We're going over the cliff. If the Republicans offfet TFG exactly what he is demanding, he will sinply raise his demands (Past performance being the best predictor of future behavior), and the failure to reach a deal will be 100% blamed on the "intransigent Republicans".

Also , mebbe 1st?

He didnt wanna do it, but in the spirit of bipartisanship it was necessary. NO SPENDING cuts ever (talk of them yes but no reality). Boehner will come out saying it was the best deal he could get. Quite true, and the only way to make a path out of this is to let the country feel the pain of the poor decisions we've made.

Never thought I'd see these kind of times when I was growing up.  I stop and wonder, from time to time, what folks felt like back in the Dust Bowl, or in the prelude to WWII, or in 1776, for that matter, when everything just seemed to be going straight to hell.

Obama's doing the only things he knows: gives speeches to his adoring fans and wage class warfare.

My prediction is the same as a month ago: over the cliff we go.

Just look at how it went back in Gingrich's days. He spent countless hours over many weeks working out a deal with Clinton. Obama wouldn't even know how, if he wanted to (which he doesn't).  Trash the economy, and blame capitalism. It's Rules for Radicals 101, applied to his application of Cloward-Piven. To presume that Obama wants this to happen is to assume erroneous things, such as a concern on his part for the economy and unemployment.

It takes Presidential leadership to get this done - or strong leadership in the legislature - and we have neither.  I don't think either side is even interested in making a deal, and the public literally voted for gridlock. It is also literally too late - procedurally - to avoid "the cliff".  Why is anybody even pretending that it might not happen?

That is only partially true. Once they get into that environment, (Washington DC) They are surrounded by people who make their living off the government, or make their living catering to the government and people who are members of that social set.

The peer pressure surrounding them is all unidirectional. Towards bigger government and more spending.  They may not start out in favor of it, but the stream certainly moves them in that direction.

219 Republicans can't win these "crisis" moments. In a crisis, people look to short-term fixes, not long-term solutions. A crisis is not the time to be planning for the future, it's about surviving to the next month. Conservative ideas are about fixing America in the long run, vs. liberal ideas about looting it in the short run. Anything the GOP can do to defuse this crisis, and avoid future crises, will put us in a better position for the future. Perversely, Obama and the Democrats want crises, because that's when it's easier to get what they want. They will continue to put America in crisis, and blame the GOP. That's their plan. We need a way to mock it, not just here on AoS, but in a way we can communicate to the mainstream.

What I don't get is why everybody keeps harping about what a crappy hand the Republicans have. They're the only ones even trying to get even a little fiscal responsibility (which the public seems to be for), they were specifically voted in exactly for that, and the media will blame them for everything and anything, no matter what. Why should they give a single inch?

Most of the public couldn't even tell you what the "fiscal cliff" is. People also keep saying how the public has turned left, because Obama got re-elected, but Romney won the Independents, and 2/3 of the white vote. All 2012 told us is that minorities will turn out to vote for the non-white candidate, no matter how much that candidate has cost them, or how incompetent and anti-American they are. Most don't even know what the economic issues are, or simply don't care. They were even offended by his gay marriage turnaround.

301 Ansar al-Sharia, the Islamist militia linked to the deadly terror attack against the United States diplomatic compound in Benghazi, continues to operate Facebook pages and conduct fundraising and proselytize in Libya, according to U.S. officials. Intelligence reports provided to the U.S. Africa Command earlier this month revealed that Ansar al-Sharia operates several Facebook pages, including one outlet called the Campaigns of Ansar al-Sharia for Dawa and Charity. The website was operating as late as Dec. 15 before being shut down under pressure from the U.S. government. [...] I guess FB is were obama got his "good leads"

395 If you want everyone taxed fairly you need a tax on wealth. Something that includes all property and possessions/money in the bank. Tax it at.5%. Then the poor pay, the rich pay, everyone pays their fair share. Okay, I'll play. Let's take your proposal seriously. You are defining wealth as all property and possessions/money in the bank. How is that to be assessed? Once? Annually? Do you believe it is fair to tax me once on my earnings and then again on the money if I leave it in the bank? Define possessions. Does that include my books? My blu-rays? My clothing? My kitchen utensils? If not, why not, if so, how do you intend to determine the value of those items? What about digital content? How shall an audit of my possessions be accomplished? Must I permit a representative of the Federal government to have access to each and every one of my possessions? How do you intend to perform such an audit of the entire country? Is it your intent to destroy all consumer spending? After all, if I am to be taxed on my possessions, the obvious answer is to possess nothing. What about after market sales? Let us say that I purchase a video game. I then trade it in. Person B purchases that game with after tax funds and pays sales tax on that purchase. Does s/he then have to also pay that .5% possession tax? Why? That item has already been taxed based upon my possession of it.
