Donald "Duck" Dunn, RIP
— Dave in Texas

Died this morning in Tokyo, doing what he loved.

Perhaps his biggest hit with Booker T. and the MGs, "Green Onions." Straight 12-bar blues.

One of the best blues bass guys ever, a legend. He became extra famous after the first Blues Brothers movie, with the pipe and that big fro. His friend Steve ~~"Guitar"~~ "The Colonel" Cropper said this about Dunn,

Guitarist Steve Cropper, his best friend and bandmate in both the MG's and Blues Brothers said this on the band's facebook page, ""Today I lost my best friend, the World has lost the best guy and bass player to ever live."

Cropper doesn't know me so that stands.

RIP Donald. I learned a lot listening to you. Including that spastic head thing. Thanks.

Today? Forget it. All pop music has to be fronted by a young, inexperienced, ostentatious vocalist.
At least for the last, what, 20 years.
Today instrumental hits are practically non-existent, as are hits in time signatures other than 4/4.

But what gets me is Amazon charges more for downloaded albums than the CD. I refuse to pay that.

Vinyl? Clearly superior sounding as long as you have a record that is in good shape, a good stylus and platter, I suggest a tube preamp. Maybe a McIntosh. Some good speakers, I am partial to Tannoys.

Assuming you haven't damaged your hearing due to loudness, in which case, you can't tell the difference.

I think I heard about the resurgence of vinyl on the Wall Street Journal Report a couple weeks ago and they're not often wrong about trends.

It depends upon the sampling rate. It's like cartoons and your eye -- if it's fast enough it will be imperceptible. Unless you're truly gifted.

I have a cassette converter from Encore Technology that cost 40 bucks and came with a fairly sophisticated audio editor.

And by sophisticated, I mean that I'm not smart enough to use or even understand all the features.

True, CD quality is 44.100 khz. That is also standard for most mp3s.

HD audio is now at 196 khz. BUT, when they mix it down, it gets stepped on, and you guessed it, the product you buy is 44.1.

Come over my house and listen my vinyl copy of "Hot House Flowers" (W. Marsalis). I will toggle back and forth between that and the CD.

75 Years ago (summer of 2001) whilst road tripping the south (B'more to Memphis to White Sands to San Antonio, through the deep south and back up to B'more) my buddy and I got lost in rural Mississippi.

We saw a guy taking the trash cans to the side of the road, and asked for directions.

No kidding... it might have been Donald Dunn.

We were looking for the cenotaph of Robert Johnson. He had no clue where the Such-and-such Zion Church was, but the minute we mentioned Robert Johnson's headstone, he knew right what we were talking about.

Who knows. Looked and sounded just like him.

114 120. Vic, I have some i-tune MP3s on my computer that I downloaded from i-tunes before the last computer crash. Windows Media Player won't play them, but it will play MP3s downloaded from Amazon. Probably an Apple thing. I could get the most recent i-tunes program, but it is huge. Does all sorts of stuff I don't need or want.

You're going to have to be more specific. The original PC/XT hard drive was 10 megabytes. I was involved with some earlier DECmate machines that had 5 megabyte PC-class hard drives. The RK05s in my PDP-8/e (ca 1973 hardware) were 14" cartridges, each holding a megabyte and a half (six-bit bytes, mind you).

For smaller capacities, you're probably pushing back into the '60s.

I was that guy that waited a decade before buying a CD, and then it was a gift to an ex. I will admit to owning around 30 of them now but the last thing I bought was an Elvis compilation last year.

All of my old HiFi equipment still works. Crown IC150A pre-amp, D150A Amp, ESS Heil speakers, a Kenwood KD 2040 table with a Shure V15 cartridge and an HH Scott Type 314 FM Stereo reciever. Last time I checked, if I was to copy 1 alblum a day over to digital it would take the better part of 5 years, non-stop.
