How far away is that?  I dunno,  I shouldn't be surprised if it starts this year.

22 I don't get cable, so in order to watch the Olympics, I must watch network broadcasting.

So for the past two hours, NBC has been showing a lengthy cross country ski relay that the United States isn't even hopeful of being competitive in. Of all the events they could be showing, the geniuses at NBC sports programming chose this.

They're not even phoning it in. They might as well as be showing a test pattern.

61 "Lincoln was a tyrant."

A great deal of the extraconstitutional executive maneuvering in which Obama engages was originally pioneered by Lincoln. Sad to say.

Really, if you start tracing the roots of the modern American "welfare-warfare state", it's startling how many of them lead back to Old Abe.

65 Probably a more accurate title would be the "War to revenge the attack on Ft. Sumter. " SC had left the union and asked Lincoln to remove his troops from SC sovereign territory. They were given time to leave. Lincoln told SC to go fuck itself. SC troops then destroyed Ft Sumter, but allowed the troops to surrender. The North immediately invaded VA at Bulls Run, where they got their asses kicked and they ran back to DC. The South never entered Union territory until Gettysburg. If you Yankees had stayed home, all of this shit now would not be going on, and YOU would be living in the South. Are you glad you won?

77 I missed this on the book-thread but:

Kaiser Bill? What an imbecile.

Turns out he'd sent over some saboteurs in 1915 to the US, disguised as homegrown anarchists (America did have some of those). It didn't work (http://tinyurl.com/munhyb4), like the Zimmerman Telegram didn't work. And like sinking the Lusitania was stupid (just board the ship if it's got munitions in it, I mean, come on).

The Kaiser's dirty-tricks project worked a lot better against the Russkies, inflicting Communism on them.

What sucks hardest is that, if the Kaiser hadn't been a complete buffoon, otherwise Germany was in the right in WW1. At least, Germany / Austria had a legitimate beef against the Serbs and the Tsar. But the Kaiser had to keep pissing off the Americans and, well, you know the rest.

Yeah, it was a revelation to me.  I went to Lincoln Grade school, and all my life I had heard what a great man Lincoln was.

Oddly enough, my best friend (who is black) was a history major, and he put me on to Lincoln as being a clever schemer who more or less engineered how the war started.   Over the years, I learned more and more about Lincoln, and I came away with a very different picture of the man from what I grew up with.

Yup.  The start of the Leviathan Federal beast began with Lincoln.

104 My sister did, last year. The wrist corsage, instead of the kind made to be pinned to the chest, spares everyone some awkwardness. Posted by: Jenny Hates Her Phone at February I hadda really awkward moment at my first prom. my date was wearing a strapless dress and I was having a some trouble pinning her corsage on. Where do you put your hand without touching too much, how far down can you put your hand so you can get a good grip and everything. I found, and my advice is, that it is easier if instead of trying to pin the corsage on by putting a finger or two behind the dress it is better if you simply come up from below.

I always do wonder. I can find blood kin who wore blue and others who wore gray. I am still shocked at the stark violence with which family killed one another in that terrible war.

On the subject of Civil War historiography: people seem to either love or loathe this book:

http://www.amazon.com/When-Course-Human-Events-Secession/dp/0847697223

I'm in the rare middle ground. It certainly veers too far into Lost Cause mythology for my tastes. It is what I would deem not only neoconfederate, but unabashedly so.

However, it also builds a hell of a solid case against Lincoln as having been one of the very worst Presidents in the entire national history, and really the man who tore down and shit upon the Republic as originally conceived and implemented.

It also makes an unsparing economic argument that the supposedly noble motives of the North really came down to money, at bottom. Just money. Nothing more. If they had thought it would have profited them financially to let the South leave peacefully, they'd have allowed it. Even if the South retained its slaves. All about the money.

That country is still here, under the layer of filth deposited on it.

Once unleashed, the precepts and ideals it was founded on can never be destroyed.

With respect, consider the source. Lincoln ended up freeing the slaves, and incidentally also got a lot of fighting-age Southerners killed (the survivors joined the Klan); Lincoln became a hero to the black population as a result.

It's open to question whether Lincoln wanted the war he got, or a war at all. Lincoln certainly didn't want a war where Virginia would be on the Confederate side (he'd have been an idiot to want that war).

I've heard that theory too, but as far as i'm concerned it has baggage of kookism attached to it.  Any theory that wants to put the blame on "Northern Bankers"  (possibly Jewish)  strikes me as straying into kook territory.

It sounds too much like the Bildebergers, or the Rothchilds, and the various other conspiracy theories floating around out there.

That being said, I do not doubt that economics was a powerful motivating force for both sides.

Kaiser Wilhelm really liked[/i the US. Called his son "Bill," and affected a kind of cowboy-movie version of American mannerisms. Which no doubt pissed him off all the more when he saw us slipping into the sphere of accursed Albion.

German saboteurs weren't total losers. There was the Black Tom dock explosion, reputed to have broken every window in New York City. I remember people who were alive at the time relating how petrified everyone was of German spies. Wilson created a whole civilian snoop squad to watch for them, and for the "anarchists" who really weren't anarchists at all.

I think the current academic truism on the Zimmerman Cable was that is was a British ruse to keep their high-tech American explosives coming. The cable from Yerp was tapped where it came up for air at landsend, and the filthy English not only knew about everything first, but could make it say whatever they wanted.

The fact that Mexico behaves as if the offer were still good? We don't talk about that.

166 One of the Met Office’s most senior experts yesterday made a dramatic intervention in the climate change debate by insisting there is no link between the storms that have battered Britain and global warming. Mat Collins, a Professor in climate systems at Exeter University, said the storms have been driven by the jet stream – the high-speed current of air that girdles the globe – which has been ‘stuck’ further south than usual. Professor Collins told The Mail on Sunday: ‘There is no evidence that global warming can cause the jet stream to get stuck in the way it has this winter. If this is due to climate change, it is outside our knowledge.’ His statement carries particular significance because he is an internationally acknowledged expert on climate computer models and forecasts, and his university post is jointly funded by the Met Office. Prof Collins is also a senior adviser – a ‘co-ordinating lead author’ – for the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). His statement appears to contradict Met Office chief scientist Dame Julia Slingo.

From my reading of history, I think the South had a right to secede if they wanted.  I've always found it Ironic that Lincoln's most famous speech refers specifically to the year the US seceded from England.

(Four Score and Seven years ago (1863-87=1776)

The Declaration of Independence articulated the right of people to separate themselves from a government they no longer felt represented their interests.

It's rather odd that Lincoln specifically referred to this event.

179 Maybe the USPS got a holiday on George's bday but that was it.

Ask a letter carrier about rotating days off and the holiday force-in system.
Nobody hates holidays worse than letter carriers. You never get a 3-day weekend out of them, and there's an extra day of mail waiting on Tuesday.

The Martin Luther King trade was pretty good for them, though. Stores quit having "White Sales."

Funny thing the last couple days--I run Firefox with Adblock  and NoScript and notice that the site loads all kind of dumb little things that these addons are supposed to kill.

Just like it didn't matter.  Frequently, it takes several minutes to load  any site, especially after prolonged time logged on.  Rebooting will stop it for a while, but the problem recurs.

  Anyone else have this?

184 The North immediately invaded VA at Bulls Run, where they got their asses kicked and they ran back to DC. The South never entered Union territory until Gettysburg. Probably already been said, but Antietam (Sharpsburg to you), not Gettysburg.

Posted by: Weirddave at February 16, 2014 05:36 PM (N/cFh)

185 You Lincoln haters make me laugh. If Honest Abe the Tyrant had just allowed the southern states to break way from the Union, the US would not be a superpower today with such  a high standard of living. It would be at least two countries always at each other's throats. Maybe more than two. Would Jeff Davis or whoever was in charge have looked kindly if a couple of states from the Confederacy wanted to later rejoin the Union--or form yet another nation? No, they would have fought to prevent that. What if Spain retook Florida, or Mexico took back the southwest?  What if France started making eyes at its old possessions? The South would not have survived and if it had, it would have been an Aristocracy run by a slave-owning landed gentry class and the poor, non-slave-holding white majority would have been a permanent peasantry. The South would look a lot like South America.

188 You Southern Supremacists think it would have worked out so smoothly for the South if they had been allowed secede from the Union. It would not have. Also, Southern politicians of the 20th century are also responsible in part  for the government of today being the blood-sucking leviathan it is today. They were all Democrats true, but they loved them some big gubmint along with their racism and grits.

194 161 >>>Below the Mason-Dixon line, does not count. Maryland would have joined the South if it could have. Yep. Lincoln locked up the legislature before they could vote on secession. The red and white button cross on the state flag? Secession colors. The whole course of the past 150 years would be vastly different. The state song calls Lincoln a Tyrant. And I'm iffy on Md. Yes, the legislature would have likely seceded, but that doesn't mean all the people were for it. Tennessee did secede, but the majority of its population opposed secession. Maryland didn't exactly throw open it's arms in 62 when Lee invaded, nor did Kentucky roll out the red carpet for Braxton Bragg that same year ( or does that not count as the South invading Yankeeland either?)

I have kept FNC & other news off and have only been watching Showtime or something on demand, or TCM or MGM. There was a Dead Like Me movie on MGM or doubtfully TCM this past week at 6 am or earlier. I have it on my DVR to watch.

if we do Tuesday, we could drop Little VIA at school at 0750.

212 Andy Canuck, Are you a fan of Shameless? My older brother told me it was great & it got better each season. I saw part of one of this seasonÂ’s episodes & watched all from beginning. I love it now but the past two episodes have been grim & not much to laugh at.

Posted by: Carol at February 16, 2014 06:35 PM (z4WKX)

213 No, I've never seen Shameless. It doesn't even sound familiar as a title. I guess I'll take a look at IMDB.

214 Andy, It is on Showtime. I cancelled all of the other premium channels except Showtime. It is on Sundays at 9 pm.

216 I see that there are two versions around---a British and an American one. It looks like a Canadian specialty channel, Showcase, might carry it but I'm pretty busy as it is. 218 Re: 190, I remember reading one in jr high but don't remember the title. The pivital event was Grant's horse throwing him resulting in a fatal head injury. It was quite thought provoking. Had the south and north both joining forces in WWI and WWII. Woodrow Wilson was president of the confederacy in WWI. That's about all I can recall, but it was a good read. Wish I could remember the title, probably would re-read it.

219 190 So. Anyone know a good alt hist novel where the South successfully seceded? Posted by: Votermom at February 16, 2014 09:43 PM (GSIDW) You'll probably never see this, but Harry Turtledove wrote an 11 novel series that goes from the 2nd war between the states (20 years after Confederacy won the first one) through WWII. It's called the timeline 191 series because the pivotal event that changed was that Lee's courier did NOT lose his special order 191 on 09/10/1962. Great read, but it's NOT a happy world compared to our own. The first book is called How Few Remain.

Posted by: Weirddave at February 16, 2014 09:19 PM (N/cFh)

220 1862. Missed it by that much.

Posted by: Weirddave at February 16, 2014 09:19 PM (N/cFh)

221 Scont, I think this is the book you mean:If the South won Gettysburg by Mark Nesbitt. Grant's death was part of it, yes, but the pivotal event was Lee following Longstreet's tactics after the second day at Gettysburg, and I think he's got the outcome right. I think Turtledove has a better take on what life on the North American continent would have been like following a Confederate victory. As I said, it's not pretty.

Posted by: Weirddave at February 16, 2014 09:28 PM (N/cFh)

222 219 You'll probably never see this, ... -- Hah! Joke's on you WeirdDave! The Eye sees all! Thanks for the recs!
