If we postulate the burning, we can presume it will last till that starts.
How far away is that? I dunno, I shouldn't be surprised if it starts this year.

So for the past two hours, NBC has been showing a lengthy cross country ski relay that the United States isn't even hopeful of being competitive in. Of all the events they could be showing, the geniuses at NBC sports programming chose this.
They're not even phoning it in. They might as well as be showing a test pattern.

Probably a more accurate title would be the "War to revenge the attack on Ft. Sumter. "
It has always been my opinion that the war started as a pissing contest that escalated and got out of hand.
Neither side expected the other to be so damn stubborn.

A great deal of the extraconstitutional executive maneuvering in which Obama engages was originally pioneered by Lincoln. Sad to say.
Really, if you start tracing the roots of the modern American "welfare-warfare state", it's startling how many of them lead back to Old Abe.

Kaiser Bill? What an imbecile.
Turns out he'd sent over some saboteurs in 1915 to the US, disguised as homegrown anarchists (America did have some of those). It didn't work (http://tinyurl.com/munhyb4), like the Zimmerman Telegram didn't work. And like sinking the Lusitania was stupid (just board the ship if it's got munitions in it, I mean, come on).
The Kaiser's dirty-tricks project worked a lot better against the Russkies, inflicting Communism on them.
What sucks hardest is that, if the Kaiser hadn't been a complete buffoon, otherwise Germany was in the right in WW1. At least, Germany / Austria had a legitimate beef against the Serbs and the Tsar. But the Kaiser had to keep pissing off the Americans and, well, you know the rest.

Yeah, it was a revelation to me. I went to Lincoln Grade school, and all my life I had heard what a great man Lincoln was.
Oddly enough, my best friend (who is black) was a history major, and he put me on to Lincoln as being a clever schemer who more or less engineered how the war started. Over the years, I learned more and more about Lincoln, and I came away with a very different picture of the man from what I grew up with.
Yup. The start of the Leviathan Federal beast began with Lincoln.

"If you Yankees had stayed home, all of this shit now would not be going on, and YOU would be living in the South."
I always do wonder. I can find blood kin who wore blue and others who wore gray. I am still shocked at the stark violence with which family killed one another in that terrible war.
On the subject of Civil War historiography: people seem to either love or loathe this book:
http://www.amazon.com/When-Course-Human-Events-Secession/dp/0847697223
I'm in the rare middle ground. It certainly veers too far into Lost Cause mythology for my tastes. It is what I would deem not only neoconfederate, but unabashedly so.
However, it also builds a hell of a solid case against Lincoln as having been one of the very worst Presidents in the entire national history, and really the man who tore down and shit upon the Republic as originally conceived and implemented.
It also makes an unsparing economic argument that the supposedly noble motives of the North really came down to money, at bottom. Just money. Nothing more. If they had thought it would have profited them financially to let the South leave peacefully, they'd have allowed it. Even if the South retained its slaves. All about the money.

And we wound up after the Civil War with a united country that grew into the most exceptional place on the planet, with a government umatched anywhere.
That country is still here, under the layer of filth deposited on it.
What it was will be again--time will see to it.
Once unleashed, the precepts and ideals it was founded on can never be destroyed.
I believe that with every fiber of my being.
Perhaps all here will not live long enough to see the true redurgence of America, but it will happen.
Never doubt that.

With respect, consider the source. Lincoln ended up freeing the slaves, and incidentally also got a lot of fighting-age Southerners killed (the survivors joined the Klan); Lincoln became a hero to the black population as a result.
It's open to question whether Lincoln wanted the war he got, or a war at all. Lincoln certainly didn't want a war where Virginia would be on the Confederate side (he'd have been an idiot to want that war).

I've heard that theory too, but as far as i'm concerned it has baggage of kookism attached to it. Any theory that wants to put the blame on "Northern Bankers" (possibly Jewish) strikes me as straying into kook territory.
It sounds too much like the Bildebergers, or the Rothchilds, and the various other conspiracy theories floating around out there.
That being said, I do not doubt that economics was a powerful motivating force for both sides.
Of course, demonstrable facts reign supreme, and if the man has built a good case, i'm willing to look at it.

Kaiser Wilhelm really liked[/i the US. Called his son "Bill," and affected a kind of cowboy-movie version of American mannerisms. Which no doubt pissed him off all the more when he saw us slipping into the sphere of accursed Albion.
German saboteurs weren't total losers. There was the Black Tom dock explosion, reputed to have broken every window in New York City. I remember people who were alive at the time relating how petrified everyone was of German spies. Wilson created a whole civilian snoop squad to watch for them, and for the "anarchists" who really weren't anarchists at all.
I think the current academic truism on the Zimmerman Cable was that is was a British ruse to keep their high-tech American explosives coming. The cable from Yerp was tapped where it came up for air at landsend, and the filthy English not only knew about everything first, but could make it say whatever they wanted.
The fact that Mexico behaves as if the offer were still good? We don't talk about that.

From my reading of history, I think the South had a right to secede if they wanted. I've always found it Ironic that Lincoln's most famous speech refers specifically to the year the US seceded from England.
(Four Score and Seven years ago (1863-87=1776)
The Declaration of Independence articulated the right of people to separate themselves from a government they no longer felt represented their interests.
It's rather odd that Lincoln specifically referred to this event.

Ask a letter carrier about rotating days off and the holiday force-in system.
Nobody hates holidays worse than letter carriers. You never get a 3-day weekend out of them, and there's an extra day of mail waiting on Tuesday.
The Martin Luther King trade was pretty good for them, though. Stores quit having "White Sales."

Funny thing the last couple days--I run Firefox with Adblock and NoScript and notice that the site loads all kind of dumb little things that these addons are supposed to kill.
Just like it didn't matter. Frequently, it takes several minutes to load any site, especially after prolonged time logged on. Rebooting will stop it for a while, but the problem recurs.
Anyone else have this?

Won't get rolling till about 10:00AM.
Probably too late for Breakfast.
But,Mrs VIA is off Tuesday, and Little VIA has school.
Could give us the early start for breakfast we are looking for.

if we do Tuesday, we could drop Little VIA at school at 0750.
And then head right to a Diner.
Would that work?
