Did We Need a Judge Dredd Reboot? Apparently Some Thought We Did.
— Ace

Well, science fiction, dystopia, and guns. I guess I'll see it.

Again, I mean.

Trailer below. The initial tones you hear sound a lot like Vangelis' score for Blade Runner, which shouldn't be a concern, because plainly the entire project is derivative anyway.

Starring McCoy from Star Trek and Queen Cersie from Game of Thrones.

If it doesn't have Armand Assante, then I'm not interested.

I liked the original. It wasn't anything great, but it wasn't awful.

Not sure why a remake was needed. It looks like the entire movie will involve two judges trying to get through a building to an end boss.  That sounds more like a level of a video game than a movie.

Unfinished projects often use "borrowed" soundtracks in the trailers.  They have to put something in there, and it has to be something they don't have to pay and arm and a leg to use.

The actual movie will have its own soundtrack, no doubt something significantly less melodic than Vangelis' stuff.

1) I maintain that "The Fifth Element" was the last original SciFi movie. Either I haven't seen it or there really hasn't been one since.

2) Alan Dean Foster has written what I think have been some pretty good SciFi. If you haven't read it, his "The Damned" series is pretty cool. The bad guys are communists-like mind controlers, while the good aliens are capitalists. The humans are killing machines in a good way.

59 no interest in this, so I'll change the subject:

For the first 10 years of our marriage, Barack and I lived in an apartment in my hometown of Chicago.

The winters there can be pretty harsh, but no matter how snowy or icy it got, Barack would head out into the cold -- shovel in hand -- to dig my car out before I went to work.

In all our years of marriage, he's always looked out for me. Now, I see that same commitment every day to you and to this country.

The only way we'll win this election is if we can rely on one another like that, all the way to November 6th. Barack is working hard, but he can't do this alone -- he needs your help.

How about a DIY series on interior decorating hosted by Aquaman?

I suppose that'd have to be teh Green Lantern, now that he's all ghey and stuff.

124 This will in fact be WORSE than the Stallone film, because that film at least did not take itself seriously. After all, it had Rob Schneider in it. This film however, just looks bad. As in direct to mail order video sci-fi bad.

125
The original had one funny bit, an advertising 'droid that rolled around the streets chanting, "Eat Recycled Food! It's Great for the Environment, and It's OK for You!"

Oh, Stallone puffing out his changing and shouting, "I! AM! THE LAW!" was pretty amusing too.

Dare I hope that the reboot will have even that much humor?

Posted by: Brown Line at June 21, 2012 01:21 PM (t0FeC)

126 I like this trend! What we NEED is lots of these Hollywood types to become pretty much destitute. " Will direct for food", would look awesome on a piece of cardboard!

Posted by: cheetah at June 21, 2012 01:25 PM (zXhtZ)

131 C'mon, it's Judge Dredd, more or less the 2000 AD version from UK comicdom.

Don't let the Sylvester Stallone clusterf*ck with Rob Schneider fool you. It's never going to win awards, but this is Dredd as he was meant to be. Plus, you can't go wrong with this: "I AM THE LAW!"

Posted by: Jason B at June 21, 2012 01:26 PM (m2kcG)

132 And it looks like they ripped the plot off from Robocop 2.

135 I will wait for the "user reviews." I see the potential for decent or awful. It could be either one.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at June 21, 2012 02:18 PM (bxiXv)

137 "1) I maintain that "The Fifth Element" was the last original SciFi movie. Either I haven't seen it or there really hasn't been one since." Moon was pretty good. Not as good as the 5th element but worth a watch. ;-)

Posted by: lowfibass at June 21, 2012 02:26 PM (26gsI)

138 At least it doesn't look totally campy like Stallone's was.

And the lead actor probably didn't have to do the entire shoot standing on a box to be taller than his female costar.

So it's got two things going for it.

Posted by: Dodd at June 21, 2012 02:30 PM (7KDDM)

139 Yeah, i second Moon, it's basically a one man movie, kind of amazing really.

140 here's another opportunity for some fun: http://tinyurl.com/6vmhzxx

Posted by: mallfly at June 21, 2012 03:28 PM (bJm7W)

141 In the original Judge Dredd movie we had 1.) Armande Asante not acting much like Rico at all and not looking like Sylvester Stallone, and 2.) Stallone taking the helmet off thus proving he was not in any way shape or form remotely anything like Dredd. If Karl Urban doesn't take the helmet off in the film then he understands what he is doing.

Posted by: Cackfinger at June 21, 2012 03:33 PM (CCHli)

142 To all saying this looks like a video game, you've got it backwards. Video games for decades have been emulating Judge Dredd. Especially those developed in the UK and Europe where the character has a far bigger presence.

A lot of Americans don't realize this character has been published continuously for almost 30 years, usually in at least three place each month: two bi-weekly issues of 2000 AD and Judge Dredd magazine. As of this week 2000 AD is on issue #1787. Started in the late 70s and Dredd started in the early 80s, putting him in almost 1500 issues of that publication alone. This compares pretty well to US characters that are decades older.

If you know Judge Dredd you've seen tons of material from it lifted wholesale for use in video games.

143 This really could be exceptionally great, if done right. The first movie had promise but was just awful. Seriously Stallone could do the part but that script sucked reasty rad testes.

144 #64

If that were true it would be a half-hour and all take place in a single room.

No, they're remaking the Schwarzenegger version, which almost nothing at all to do with 'We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.'

Posted by: epobirs at June 21, 2012 03:53 PM (kcfmt)

145 #20

Wrong actor. It's Clint Eastwood he's emulating. The character was actually created with Eastwood in mind.

Posted by: skinnydipinacid at June 21, 2012 07:37 PM (F7XAG)

150 @145 dredd was actually patterned with eastwood's dirty harry in mind. i will say this, urban has dredd's lower mouth features down pat: the stubble and the frown are iconic for the character, but the outfit itself... meh. the outfits in the stallone dredd film were way closer to the original comic. if they can get thru the whole film without dredd taking his helmet off once, i'll know that the producers are serious.

Posted by: hack at June 21, 2012 07:42 PM (q9dSr)

151 That's the one rule. He never takes off the helmet. Never. Ever.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at June 21, 2012 09:18 PM (r4wIV)

152 Yes, we did need a reboot.  The best thing about Stallone's version was Rob Schneider mocking Stallone's "I am the law".
