Don't You Love It When Leftists Speak Their Minds?
— LauraW

It's always illuminating when these folks get comfortable and know they're alone with others of their stripe.

Herein, an EPA official discloses how abusing the power of the thug-state has salutary effects.

How to get compliance from the peasants?

“kind of like how the Romans used to conquer little villages in the Mediterranean: they’d go into little Turkish towns somewhere, they’d find the first five guys they’d run into, and they’d crucify them.”

Nice.

Video is from 2010, but it's new to me.
Thanks to Teresa.

2 Does this mean that the proper way to make the EPA back off is to assault the first five of their officers you can find?

Posted by: steevy at April 25, 2012 02:12 PM (7W3wI)

122 Also, this fucker is so stupid he only knows enough history to make him dangerous.
What he forgets is it was too many "examples" in too many towns that made the subjects hate Rome.
Nobody cared when Rome fell. And the blood of "administrators" like this guy ran in the streets.

Also, the subjects didn't have guns. Back then it took years of training and practice to equal a Roman soldier.
There's a bumper sticker: A man without a gun is a subject, a man with a gun is a citizen.

Posted by: jimmuy at April 25, 2012 02:12 PM (kSaUf)

123 And also, the Romans generally had better things to do than conquer little villages. They conquered city states and Empires. And they did a pretty good job of it. You know how they got their first foothold in modern turkey? The king deeded his entire kingdom (Perganum) to the Romans in his will. Not by going around killing random people that wouldn't live there for another millennium.

Then the rest of us fall in to line.

Oh, yeah, the Romans did this. If someone from a village killed a legionaire, or even so much as threw a rock at them, they would round up every villager and kill (usually by either crucifixion or strangulation) every 10th person.

That is where we get the word "decimate".

If these guys are such fans of the Romans, they ought to appreciate being offered  this:

Tom Hagen: When a plot against the Emperor failed... the plotters were always given a chance... to let their families keep their fortunes. Right?
Frank Pentangeli: Yeah, but only the rich guys, Tom. The little guys got knocked off and all their estates went to the Emperors. Unless they went home and killed themselves, then nothing happened. And the families... the families were taken care of.
Tom Hagen: That was a good break. A nice deal.
Frank Pentageli: Yeah... They went home... and sat in a hot bath... opened up their veins... and bled to death... and sometimes they had a little party before they did it.

EPA borrows tactics from the Romans

ROME FELL BECAUSE (several reasons pertinant cited)
--Uncontrollable thugish branches of the government
--Decay (Military was less powerful due to lax training/support)
--Inflation
--Economic woes
--Division (culturally/geographically)
--Hording and Deficit (Trade Deficit and Barbarians (thugish branches of the government, known for "keeping the peace"/enforcement of the government's wishes) were known for looting the treasury for their own whims)

I recently heard a former sheriff of Fairfax County speak to a conservative group on the subject of the EPA and other regulatory agencies rolling into towns to bully the local sheriffs.  In one case, they told a sheriff from a SW state to close down some of the roads to a national park.  He refused.  They said, "We'll arrest you."  He said, "I'll arrest you back, and I have a local militia of 200 citizens behind me."  They never bothered him again.

He had other examples of fed agencies trying to close down raw-milk farmers (Amish), where one sheriff capitulated and one didn't.  The one who refused still has the locals in the milk bidness.  The one who buckled actually had the barn knocked down.

If you're not sure where your local sheriff's constitutional kowledge lies, he recommends this book.  Sheriffs are elected officials and wield LOTS of local power.

231 h/t foxnation As states across the country are passing laws to restrict access to abortion, California lawmakers are considering a significant expansion of who would be able to perform the procedure in the state. Under a bill that passed its first committee hearing Tuesday, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives and physician assistants would be able to perform what is known as an "aspiration" abortion, which is the most common abortion procedure and takes place in the first trimester of a pregnancy. The current form of the bill, SB1338 by Sen. Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego, would allow for only 41 people in the state, in addition to doctors, who have been through a pilot study on the issue to perform aspiration abortions, but backers say they expect that number to be significantly expanded as the proposal moves forward.

One of the liberal PhDs (not "leftist"--at least at the time) who liked stirring the shitpot and had tagged me for an non-liberal on my first day steered the conversation to the point where I had to provide my input. My comment as a self-employed, quarterly filer: I'll be outraged for background checks on people getting stuff from the government as soon as I see some outrage over the IRS' crawling around in my pants to make sure I'm giving enough stuff to the government. I pissed off a lot of people lunching in that conference room, but they needed my job expertise, and they needed a left-center fielder for the agency softball team.

OK: Now lets think this through: I believe that Obama is systematically destroying the USA. I'm going to elaborate: Destroy all energy production. check Destroy: Using the EPA, destroy small business. check Destroy: Using the financial system, destroy the banking system, check Destroy: The US military through revoking the gay "don't ask" creed and making the military sitting ducks through engagement edicts. check Now the conspiracy of the Muslim president: Obama was well in sync with Osama Bin Laden's whereabouts and life.. Shortly after his election, he "suddenly" discovered him hiding and had him killed. Killed within 1 minute. Very strange indeed given the previous resources. Why not spirit him living in a bag thousands of miles away??? Now why would we kill a treasure trove of information and give him no chance at all?? ?Because he would implicate Obama, plain and simple. It doesn't take a genius to realize that Obama is carrying out the wish of Osama, to destroy the USA.

BTW, Obama is a SCoaMT who enjoyed eating dog.

The Washington Fed folks have become like the Mandarins of China... unelected, insiders, who weild HUGE amounts of Power, through regulation and rules.

I recently read The Buchenwald Report and it's not unreasonable to think we're gradually slipping in that direction instead.

Strange thing -- I was educated in during the 60's up to '75 both private (Catholic) and public schools and China's Civil Service system was taught as a virtue because it required civil service tests (merit) versus the way we hired postmasters, etc., in the early days of our country (spoils).

Of course they always left out of our education the possibility of abuse by indentured, self-serving government employees running the works.

And one more interesting tidbit about the U.S. adopting the Chinese model of the Civil Service system -- It sprouted at the end of the 19th century -- at the same time as the American "progressive" movement took root.

267 Legal legend Alan Dershowitz blasted the special prosecutor in the Trayvon Martin case, accusing her of hiding evidence favorable to defendant George Zimmerman and committing perjury. “If I were this prosecutor, I’d be hiring a lawyer at this point,” Dershowitz said of Angela Cory, the Florida state attorney and special prosecutor who Gov. Rick Scott appointed to handle the case. Dershowitz leveled his bombshell charges in an interview Wednesday with Fox News' Megyn Kelly. The Harvard law professor, noted for winning an acquittal of Claus Von Bulow in the case that inspired the film “Reversal of Fortune,” said Cory overreached by charging Zimmerman with second-degree murder. And he said the affidavit she filed in support of the charges was illegal because it did not include evidence favorable to Zimmerman. “If there are riots, it will be the prosecutor’s fault because she overcharged, raised expectations.” - Alan Dershowitz, Harvard Law professor “This affidavit submitted by the prosecutor in the Florida case is a crime,” Dershowitz said. “It’s a crime.”

281 From the Steyn piece at NRO. The answer isn’t difficult. Indeed, one retired agent spelled it out: “They just didn’t have anything to do.” So they did Dania Suarez and her friends instead. The 21 dedicated public servants jetted in on the so-called car-planes, the big transports flying in the tinted-windowed black Suburbans for the presidential motorcade. The “car-plane” guys show up a few days in advance, but usually two weeks or so after the really advanced advance team has hit the ground. And there was nothing for them to do. There is no reason for them to be there. So instead they went to the Pleyclub. As I understand it, the 21 public servants did not technically bill U.S. taxpayers for their “escorts.” But you suckers paid for them to fly to Cartagena, and they were enjoying those women on your time. On foreign trips, aside from the 40 or so armored limousines, there are usually 200 Secret Service agents plus a couple of dozen sniffer dogs. Did the latter take any Colombian bitches back to their kennels? Or are they just the entrée for Obama’s embassy banquet?

But the late Roman Empire, though centered on a hellenistic society, was still Roman. Roman was an ideal, not an ethnicity. Kinda like America. The Byzantines were just as Roman as Constantine and Diocletian were. None of them, mind you, were as Roman as Julius Caesar, Cicero, Augustus, Claudius, and Marcus Aurelius were. But that had nothing to do with the language they spoke.

excuse me, but no, the UCMJ does NOT forbid political speech.  It says you cannot do it in uniform.  It says you cannot talk about operations or classified data.  It says you cannot portray yourself as speaking for the military, unless you are.  It says you cannot Dis the President if you are an OFFICER.

Note, that those who SUPPORTED the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, were not thrown out.  Note that those who Support CAIR, were not thrown out.  Note that Anti War soldiers, some of who even went to demonstrations in uniform, were not thrown out...

Now... it is your DUTY NOT to obey an illegal order... and has been since the earliest days of the Republic ( a Navy Capt, took a ship bound for France, under orders from the President, but Congress had not authorized it, so he was found to have followed an illegal order, and was held liable).

So, the conundrum remains... as the Militarys body of LAW is the UCMJ, which Congress does write... can the military give an order, through their authorization by Congress, telling you NOT to excercise your Right to Political Speech?  And are there any Limits to said orders?

First off,  I think this might just be a drunken party that  went to hell in a handbasket  (as drunken parties often do).  But, also, this might be one or both of two things.  1)   This is just another effort on the part of this regime to degrade the image of the US internationally, or  2)  the SCOAMT is looking to replace the  Secret Service  with  a security contingent  of his own.

We have to remember that Hitler's security at the beginning of  the Third Reich were the  "brown shirts".  He had started to distrust them so he engineered the "The Night of the Long Knives" and had the brown shirt leadership murdered.  It was then that he authorized the Nazi SS to provide for his security.

So it turns out the Corey appointment hasn't worked out well for Scott (and way worse for Zimmerman, though if the evidence is covered fairly in the press[HA!], it may help in the long-term).  I'd bet he could get back in the good graces of flyover country by delivering Florida in 2012...not that we'd forget, but we'd place the blame on Corey for her "aggressive prosecution as a re-election strategy".

Jeb can deliver Florida. There's an odd ability of even those who dislike W to disassociate him from Jeb. He remains very, very popular in Florida.

He'll start campaigning pretty hard for Romney is my guess yet, unfortunately, he may be taking a shot at the V.P. slot.

He just needs to support Romney but, otherwise, sit back and prepare George P. to continue the legacy.

I remember the first time that happened. I thought my memory had failed, or I was in Groundhog Day or something. Nope! People who sit and watch MSM shows and read MSM newspapers are actually somehow *drained* of information in the process. I had another discussion years ago with someone who was going off on an "evil Bush" rant, they knew almost *nothing* about the man they were vilifying - no history, no actual specific criticisms, no facts other than a few taglines from whatever retarded comedian is pretending to be a journalist this week. The best part was them bringing up the discredited TANG memos and not knowing GW was a fighter pilot. I hate to use the legitimately disadvantaged as mere metaphors twice in one post, but talking to a liberal is like talking to an angry Alzheimer's patient, only worse because they don't actually have the disorder, they're just aggressively ignorant.

He was born and raised in Manhattan (has lived in TX and GA most of his adult life since college and doesn't miss Gotham City a damned bit), is a lib, and we've just always kept politics out of our conversations.

I was having a bad day when he called one afternoon a few weeks ago, and when he asked how our boy was doing, I told him how I couldn't wait to have the golf-playing, partying jackass out of office.  Our son had just lost a friend to an IED, and I was fed up.

He expressed concern and sympathy, then said, "Well you know, Bush golfed for the entire eight years he was in office and it was in our faces."

I corrected him (barely controlling my anger) and told him that teh evul BOOOSH gave up golf because it showed a lack of respect for the troops.

He had no idea.  But then he gets his "news" from the NYT, CNN and MSNBC.

Now, properly, a political system is designed to prevent the "less aggressive in pursuit of the facts" from crippling everything. But those protections went out the window when the insiders discovered they could buy votes. It isn't a matter of blame. I get that people have more important (it seems) things to do. Challenge the gatekeepers. What we don't have is an aggressive, consistent "political action committee." The GOP cares too much about elections, the TEA Party is too disorganized. We need to fund a team of "information brokers" to dig and push, 24/7. What we have now on that front is a divided group of amateurs doing this in their spare time, and not terribly well. We don't *have* to become some secular priesthood of commie evangelists with a "plan" if we can keep the cameras pointed at the public servants. 411 @ 300 Well, the question of when does the continuity of the Roman Empire end is a complicated one. The traditional date is either AD 476 (a virtually meaningless date) or AD 1453 (the fall of Constantinople). More accurate than either would be AD 1204, when the City was sacked, the Empire was overthrown and replaced with a feeble imitation. However, I personally maintain that definitive break in Roman civilization occurred in AD 235, when Emperor Alexander Severus was assassinated. Once the Empire recovered (half a century, several civil wars, and 2 major independence movements later), the resulting society was virtually unrecognizable. Gone were any ideas (or even pretenses) of limited constitutional government that was accountable to the people. In its place, the Dominate. Which, while an awesome name, sums up how the Emperors decided to rule their Empire from that time on.

Steevy, I think that's unfair.  Most people probably haven't given much thought to why they lean one way or the other, but I would venture that most who lean conservative have a strong "leave me alone to do as I wish" streak.  If that's part of your ethos, you wouldn't be attracted to bureaucracy or academia, unless you're into hypocrisy in a serious way.  It's not about fortune so much as fit, in my opinion.

Additionally, when service to the government begets fortune, it's time to start reconsidering the whole arrangement.

420 ChrisValentine- I've been using the Theodosians as my touchstone. I'm not sure where Theodosius I was from - it may even have been the West - but once that family got itself into Constantinople, it made sure to treat the West as a VERY junior partner. This would have been the late 300s AD, after Adrianople.

I like the part where they kept bribing barbarians in the Balkans to go west and to be the other guys' problem. That, and when Leo made his bid to retake North Africa from the Vandals, he made sure everyone in his fleet was personally loyal to Constantinople and not to Rome. He even imposed his pet "emperor" on Rome (Anthemius, IIRC).

Reflexive defense on my part against the "evil cons only care about teh moneys!!!!!" charge.  I do think that a desire to succeed financially is part of the conservative ethos - provide for yourself and yours, etc., but you cannot ignore the fact that the "leave me alone" ethos is also a big part of it.  Apart from some our one-issue socon allies, that seems to be a defining attribute of most conservatives, especially those who haven't spent much time figuring out why they lean the way they do.  Fundamentally, people who lean conservative don't trust or desire to be  part of a collective that tells others what to do.  My opinion, of course, but there might be something to it.  Honestly, I'm fleshing this whole thing out as I type.

Interesting point.  I would agree that the transition from the Principate to the Dominate was an inflection point in Roman history, but that did not change the pretensions of the state to being Roman.  The transition from Roman to Byzantine history occurs sometime in the mid fifth century (I have trouble taking the last few Western emperors seriously).

More importantly, however, I don't think the Byzantines had the same approach to conquest that their Roman predecessors did.  If you told me that an army showed up and executed five guys to ensure compliance from the rest of the population, I would easily believe that those guys were Roman, but would have trouble believing they were Byzantine.  Except for maybe Basil Bulgaroktonos.  But then again, he was killing Bulgars not "Turks."

By the time the Turks showed up at all the Byzantines were so thoroughly on the defensive that the tactics of the "good old days" were completely abandoned.

However, even if we accept for the moment that this smug little twerp was just using "Turks" as a generic stand-in for "people we want to push around", the fellow is still (a) an idiot and (b) evil for thinking that this type of capricious tyranny is an acceptable way of dealing with AMERICANS.

Not for a fucking government to regulate every aspect of our lives and tell us what we can or cannot do or what we can or cannot say.

490 Apothic is not very expensive, probably 8-10 bucks a bottle. I tend to go with blends when I'm flying blind because I figure SOMEONE had to taste the darned thing and decide it was drinkable. And they also tend to be cheaper. Plus, the descriptions are often more detailed than on a single vintage because they have to describe what they created with the blend.

Nope, it was not.  Since he has a habit of being bendy, let's apply some rightward pressure.  Certainly the party norms have moved right in the last several years, so he should come along.  He has no reason to move left either now or after he wins the CinC spot, if he does, unless things on the ground change in a big way. Are we great?  No.  Are we good enough to toss the JEF?  It's looking better every day.

Or an article about the democrats about to break their promises on the debt deal and just keep spending money regardless.

Boy, you just try dissing the CEO of the private corporation you work for, and see what happens to you.

FACT:  when you are an employee of the US government-- especially the military, where you are in a direct chain-of-command that leads to the POTUS-- you give up some of your Free Speech rights, rights which are not unlimited and absolute.

See:  Hatch Act, applied to civilian employees.

Myself, I would have preferred that the Marine in question had been Article 15'ed, or even court-martialed, but we don't know all the facts here.

Also:

Sovereign Man just had a post that one of his readers had been trying to renounce his citizenship, had been taking a while. He got his answer today. No, you may not. Denied. You are our milk cow.

More bullshit:   I suspect the person in question wants to renounce his citizenship and still live here.  AM I RIGHT?

google " "renouncing US citizenship" procedure " and learn the facts.

532 I find it amazing that the either the Mediterranean is next to western China where the Turks were in this time frame, Or that the Romans conquered Western China, or that the Turks were an identifiable group in the time frame, or that the Romans took over Greek Asia Minor by combat as opposed to the King of Pergamon dying with Rome as his heir and Pontus becoming a client kingdom, Or that there were independant villiages in Asia Minor which had a long history of being controlled since Persian days, as opposed to being fully intigrated into the Pontus, Greek League, Selucid, or Armenian empires....
