Doubling down: GOP wins big [Fritzworth]
— Open Blogger

All the way back on June 1st -- almost two months ago -- I put my marker down that Romney was going to win big this fall:

Not 1984 big, but so decisively as to preempt any Dem claims of voter irregularities and to forestall any Dem voter irregularities themselves. ("If it's not close, they can't cheat." -- Hugh Hewett)

I'm doubling down now. I believe that things are shaping up for this to be an even uglier election for the Dems than 2010 was in terms of (a) GOP/conservative enthusiasm, (b) Dem discouragement, and (c) a significant break in independent voting towards the GOP candidates.

As a consequence, I believe:

  • Romney will win big (as per my original post).
  • The GOP will not only hold onto the House, but they may actually add a seat or two.
  • The GOP will take the Senate.
  • The 2010 trend towards GOP control of statehouses and state legislatures will continue.

Yes, yes, I know -- don't get cocky. I'm not. But I have to say that the GOP national committee under Reince Priebus is the best I've ever seen it, period, and Romney has not only taken the gloves off but seems to be unwrapping the tape from his hands. Meanwhile, the Dems -- and in particular, the Obama campaign -- is just not gaining traction. I think the "blame Bush/GOP" schtick has finally expired, just in time for the populace to put the blame for the current wretched economy squarely where it belongs.

I'd say pass the popcorn, but I plan to be in the thick of it, to continue to make financial donations (I have already) and to make donations of time as well. This is, IMHO, as critical an election as we've had in my lifetime -- and I'm nearly 60. Should be interesting. ..fritz..

ADDENDUM [2030 ET] One more data point that lends to my conclusion: my liberal friends on Facebook (and I have quite a few) seem to be getting a bit more, uh, desperate. When their best response to Romney's riff on Obama's "You didn't build that" gaffe is to dredge up a Romney quote to Olympic atheletes -- as if there's a direct parallel between athletes making it to the Olympics and the fundamental relationship between government and business -- you know things aren't going well. As I said: no real traction on the Left.

Oh, and dragonfly: I'll back up my marker with $1000. How's about you? ..fritz..

24 Fritz, you old bastard! I've been saying 40 states since at least April but probably March. Romney wins 40, the Senate flips but is close (less than 55 Republicans), the House stays about the same (we've already got all the seats we should rightfully have) plus or minus 5, and I'll agree with you on the state houses. This is not going to be the close race people who get paid to say it will be at saying it will be. This will be a 2010-like bloodbath.

IF Romney wins big  and we retake the Senate etc., then for the love of pete, DO NOT announce how you are President of all the peoples  (like W), or assign House/Senate committee chairs in a bi-partisan manner (1984).  Scew that noise.

Undo all the damage first using your mandate capital  and majority powers.  Screw the other guys right out of business, "settling the family accounts" as it were.  Turn the IGs loose.  Close down EPA, DOE, BATF, and about half a dozen other nuisance agencies.

The race appears close now, as there are still "uncommitted voters", who are, in fact, committed.  About the middle of October it will become evident that Obama is going to lose.

Obama's internal polling may already be revealing the bad news; the internal polling is more sophisticated than the stuff we are spoon fed from Rasmussen, Gallup and the networks.  I think he is already becoming desparate, and we will see subtle signs of desparation between now and Labor Day.  The month of September will be a madhouse, barring some huge financial upheavel in Europe.  Obama will be scrambling at full tilt boogey to get after Romney, and Romney will have plenty of Presidential campaign money to run adds and give him a dose of his own medicine. Come October and perhaps the first and only debate, the Orwellian nature of the Media will become almost comical.  Come the middle of October, the madness will begin to subside, as the apparent outcome will become evident to most people.

And just now, that insipid add with Mitt singing "America the Beautiful" and Obama running his bullshit was on the TV.  This guy is a loser.

I'm in the 'crawl-over-broken-glass' group, too.

....Stand in line outside in an Ice Storm.

....Camp out in the snow, the night before.

Yeah, I'll be there.

You damn betcha.

But I also know that there are a lot of lazy voters out there.

People who aren't paying attention.

People who aren't really hurting....yet.

People who might just prefer to stay home, instead of bothering to vote...if they think this thing is going to be a "big landslide" without their vote.

Not to mention 'Jinxing our Luck'.

Every time I've bragged on how well a thing is going...it suddenly stops going well.

Brag on your car?....It craps out.

Brag on a stock?.....It crashes.

And then there is the proverbial guy who brags on how well his marriage is doing....and his wife leaves him a month later!

So please forgive me, if I cringe, when I see people making the prediction  that..." Romney will win big".

Because this is too important.

Winning this time...is far more important than someone's perceived 'need' to make a prediction.

God, I hope you're right, but how many times has Bumbles given a class warfare speech, or have a Joe the Plumber moment, or say "you didn't build that" in the middle of a standard marxist rant, and people still refuse to see it?

How little do you have to know about economics, to realize that if you dramatically raise the cost (and rick of future costs) of hiring someone, that fewer people - especially at the lower levels - will be hired? Yet people still refuse to recognize that Obamacare, in large part, created the "jobless recovery".

How little do you have to know about banking, to realize that bankers do NOT normally loan money to people who cannot pay it back? That such behavior requires government involvement, and that it was THIS, and not anything Bush did, that caused the "bubble" that burst on Bush's watch.

Well, I saw a short clip of Romney, and he was infront of a slogan "We DID build it!" That just MIGHT catch on. If McLame had adopted a similar slogan about NOT sharing the wealth, maybe - just maybe - we could have avoided the scandal of electing the first socialist president.

She emailed me and said she would love to include me in their lists.  I was a little taken back.  They are not including donors in their lists in a battle ground state?

A SERIOUS flaw.  She was surprised too.  Said she'd get right on it.

I'm frustrated, but hopeful. I believe it is POSSIBLE to break the public's image of Obama. They can run ads with Obama making all kinds of promises, and the headlines showing he didn't deliver. They've already started to show people that Obama lies. They can soon start to move from "Obama lied about me" to "Obama flat-out lied to YOU", and then maybe graduate to "Obama lies a WHOLE LOT - and about BIG things".

They can also show how downright anti-American Obama is, using this latest "didn't build" stuff, as well as other stuff.

The "Obama TRIED; you TRIED, too; it's OK to fire him" ads by the RNC just seem weird, and f-ed up, to me.

Romney is a extraordinarily competent business man, and as such he should know how to sell to the general public. We need to see more of those spots talking about Romney closing down his HQ to save an employee's daughter. Who can see that, and say that Romney's not likeable? What did Obama ever do that even comes close to that? Smoke pot!?! My God!!

Romney sings "God Bless America" (on Obama ads!!), while Obama doesn't know you're supposed to kiss at a ball game. So who's out-of-touch? Obama didn't even grow up in America!!

It is mid  January, 2013 and on a sleepless, restless night,  Obama is walking down the White House hallway where all the past Presidents' portraits are located.  Having been defeated in a landslide, he bears the burden of causing the implosion of the Democratic Party.  His close advisors and friends have abandoned him, Jarrett has  already packed up and returned to slum-lording in Chicago, Brian Williams no longer bows to him, ManCountry notified him that his lifetime membership has been revoked, with no chance for appeal or reinstatement.

As he stares at FDR's portrait, he turns the same question over and over in his mind.  The same question that has plagued him since that early November night, "Where did I go wrong? "  Almost unnoticed, a fly lands on his cheek.  Two more can be heard buzzing nearby.  Turning, he walks along a bit further, feeling a sudden chill as if the excellent heating system in the White House suddenly dropped 50 degrees from its balmy 82.

A faint familiar smell comes to him, causing him to exclaim, "Damn dog shit in the corner again!  That pooch is gonna be history.  No wonder there are so  many flies about."

Suddenly, the hairs on his neck stand up, his sack  pulls tight.  A voice;  deep, loud, clear and menacing shatters the calm, "GET OUT!  GET THE FUCK RIGHT OUT TONIGHT!"  Obama looks wildly about, fear causing his eyes to widen and his bowels to liquify.  It seems all the Presidents portraits are looking at him malevolently, their expressions dark and foreboding in the hallway lighting.  "GET THE HELL OUT OF OUR WHITE HOUSE AND CRAWL BACK INTO THE CHICAGO SEWER FROM WHENCE YOU CAME.  NEVER MAKE A PUBLIC APPEARANCE AGAIN YOU INSUFFERABLE TWIT.  THAT GOES DOUBLE FOR THAT FESTERING GOB OF A WIFE!  GET THEE HENCE!!"

Fear grips his guts and twists hard.  Turning in a panic, he stumbles then catches himself.  The Presidents' eyes seem to follow his graceless movements, mocking him.  He runs to the nearest bathroom, wrists flapping expressively, filled with the sudden need to void his entire GI tract.  As he washes up afterwards, he notices  with a shock that his hair has turned white by the temples and that his face has aged 30 years.  "WE SAID GET OUT NOW!" says the same voice.  As  Obama  falls in a faint, his last conscious thought is,  "you'd think they be thankin' me!"

I certainly understand that.  I am talking about getting invited to roundtable meetings and business groups.   They have had three in NC, haven't been invite to a one.  My next door neighbor hosted Mitt at his factory.  He invited me, no one else said anything. The paper mentioned it a day before the event.

They don't look like they have much of a ground game.  One office in Raleigh.  In February Obama already had SIX offices in NC.  I think he has 12 now.

Fritz,

I generally agree with your prognostications. I too have been predicting an at minimum "handy" (that is, solid) Romney victory that might even climb into sub-landslide proportions.
For instance, Obama won big in 08'. It would not in the slightest surprise me if Romney won that big (or perhaps even bigger) this fall. At this point, I would be fairly surprised if Romney only barely eked across the finish line.
If nothing major changes (in terms of "the underlying dynamics" - as Ace puts it) between now and election day: I would be stunned at an Obama victory.

The big moving parts (the "underlying dynamics") of the coming historical election are not yet reflected in the polls. Nor should we expect that will be until well after Labor Day. - That is the nature of a voting American public waking up to a serious decision that must be made based on where the country is, what it has been promised (by the current President and his Party), and where it is obviously heading.
But when those big moving parts do begin to churn and grind, the picture will not be pretty for Obamamessiah, the incompetent 'prophet'. No manner of promising to lower the ocean levels will have a prayer of saving him then.
I remember reading your doubling down post in June, Fritz. I found it encouraging for yet another rational voice to speak up and add his tone to the pronouncement which I joined around March/April. It was an inspiring and well thought out piece.
It's even more encouraging to hear you reaffirming that sentiment now.
I would only add one minor analogic refinement to this, your most recent post:

"...and Romeny has not only taken the gloves off but seems to unwrapping the tape from his hands..."  - to have his fists properly sized and fitted for a custom made pair of brass knuckles.

Amen.

239 There's a really great blog post at the NYT today by Thomas Edsall called "From Hope and Change to Anything Goes" about what Obama's strategy is so far. He is using policy to pander to and shore up his base groups, and using scorching attack ads to try to depress turnout among white males who would otherwise be inclined to vote for Romney - especially white males without a college degree. The whole "outsourcing" theme was targeted specifically to working-class white men to get them to believe that Romney is "not on their side" and actually helped cause their plight by leading the charge that sent their jobs overseas. Obama is hoping they will stay home. This is why Axerlod and Plouffe have fought so hard over when Romney actually left Bain, and why they have gone apoplectic over the fact-checkers that have ruled their ads false. This is the whole ball of wax for Obama. He knows he can't win by just appealing to women and minorities, if white males break heavily for Romney and turn out in large numbers.

262 Yep, as other commenters noted, Obama's strategy is now clear: it's strictly GOTV. He won't try to persuade, because he's realized he's lost the independents and is rapidly losing the white working class. His only hope is to energize his base and try to depress the GOP turnout.

This means it's crucial that you morons get involved at whatever level you can. Knock on doors, put out literature, and most of all, register voters on our side. I'm going to a big new citizen swearing-in event this week with my clipboard and a stack of voter registration cards with the goal of registering 100 new Republicans.

Now theyÂ’re trying to wriggle out of what they agreed to. Instead of making tough choices to reduce the deficit, theyÂ’d rather protect tax cuts for some of the wealthiest Americans, even if it risks big cuts in our military. And IÂ’ve got to tell you, VFW, I disagree. If the choice is between tax cuts that the wealthiest Americans donÂ’t need and funding our troops that they definitely need to keep our country strong, I will stand with our troops every single time. (Applause.) So letÂ’s stop playing politics with our military. LetÂ’s get serious and reduce our deficit and keep our military strong.

288 WASHINGTON – Despite concerted Democratic attacks on his business record, Republican challenger Mitt Romney scores a significant advantage over President Obama when it comes to managing the economy, reducing the federal budget deficit and creating jobs, a national USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds.

By more than 2-1, 63%-29%, those surveyed say Romney's background in business, including his tenure at the private equity firm Bain Capital, would cause him to make good decisions, not bad ones, in dealing with the nation's economic problems over the next four years.

331 @312, a 269 tie would be delicious political pron. Would not be able to contain the Schadenb--, er, Shadenfreude.

Assuming every state delegation voted the way their electoral votes went, that is.

Libs would be whining for years. It would make Bush v. Gore look like a lovefest.

332 I could very well see Ron Paul get a nomination for Veep at the convention. Only if Romney wants him. Mitt has 1473 delegates. It would take a ton of defections, plus Gingrich's 145, plus Santorum's 267. Romney will get who he wants. They'd probably have enough states to nominate him for the GOP Veep spot. He won't get it. Heck, he probably would try to quash it in the hopes of helping potistion Rand. But that doesn't mean that they won't try to nominate him as the GOP Veep candidates.

335 One thing that really heats up a house quick is the fridge.  I glued some foam insulation panels on the sides of mine and its efficiency increased considerably.  Even so, all the heat coming off the condenser coil is just getting dumped into living space.

A plasma TV is a major heater too.  Some of the larger ones are pumping out many hundreds of watts.

336 335 Supposedly but he had a famous quote. After Richard Nixon presented a National Champion tropht to University of Texas after they won their Bowl game,Paterno(who's team went undefeated) was annoyed. He said,"How does Nixon know so much about football and so little about Watergate?"

337 There is only one real weapon that I'd like to have.... Lahti L-39 (Google it).  A nice Scandi (Finnish) made weapon:

"The gun was also widely used in the Cold Charlie technique, where the Finns would use a mannequin to pose as an officer sloppily covering himself, Soviet snipers would fire upon it, and the Finns would use the Lahti L-39 to fire at the Soviet sniper."

340 Ah, "Papa" Joe Paterno, a veritable font of quotable wisdom.

Too bad he didn't have the balls to stop a pedophile who worked for him.

If he was a Republican, than he must have been a quivering RINO.

341 But that doesn't mean that they won't try to nominate him as the GOP Veep candidates. Maybe possible. According to the 2008 Rules: (b) Each candidate for nomination for President of the United States and Vice President of the United States shall demonstrate the support of a plurality of the delegates from each of five (5) or more states, severally, prior to the presentation of the name of that candidate for nomination. I haven't looked but Paul supporters might make that. Or maybe not.

344 345 - During the morning Paterno slugfest it was posted that Paterno made few political donations in his life.  Low amounts to Sestak, Obama and Paterno's own son, who ran as an "R."  Doesn't sound like he was too "R," does it?

346 @349  I am from Chicago and I do not care what you say your "facts" are.  I have my facts and speak bluntly and loudly and I hate Penn State. Joe Paterno was a Republican.  Therefore, Republicans, like every person in Pennsylvania, are awful, unspeakable people.  Vote Obama!

347 Joe Paterno was a Republican. Vote Obama!

Posted by: Dan Bernstein at July 23, 2012 09:39 PM (WUcSM)

They tried to convince him to run for governor in the early 80s.  He would have won 70% of the vote.

JoePa was my idol growing up.  This hurts.  It hurts a lot.  Sort of like being told Santa Claus isn't real.  While I wish due process could have been done with Curley and Schultz first, I understand why the NCAA did what it did.

I just wish the NCAA, which generally can't find its ass with both hands, could come up with a way to sanction a university without penalizing the kids who had nothing to do with it.  But, honestly, I can't think of any way either.

So PSU accepts the sanctions.  It had no other choice, and I agree completely.  The only problem I have is vacating Paterno's wins from 1998 to present.  This isn't Bobby Ewing coming out of the shower.  You can put an asterisk next to his name, but he won those games and everyone knows it.

Spent many years in Chicago, and so:
What happens when Obama issues an executive order giving the vote, and automatic registration, to illegals - a few days days before the election?

And backs it up by sending armed DOJ "observers" to every polling place

==============================

Then a bunch of governors with R after their names call out the National Guard to secure the polling places - and the nut-cutting begins

350 I saw two Obama ads in the last three or four days here in Wisconsin on "free" tv.  I don't know who this McdragonFly bumble f*#k is that's making predictions of an easy Obama win here, but he's full of it.  The Obots are running scared... as they should be.  I've seen two or three 2012 Obama/Biden bumber stickers on cars... four years ago you couldn't go out of the house without seeing a hundred of those damn things... I think even democrats (at least the ones that don't receive any "stimulus" or "investment" cash from the public teat) are starting to realize that Obama is a cancer on America and are shying away somewhat... the ultimate question is of course, will they stay home on election day?... righting the wrong that they are responsible for... stay tuned folks... it's gonna be an interesting election.

Posted by: Some guy in Wisconsin at July 23, 2012 06:08 PM (gzdJs)

351 90 Obama ads are in heavy rotation in Massachusetts, and he also appears prominently in the heavy-rotation Elizabeth Warren smoke signals.   After the 1988 Democratic convention, Dukakis went on a week long whistle stop tour. Of Massachusetts. Duh.   My two cents, the ad buys in Illinois and Massachusetts aren't because the polls show the race there is close. It's because the Obama campaign can't imagine a race where they don't have more money than they need-  combined with a payoff from the campaign staff to media associates. It's the Chicago way.

355 I just saw Romney's Olympics quote on another website.  The liberal who posted it wanted to know what was the difference between Romney's quote and Obama's quote.  My response:  Romney wasn't trying to redistribute the medals from the winning Olympians to the runners-up, hangers-on, never-trieds, and envious wannabes.

Posted by: Biancaneve at July 23, 2012 07:41 PM (UaBrT)

Mitt took $1 to cure the SLC Olympics; and $1 as MA Gov.  He'll probably only take $1 for Potus.  He does not care about the money--he's flippin rich and he gives away more every year than he takes in.

Mitt cares PASSIONATELY about America.  He is "on fire" for American exceptionalism.  He has dedicated his soul to the cause of freedom.

His critics will gnash their teeth; howl like demons from Hell itself; lie; defraud; cheat; and perjure themselves--and they SHALL NOT PREVAIL.

Hey, I'd bet on Mitt.

357 "The GOP will not only hold onto the House, but they may actually add a seat or two.

The GOP will take the Senate."

Crikes, this is just depressing as all hell. Why? Because if the above predictions come to pass, I'm almost sure the dickheaded GOP is going to blow it, just like the last time they were in that position.

358 Lil Barry's Roanaoke comments really gave us all the benefit of his real world economic experience. The comments are textbook Marxism on the Marxist Theory of Value. L'il Barry's real world economic experience was in a classroom where he learned Marxist theory, and at his mother's knee, and from Obama, Sr., or Frank Marshall Davis, whoever is more closely related or whoever schtupped Stanley Ann more often. (Bettie Page-esque nude/fetish photo shoots do not by themselves count like schtupping, to be fair.)

We have always been plagued with RINOs, particularly in the Senate.  Whatever other problems the Democrats have, they are able to stand firm.  So they are almost certain to have enough votes to block legislation by filibuster.  Given that there are few Democrats remaining who are not fanatics, I would expect them to dig in and block every effort at repeal of the several pieces of legislation which have been passed.  Getting around that will not be easy, or pretty, and will set examples for future cases which are not good ones.

362 I absolutely love this stuff. Romney is down significantly (only about 2 points in popular vote but by about 55 electoral votes) and yet he's poised to win big! As are apparently every other Republican candidate. The OP is not in touch with reality. He isn't even interested in it. It's called wishcasting.

363 I hope this energy and pointed enthusiasm for transparency, accountability, inventiveness, hard work, opportunity for all, govt-don't-tread-on-me-ism, no-cheating-at-voting, entrepreneurship, and American exceptionalism can get us some new (investigative) media institutions.  The failed ones are losing audience share, but they still "educate" millions in the marxist line.  Our one alternative, Fox News, is pathetic.  I wish that out of the conservative blogging experience, a new enterprise(s) would develop.

The Repubs better be ready to spend some money on a lot of television ads to educate the American people about the stark choices they face.

The Romney government  better open wide up energy production.

The Repubs in the House and Senate better be ready to make some real -time spending cuts, and not the "bull shit" cuts in growth.

Part of Obama's plan depends on how long it takes to change a man from being self sufficient to being dependant. IMHO, the number of days that takes now is a lot less than it was even 5 years ago. Romney will have a very difficult time governing a population of which 25 - 40% cannot / will not survive without the government teat.
