— DrewM It's only "good" if you don't expect much. Welcome to the new normal.
The nation’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 8.3 percent in February despite better-than-expected job growth, according to government data released Friday. The Labor Department said that the economy added 227,000 jobs last month. The gain was led by jobs in the professional and business services sector — many of them temporary positions — and the health care industry. Government employment held steady in February after shedding an average of 22,000 jobs per month last year. The number of jobs added in January was also revised upward to 284,000.
Just for fun, compare this "Happy Days are Here Again" coverage to how some in the media covered 4.7% unemployment under Bush.

So, should we set up a betting pool for the time that Che get's canned today? Don't know what time his shift is, but I'd say five minutes after he clocks in. And, he'll get fired for the petition thingy (creating a disruptive and hostile environment). Of course, during the "interview" he'll be asked if he knows anything about the vandalism. And it will be made clear that the police are now involved. They won't accuse him or anything, they'll just pass that information along to him. But he will be fired today, oh yes he will.

Now, we could believe the liars in DC and say that every fed dollar spent generates 3 or 4 dollars in economic activity, or we could be total pessimists and believe the Austrian school econs that say the multiplier is more like 0.3 (I'm in the pessimist crowd).
But for the sake of the pretty simple math I am about to horrify you all with, I'll use a straight 1:1 multiplier. One dollar in deficit spending equals one dollar in per capita earned income.
Now, the average per capita earnings was as high as $53k a few years ago, but has now declined to around $48k. Eh, what's a 10% decrease in average earnings anyhow. But for more simplification I'll just use $50k as the average.
So, $1 trillion / $50k = 20 million. That is 20 million jobs being supported by borrowing from our children and grandchildren. It's also 20 million out of a total of 145 million jobs currently occupied in the US. Why, that's over 13%! Thirteen percent of the current jobs are supported by deficit spending. Meanwhile savers lose money on interest, per capita income continues to fall, inflation chews up more and more of what's left, and fees and taxes continue their inexorable rise.
Yep, it's all sunshine and unicorns under the OFuckWad's administration.
Keep sucking that Marxist dick Greg.

This economy has gotten so bad in Florida. I'm upside down, underwater and approaching foreclosure in my dream home. Development and construction is at an all time low and I've had to look out of state for work in my field. I'm too proud to walk away from this place like some of my friends have suggested.
I finally got a phone interview. In Washington State. If I'm offered the job I'll accept it and try to manage splitting up my family into 2 seperate domiciles. It will be tough and we are not looking forward to it. Maybe I can hold on long enough in WA and hope things rebound in Florida.

Judging from Bat Chain Puller's post (#46), it looks like when Pixy disabled most HTML he also killed the feature that rejects long strings of unbroken text.
So Tinyurl isn't necessary anymore.
But extremely long URLs will do the same thing as post #46, causing a scroll bar to appear at the bottom of the page. So think about that when posting entire URLs.

Nope, I wish we were gaining employment to at least make up for the new people entering the workforce. We gain 3 Million workers per year. At this rate we will come up 500,000 jobs short of breaking even. If you can beleive this report.
Gallup has been mirroring the BLS numbers until this month and they are wildly different this month.
Even according to BLS private sector employment was down over 40,000 from last month. What worries me is that the same thing that happened in 2010 (recovery summer) will happen. We had 3 good months and then the bottom fell out again.

About a mile from my house, a 7-11 went out of business. How in the world does a 7-11 in a residential neighborhood go out of business?
Here are 3 businesses that are thriving: 2nd hand thrift shops, payday loan establishments, and pawnbrokers.
And you'd think that $1,000,000,000,000 in stimulus money might trickle down far enough to buy this county some new pavement on our streets, but no.

Every time these numbers come out, it bears repeating that the civilian non-institutional population grows by roughly 210,000 people every month. At a labor force participation rate of roughly 63%, you need something around 125,000 jobs just to break even. So the real "jobs created" number is something like 100,000 in February. Anemic.
But the real problem is that the economy is still down something on the order of 5% in terms of the employment/population ratio since the peak of the Bush II bubble in December 2006. Based on a non-institutional population of roughly 240 million, that's 12 million jobs we're down. To get back to that level of employment by November 2012, and to keep up with population growth, we'd have to add something like 1.3 million jobs a month.
In other words... unicorns!

I'm working so far out of my field, I can't even see the town anymore. Four years ago I was a machine shop foreman making around $40k. Not great money, but the cost of living wasn't that high down here either.
Now I'm a part-time telemarketer in a dead-end job with no bennies and no future making about $9k a year, just enough to keep the wolf away from the door and keep me in Guinness and gas, nothing more. I won't relate all the things B'Gal and I have had to do to downsize during that time.
I have plenty of friends who've had to do likewise. The SCOAMF can massage these numbers all day long, but they can't change the truth that their policies haven't pulled us up out of anything, and are in fact directly responsible for the huge waste of human capital that we're experiencing today.

There seems to be a split economy in Denver. I've sold almost a million on residential real estate in the last 3 months, and I'm mostly retired and live 90 miles up in the mountains now. You are right about the commercial market, lots of vacancies. Residential rental market is doing well though. I get conflicting reports on hiring....

Think high gas prices and unemployment have got people down? Maybe you just need a vacation. The beaches of Florida and California have never been more crowded, and as the weather gets warmer they will surely draw even more people. It's a new trend called "Beach Camping", and it's taking both coasts by storm. Just a glance up and down any given beach will tell you all you need to know. People are cutting back on their spending...but not cutting back on their fun. Children can be seen playing in the water and throwing balls back and forth in the sand, and families are cooking on portable grills. Many of these people are taking advantage of the current economy by spending months at a time camping on the beach. We caught up to one self-proclaimed "beach bum" who was simply thrilled with her current living situation. Her name is Mary Cloggenstein. She lost her job as a telemarketer for non-profits in Brattleboro VT, and she's now here in Florida. Mary, tell us about an average day for you.
"Oh, it's wonderful. I came here by myself, but now I have a whole new family and I love my little tent neighborhood. My tent blew away in the last storm, but now I just sleep on the sand, and I feel even closer to nature! Everyone here is happy that our President Obama gives us enough money to live on, while not seperating us from our families. Families are spending more time together now! We all love you President Obama!!"
Haha, thank you Mary. As you can see, the beach is running out of room. You'd better get here fast! With KLIB nightly news, I'm Rebecca Watkins-Goldberg. Back to you Tom.

If I were SoS (not knowing anything specific about his job situation but taking a guess on his rank and job field), I would be a good guy for a few months, but eventually I would claim "hostile work environment" and take a big fat settlement from the company. Eventually he is going to want to have a normal life again and it really sounds like he's being ostracized now.
I am assuming SoS is in a technical field, which is one in which he has a more concrete record of his job skills than he would if he were in a "soft field" that relies more on personal recommendations.

I think if the company does everything it can - and this is just the beginning; believe me, they probably started rewriting the employee manual days ago and there will be many training sessions at every level to address conflict in the work place, etc. - it will be hard to justify a lawsuit. If the company fires all the trouble makers and fuck ups, which it seems willing to do, he's going to have a hard time with a lawsuit going forward. Now, he could personally sue that HR nitwit since she was an agent of the company, but I highly doubt he'll want to do that. Plus, I think people will return to normal after all the turds are flushed. People will thank him I bet.

Durable order sales are down, inventories are up. Europe will be in a full blown recession shortly. Even China's "official" stats are slowing which means in reality, they are probably having a recession too.

Not in these numbers are the droves forty and fifty year old veterans trying to re-enlist because there's no work to be had.
Not in these numbers are the people who bought cheaply a disused and broken-down piece of machinery, such as a pressure washer or a floor waxer and call themselves a business despite net profits less than minimum wage.
Not in these numbers are the former salesmen, once well to do on commissions, manning cash registers or stocking shelves in grocery stores.
Not in these numbers are the scrappers who ride around looking for appliances on the roadside, or dig through garbage cans at the local gas station for aluminum to sell. Or their less scrupulous cousins, the metal thieves who will take any salable metal that isn't bolted down, even if it's a sewer cover or railroad tie.
Also not to be found these numbers is a certain exhausted, exasperated swamp philosopher, an ex-retail manager whose job was downsized, lives with his mother, and can only find part-time work while working on a bachelor's degree.
This is the new America. Living on its' parents couches while the world falls down around it. Clinging to the tattered shreds of dreams that refuse to die. Where if you're not receiving the government cheese, you're paying for it.
Remember who we are and what we are fighting for. A blind, three-legged dog would be a better President than Obama.

That’s right. In a move little noticed outside of the business pages, General Motors last week bought more than $400 million in shares of PSA Peugeot Citroen – a 7 percent stake in the company. …
Peugeot can undoubtedly use the cash. Last year, PeugeotÂ’s auto
making division lost $123 million. And on March 1 – just a day after
the deal with GM was announced – Moody’s downgraded Peugeot’s credit
rating to junk status with a negative outlook, citing “severe
deterioration” of its finances.

Unusually warm weather has pulled the usual Spring purchases forward, and there will be head scratching when 2Q consumer spending is flat
There isn't a ton of consumer spending as it is other than increased spending attributed to food and fuel costs.

(MSNBC) The election of President Barack Obama in 2008 triggered an explosion in the number of militias and so-called patriot groups in the United States, the Southern Poverty Law Center reported in its annual tally of such anti-government organizations.
There were 149 militias and patriot groups when Obama took office, compared to more than 1,200 today — an increase of 755 percent, the nonprofit civil rights organization reported.
"The increase has just been astounding," said Mark Potok, editor-in-chief of the SPLC report. "The reality is that many of these groups are becoming more and more fearful that Barack Obama will win the re-election. You can see the anger rising along with that fear."
Once again, Barry doesn't need a re-election campaign. The MFM is taking care of it for him

Tis a worry for me, as well. Romney doesn't want to light his hair on fire, meaning, he appears to want to handle Obama's radicalism with kid gloves. We saw how well that worked out for McLame. I'm hedging my bets on the fact that he really, truly wants to be president -- has put so many years into it and so much money that when push comes to shove, he'll maybe eek out a jab in the ribs once or twice.

High up on the list of numbers I trust less than the BLS unemployment stats would be anything from the SPLC.
That there would be any increase at all in "militias" has more to do with the real and broadening belief in an upcoming SHTF more than an OMFG! A black President phenomenon. "that cannot be described as liberalism. And the fact that they were called National Socialists tells us about as much about their views as "people's republics" tell us about Communists'."
You're using the "classical" definition of liberal to make that point. The fact that the word was stolen and repurposed about 100 years ago to give the political left better PR confuses the matter. Related: All of the Peoples' Democratic Republics of Wherever did essentially the same thing on a larger scale. The Left just loves to torture the language to benefit its own ends. We know this.
The fact remains, Hitler and Moussolini were socialists before they were fascists chronologically. That the path to power for them came in the form of adding "traditional" uglies to the platform does not change that the basis of their economies revolved around State control of the means of production - that be socialist, yo.
Posted by: Jaws at March 09, 2012 10:54 AM (4I3Uo)
And the fact that they were called National Socialists tells us about as much about their views as "people's republics" tell us about Communists'.
National Socialists really were socialists, railing against international capital and financial markets (one of the drivers of their anti-Semitism). Their platform called for nationalization of industries, land reform, social entitlements ("social justice") in the form of the government providing jobs, education, and healthcare.
The Night of the Long Knives, when Hitler wiped out the leadership of the SA, turned the National Socialist Party away from advocating that sort of platform and toward a leadership cult, but the underpinnings of the party remained basically socialist.

I don't think it discredits the Right at all to acknowledge this, other than in the eyes of lazy Godwin's Law liberals.
