— DrewM Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood President declared himself a de facto dictator today.
Boy, no one saw this coming. Well if by "no one" you mean everyone who isn't a liberal foreign policy "expert".
A decree by Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi granting himself extensive new powers triggered dueling demonstrations Friday by supporters and opponents....
Muslim Brotherhood officials said the measures were necessary to ensure the countryÂ’s full and healthy return to democracy.
“This level of immunity for presidential decrees is indeed unprecedented, but it is necessary, and it is controlled by a time frame” that ends with the election of a new parliament, said Gehad el-Haddad, a senior Muslim Brotherhood adviser. “This constitutional declaration cements the way forward in terms of time frame and powers.”
But the decision raised immediate concerns among many liberal activists who had already been worried that Morsi had taken a distinctly authoritarian air in the three months since he swept out the top ranks of the military and sidelined what had long been a powerful independent institution in Egypt. EgyptÂ’s short-lived parliament was dismissed by the countryÂ’s high court shortly before Morsi took power, so legislative powers also are concentrated under the president. Taking the courts out of the equation means there will be no judicial review of MorsiÂ’s decisions.
Ah yes, "we must have authoritarian rule to allow for freedom and democracy"-Stuff Jefferson Said, The Arabic Edition.
Fearless prediction: This latest step will be met with calls for greater aid and dialogue from the foreign policy grandees who not long ago sneered at people who warned that the Brotherhood would did this exact sort of thing.
One man, one vote, one time. Hope the Egyptian's enjoyed it while it lasted.
Reminder: Always trust content from DrewM. and Ace of Spades HQ. From my post the day Morsi won the presidency.
The military is trying to hold sway over things as long as they can and try and co-opt the Brotherhood. The reality is, revolutionary movements like the Brotherhood don't see elections as a charge to govern but an opportunity to increase power. Morsi will sound conciliatory and such but will leverage this victory to increase pressure on the military and to exercise greater control than whatever formal power he winds up [with].Lots of optimistic talk among the usual suspects on CNN...the Muslim Brotherhood will be different or something. Personally, I think they've stood for things for decades, it seems insanely naive to think that they will suddenly moderate in victory.

Egypt can't win a war against Israel even with all their American supplied toys. The country doesn't have the logistical backbone to support any kind of sustained conflicted without outside assistance. If they can't even maintain a sufficient supply of food on the home-front, there is no way they can maintain an army in the field.

So, the Moslem Brotherhood is going to build a new UAR only it is going to be the United Islamic Republic this time, the original islamic republic in Iran is busy funding and training Hezbollah and using Syria for its bitch (BTW what is happening in Syria lately it has been kind of quiet), and the Turks are feeling frisky and dreaming of the glory days of the Sacred Porte. Is there any chance that if the rest of us keep our heads down they will go after each other instead? Apostates are more hated than infidels. Is there a way to encourage some intramural bloodletting?
This can only end in tears.

WILLY STERN: How David Petraeus Mastered The Media. “Every first-rate commander knows how to cultivate the media, and use the press to his (or her) advantage. Sadly, such commanders are hard to find today. . . . As such, we are losing the media war. Al Queda is very sophisticated at telling its story. The American military is not. . . . Even if the Obama crowd doesn’t admit it, we’re at war with radical Islam. The media is an important battlefield in that war. The enemy is engaging. Many of our best commanders are not. Result: We lose.”

Instapundit highlighted and linked to a new book on Amazon by Andrew McCarthy "Islamic Democracy: The Illusion of the Arab Spring"
In the comments on the book page, someone wrote about their experience in Tunisia in 1968, talking with 3 Tunisian teachers co-workers. They (the three) discussed the ultimate ascendancy of Islam even then. 1968. He realized then that he really didn't know these guys he was working with. 1968.
It's out there, and has been out there. For years. Of course people that know or suspect tend to want to keep the crap game going for as long as possible to get their cut of the take. I'm sure that even now people are working at MSNBC and CNN and the other networks to put on a show discussing what this "really means" and to tell us plebes not to worry our silly little heads about it. Because Top Men are working on the problem.

That definitely will be a point of contention. The bigger one will be who gets to lead the caliphate. Don't think for a second that the pious leaders of these countries aren't power hungry SOBs... Yeah, they all want a caliphate, but they all see themselves as the leaders. I don't think any of them want to cede THEIR soverignty and power to anyone

Oh, yeah, Israel is definitely boned. How do you think any country will prove that they're the real leaders of the caliphate? Follow through on years and rhetoric and wipe Israel off the map, maybe? I would expect Israel to be gone / severely damaged before the infighting starts. Common enemy.
As for us... I think it'll be a while before this issue DIRECTLY confronts us, but it will eventually

Because the Israelis can't guarantee they'll get all of the nuclear material without American support... and its kind of an all or nothing deal, because you know hell with rain down on Israel after the bombing, and they do not want a dirty bomb to be a part of that.
Oh, and in the past when israel did these "rogue" operations, it was with a wink and nod from the US govt... They know we had their back if shit hit the fan.
In this current situation, Europe with condemn Israel no matter what, and I wouldn't place a bet on the US getting Israels back if it comes down to it.

I'd rather be the US right now than Israel... Without US support, UN-armed Turkey & Egypt, with Iran & its proxies.... I don't know dude, that is a very very multi-front war they'd be looking at.

Mr. Obama talked with Mr. Morsi three times within 24 hours and six times over the course of several days, an unusual amount of one-on-one time for a president. Mr. Obama told aides he was impressed with the Egyptian leaderÂ’s pragmatic confidence. He sensed an engineerÂ’s precision with surprisingly little ideology. Most important, Mr. Obama told aides that he considered Mr. Morsi a straight shooter who delivered on what he promised and did not promise what he could not deliver.

The reality was that Mubarak was an old man, and when he died or ceased to be able to rule, there was going to be a power struggle. The Arabs have no historical notion of a Constitutional Republic or democracy. Orthodox Islam (Orthodox and historical , not 'Fundamentalist') describes and proscribes all aspects of life, leaving no room for the social activities and personal choices which have been typical of Western democracies.
As long as Islam exists ( and it will still be here after we are all dust) there can be no real "democracy" alongside of it.
I just wish we could keep them out of this country. It disturbs me mightily to see Islamic social practices in public in this country that holds that all men (and women) are equal under the law. As Islam grows within this country, democracy will begin to be besieged by their beliefs and superstitions.

Israel will prevail, nuclear bombs or not. And yes, I beleive the Bible when it tells me that. So much of what it teaches about humankind and it's relation to God has been spot on.
I also believe the Bible when it says that God will bless those who bless Israel. We've re-elected a president, and a senate that shows disdain toward our brothers in Israel. Look around at where we're at.

His speech in Cairo didn't inspire the Arab Spring. I don't mean to be haughty, but for you to even suggest that tells me you don't get the Middle East at all. This has been a long time coming, what do you think 9/11 was about? This has been a many decades long struggle.
I wholeheartedly agree that we shouldn't have gotten involved in Libya, but not because we were picking the "wrong side." Qadafi was a bad guy, and on a personal level I'm 100% with the rebels. Just as I'm 100% with the Egyptians who wanted Mubarak gone. But I disagree with our involvement because how in the hell do we think we can direct other people's affairs when we can't even direct our own? Leadership comes through example. And not to mention the fact that it's just plain unconstitutional. While I may feel bad for the people in Libya, who cares, it's not moral to force my neighbor to spend his hard earned money on it.
And I disagree that Obama has turned his back on Israel. How? Is Israel in ashes? When is Israel going to start paying for its own darn defense? Just in case the message hasn't gotten put out - WE'RE BROKE!

What a bunch of horse squeeze. The history of the old/new testament is one of the people in that part of the world being forever corrupt and selfish and prideful, always forgetting their creator and being destroyed naturally as a simple result of their bad behavior. I seem to remember something about someone being crucified too.
I'm just saying, who exactly are these great hero's you're so in love with?
Here in the USA what are the jewish people known for. Liberal media, liberal hollywood, liberal banking, corrupt liberal politics in places like NY, Chicago, etc.
I'm not hating on jews, I have a lot of respect for them. But if the shoe fits. What are the jewish people in Israel or the USA doing to advance the cause of freedom and individual liberty. Forgive me, I don't see much. I see a tiny tiny tiny fraction of the worlds population and geographic land mass which seems to dominate our news and foreign policy. It's asinine.

Basically, keep supporting 'progressively less bad' dictators which still need US support to stay in power (and to beat the last dictator we supported).
Eventually, the last dictator will be weak enough you can get a democratic government in there. And the populace has had time to gradually 'moderate/modernize'.
Surprisingly, Obama took that arc and reversed it. Color me shocked.
