Early Vote Ohio Update
— CAC

Currently, total early vote is 639,701 statewide. This includes absentees and in-person voting.
Out of 5.7 to 5.77 million likely total votes.

Which pegs the early vote at 11% of overall.

Which means SurveyUSA's release this week is just as skewed as Marist and PPP's last week.

So, another blow to the "18%"

3 I could vote early. But I won't - I want there to be a ton of Romney votes on the ACTUAL day so they stand around and scratch their heads and say "Wha' the f--k???"

5 As I recall, early voting was already over 20% of the vote in OH by this time in 2008.  Since most early voters are Democrats, that bodes poorly for them.

10 New tinfoilhat theory:

The polls/media will show a really close race through the rest of "early voting" -- and then suddenly shift their samples and declare Obama the easy winner over the last few days before "in-person voting".

The idea would be to motivate early voters (predominantly dems) and then discourage voting when most Republicans and Independents go to the polls, on Election Day.

They see the cracks in the dam, the water starting to shoot through, large pieces of concrete being hurled downstream, and all the townsfolk heading to higher ground.  Only the die-hard lefties and true believers are still standing there screaming 'All is well! All is well!"

22 We voted yesterday in Columbus, and the place was pretty busy. A couple of things I thought were interesting: We were the only white people voting at that time and even though Ohio is a voter ID state, we didn't get asked for ID. We filled out our card with the last 4 of our social and our name and address and gave the card to the woman at the computer. When my father got his id out she said they didn't need it, the info was on the screen. My husband asked where the picture was, but she said it doesn't have a picture of the person, just the voter information. Then she sent us on our way. I could have been any female in Ohio, including my dead mother and voted. I am going to contact the attorney general's office on Monday for clarification on this because this feels funny.

31 Fuckin Ohio. I lived there from age 5 through 19, so essentially "grew up" in Ohio. When I was in junior high, as it was called then, Newsweek or Time did a story on the town where we were, Cuyahoga Falls, a sort of bedroom community adjacent Akron and south of Cleveland. With a then-population of about 25,000, the story in the newsmagazine was all about how white the place was, with no racial diversity at all, and how the secret handshake system of the real estate business kept it that way.

OK, ready. I think you peeps are overdoing this idea that Dems are depressed and aren't going to turn out. Libs  never realize  the error of their ways. They will vote, they are just keeping quiet about it. That's because they know they are stubbornly voting against what's best for the country. But liberals don't care about the country, they care about their ideology and their self-loathing.

The pollsters are oversampling, but perhaps not as much as you think. Romney doing OK,  but this is no blowout, it's close.

119 Time for some clear eyes and some clear heads. Barring some major scandal or October surprise (which our cynical nation has already baked into its calculations) O has lost. When you are 18 days away from a general election, and you cannot get over 50% as the incumbent, you're done. I think the Gallup poll has this election about right at this point (we can talk Nate Silver back and forth for hours, but I'll say one cryptic thing about Nate which will explain a lot, if you get it: Derek Jeter and PECOTA, buddy). Guys in Chicago and Boston who have been around the block multiple times know this. You have to give to Axelrod et al--they had a very bad deal going in as an incumbent with 8% unemployment and tepid GNP growth, but they chose the only strategy they had, which was to cut down Romney. As Stuart Stevens was saying to much abuse, it was all going out the window at the first debate when people realized R didn't have horns on his head. It did. The only thing left is a Hail Mary Monday night to try to make R look like a foreign policy dunce. That will likely not work because (a) R is not a dunce, and (b) O was pretty unskilled when he took over, and it shows 4 years later. So you're sitting in Chicago, the October surprise and any economic numbers are already baked into the electorate, so what do you do? Normally, when this happens, you try to help the party. This is all about the down ballot now. Trying to keep the Senate, and preserve O Care. Problem is, O and the DNC don't get along. DNC has no cash left. O isn't going to give it to them, since he'll spend every penny on himself in OH, WI, NV, NH (and maybe PA and MI, ha, ha). Look for a stealth $5 million (from a weird PAC, likely) to Akin to run ads in MO detailing McCaskill's husband running a corruption scheme out of the Senate Dining Room. Therefore, the big surprise on Wed 11/8 will be that the repubs got the Senate by something like 52-53 seats. Perhaps 54 if Smith (PA) and McMahon (CT) pull it off. It's all over but the screaming.

195 The sidebar thing about elections is pretty uninformative. It's relying on Gallup only, and two of the races involved major third party candidates. The others are all within the polls' margin of error.

Nothing has changed since Romney made himself viable again with the first debate. I think he has a very slight edge but still has to win Ohio.

If he wins on Monday, he will be the favorite. I do think undecideds are going to break for him, and I expect his ground game to be equal to Bush's 2004 efforts. That's against the Obama media and Democratic cheating in their strongholds.

Also, someone can pull some kind of surprise, but I really think Romney is the most immune to this of any candidate we could ask for.

I do not see an easy Obama win. As of today, seat of my pants, 10 percent Romney comfortable win, 40 percent Romney close win, 50 percent Obama close win. If it's a nail-biter, you have to give that edge to Obama because of all the shenanigans we've seen lately (Minnesota, for example).

Will revise based on whether Gallup tightens and Monday night's outcome.

225 I know I already linked this piece yesterday, but the number of volunteer offices is something I had not seen reported before: Plus, The Daily Beast notes the differences in the number of volunteer offices present in some battleground states — another potential indicator that Obama’s policies and message are being hammered home more diligently in more contentious localities: In Ohio, 122 Obama local HQs compared to 40 for Romney. In Florida, the Obama campaign has 102 local HQs versus 48 for Romney. And in Virginia, a more even split—47 for Obama compared to 29 for Romney. [...] Colorado has 61 Obama offices compared to 14 for Romney. And Paul Ryan’s home state of Wisconsin has 68 Obama HQs as opposed to 24 for the Romney-Ryan ticket. According to this analysis, Obama’s team may be looking to work in areas that were previously lost in the 2008 race. With experience under the campaign’s belt, there may be a bit of an advantage to realizing the weak spots. And with more people working on the ground, patching some of the holes and closing in on areas that are naturally more favorably to Romney and Republicans could sway states and make key differences at the polls. There is also a big section in this article on Ohio. HERE ARE THE 4 SURPRISE SIGNS THAT OBAMA COULD STILL WIN THE 2012 ELECTION http://tinyurl.com/9t2aupc

227 195 Nah. It won't be that close. O has not been close to 50% in OH. Also, if you look at the remaining battlegrounds (OH, IA, NV) they all went Repub in the last 3/4 cycles. I'm not even including WI, but the recall really helped them and it will be close, but probably R. O at this time in 2008 was over 50% in a lot of these states. Not this time. He is the incumbent, not the challenger--that is a big deal. It's also not 2004. Kerry never led in 2004 after late Sept, and definitely not in Oct.

239 Even if you estimate the Ohio turnout   a  little  lower than 2008(it was about 5.7 million)   you still wouldn't get 18%.  You would have to estimate the number of voters at about 3.5  million  for Ohio this year.  The totals may not be all that of  2008,  but I doubt they will be that low----unless people just don't give a sh*t   this time around.

241 IIRC, that "last four numbers of social security number" is used as an alternate to the state driver's license as ID -- which in Ohio has at least the secretary's intention of being verified, and counted later. That's not the same as this year's special early voting.

In a vast poll-worker training class last week, old-timers were a little dazed at the turnout, and had no other theory than that this will be a big election. Several days later came the court ruling on extra days of early voting, with no mention of ID or verification procedures. That has all the trappings of the Fix being In. Watch bus traffic.

In a county that is slightly to the left of Tverskoy Administrative District, the overwhelming majority of new volunteers were pretty obviously Dem (sleeping in the class, rode the bus there, questions on the bake-sale rule), but some R's had been recruited off the voter rolls by the Board of Elections just in order to have enough for the required 2-party representation at the tables and in voter assistance. Spooky.

McDonalds appears to have phased out the steak, egg and cheese bagel. I only eat breakfast there if I'm on the way to a match, but that was about as much food as can be held in one hand, and the only thing they offered that competed on even ground with a diner breakfast.

Reminds me of the old joke.  Billy comes in a sees Dad humping away and Mom yelling at the top of her lungs.  He runs out of the room.  Dad goes and tries to tell Billy it was all OK.  Mom was fine.

So about a week later Billy is over at his grandmothers house, she being a little senile, Billy jumps her like his dad had.  She starts yelling and moaning.

Dad runs in and says, Bill what are you doing?

Billy, says, It not so funny when I am fucking YOUR mom, is it?

Here all day, news at 11

268 Interested Party: I hope you are right and am very hopeful myself, but I'm keeping hope in check with realism.

Romney *should* win, but whether he will remains to be seen. He needs another debate performance on Monday like in the first. Maybe he can get Obama to blow up because he's clearly under President Boo-boo's skin now.

I've contributed and have signed up. My state's not a swing state, though, so I guess I'll be doing phone work.

269 @257 Could it have been Husted, the Sec of State? He'd fit the "seemed like a good guy" profile a little better, although I can't say whether he's up to reaping the whirlwind he's sown.

270 The funny thing is that the 8 year old came in and said "I know what you guys were doing." and proceeded to call it a special hug.

You might want to keep a very close eye on him if he starts playing team sports.  Way too much special hugging going on there.

273 As far as I'm concerned, all will be forgiven in Nevada if O-dumfuck loses the election and Harry Reid becomes Senate Minority Leader in January.

If that happens, well then, we'll all be singing a happy tune.  And I'll never be able to eat pudding again.

Today's Gallup update - Romney still up 6; up 2 among registered voters; Obama's net job approval down another point.

Probably really plus 4 or so nationwide, giving as much credence as they deserve to other pollsters.

278 I'm not voting in a swing state myself, but I'm still encouraged because ...hey, who knows? In wave elections, states get turned that you never expect. Illinois did elect a Republican senator in 2010 and almost elected a Republican Governor.

And besides, Bob Dold is in a close race and we need to keep his seat.I don't even know what he's polling at.

285 mail trucks are full of Dems voting early and often I was trying to explain the Franken election to my teenage daughter and her friend the other day, with the ballots that were "found" in someone's trunk. They couldn't believe it. It's also stunning to me how politically aware and conservative my teenage kids and their friends are. Even 15 and 16 year olds understand how screwed they are, at least the smart ones. OTOH, the neighbor across our fence calls himself a socialist, which, based on his idiot parents, surprises me not at all.

290 I would guess that Allred has scrounged a disgruntled x-Mormon from Romney's former congregation when he was bishop or stake president. Sins of moral turpitude require going to local bishop for counseling (unless you just hide or drop out) and sexual sins are considered grevious. Just an educated guess. And, I smell desperation. Not to get cocky but it would be ironic if this was the stunt that ended Gloria's ambulance chasing career.

291 Can anyone explain to me the news stories about early voting in Iowa and Wisconsin? Despite close state-wide polling, it is claimed Obama leads early voting in these states by 30 PERCENT! Is that legit? I have been very confident of a Romney win but this kind of thing scares me a little.

293

Maybe Gloria   has nothing and is just enjoying the rumors and making us all   nervous.

And,  I think in  Iowa they are just projecting what voters may be voting based on registeration.  Also,  the ever reliable phone interviews by   polling places may have something to do   with the vote rumors.

295 Regarding the field offices, I greet that info as a data point of questionable worth:

1) We have to rely on the Daily Beast because it's not something to check for ourselves.

2) We don't know where *they* got it--and perhaps each campaign reported those numbers. We don't know how each campaign counts such an office.

3) Hence, we don't know the unit of what we're measuring or whether the measurement is accurate. It's like comparing nuclear strength during the Cold War based on missiles versus MIRVs.

The data means something, but we can't judge what it means.

301 Actually not. When I left the lily white compound of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, to go off to university, I found myself in another zone of no racial diversity, the epicenter being at East 105th and Euclid Avenue, in Cleveland's east side. Today it looks like Dresden after the firebombing, the only thing left standing being the huge complex of the Cleveland Clinic.
