A former CIA officer was indicted Thursday on charges of leaking secrets to journalists, including the name of a covert agent and the role of another CIA employee in classified operations.

Note my use of "long-term".  Besides, nobody is talking about death star type energy densities.  The current self-imposed limit is average solar density, but it could be higher. 

In any case, even if you assume there are problems beaming the energy through the atmosphere, there are problems with every form of energy harvesting and delivery.  That doesn't mean you just give up.  It means you try to engineer around the problems.

100 Are our abstractions goofy, I ask myself sometimes when I see these problem numbers and coincidentally have the urge to give a damn. Can we actually fix these problems inside of the structures that are in place. Do we have to burn down, or remodel significantly, the government and social structures within which we are trying to solve problems. We see clear approaches to solutions  modeled in our minds, but with goofy abstractions of the domain where the solution must actually be applied. I don't have much confidence that our  time tested, and much loved, systems will accommodate our needed solutions, in this actual day and age, or into the future. Laser beams can bounce off the moon, but these are used in a very very low power detection problem (measurement of the reflected return pulse).  This is a far cry from delivering substantial amounts of continuous power over large distances.

I'm actually stuck on the question of how much Gov't should be involved in the spending on science.  At the basic science level (i.e. pure bench science) it seems that some Gov't funding may not be bad since this is an important (but ultimately unprofitable) aspect of science.  As you move closer to the development aspect though Gov't funding should taper off pretty swiftly.  After all there's no reason to subsidize R&D for corperations (beyond the standard stuff in the tax code) as you get into the issue of picking winners and losers at that point.

But like I said, I'm stuck, and I waffle back and forth on this one.  (Mostly from the position of "Almost nil funding" to the "Quickly tapering" position, not much past that.)

I know a little bit about Virginia, so I'll put my two cents worth in.

Northern Virginia is growing like a weed and is extremely affluent.  Obama polls very well with wealthy, 'educated' whites.  Also, the Fluke Strategy helped him with NoVa women.  The rest of the state is becoming more diluted with retirees from the Northeast and former government workers, also polling well with Obama.   The military is not as conservative as it once was, I'm sad to say, and I'm sure I might get an argument about this, but I think you'll hear more about it over the course of time.  And, lastly, there is a sizeable black population which will vote for BarryO no matter what.

Actually, I suspect that the future payout is there for STEM degrees. I think the problem is that the college-age generation realizes that STEM degrees require, you know, WORK, while social sciences/humanities degrees allow you to sleep in class and binge drink for 4 years, but they don't offer squat for future opportunities. The constant barrage of "I have a PhD in Women's Studies and can't pay my student loans" media stories just reflect that fact.

I can actually shed some light on this as a former STEM fielder (biochemistry) who left the STEMs for an advanced degree in something else (we'll call it applied Philosophy).  I'd like to think I have no problem with the hard work aspect of it (and frankly it's more hard work to change your field.)  But STEM is stort of an odd thing.  First off, in the biological fields, there's this "All in or not" problem.  With my B.S. I barely qualified for a Lab tech job (33k/year) an M.S. actually didn't help much, and a PhD creates this really really strange situation where your job opportunites are either great or crappy depending on your paper production level in Grad school, area of expertise, etc.  But the requirement to drill down to a very specific topic to get a PhD is somewhat paralyzing.  Even so, if you can score an industry job the pay off is there, but if you go into academics you'll have to slog your way up the academic food chain for quite some time.

Contrast this with a business degree for example, and you'll see why people get leary of STEM fields.  There's a 7 year or so committment to a PhD for uncertainty on the other end.  Or there's the shorter 4 year committment for a business degree with at least some better certainty.

Granted, fields like Compsci and engineering may be better but my wife's degree is in Physics (MS) and she had trouble securing a job.  It was only happenstance that she got the job she did, if we had missed it, she'd still be out of work most likely.

I just do not see the sense in the market binge engendered at Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, The Presidents' Days White Sale!, Valentines and Easter.
