Fantastic: Paralyzed Rats Regain Full Motion & Nerve Control After Treatment
— Ace

Rats are different than people, but they aren't that different.

Dramatic video of paralysed rats walking and even climbing stairs has given new hope of a cure for people with spinal cord injuries.

Swiss scientists were able to stimulate nerves to grow around damage in the spinal cord, restoring movement in the animals' hind legs.

"Our rats have become athletes when just weeks before they were completely paralysed," Dr Gregoire Courtine of the EPFL research group in Lausanne said.

"I am talking about 100% recuperation of voluntary movement."

The scientists injected chemicals directly into the spinal cord, and stimulated the nerves with electrical impulses.

...

The research is published in the journal Science and the scientists hope to start clinical trials in paralysed patients "within a year or two"...

Within the last couple of weeks a preliminary study was released that shows that human skin cells, a human's OWN skin cells, have been shown to replace and repair damaged heart cells.

They expect that within 10 years many people suffering from heart failure or scar tissue due to heart attacks will be able to repair their own hearts.

12 This is truly spectacular news.  It's an area I've been dabbling in (the intersection of nanoscience and nerve growth) and I would be very, very happy to see the need for that work go away.

The only negative I had was that the researcher they interviewed sounds like Insp. Clouseau.

Posted by: pep at June 02, 2012 07:54 AM (6TB1Z)

13 I think these are the same folks who started this line of research back around '95 or so. Back then they were able to restore partial movement with direct injections plus carefully depositing a chemical cocktail after surgically restoring nerve architecture.

46 My father had diabetes, Type I, or juvenile as it used to be called.

He was in his late 20s (I suppose - he served in WWII and was born in 1926 so someone can do the math) and when his mother was given the news she fainted dead away.

That was because she'd had schoolmate diagnosed with this years before, and that poor girl was dead in six weeks.

My father lived for 63 years, fathered 3 children and lived a full life, sadly he did not outlive his mom who made it to 93.

Insulin was a MIRACLE.  This treatment might be another.

We must thank the good God who gave us reason for these miracles.

58 44 - You know, these two topics do go together. Lots of men don't really figure out how to seduce women until they're old enough that most women worth seducing aren't even open to the possibility of being seduced by them. If we can eventually find a way to keep our bodies working and looking better longer, there will be many MANY more happy couples in their older ages who finally find happiness. As they say, youth is wasted on the young. Well what if we stick around long enough to really, finally get a second chance at it?

They've also made huge advances in contact lens technologies.   As a result, while I would be resigned to slowly going blind a short while ago, I now look forward to eventually getting almost perfect vision back.

94 I had Fuch's Dystropy. They went in and peeled off the back layer of my cornea and put in a donor layer. They put in a new lens (and did away with the cataracts) Put in an air bubble to hold it all in place. Had to look at the ceiling for 2 days. But I had 4 stitches instead of a bazillion and 1 week recovery time! Had worn glasses for 55 years, now wear readers occasionally. Ain't technology grand?

Actually, there usually is a blood drive at Comicon, and there are drugs that can be used to induce high levels of tear production. Combine the two and you've got the nerds saving the world once again.

A genuine cure for a large portion of spinal injuries would save immense amounts of medical expense over the lifetime of the sufferer. I'd far rather see the government throw tax dollars into research for something like this than just throwing cash at life support for chronic conditions that are never going to get better left to themselves.

Well, you didn't publish any of your techniques. What else can they do but start from scratch?

105 My paraplegic father-in-law (a tough old WWII vet who did marine salvage operations) would never have his legs removed, because he figured as soon as he did, they would come up with a cure.  I never told him how unlikely I thought that was.  Wish he was still around to hear this.

109 If it doesn't involve dead babies, we don't care.

Mind you, we'll still run it on page B4 with headlines about "Stem Cells Cure Paralysis" and imply throughout that we mean the "good" stem cells that come from cloned, murdered, human babies.
