Has it really been that long? It seemed like yesterday that Serbs, Bosnian-Serbs, Bosnian-Muslims, Bosnian Croats, and Croats were killing each other. All of the Serbian and Bosnian Serb leaders wanted for war crimes have either died or were captured and tried by the ICC. Including Former Serbian President Slobodon Milošević , former President of Republika Srpska Radovan Karadžić, and most recently the Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladić .
Few if any of the Croat, Bosnian Croat, or Muslim Croat criminals have been brought to justice. Just a reminder kids, if youÂ’re going to commit atrocities in a war, be sure to win it.
The dissolution of Yugoslavia and subsequent wars has always been of great interest to me. If youÂ’re interested in learning more, I highly recommend a book called Yugoslavia: Death of a Nation. ItÂ’s a little one sided against the Serbs, but it does give a detailed description of collapse of the Communist Yugoslav government. The Impossible Country Journey is a great read as well.

The Tax Foundation came to different conclusions in 2009 in that AK was the least burdensome, NV, SD, and then TN. Interesting to see the methodologies involved.
Also of note. WY at 47th in the Tax Foundation study, that that their corporate tax is 0%. TN is at 6.5%.

Thanks - I will check those out. My kid's in Kosovo mostly to see that the remaining Serbian factions and muslims don't off each other. At least till his tour is over. Then they can do whatever they want. Which apparently what they want is to kill each other.

Makes them feel good in the abstract. But Portland, Santa Fe, and especially Vermont, are lefty magnets, and not notably "diverse." What they say, and what they do, tend not to resemble each other much.

BTW, what is it with women and strip clubs nowadays. I walked into one last night, and it was filled with women. I haven't lived in the city for about 30 years.. but it is one of the easiest cities to live in. It it set out very logically in a grid aligned north/south and east/west, with bus routes no further away than a quarter mile in any direction.
Chicagoans are unpretentious and like to have fun. There's a park with a baseball diamond (or two) in every neighborhood and softball (especially the 16 inch Clincher variety) leagues are popular everywhere. And there's at least one bar on every block on every busy street.
Politics is not as big a deal as y'all make of it.. it is an accepted way of life.. and most of the Democrats, especially the unions, are a lot more conservative than you would think - they simply vote Dem religiously because that's where the power/jobs are.
As far as U-Hauls going in.. a lot of the blighted parts of the city have become "gentrified" over the last 2 decades. Neighborhoods you would not be found dead in (or would be) in the 80's are now high-end enclaves of the yuppies.
There's still a lot of bad 'hoods.. but it's an ok city to live in, if you want to live in a city.. young folks like it, at least.. me? I like the far out 'burbs where it's nice and quiet these days.

Thanks chemjeff. I was pretty happy I managed to get my act together considering my brain is still in Hawaii on a lounge chair with a pina colada. Thankfully I had bought the Easter candy BEFORE we left. So the boy got his M&Ms after having given them up for Lent. He did much better than me, didn't have a single M&M. I failed at giving up cussing. I think there were some days I cussed so much that I would've made a sailor blush.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. Milosevic and the rest deserved to be tried, however so did many Croats and Bosnian Muslims.
The Croats were protected by their benefactor Germany. (Whom they eagerly allied with in WW 2 as well.)
The Bosian Muslims took the brunt of the atrocities committed by both sides, so they were given a bit of a pass as well.

From Insty, about the high price of gas. Although it totally ignores the weakness of the US dollar it does highlight some of our structural problems:
The US is divided into five oil districts, which were originally designed to ensure energy security during World War II. Things have certainly evolved since then, but the districts remain less connected than you might think. Crude oil cannot necessarily flow from one side of the country to the other or from one producing region to another refining area. The system’s disconnectedness means that refiners in different regions are forced to pay whatever the price may be for the crude oil they can access – and those prices differ significantly.
East-Coast refiners have traditionally relied on imported oil from Europe and West Africa, which means they pay Brent pricing for most of their crude. As such, BrentÂ’s surging price has dealt a blow to East-Coast refiners, hitting several so hard that they are shutting down. No fewer than four refineries serving the East Coast are going or have gone offline since 2010, eliminating almost half of the gasoline previously supplied to the US Northeast. Knowing that, high gasoline prices in the Northeast start to make a bit more sense: RefinersÂ’ costs have been sky high, and refinery shutdowns have eliminated a huge chunk of supply.
Similarly, refiners on the West Coast receive some supply from Alaska but depend on internationally priced crude for the bulk of their input. Their need to pay Brent pricing explains why gas prices in California are regularly among the highest in the nation.
At the other end of the spectrum are refiners in the Midwest. The oil hub at Cushing, Oklahoma, is being increasingly inundated with crude oil as production ramps up in North DakotaÂ’s Bakken formation and in CanadaÂ’s oil sands. Crude from both of those rapidly-expanding oil regions flows primarily to Cushing, where refineries process as much as they can. Those refiners are able to buy at WTI pricing, which has held a roughly 20% discount to Brent crude for the last year. That helps keep gasoline prices in the Midwest a little lower.
However, Midwest refineries are generally designed to process light, sweet oil, which means they can handle output from the Bakken but are not up to processing heavy oil from the sands. Oil-sands crude needs to go to the Gulf Coast, where an army of sophisticated refineries are thirsty for heavy oil. All that is lacking is a pipeline to connect supply with demand, but at the moment there is no such pipe; thus, the supply glut at Cushing has discounted heavy oil significantly. Western Canada Select, the benchmark crude oil coming out of CanadaÂ’s oil sands, closed at US$74.73 per barrel on March 5, a 30% discount to WTI and a 40% discount to Brent.
There is cheap oil available in the United States. You just have to be able to transport the crude from Cushing to your personal refinery to take advantage of it.
One final element is making matters worse: Refineries are currently starting to shift to producing spring-summer gasoline blends, which are lighter and therefore usually cost about 10¢ more per gallon than fall-winter blends. And this year, the quick refinery shutdowns needed to enact the seasonal shift are creating slight supply gaps because some of the “swing” refineries that usually help bridge the gap are no longer operating. For example, the Hovensa refinery in the US Virgin Islands – a joint venture between Hess Corp. (NYSE.HES) and Petroleos de Venezuela – used to produce extra volume during the seasonal transition, but it was closed down a few weeks ago after losing $1.3 billion over the last three years.

I mostly lurk,but have noticed lately how many fellow Jewish morons there are - it's a pretty wonderful feeling. And it's quite heartening considering how liberal my fellow American Jews tend to be.
My (Christian) co-blogger did a really moving post the other day noting the confluence of Good Friday and the beginning of Pesach (http://tinyurl.com/7kzk3z4 if you're interested). It really hit home this year: my 92 year old aunt (my late mom's older sister) is dying, and it was blatantly obvious to me that she's been waiting until all her kids and grand-kids came in for seder. I suspect it won't be long now.
Sorry to be all maudlin - what I'm trying to say is Thanks to all the morons and 'ettes of all persuasions who entertain and enlighten me, inspire (lookin' at you, SoS) and amuse me.

Since she's doing her rotation for medical school, I'd assume that it was a random hospital assignment. A friend of mine went through the same thing with his wife. She was an AF Reservist and got sent to El Paso to do her residency for pediatrics.

It is mostly veggies, particularly tomatoes, potatoes, corn and green beans, since that's what the boys will eat, but also some pumpkins and even a watermelon this year, because that looks like fun, and some peppers because I cook with them. There are some flowers around the edges, particularly marigolds to keep the rabbits out, but this is a productive garden, not just for looks.
If you don't fertilize, what do your plants eat?

There was an interesting thing I heard about the movie. Apparently an astronomer went off in an article about how after the awesome scene of DiCaprio dying and she looks up at the stars those are not the stars she would have seen. So what did Cameron do for this rerelease? He went back and put in the correct night sky for that time of year and part of the world.

And I fertilize, but not with cow doo or granular mixes I like straight up compost and wood ashes. Too many weeds with the cow dookey. I have no real argument against the granular fertilizers per se, I just like the results I get with compost overall. It's better for the soil in the long run; the balance can get thrown off with the granulars, although probably not really enough to matter.
But your soil is improved in many ways with compost, helps with the texture, etc.

Gerry "Bubba" Watson is the 2012 Masters Champion. A damn entertaining Masters. That shot he made on the 10th hole during the playoffs was sick. Amazing shot. My maiden last name was a beaut. It was entertaining to watch a new teacher work their way down the rollcall. They would get to "Martinez" or nearabouts and then freeze. Their eyes would goggle slightly. Then they would take a deep breath.. and I'd call out "Here!" before they said anything. The only time a stranger said it correctly at first sight, the stranger turned out to be a refugee from Bosnia. And since he actually said it with precise correctness of accent and stress, it still wasn't the way I said it myself.
There was no hesitation of should I take my husband's name. I ran to embrace it, even though IT almost never gets correctly pronounced at first sight either, because at least it doesn't physically paralyze anybody. With my parents now dead, my maiden name has completely died out in these here United States -- even though I have a brother in Virginia, because he legally excised the more confusing letters from the damn thing decades ago.

Depends on hat you're using. For stuff like Espoma you want to work it in when you till/plant. Some slow dissolve pellets can be thrown on the surface at or slightly after planting. Read the bag for help.

The only strip club experience I ever enjoyed was at the Coronet Club, a coed strip joint in Atlanta back in the ''90's. I went with m my hippie chick friend, who is an ESL teacher, and four of her students: Two hot Thai chicks (well, one was for sure a gal) and two guys from Saudi Arabia. It was a BYOB club, and the Saudis came prepared. They were buying table dances for everyone all night. The crowd was about 50/50 male/female, and none of the air of desperation and menace which seems to waft through regular strip clubs.
Not that I disagree with your advice, just that this was the only time I ever walked into a strip club with a woman, and the only time I ever took a woman home from a strip club. Never been back to a strip club since, because the bar's too high now...that, and the hippie chick ESL teacher got me married to one of her students a couple of years later.

Total crap shoot here but avoid the expensive stuff. Dennis Prager has said on multiple occasions that after trying almost every cigar available he still likes the moderately priced ones.
Other than that, use your nose. Generally, the ones that smell nice to your schnoz will be a decent match to your palate.

I'm not really on board with the "cook for your dogs" thing, too much trouble, but one time I had some extra beef liver, and had run out of possible ways to cook it so that I would like it (can't be done, I guess), so I cut it up into little pieces and put it into the dehydrator that I use to make beef jerky.
Never saw dogs so excited to get a treat. Plus, they can smell it from several feet away.

Yeah I'm aware of it. Its a tone deaf response of "see we listened" but they didn't actually listen. Its going to provide "clarity" which is bullshit since the only clarity is that yup you've fucked over the galaxy. And here SPOILER SPOILER
SPOILER: The biggest piece of shit about the ending to me is that in the first two games you have a pretty clear main objective. First game is stop Saren and Sovreign. That is the main goal with the Paragon path being to rescue the Council and earn the other races respect and secure humanity's place in the galaxy, and the Renegade option is to let them die and basically take a position of power for humanity.
In the second game the main objective is clear. Stop the threat of the Collectors on human colonies. The Paragon end is to completely destroy their base to put an end to them. The Renegade path is to kill them but leave the base intact so that you can exploit its technology.
And then comes the third game. The main objective is again to stop the Reapers from culling the galaxy. But you also have the subplot of making sure that the Illusive man does not take control of the reapers too. And then you get to the ending. Where the Paragon ending is for you to do what you have spent at least 1/3 of the entire game trying to stop the Illusive man himself from doing. Or there's the Renegade ending which is to destroy the Reapers, just like you did the Collectors to save the galaxy which will stop them and. But its pretty obvious that Bioware realized this is the way everyone would take so they stuck in bullshit about how you would also wipe out all other artificial intelligence in the galaxy. Or if you are lucky you get the Special Green ending, which involves you distributing your consciousness to everything in the galaxy, making everything out there techno-organic life and ending the cycle by essentially forcing your will onto all life in the galaxy. Oh yeah and in all instances all mass relays are destroyed. The entire reason large scale interstellar travel is capable and no one has ever been able to reproduce is now gone with a very large fleet of ship over a severely damaged earth now unable to return home. Awesome conclusion! SPOILER

Hey Jay! One of my favorite books of all time is Ron Luciano's autobiography about his path to becoming a major league umpire. Read it when I was about ten and there are lessons from that book that I still use today to defuse tough situations. That book probably did more to motivate me to become a sports official than anything else.
The Umpire Strikes Back is a great book any baseball fan will love it. Funny as all get out.

My mother went from an extremely rare but very pronounceable surname to one this is simple, only six letters and two syllables, said exactly as it is written and yet NOBODY gets it right at first glance. The future problems didn't occur to her at the time because she grew in the area having more people with that name than anywhere else on earth. Which is to say, all of them before some headed out to California. Still a small enough group that my main email address is my-first-name @ my-last-name dot com.
Worse, her first name is Herma, which induces cognitive dissonance in much of the population despite being exactly what it looks like. There is a repeated presumption of typos. Consequently, she gets a fair amount of junk mail every year intended for a non-existent Herman Robins.

My current last name looks like the opposite type of typo -- instead of a letter left off, one letter too many. It looks like a common English noun that someone stuck an extra "l" in. So it's commonly said (and written) as the noun. If they notice the "l" and realize it's three syllables, they stress the wrong syllable. I don't remember if there's a third variation. But there only being two variations is a giant leap for me towards pronounceability.
Oddly enough, it wasn't that my maiden last name had a grand tangle of consonants. Consonant and vowel alternated in sensible progression. It's just that you never expected to see those particular ones queuing together. And it wasn't a difficult tongue twister, but two of the letters were just not pronounced in English fashion. The last letter was the coup de grace - a sound that does exist in English but never represented there by one letter.
But really, "Robins"? Is that the true burden she suffers beneath? If so, all I can think of is that most people have already seen the name "Robbins" (Jerome, Tony, Baskin-, et al), know how that's said, and see this name is not quite that spelling therefore think it should not be quite that pronunciation?

For a splurge, Ashton Aged Maduro, or a Cohiba.
For a well-priced cigar with a minimum of off-flavors, Hoyo.
If you want something really mild, not my preference, but Macanudo or Davidoff ($$). Macanudos are nearly always impeccably constructed, which is a plus.
You'll have to figure out what thickness (ring gauge) suits you. I like 50+ and don't care much about length, so I tend to go with the Robustos.
If you want to store significant quantities, an Igloo cooler and some moistened wet florist foam (put it in some sort of enclosure, it tends to fragment) makes for a very cheap humidor.

I bet its because people don't know whether to use short or long vowels for it. My last name throws people off. Very German, starts with a U and they just don't know how to pronounce it. Can always identify telemarketers. Even professors in college would stop and look at it for a moment before they attempted to incorrectly pronounce it.

I have a friend whose father emigrated from Poland after WWII. Original name was Wiznatowiski-something-something-argle-bargle or some such. Decided to go radical and knock off all but the first syllable. So the family name became Wiz. Seemed very American to him but he had no idea what it would be like for the kids growing up, especially after 1975 when a certain show made it to Broadway and became a huge hit.

I'm not so sanguine. We'd have to roll a saving throw against our dexterity to not take damages ourselves, and the "critical hit" roll is definitely warranted in this kind of scenario.
