— JohnE. Last night President Obama spoke to the National Urban League in New Orleans and for the first time since the movie theater shootings in Aurora, he signaled his support for stricter gun laws. Despite the media's constant rallying cry for gun control over the past week, Obama has been very careful not to speak the words "gun control". He knows it's election suicide.
"I believe the Second Amendment guarantees an individual the right to bear arms," Obama said. "But I also believe that a lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not on the streets of our cities."
Now, Obama has been much more honest about his beliefs on gun control in the past but I'm guessing Axelrod and crew have been poll-testing the hell out of "gun control" and they're seeing a loser. This recent Rasmussen poll (taken after the shootings) shows only 41% support for stricter gun laws. A Gallup poll taken after the Gabby Giffords shooting revealed a whopping 26% support for a handgun ban.
So, if you're Obama, what can you do? Enter the Orwellian phrase "curbing (tackling, taking on, reducing, etc) gun violence".
Most of the Obama-loving press knows what is going on here and are willing to play along. Others just can't seem to help themselves, and are trying to drag Obama over the finish line into "gun control". Watching this play out last night in the headlines was entertaining.
Chicago Tribune: Obama pledges to tackle gun violence after Colorado killing
CNN: Obama takes on gun violence in New Orleans speech
Reuters: Obama pledges to tackle gun violence after Colorado killing
ABC: Obama Renews Push to Reduce Gun Violence
LA Times: Obama calls for more steps to curb violence, including gun control. Oops, you went too far!
NBC: Obama addresses gun control for first time since Aurora shootings. And now the cat is out of the bag.
The Hill: Obama: 'Common sense' gun control for criminals, mentally ill
New York Mag: Obama Pushes Gun Control, Says Some Restrictions Should Be 'Common Sense'.
This is one of the few times you will see the press actively hurting President Obama's reelection chances, though they probably don't know it. Just how dangerous an issue is this for the President? Laura waded over to Democratic Underground and found a bunch of lefties tearing apart gun control. A sampling:
RKBA defenders know that "reasonable gun control" is code for whatever increment of civil rights we can take away TODAY. They also know that many (most?) in the gun control crowd will not be satisfied until firearms have been effectively banned.Register all firearms? A necessary first step to confiscating all firearms, so why agree to it?
A limit on the amount of ammunition you could possess? Suppose it started at 1,000 rounds - how long before the gun control crowd was screaming about reducing it to 50 rounds?
Knowing that no amount of gun control will ever satisfy a substantial number of gun control people, why would a pro-gun person agree to concede anything? Next year, "reasonable gun control" will just mean greater and greater restrictions.
From a personal perspective, I've heard enough from the likes of McCarthey, Bloomberg, the Bradys, Schumer, et al not to trust them one bit when it comes to this issue.
Gun control is a terrible issue for Obama to tackle this close to an election; hopefully the press can shame him into saying what he really believes.

Reading those excerpts from DU (bless Laura, I don't know how she can stomach that cesspool), I want to grab them by the shirt collar and scream in their faces, "IF YOU UNDERSTAND THIS, WHY DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND ANYTHING ELSE ABOUT BIG GOVERNMENT ENCROACHMENT?"
But I suspect the nuance would be lost on them

Oldie but Goodie
Time to Ban That Dangerous AMA?
Readers have a modest proposal: Ban those dangerous docs, before they kill again.
Writes one: "I find it interesting that the AMA is so concerned about gun control when statistics show us that more people are killed every year by doctor error than are killed by guns. I guess they feel they have a better chance of making a difference with guns than making doctors competent."
Another writes:
"Number of physicians in the U.S: 700,000. Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year: 120,000. Accidental deaths per physician: 0.171 (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services).
"Number of gun owners in the U.S.: 80,000,000. Number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) 1,500. Accidental deaths per gun owner: 0.0000188. Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.
"FACT: Not everyone has a gun, but everyone has at least one doctor. Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets out of hand.
"Remember: guns don't kill people; doctors do."

Makes perfect sense. The left has made him roll over on immigration and gay marriage, at the expense of hurting him in the general, only makes sense that the gun banners want their bone thrown at them as well. Expect unions and blacks to get something before the election. Personally I bet he legalizes pot at the convention for the youth vote.
I say let him go after all the fringe groups he can possibly find. Do and say every idiotic thing he can do to court their votes and support.
That'll just make the blowout in November all the more sweet. We could even call it a mandate, or something.

A big hairy public display of steely self-control is what Jug ears mqclusterfuck needs to demonstrate to get his street cred back. Like, if he and the first wookie were to join Jesse and the Rainbow push coalition in a huge boycott picket of Chik Filet. All of them that close to that much chicken, that would be true demonstration of commitment and willpower.

Hmm, something I should know? They're new channels on my cable. Is the backstory on their web site?
Maybe. ....I've never checked out the websites for those two shows.
Apparently, 'Red Jacket' [Sons of Guns] has their own website that is separate from the Discovery Channel...because they're a business.
Well, so is 'Gunsmoke' on American Guns.
But I haven't heard them mention their website....even though they probably have one too.
Both are family operations....one in Lousianna, the other in Colorado.
It's cool to see the different sort of 'flavor' that each one has.
Sons of Guns has always had some links to Law Enforcement and the Military.
American Guns has always had more of a window into private collectors and historical firearms.

While I agree with this sentiment, it amuses me to see liberals use the slippery slope argument. Whenever it is used on another issue, liberals go nuts saying that it (the slippery slope argument) is not a valid argument.
I've long believed that slippery slope arguments are valid. It does not take a genius to see that a leads to b which leads to c. Now, in and of itself, the argument may not be enough justification to not do "a", but it is not an illogical or non-factual argument. Changes in the law and changes in public acceptance of things will always lead to something else.
So, for example, to say that legalizing gay marriage will lead to attempts to legalize polygamy is not absurd. It's easy to see that once gay marriage is legal and accepted, people will say "well, if gender doesn't matter, why does the number of individuals involved matter?" That isn't to say that is necessarily a persuasive argument against gay marriage, depending on your views, but it is not an invalid, illogical or non-factual argument. The argument for gay marriage is that we should not stop "love" between people. Well, how does that not apply to 3 people versus 2?
All I am trying to say is that slippery slope arguments get a bad rap. All a slippery slope argument is is an argument that there are fairly foreseeable consequences that will flow from action "x" that should be taken into account when making a decision.

Think too about the "AK47" comment. First, if only soldiers were allowed to use them, the soldiers would be from communist countries or Muzzie terrorists.
Finally: if AK47s were totally banned, it wouldn't have meant a damn thing to the Aurora shooter. He didn't have one.

Good synopsis. We kinda picked up on that last night. I guess I'm late to start watching these shows (hey, I'm from Alabama), but they're pretty cool. They'll be in the regular rotation, like BBC's Top Gear is on Monday nights.

Marines are there to storm the beach... they are a fast reaction force... NOT Police.
And if you think that distinction is not important? If you think that change in character and outlook means nothing? wow.... just wow...
Know what else has changed? The types missions and wars the Marines are being tasked with. They aren't storming the beaches in places like Afghanistan or Iraq, and probably won't be in the near future.
They're more likely to be dealing with Islamic assholes planting IEDs, and for that a police / investigations unit can be very valuable.

You might be able to watch some of the previous episodes on the Discovery website.
Some of the projects on Sons of Guns have been....amazing.
'Joe' is sort of the wizzard.
[He's the blonde-haired guy, with the artfully trimed beard.]
He has licenses in heavy artillery, explosives....just about anything.
'Will'...the owner....once said of him, "The fact that that boy is such a devout Christain, is all that keeps me from being terrified of him".
Heh.
'Chris'....the young guy, is Will's son in law, now.
In the first season...he was the goofy kid who everyone made fun of, and pranked.
Posted by: wheatie at July 26, 2012 09:39 AM (mtRB0)
Will on Sons of Guns doesn't own Redjacket anymore because he lost his FFL after failing two ATF audits in a year. Seems he made some full-auto guns and suppressors off the books for his friends and one of his employees ratted him out. He was short about a hundred or so guns. ATF no likey.
Besides, he did dumbshit stuff like build twin water cooled M-16s for their small boats when the Navy has lots of air cooled M-240s better suited to the mission.

Prez Clinton is/was a master liar. He can tell you the most obvious lie with a straight face, and not even give it another thought. The skill that Teh One has mastered is to pound on fake people...or as Wikipedia so succinctly puts it, to "create the illusion of having refuted a proposition by replacing it with a superficially similar yet unequivalent proposition (the "straw man"), and refuting it, without ever having actually refuted the original position" I've never seen anyone better at it.
Well, let me tell you, Jug-Ears: there are a lot of anti-gun people that would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of the American people to defend against the kind of tyranny you are setting up. Regardless of whether the above statement is true or not, I win because shut up.

That stuff is sooo heavily regulated its not funny. Jersey is technically a class 3 state, but you got a better chance of smoking pot with god while tag teaming pam anderson before you'll EVER getting a machine gun permit in jersey. The penalties are brutal, and that fuckstick thinks dealers at gun shows pass them out like condoms in Berkley.

Yeah, the producers of the show wanted to keep it quiet. The ATF was very pissed and the street level agents actually enjoy telling other gunshop owners about it. The show really went to his head and when you see him blathering on about the future of Redjacket just remember he doesn't own it anymore.

I think he is tired of having both ValJar and Moochillini to keep happy 24/7/365. He does not even like women by virtue of being constructively abandoned by his Mother and raised under Muslim precepts during his formative years. Then Mom abandoned him for real and shipped him off to his White Grandma to finish his upbringing. Women have been deciding things for him his whole life and he wants to be done with it. He wants the days when he can finally live apart from Moochillini and quit pretending to love her and sing her praises. Post-Presidency, he can travel the lecture circuit, give the same speech over and over again to rave reviews and see the wife and kids as often as bj clinton sees hillary.
