They fell with their faces to the foe.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

The muffled drum's sad roll has beat
The soldier's last tattoo;
No more on Life's parade shall meet
That brave and fallen few.
On fame's eternal camping ground
Their silent tents to spread,
And glory guards, with solemn round
The bivouac of the dead.

I read this on WZ a while back. I did not know these extraordinary young men. I wish I had. But I'm thinking about them today, and I will never, ever forget them, or their courage.
From Maj. Gen. John Kelly's speech (four days after his own son was killed in the military):
Two Marines, Corporal Jonathan Yale and Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter, 22 and 20 years old, respectively, assumed the watch together at the entrance gate of an outpost that contained a makeshift barracks housing 50 Marines and 100 Iraqi police.
We saw the last six seconds of their lives on the security camera:
... the truck came into their view at the far end of the alley; 60-70 yards away. Exactly no time to talk it over or call the sergeant to ask what they should do. Only enough time to take half an instant and think about what the sergeant told them only a few minutes before, "Let no unauthorized personnel or vehicles pass." The two Marines had five seconds to live.
It took maybe another two seconds for them to present their weapons, take aim and open up. By this time the truck was halfway through the barriers and gaining speed. The recording shows a number of Iraqi police, some of whom had fired their AKs, now scattering — some running right past the Marines. They had three seconds to live.
For two seconds more, the recording shows the Marines firing non-stop; the truck's windshield exploding into shards of glass as their rounds take it apart and tore into the son-of-a-bitch who is trying to get past them to kill their brothers — American and Iraqi — bedded down in the barracks, totally unaware that their lives depended entirely on two Marines standing their ground. If they had been aware, they would have known they were safe because two Marines stood between them and a crazed suicide bomber.
The recording shows the truck careening to a stop immediately in front of the two Marines. In all the instantaneous violence, Yale and Haerter never hesitated. By the recording, they never stepped back. They never even started to step aside. They never even shifted their weight. With their feet spread shoulder-width apart, they leaned into the danger, firing as fast as they could work their weapons. They had only one second left to live.
The truck stopped just short of the two and detonated, killing them both catastrophically. Twenty-four brick houses were damaged or destroyed. A mosque 100 yards away collapsed. The truck's engine came to rest two hundred yards away knocking most of a house down before it stopped.
The truck explodes. The camera goes blank. Two young men go to their God. Six seconds. Not enough time to think about their families, their country, their flag, about their lives or their deaths, but more than enough time for two very brave young men to do their duty into eternity. That is the kind of people who are on watch all over the world tonight — for you.
These two young Marines lived life by "Honor — Courage — Commitment" right to the last second. It's not how they died, but rather how they lived. Let's raise a glass to Yale and Haerter, and to their fellow Marines, soldiers, sailors and airmen standing watch for you this Christmas season and Christmas seasons to come. Semper Fi.

I see your point, and NO PROBLEM with it (hey, I'm BBQing this extended weekend myself), but I also know we need to be reminded that this stuff is serious...we are a nation at risk, a country that is suffering the deadly poison of socialist policies and may be on the brink of collapse, civil war or the end of our great union.
And yet, heroes like my grandfather (see my post above) and so many other soldiers, sailors and airmen before and after him, still go out and risk their lives for the great notion that this country, above all others, is the one beacon of hope and freedom for billions and worth dying for. I therefore don't mind spending 0.8% of my year talking about the the honored dead.

>>the best example of satirical representations of our culture that's come along in a very long time.
A tourist walked into a Chinese curio shop in San Francisco . While looking around at the exotic merchandise, he noticed a very lifelike, life-sized, bronze statue of a rat. It had no price tag, but was so incredibly striking the tourist decided he must have it. He took it to the old shop owner and asked, "How much for the bronze rat?"
"Ahhh, you have chosen wisely! It is $12 for the rat, $100 for the story." said the old Chinaman.
The tourist quickly pulled out twelve dollars. "I'll just take the rat, you can keep the story."
As he walked down the street carrying his bronze rat, the tourist noticed that a few real rats had crawled out of the alleys and sewers and had begun following him down the street. This was a bit disconcerting so he began walking faster.
A couple blocks later he looked behind him and saw to his horror the herd of rats behind him had grown to hundreds, and they began squealing.
Sweating now, the tourist began to trot toward the Bay. Again, after a couple blocks, he looked around only to discover that the rats now numbered in the MILLIONS, and were squealing and coming toward him faster and faster.
Terrified, he ran to the edge of the Bay and threw the bronze rat as far as he could into the Bay. Amazingly, the millions of rats all jumped into the Bay after the bronze rat, and were all drowned.
The man walked back to the curio shop in Chinatown . "Ahhh," said the owner, "You have come back for story?"
"No, sir," said the man "I came back to see if you have a bronze Democrat."

A bit of History.
Originally known as Decoration Day until 1882, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance of AmericaÂ’s war-fighters who died in the service of our nation. The origin of the day is uncertain but it most likely started with Southern Ladies decorating the graves of fallen Confederate soldiersÂ’ graves during the Civil War or the random organization of groups to honor the dead in several locations around the nation on both sides of the War. The Civil War tapped the need of decent people to honor their sideÂ’s dead as well as their loved ones who had fallen for their cause.
The first official proclamation establishing the day was from General John Logan on May 5th, 1868 and was first observed on May 30, of that year, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The Northern states were the first to observe Memorial day on the last of Monday of May, Southern States honored their dead on separate days until the end of World War I. After the Great War, Memorial Day changed from a day to honor the fallen warriors of the Civil War to one of remembrance of all Americans who died fighting for our nation.
The placing of American Flags on the graves began with the Boy Scouts at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in 1951. Later the 3rd U.S. Infantry would place flags on the graves of the fallen at Arlington and maintain a constant vigilance to ensure the flags never falter. Nationally, American Flags will be raised and flown at half-mast till noon (10 minutes!) in remembrance and raised to full mast for the remainder of the day.
Traditional observance has diminished somewhat over the years, far too many Americans have become complacent about remembering what made us and kept us free. Many of the graves of the fallen are being ignored and most people donÂ’t know the meaning of the flag being flown at half-mast. Outside of many military communities the fallen are forgotten till the war-fighters are needed to fend off another threat to our nation. Soon after, however, people forget our war dead once again.
Too many AmericanÂ’s take Memorial Day for granted as another day off. Like Christmas, Passover and Easter the true meaning may be forgotten because it is not being taught to our children by our generation.
For those who know and observe this day of remembrance may God bless you and keep you close.

Rolling Thunder, as per their practice, was there.
Though it was winter, the service was outside. I noticed a couple of the bikers talking and one gesturing out toward the parking lot and then they took off at a brisk walk. A few more of them followed behind,
What they had seen was a van load of fucking assholes with signs who had the very fucking mistaken idea that they could just come and act like fucking idiots.
I couldn't hear what they were saying, but one of the douchebags started jawing at the RT guys, when one of the bikers grabbed the dick by the front of his jacket, brought him nose-to-nose and said something that I'm sure wasn't "Hi, glad you're here" and then threw him straight back into the open van side door.
The rest just put their tails between their legs and climbed back in and took off.

Don't even bother with it. Let it wallow in his self-loathing and hate. It just wants attention.

Her story and strength are heartbreaking and amazing. I remember people lining the roads here from the airport to the funeral home in Richmond Hill paying tribute.
Take a few minutes to watch.

Luckily, Obama has that covered by outing SEALs for his Hollyweird premier.

Isn't it? I try to imagine how I'd handle The Worst News Ever, and I can't (and don't want to). Lisa Freeman is amazing, as was her boy. Matthew volunteered for A-Stan duty as did our son. When I asked D'oh Boy why he volunteered to go, he said, "Because I'm a Marine. That's what I'm trained to do."

128 spoken like a true traitor . I worked as an observer for Gathering of Eagles at an anti war protest in DC,2007. One protestor dressed in military fatigues wheeled a flag covered casket to the capitol building spouting epitaths similar to what you posted. When the DC police asked for my account of his ass whooping by a Gold Star Dad I lied in favor of the GSD. Have a nice day!!

Your ignorance of what that piece of scripture means is staggering. The fact that you attempt to cheapen it with that garbage is typical. How's it feel to wake up every day and know you're a loser?

Now you're talking!
Grilling is cooking over gas or charcoal. Charcoal is better.
BBQ is an art involving the correct combination of seasoning, choice of wood for smoking, temperature and time.
Most people don't have the right equipment. I don't either but someday I hope to build a brick pit.
I was taught that the ideal temp for BBQ is 210. 18 hours for brisket and pork shoulder, 10-12 hours for baby back ribs, 8 hours for whole chicken.
I prefer shagbark hickory for smoke but some people swear by fruitwood like apple and peach and some even like oak (yuck).
Rub is usually paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper.
Some people say that if you need sauce then the BBQ must not be that good but I do like a good sauce dripping onto my shirt when I'm eating.

Taking Chance was/is well worth watching.
God bless all those who served, are serving, and have yet to serve! How blessed are we to live in a country with such men and women. Remember our troops in your prayers.

I'm trying to find the @ 10 min. video taken from inside the hearse carrying the body of a Fallen Hero.
It shows thousands of people lining the streets to pay their respects.
It is the most moving video and should definitely be posted every Memorial Day because it is a great example of why America is Great. From the sacrifice our Heroes make, to the love and respect we have for our Heroes.
I posted it at Weasel Zippers a few years ago, but even going that route through Google, I couldn't find it.
It was also posted at Nice Deb's and MM's.

Nope. But it is similar. The one I'm talking about seems to be recorded because they couldn't believe the amount of people that stopped to show their respect.
