In case you're unclear on what's at stake both today in Wisconsin and again in November, Jimmy P. provides a chart from CBO that sums it up nicely:

That red arrow is where the CBO's forecasting model breaks because it can't handle a 250% debt to GDP ratio.
The blue social model has failed both here and abroad, and we are now in a race to kill it before it kills us.
Students of democracy from Alexis de Tocqueville to Mancur Olson have pointed out that the greatest threat to self-government comes from the tendency of democracies to become barnacled with special interests that vote themselves more benefits than society can afford. This is the crisis of the modern entitlement state, which is unfolding from California to Illinois, Greece, Italy and even Washington. Wisconsin is a critical test of whether democracies can reform before the crisis becomes debilitating.
The ball's in your court, Cheeseheads.
Update: Bonus content from the RNC detailing King Putt's miserable economic record.
Update 2: Monty emailed this to me the other day with a subject line of, "If I were still writing my DOOM posts, this would be a headliner...." Nice knowing you, Spain.

Repeated by Bastiat in The Law as well. We all know what it would take, but it will never happen. Make voting a condition of paying some significant amount of taxes.

They don't even care about the budget bill Walker signed; they started moving to recall him before he even took the oath of office. A little like Islamists blowing shit up when they hear a story about an infidel touching a Koran, the bill just gave them an excuse to do shit they were going to do anyway.
They don't want democracy; they want to rule. Democracy lets ordinary people have a say, and they're pissed that some ordinary (they use will perjorative adverbs) people don't want to be ruled.

Well.... lets see... how do you destroy an economy.
You make it so the business owners have NO idea what their taxes will be like 6 months from now, so they cannot budget.
You increase the cost of labor, but don't tell them by how much, by creating a new health care system... but have no limits on it... again so they cannot budget.
You use Gov itself to increase the price of energy, by not allowing for energy production by prooven means, while pouring money into expensive non viable forms of energy.
You lower interest rates to the point where it is way less than inflation, by telling lies about the Real inflation rate, making saving stupid which leads to people putting money in the stock market to try to keep ahead of inflation (which creates a bubble).
You have a housing price crises, but don't solve any of the root causes... you allow the same people to continue to play the game.
You give Big Banks no interest loan money, so they can buy up smaller banks who are going under... (the 5 biggest banks have increased in size dramaticly under Obama).
You destroy Bankruptcy law by giving Unions preferential treatement.
You threaten to Raise Taxes, by the largest amount EVAH, during a depresion (if you take deficit spending out, and add in real inflation, we have never been out of the 'recession').
Need I go on?

It's fun to forecast DOOM and all, but CBO projections never fill me with confidence. These are the same people who think that no tax cut is even partially self-financing. And the fact is they DO NOT KNOW what effects debt has or will have.
Regardless, hopefully some time before 2037 the people running the US will realize that we're not on the gold standard any more. Government consumption of savings can starve the private sector of capital in a hard money system, but it doesn't have to work that way in a fiat system. The only thing that really matters is whether government spending is consuming too much of the available goods and services. Given the high unemployment and idle capactiy we have right now, it's hard to make that case.
Hopefully these projections will not scare our so-called leaders into focusing entirely on austerity measures. It is FAR more important to reinvigorate the private sector by fixing energy policy, enviro regs, etc. Get the government roadblocks out of the way, and let employment come back before budget slashing, or we're going to be losing elections for a long time to come.

I actually had a talk with my investment guy yesterday about possibly taking the tax and penalty hit to withdraw some funds. We decided at the moment no but at a certain point, yup, it'll be better to cash out and buy physical goods then watch pixels disappear.
I've mentioned before how blindly furious all of this makes me for my parents. My parents struggled and scrimped and saved and did all the right things so they could have a decent retirement. Now they are getting basically negative returns on everything, including the safest possible investments, given the real inflation rate. Hell, my dad's right, it makes more sense for them to buy a new car then to leave money in the market.

Seems to me that lightening up on the marijuana laws would negate the effects of reducing portion sizes.
If they really want people to eat smaller portions they should encourage cigarette smoking. Side benefits include increased tax revenue and decreased lifespan (saving money on Social Security and Medicare payments).

Some more juicebox philosophy regarding today's recall in Wisconsin from the "reality" bunch:
If we lose, blame it on union turnout. The unions should have made it mandatory to show proof of voting--either a sticker from a poll watcher or a photo. Punishment could range from humiliation to loss of union legal protection for one year. When you're fighting for your life, you fight with all tools available--and worry about the consequences after the doctor announces you'll survive. Unions have lost their way--and their balls. Mike Quill, where are you?
Sweet are the tears.

The only illegals getting free dental care are the kids.
The dentists managed to exclude themselves from being required to work on someone regardless of their situation as hospitals are required to do. Supposedly because you can't die from a toothache but it turns out that you can so that may change.
Medicare and Medicaid doesn't pay for dental care of most any type for anyone over 18. The only exception is if it's part of a surgery that is covered. (don't ask me. I assume someone has surgery for cancer of the jaw or something I don' know.)
Apparently the Dentists have better lobbyists than the MD's OR the MD's thought they would get paid. (silly MD's. Tricks are for Democrats.)

[redacted], here are the results from the final poll of the recall election against Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. The election is tomorrow:
PPP's final poll on the Wisconsin recall finds Scott Walker ahead,
but also a race that's tightening. Walker leads Tom Barrett 50-47.
That's down from 50-45 on a PPP poll conducted three weeks ago and it's
also down from a 52-45 lead that Walker posted in a Marquette Law poll
released last week.
Barrett is actually winning independent voters by a 48-46 margin.
The reason he continues to trail overall is that Republicans are more
excited about voting in Tuesday's election than Democrats are. Our
projected electorate voted for Barack Obama by only 7 points, even
though he took the state by 14 in 2008. If the folks who turn out on
Tuesday actually matched the 2008 electorate, Barrett would be ahead of
Walker by a 50-49 margin. It's cliche but this is a race that really is
going to completely come down to turnout.
Please, help the final effort to turn out voters by chipping in $3 to Tom Barrett. The money will be wired to the campaign tonight so it can be used in the final push tomorrow.
Keep fighting,
Chris Cocksucker Bowers

Okay, which one of you reprobates posted this as a gag over on Kos?
We'll see what happens today, but the idea that Wisconsin represents a victory no matter the outcome is just silly.
What the Wisconsin recalls have energized appears to be the Republican party. The "elephant in the room" (pardon the metaphor) is that every poll shows that it is GOP voters that are most excited and motivated, not those favoring recall. There is a lesson there no one seems to want to acknowledge. If Scott Walker wins today, he becomes a national hero to the GOP and the energizing effect continues and expands.
So far, the last three years in Wisconsin have been disastrous for labor and for progressives, and a huge victory for conservative forces. We can only hope that isn't capped off today with a resounding GOP win. To say that, well, labor was galvanized is "sweet lemons" (the opposite of sour grapes).
Being slapped down three times by the voters of a state as progressive as Wisconsin has been cannot be spun as a win. It will be - if it occurs - a loss of epic proportions exposing strategic folly and electoral weakness.
President Obama is going to win in November, nationally and probably in Wisconsin. But he was very wise not to publicly make this recall election a proxy for the Presidential election. His campaign organization has been quietly effective in the recall, and is part of the reason there is chance for an upset. But the recall effort may be a few hours away from accomplishing exactly the opposite of what it intended.
Except for the Obama winning in November bit, this guy writes like the scales have fallen from his eyes.

There was a discount for paying cash for gasoline. The credit card lobby persuaded our Congress to outlaw it.
------
Why did they need congress? It's in the Mastercard merchant agreement that every business must agree to in order to take credit cards. Which is why I wonder how the local municipalities around here can charge a "convenience fee" for paying by card which coincidentally is the same percentage that they are charged for accepting cards. No one big or small is allowed to do that - and still accept Mastercard.

Most of their study replicates several earlier research publications. These are hardly mentioned. The writers make extravagant and false claims to originality and priority of research. There appear to be serious errors in their use of statistical bases which result in grossly mistaken functions and comparisons. Some of their conclusions cannot be obtained even from their flawed findings. The authors have made their raw data unavailable so that its accuracy cannot be independently checked. In my opinion, the authors have engaged in repeated instances of scientific misconduct.

I just finished "Churchill: Young Man in a Hurry" by Ted Morgan. Pretty good overview of 1874-1915, covering his youth, experiences in Afghanistan and South Africa, and up to Gallipoli. The man led such a huge life, I think any one book covering the whole of it would be sorely lacking.

What most people don't know is that Winston Churchill was a lot like Obama regarding Economics. Absolutely clueless. He came to America in the 30s and gave speeches. He had no clue as to what to do.

"It refrains me from not beating the (expletive) out of you right now, because you ask me stupid questions."
Combined with Busch's outbursts, poor results and no sponsorship, Finch stressed the urgency in his driver to turn his situation around.
"It's affecting me. If I can't get a sponsor, I can't keep running without a sponsor," Finch said. "That's a slow death. I don't want to do that.
"Hopefully if we can get Kurt's mind right, we can win some races. If we can't get his mind right so we can race into the future, then I'll go do something else. It's just that simple. I'm doing my part. We've wrecked 14 cars this year. Four at Daytona. We've killed three or four cars and had to completely throw them away."

Actually, the work is performed by a dental (or dental hygiene) student with a licensed dental professional or two watching.
I can see that, too.
I only went to the clinic once, and it was just my experience that the students were watching.

Why does a Zumwalt class DDG cost $3 billion?
Because it is good at blowing shit up in multiple ways. I would rather pay $3 billion for a DDG than $3 billion to raise awareness of the dangers of Velveeta sniffing.
