Favorite Christmas Songs
— andy

'Tis the season for holiday traditions like 24 Hours of A Christmas Story on TBS, arguing with your drunken uncle Bill over aunt Sue's patented extra-dry turkey and, of course, Christmas music.

There are some great songs and some real stinkers. I personally detest any version of Little Drummer Boy with the heat of a thousand suns. Pa-rump-a-pum-pum ... WTF is that all about?

My absolute favorite Christmas song/version, though, is below the fold. Offer up your likes and dislikes in the comments.

Ahhh, Otis. What might've been if not for that plane crash ...

Merry Christmas, Morons and Moronettes.

Here's One That's Grown On Me [Ace]: Man do I love Billy Squire.

This one isn't technically about Christmas but it gets played with the Christmas songs.

2 I mostly prefer the religious songs.

"Oh Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel" is probably my favorite.  Not a lot of fluff to it, and it gets right down to the point.

5 Worst song: So This Is Christmas.

John Lennon's worst whiny leftard simpleton impulses, all dressed up as a holiday song.  Even the tune sucks.

6 I've always loved "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and especially the Stan Kenton version. Then again, the Stan Kenton Christmas album is by far my favorite Christmas album. Nothing really comes close to it.

Rawls could always bring it!  One of the greatest, and most underrated singers of all time, but it's still the Little Drummer Boy, which is nauseating no matter who performs it.

The Little Drummer Boy has always been one of my favorites,    though   I know YMMV.

It's nearly impossible for me to pick a favorite Christmas song because I like so MANY of them.  The Medieaval Baebes version of "The Holly and the Ivy" is a favorite.   So is Loreena     McKennitt's     version of "Good King Wenceslas."     And Blackmore's Night has a gorgeous rendition of "O Come, Emmanuel" that I    listen to year-round because it's just so great.

This year I've been listening   a  lot   to "Lo,    How   a Rose E'er Blooming" as sung by Feist.   I love the slow, dreamlike quality    and slightly more modern    but    minimal   instrumentation.

I can't get to YouTube   to find it, but I can GOOGLE it.   So here's a link.

19 "O Holy Night" is my favorite. I guess the version of it I like best is Martina McBride's. But Hall and Oates actually did a really nice version of it too. My favorite modern Christmas albums are "When My Heart Finds Christmas" by Harry Connick, Jr. and an old one called "Jingle Ball Jazz" that has some wonderful swing and jazz versions of popular Christmas songs, starting with a fabulous version of "Sleigh Ride." These are played every Christmas morning in my house.

20 I like anything that Karen Carpenter sang - she died much too young.  Dean Martin's version of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" is pretty good.  If you want to hear something that is beautiful, go listen to "Mid-Winter" by members of Boston's Trinity Choir... very moving.

Hate any Christmas song done by anyone of the Beatles...  want to smash my family jewels with a 12 pound sledgehammer when one of those songs is on the radio...

Worst song: So This Is Christmas.

Oh good grief, YES.   *shudder*   I hate that    song so much.    Whenever it comes on the radio I just want to    punch a homeless    person in the face.

Another song I HATE is that one that all the pop tartlets seem determined to sing, "Grown-Up Christmas List."   Normally I like David Foster's songs, but that song is just so cloying and    trite.   The only version I've ever heard that I liked was    by a  Japanese    singer, and the only reason I liked   it was because I couldn't     understand about 5/6 of the lyrics.

34 About "A Christmas Story"

I really detested the show growing up.  People loved it.  I thought it was boring, and the father character was mean.

Then I watched last year on the instance o the wife.  The father was awesome.  He is just like me.  Children and families really haven't changed that much over the decades.  Dad's have to act mean so the little brats listen, we aren't really mad, it is just the only way to keep order.

Anyway, I still don't really dig the show, I was just surprised at how much my perception had changed over the years.

I have a recording of "Lo, How a Rose..." sung by a chorus that features someone very close to me who is no longer here.  Sometimes I CAN'T listen to it, but sometime this evening I'm going to try.

Right now I have George Winston's "Holly and the Ivy" on... he did a great album, piano solos.  Called "December," I think.  Worth looking for if you don't have it.

40 For me, I HATE all secular songs about the season.  They are so empty, and all the department stores play them way too much.  My least favorite, is Jingle Bell Rock.  Jingle Bells is bad enough, but JBR makes my skin crawl and my hair to fall out.  (that's why its so thin on top)

88 Quoting Clutch Cargo: "The most horrific version of Little Drummer Boy by 2 favorite singers:
http://youtu.be/ADbJLo4x-tk
Bummed me out in 1977, bums me out now. Just a personal thing I guess."

Yep.  You are right.  It's right down there with "So This is Christmas" for lyrics, and even with David Bowie and Bing Crosby, the singing is pretty bad, too.  Here's a verse from this monstrosity:

Every child must be made aware
Every child must be made to care
Care enough for his fellow man
To give all the love that he can

I felt physical pain from listening to this tripe!  I mean, Little Drummer Boy is about a poor boy giving his only gift to the baby Jesus, and they turned it into a love-your-brother message.  Before the tune, David Bowie said that The Little Drummer Boy was his son's favorite tune.  After that performance, I'll bet the kid picked another tune as his favorite!

172 Some faves and some hates: LOVE: The Little Drummer Boy, when done right, preferably high energy, more on the drums than on the "rum-pum-pum-pum"s. Still waiting to find a version with a kickin', In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida-style drum solo. Great ones: Audio Adrenaline, The Echoing Green, Joan Jett. God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, particularly recent versions by Pillar and Viva Voce. Brian Setzer Orchestra does a really good instrumental version as well. Joy to the World -- love the lyrics, fave version is the O.C. Supertones'. O Come, O Come Emmanuel -- one of my mom's faves, again I love the lyrics. Third Day and Chasing Furies both have great versions. O Come All Ye Faithful -- my favorite version recently is by, of all bands, Twisted Sister, who mashes up their own "We're Not Gonna Take It" solo into the song. For a straighter, but still rockin' version, check out Third Day. O Little Town of Bethlehem, especially as performed by Hangnail. O Holy Night -- I LOVE this song, but have yet to find a version that I really like. I did a techno/remix, Echoing Green-style version a couple of Christmases ago that comes pretty close. BarlowGirl's version is decent, as is Mariah Carey's. Wish more people would record the second verse, especially the pre-chorus and chorus: "The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger In all our trials, born to be our Friend He knows our need, to our weakness is no stranger Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!" As far as secular Christmas songs, I like "12 Days", in moderation, particularly the Relient K version. "Winter Wonderland", as reimagined by Fleming and John (and crammed into the shape of "Misty Mountain Hop"), or the version by Stryper. HATE (yes that's strong, but accurate): Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer The Christmas Shoes Grown-Up Christmas List INDIFFERENT: Don't particularly care to hear Rudolph or Frosty more than once or twice in the season -- not that I hate them, but seriously overplayed. And I'm really not hip on a lot of the early-20th century cuts ("Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "White Christmas", "Silver Bells", "Sleigh Ride", or especially "The Christmas Song", etc) that seem to take up too much of the airwaves this time of year. TL;DR version: Stick to the sacred classics and rock them out, and you win in my book.

182 I went toxic on Christmas songs in the early '90s. The religions/traditional stuff I still like, but it's pleasant background and I doubt I could pick one out now. The pop stuff can go rot, tho I agree with last night's comments re "Christmas Wrapping", if only because I can find it unobjectionable...which says a lot these days.

I love Christmas and most Christmas songs.  But Little Drummer Boy is near the bottom of the list right before So This is Christmas and people modernizing traditional carols.  As for A Christmas Story the movie, I like it because I can relate to it, it's my generation.  I can remember dressing in those heavy woolen snow suits, my father fighting the coal furnace, and going downtown to see the store windows and Santa at Higbees.  Other than that it isn't the greatest Christmas movie.

Songs...again it's my childhood and teens so.... Gene Autry singing Here Comes Santa Claus(by the way, Gene wrote the song) ,

Dean Martin singing Baby It's Cold Outside,

Frank Sinatra singing I'll Be home For Christmas,

Judy Garland singing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,

 the Andy Williams Christmas Album,

 Eddie Arnold spelling CHRISTMAS, and

well just about any Christmas song that is song as I remember it.

224 Put me in the anti-Drummer Boy camp. And pretty much any contemporary pop singer doing Christmas songs, original or traditional. They don't sing them properly -- too much forced emotion, or else too much irony. Favorites? Luciano Pavarotti singing Italian Christmas songs, any boys' choir singing Silent Night . . . . . . and, of course, "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer," the most important cultural product of the past thousand years.

And here's another awful one: Dominick the Christma Donkey, which was a regional hit in the NYC area so we still get to hear it nowadays.  Forget ring-a-ding or tra-la-la this is HEE HAW HEE HAW all the way!

Perhaps it had appeal here to the ethnic catholic population but oh boy is it a bad song.

This is a great thread, btw.  So many good recommendations here.
