— Ace Or, at least, among the first reviews.
I love the Hobbit, but am not looking forward to a tight little adventure turned into a three-film epic. The first film here, by the way, is two hours fifty minutes.
It's got Radagast the Brown in it. I... I have heard the name. I'm pretty sure he's not in the Hobbit.
As fans will tell you, "That's because they've filmed the Appendices of the Lord of the Rings!!!," as if that's a good thing. Like I've been dying to see the screen adaptation of Appendix II and IV of the Lord of the Rings. Plus some footnotes from the Simarillion.
I like Martin Freeman's line readings as Bilbo, though. He sounds very annoyed.
By the way-- the third season of "Sherlock" won't air in America until 2014. Shooting has been pushed back until March, due to Freeman's (Watson's) work on The Hobbit and Cumberbach's (Sherlock's) work in Star Trek II.

There was actually some pretty cool stuff happening in the same timeframe as Bilbo's adventure, such as Gandalf and Galadriel attacking Sauron's fortress in Mirkwood and driving him out. I'm guessing that will be included because Galadriel is in the movie.

Not looking forward to this for the exact same reasons... 'Hobbit' would be a fantastic prequel to the LOTR trilogy if it had just been filmed as the book describes it...
...but Jackson, having won a Best Picture Oscar for his limited tampering with LOTR probably has told himself he can screw with The Hobbit all he wants to.
And as for Cumberbatch...he's the new Khan.
That movie's going to suck too.

Half the actors on tv are brits faking American accents.
I was watching the first Laura Croft movie yesterday because I was home sick. (Yeah, that's it, I was sick, no other reason, why do you ask?) Anyway, there was a scene with an American (AJ) doing a passable Brit accent, and a Brit doing a pretty good American accent (Daniel Craig). Jon Voight also did a Brit accent. It seems like a pretty inefficient system.

Mostly because films aren't novels. A script is much more demanding in terms of structure and pace. In a movie, particularly a genre piece, you need to have all the elements of a heroic journey almost timed to the minute, and you only have 120 minutes for the average flick to get it done.
In a novel you can fuck around describing a fucking chair for 10 pages like Hawthorne. You don't have to use the heroic journey as a frame either. Novelists can be extraordinarily sloppy in structure and still end up with a great book.

How do you film an appendix for theater consumption? Leave it out entirely? Tolkien knew his books lacked a lot of explanation (somewhat of a paradox given the amount of explanation he put into the stories, but nonetheless true) about so many events and things linking the broader story arcs. Which is why he wrote so much supplementary material.
The question is, do you leave it out and give your audience a disjunction between the two stories, or put it in, and muddle The Hobbit which is supposed to be rather stream lined.
I await to see the results. I just hope he avoids the prequel trap.
