affect them, but would affect my wife and I, who are in our 40's.  If Romney explains loud enough that the changes would only affect those under 55, and THEN that those changes would be optional...a choice as I currently understand the plan...there is no there there for the typical Dem line of attack.  The 40-55 group is the group that would be affected the most, as those are the prime earning years that fall within the changes, and as a part of that group I think we understand that a belt-tightening needs to occur, and the sooner the better.

You misunderstand the nature of intelligence. I have a friend whose IQ rocks the scale, a guy who conceptualizes telecommunications networks for a living. You know that cloud that shows up on network diagrams? He's the guy who sees behind the cloud. He's a Mensa guy but solid and grounded and not a snob. Anyway, I asked him once if he sometimes feels a certain amount of impatience dealing with, well, people like me who are not Mensa guys. His reply? 'Intellect is not wisdom.'

Most people, wherever their place on the intellectual spectrum, can grasp the basics of just about any given argument if the premises and conclusions are clearly defined. 'Average' does not mean what you seem to think it means.

It's a fair point worth keeping in mind. Liberals are focused on feelings the most, but the middle ground where the battle is won or lost has a mix of people of various sensibilities.

But people who have NEVER concerned themselves with politics before can just tell that something is just not right, and are waking up. To me, I look at the commercials - which try to be non-partisan - and see that they casually throw out phrases like "these days", and "especially in this economy." You don't have to pay much attention to see that things were cooking along decently for most of the Bush administration, and that things are bad now, and aren't getting any better. Some may even notice that Obama has blamed Bush for "the mess", but then signed off on extending Bush's tax cuts - to help the economy!

But this is why it's so important, IMHO, that Obama's own words be used - in full context - to show (1) that he's a big-time liar (2) that he thinks everything is going great, and all he cares about is creating government jobs - for his cronies - that will bloat the budget deficit even further and (3) that his way of looking at things is profoundly anti-American. It might not hurt to show what a narcissist the bastard is, too.

327 I would think the Dems might try to restore the $710 billion to Medicare before the election since it is the only play open to them.  Obama can throw Pelosi under the bus by saying it was her idea to cut Medicare in order to get Obamacare passed and of course Obama would be glad to spend another trillion or so.  That would force the Republicans to vote against restoring the funds and take the issue away.

The counter is to condition the restoration of funding on the repeal in whole of Obamacare so that the Dems are forced to choose their poison.  You could sell that to the American people as well since Obamacare is unpopular as hell and it can be seriously argued that we can't afford both.  Well, we can't afford either but the country isn't ready for the whole truth all at once.

Eventually everything Obama passed while in office will have to be repealed.  Ozymandias' reign will be considered well documented compared to Teh Won.  The only reminder we will have will be the debt.  That is forever.

They can't for the same reason the 710 billion was in Obamacare in the first place:  Pay-Go.  To restore the money they would have to raise taxes now.  And they can't go into October whipping congress critters into line to support a new tax hike, because they would lose the vote.

337 352 CC,

Add in that going back to the floor to give the emergency fix does what?

Suddenly the Searchlight Stalker gets reminded repeatedly that shit like this is why we have budgeting you allegedly Pederastic dickhead.......why haven't you passed a budget in 4 fucking years Harry?

Hell let McCain do it.....he is pissed Mitt is making this look so easy he'll kick Harry in the nuts......

the GOP runs out the clock and promises to put the 716 billion back by instantly repealing Obamacare and restoring the status quo ante....

what the democrats keep forgetting is that unlike Obamacare Ryan's plan is a stalking horse it is NOT LAW!

so they say "but you violated the Ryan plan!" the GOP says, "look dumbasses we walked granny back from the cliff we'll deal with your bullshit in a sec!"

Get it?

They got nothing

338 Romney's campaign team is smart, guys. MediScare was supposed to be the GOP's Achilles' heel in 2012, but Romney/Ryan is using some political jujutsu to turn the issue into Obama's biggest weakness. Brilliant.

As long as they keep pounding away on the message: Obama = $716 Billion in Medicare cuts to pay for Obamacare, we fight this to a draw or win.

They can't let up though; we've found our schwerpunkt and we need to keep on saturating it with fire and push thru until the fronts wide open, then we can pivot away and it's back to maneuver warfare on the economy, jobs and the debt where we dominate.

The problem we always have is we think we got it and slow the pace down, waiting to see the data feed back in to us and we provide an opening for the other guy to counter.

Obama campaign is squirming, and not sure how to respond. You can tell by the crap they're pushing out to surrogates in the usual places on TV, politico and that cock-muncher Greg Sergent. Until they get focus group data and, really, solid polling -- they don't yet realize the new world they're in.
