Here's a fun e-voting story. Wash DC offcials double-dog-dared hackers to subvert their e-voting system. Gave them a 3 week window.

The team also managed to guess the login details for the terminal server used by the voting system. This wasn't exactly difficult, since the user name and password were both "admin".

...

Finally, they inserted the word "owned" onto the final signoff screen of the voting page, and set up the University of Michigan football fight song to play after 15 seconds.

It took two days before the authorities discovered they'd been pwned, and they were only alerted to that fact when another tester told them the system was secure, but that they should lose the music on the sign-off screen, as it was rather annoying.

5 Nothing that allows access by sign in can be made hacker proof. All you can do is slow them down enough to make it not worthwhile.

That is the purpose of fences and locks.  They keep honest people honest and slow down the others enough to to either make it not worthwhile or to allow human intervention.

6 Re vote hacking, the dems will snicker; the Repubes will ignore it, like always.  From the recent TrueTheVote webinar, one of the frequently made comments belittling the impact of voter fraud mentions the fact that 10 million votes separated Ogabe from McLame.  The typical commenter says, "You can't have voter fraud with a margin like that, so you're just wasting your time."  To wit, the TTV founder replied, "There are 200,000 polling places in the U.S.  If 50 fraudulent votes are cast at each, you've just stolen the election."

41 Great, if the nation is smart enough to turn out the Stuttering Clustrerfuck of a Miserable Tyrant the liberals will cry vote fraud. Dems don't even need to hack into machines to cheat, they just bus students across state borders to same day register and vote places for pre-voting and then bus their core believers around to multiple precincts with a list of dead people's names in the "voter ID is racist" places. GOP face consequences when caught cheating and aren't even sure they want to win. If they want to secure the machines all it would take is if they would require a pair of crypocard passwords to log on and split the cards to a representative from each major party. Easy peasy so of course it wont happen.

52 2-3 years ago, I saw about one or two food stamp cards a day at work.  These days, I see about twenty to thirty, in the same amount of time.  Keep in mind that this is a convenience store (hooray Obama Economy, have to keep the job you have no matter how crappy), with prices that border on ludicrous.

This is where our tax money is going, and it's time we stopped accepting things like this and started fighting back.  We, the working stiffs that keep this country running, are going to be eaten out of house and home if we don't find a way to stop the welfare state gravy train.

The future of this Republic depends on all of our efforts to put an end to this kind of naked graft and find workable solutions that get people off their asses and back to work.

You don't even have to go that far.  These same states run their lotteries, which dispense millions of tickets on a daily basis and give away billions of dollars.  I have never heard of anyone hacking the state Lotto computer or a ticket being forged or a legitimate claim of a ticket not being recorded ... they know exactly how many winning tickets were purchased the second the number is drawn, and from which stores.  These same states claim they can't run a secure voting system that differs little from their numbers racket except that it is actually one of the few responsibilities the government actually has (unlike running numbers, which they do with no problem).

Only on their face.  Secure and accurate real-time tabulation of preferences is what they both are - well ... only the numbers racket is real-time.  The voting system has the wall of 80 year old ladies defending initial entry.

Voting and the numbers racket software are not all that different in what they actually do.

121 The typical commenter says, "You can't have voter fraud with a margin like that, so you're just wasting your time." To wit, the TTV founder replied, "There are 200,000 polling places in the U.S. If 50 fraudulent votes are cast at each, you've just stolen the election."

Posted by: RushBabe, severely conservative at March 04, 2012 01:05 PM (tQHzJ)

It's worse than that example implies because Electoral College votes, not popular vote, determine the outcome. Voter fraud in a relatively few swing states can shift an election. One hundred thousand fraudulent votes, strategically distributed, could change an election's result.

Also, I think it was Newt Gingrich who used to point out that credit card companies and banks do zillions of transactions a day very safely, yet we don't have a good way to verify Social Security numbers and things for employment and immigration purposes.

I *think* it was around the time his Big Idea was making the healthcare system more efficient with electronic records, computerized prescriptions (as opposed to a doctor's scribbles) and things like that.

Maybe someone with a better memory can elaborate or correct me.  Newt's had so many ideas that it's hard to keep track.  He'd really be a better pundit or columnist or something that candidate or elected official. (Yes, I know he was a Fox News contributor for a while.  He didn't have his own show, though.)

Santorum and Gingrich (and Perry, and...) really dropped the ball by not being on every ballot.

Well, "dropped the ball" is a little harsh.  It takes money and staffing, which really only Romney has actually had.  The experience of having run before (which Romney and Paul share) helps a lot too.

So, yeah, I'm pretty resigned to the idea of Nominey.  I figure that if he can win the primary without my supptort, well, then.

Such a shame. If we'd had a halfway decent field, the general election would almost be in the bag by now. As it is, I don't know that any of them are especially electable in and of themselves.  Contrasted to Obama, okay, we have a shot.  But it's always better to have a positive, affirmative reason to vote *for* instead of *against.*

140 long jail sentences for cheaters.

Posted by: Truman North at March 04, 2012 01:24 PM (I2LwF)

Yet another score by the corruptocrats -- small chance of penalty.  First of all, you better hope there's an "R" AG in the state who will even press charges.  Then you'll need a judge who wasn't appointed by a "D" to even give them significant jail time.

In Va., the current General Assembly actually added a few new penalties for voter fraud, but they didn't want them to take effect until 2013.  Epic minds at work.

154 "Government Irony" is actually the latest manifestation of dueling competencies.  That is where two  different agencies, both of whom are so competent in their respective areas of responsibility that we give them a monopoly on the use of force to oversee these areas, to make regulations having the weight of law, to even carry guns to enforce those regulations, and where two different competencies publish policy edicts that contradict each other, sometimes in ways that are dangerous to the safety of the public not to mention to our prosperity.

The previous best example of dueling competencies was when the government agency responsible for management of the water on the Missouri river mismanaged the level of water in its several massive upstream impoundments that it was forced to release record amounts to protect those dams.  This resulted in such flooding that high water endangered two nuclear power plants, which were sited on the river under the regulatory guidance of another competent government agency who was so competent that those plants would never have to worry about being flooded.

And yet some people want to place our health care totally in the hands of a brand new competent government agency.
