Eastwood Cuts Ad For Romney
Plus: Trump's Gigantic Announcement

— Ace

The ad will run in seven states -- Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio and Virginia. Which makes me a sad Panda, because there are obviously two more states it could run in.

Below: Trump offers $5 million to a charity of Obama's choice if he releases his college transcripts and passport.

I don't mind Trump's offer, per se. I'd like to see the college transcripts too. But he said, previously, that he had a "gigantic" story. This isn't a story; it's an attempt to get a story.

While there's nothing wrong with the offer, by overpromoting it, suggesting he already had the Holy Grail, he's made a lot of people disappointed today. So instead of being interested by this, I'm just let down.

Personally, last night, I was speculating to myself that maybe he had someone involved in the publication of Dreams From My Father, and that guy would say that most of his contacts for editing the book were with William Ayers.

That's sort of what happens when you say you've got something "gigantic." People start imagining things that they think might qualify as "gigantic."

Undersell, overdeliver isn't something Trump believes in, and I don't mean that snarkily; I mean that straight. He doesn't believe in it. He believes in the oversell as a sales technique.

Trump Crafty? A couple of readers make this point:

Don't know if anybody's said this yet, but what you're missing Ace is that this was Trump's preemptive strike against Gloria Alred. That's what this is about. Make her share the headlines with him. Bring her fully down to his level: P. T. Barnum.

Ah. Well then, well played.

I suppose it can't be a coincidence that Trump's Big Announcement just happened to come on the day Gloria Allred went to court.

13 Holy crap, from the Horde's mouth to the Romney campaign's ears. O/T but I ran to CFA for lunch (mmmmmm) and saw a Gary Johnson for Pres. yard sign by an exit. That was unexpected. There were three cars ahead of me, all with Romney bumperstickers. One also had an I Miss Reagan one that I want. There's also a RR yard sign by the road directly in front of the CFA. That made me laugh.

In some parts, maybe 1 Obama yard sign per block, on many blocks none. The difference between this year and '08 is incredible. In these neighborhoods the churches are a huge deal. The ministers are the leaders. I think Obama's endorsement of gay marriage has upset the Baptists. I don't think they'll vote for Romney, but I think some will stay home. #77 Yeah, but everyone in the entire industry knew that Countrywide was selling fraudulent loans to Fannie by 2007.  Gretchen Morgenson wrote an entire book about it in 2011.  60 Minutes had a whistleblower on last winter showing how Countrywide was inventing fraudulent loans and recounting how Bank of America fired her for investigating it.  And DOJ just gets around to suing them, 13 days before the election?

Is this a way of also burying the news that OFA has a $15 million loan from Bank of America?

Simply amazing.  Barky and company pressured BOA to buy Countrywide to keep it from going under. And any crimes they committed relative to F&F and FM were done before they were part of BOA.  They will have a hard time making this stick.

But As fare as F&F and FM goes, if BOA is smart the discovery phase will be enlightening for the rest of the country. I predict Barky and company will quietly settle for an amount that is big enough to save face.

I agree that the Obama love is down and all but I think there are a number of states that would flip much, much easier than WA.  I drive Redmond, well technically 1 block north of Redmond in Woodinville, to the Soviet Republic of West Seattle every day and am not seeing any Obama signs.  Regardless, these people vote McDermott in with 70% when he does not even put up a sign.  They would not vote for a Mormon Bankster over the hip black guy.  They see Obama's history of smoking weed as a selling point and Romneys not drinking a negative.

Posted by: soothsayer at October 24, 2012 09:11 AM (jUytm)

262 Yea I agree with the above that Trump actually did good here.  He didn't actually DO anything so the fact he has done public events with Romney can't cause blowback damage.  Yet in the last day or two we had the O the Coke Dealer story gurgle up along with the divorce papers filed story just on people trying to guess what Trump might reveal.  Means people knew about those (as the reporting on em made plain) but they were being kept quiet.  Now they aren't so quiet and Trump can't be blamed for any of it.

And the offer of five million dollars for basic records we have seen for pretty much every POTUS and serious candidate for a long time now are basically a state secret with O getting coverage can't help 0.  And again, no blowback is likely because Trump didn't dump a bunch of records with no paper trail to prove they are real, probably obtained illegally, etc.

And I still wouldn't put it past him to actually HAVE those records, money does talk and he has plenty of that and no problems using it.  So if his Oct 31 deadline passes he still might do a document dump if there is actually anything really embarrassing in it.  At any rate, if you are Team O you have to be thinking about the possibility and calculating the percentages... and perhaps reconsidering their own Oct/Nov antics like Ms. Allred is up to.  MAD isn't just for nukes?

I suppose it can't be a coincidence that Trump's Big Announcement just happened to come on the day Gloria Allred went to court.

This.   And what's more, Trump's "oversell," and generous offer of $5 million, can and SHOULD get a lot more airtime than Gloria Allred trundling out a warmed over divorce case that's a quarter century old.   The media can try to ignore    Trump   in favor of Allred,      but they do so at their own peril.      The Honey Boo Boos of the world know    who    Donald Trump   is; they have no frigging clue who Gloria Allred is.

277 You know, I just thought of something - might be kind of astro-turfing, but what if "a PAC" were to run ads about Initiative 502 and voting for Obama?  Basically, someone asks a voter if they are voting yes on 502, voter says yes, then asking if they are voting for Obama, voter says yes, and then ask why are they voting for Obama when his DEA is busy raiding all the dispensaries and imprisoning suffering old ladies and such..  tell them to vote for Gary Johnson who is pro-weed...

I mean, that might be kind of a dirty trick, but it is kind of cognitive dissonance, voting pro-pot and pro-Obama.

282 My first thought is that Trump has the records, but he's giving Obama the chance and an incentive to release them himself.  A decent thing to do and it puts pressure on O either way.  If he does have the records, they will come out sooner or later.  If Mitt asked him to hold off, then probably Nov 7th.

291 Intrade is only really accurate a day or two before the actual event.

Even then, the type of person that bets on an election is a political junkie that has strong feelings one way or another.  It's 2nd only to religion.

Do you really think a liberal Democrat that loves Obama is going to bet against him?  Or a conservative Republican against Mitt Romney?

It's not like trading a stock, it's almost purely driven on emotion, not money.

294 Without having watched The Donald, I'm guessing he has a second move (at least). L'il Barry is dangling. We already have him in his author bio claiming to have been born in Kenya. [Find your own link, sorry.] There is tantalizing evidence that the Saudis paid for his college. L'il Barry traveled to Pak. at a time when not many Americans went there: did he use an Indonesian passport? Some say he would have had to become an Indonesian citizen in order to be legally adopted by Soetoro.
I almost have a life, so I won't be tracking this down. Somebody should. It will be interesting to see what happens if L'il Barry fails in his attempt to ignore it (as he almost certainly will).

298 *** now they have the seed of Obama and his hidden records in their mind. *** The seed of Obama, you say. The US is only in this pickle because too damn many people accepted Obama's "seed" into their minds in the first place. Whether the records would make any difference to them is almost irrelevant at this point, even if they proved Obama was born in Kenya from the sperm of Stalin injected (in the usual fashion) into the arse of Mao Tse Tung and that he had never passed so much as a term paper in his life. About the only thing that could sink him now is proving beyond doubt that he shared his bath toys with Jerry Sandusky. And even then, I think he would still have his defenders.

301 I don't discount Trump...and the comment that it took down Allred is probably correct. And he could (possibly) have information on Buhrock but is sitting on it  and making him squirm. This may be enough to keep them quiet until the election.

While I believed in Santa Claus longer than some of my peers, I also believe Trump may have something and, possibly, the Romney campaign told him to cool it unless they give the word. Who knows?

I want Mitt Romney to win this fair and square without stooping to the level of scum of the Obama campaign. He is drawing crowds of 10,000 everywhere he goes now: Daytona Beach on Friday, which I saw with my own eyes. Last night at Red Rock outside of Denver----and an elderly lady said there that she had never seen such a crowd, even for concerts. She also echoed my comment that people are happy and optimistic, even among this many people: in Daytona Beach we were hot, sweaty, and hungry. Yet you heard nothing but cheer from others. I never heard one complaint of the crowd. I have never seen a crowd so polite and happy without one bad drunk or someone acting out. It was awesome. Romney/Ryan are winning.

305 Ace, In re Trump: my bet is that Trump buried whatever story he has (probably the coke sales story) right after Romney announced he could care less about the Stemberg divorce testimony, and no one should be afraid of the big, bad Allred. To cover, he came up with this lame announcement. Man, it must be nice to be the only politician in the history of the world so squeaky clean that even an Axelrod/Allred combo slime attack provokes no concern.

306 I'm glad Trump doesn't actually have proof that Obama killed a guy in college or something, because that would somehow have ended up helping Obama. So much of his appeal seems to come from the notion that talking about anything from his past is "othering" him, and that by supporting him, you can be Atticus Finch defending The Other from the forces of reactionary prejudice.

Make her share the headlines with him. Bring her fully down to his level: P. T. Barnum".   Perhaps.   But, what Trump does NOT want is for Allred to steal his thunder - -he wants his revelation to be the top story.  With the Allred thing delayed until Thurs, if he announced what he had now, then it would last ~12 hrs in the news cycle..... and then be trumped when Allred released hers and he was supplanted.   So, smart on Trump's partt.   His announcement today is a diversion, a lure.... tomorrow we'll find out what he's really got (if Allred gets her paperwork released).

321 Remember on the campaign trail in Michigan and said "Nobody doubts where I was born"?  I don't think it was a gaffe.  It was a message to Obama.  I think Trump has proof that Obama applied to college as a foreign student in order to receive scholarships.  He probably paid a mole to go to Occidental or Columbia to dig into the records.  That's what Reid's bellowing about Romney releasing tax returns was all about...make people think Romney was hiding something.  Not sure why Trump is playing a game like this...but the deadline is Oct. 31st, a week before the election.  If Obama doesn't fess up...he'll present the evidence.  This, of course, is all predicated on assumption that Trump not a dumbass.
