Frankenstein Turns Two [Truman North]
— Open Blogger

I am really surprised that the blog here allowed the second anniversary of the passage of Obamacare to pass without any sort of comemmoration at all.

While pretty much everything democrats said about it was a lie, and pretty much everything its opponents said about it has come true, there's one group that's left out of that prognosticating checklist: House Republicans.

On several occasions, and as recently as a year ago, the leadership have promised to defund the fluker. As the holders of the federal purse strings, they had every ability to just. not. pay. for. its. implementation.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

But as you may have already realized, implementation proceeds apace.

In other words, they fluking lied about it. THIS. The whole reason they're +67 House seats and closed the gap in the Senate.

We as a nation didn't send them there out of some sense of fairness or because we're feeling better about the color red on our electoral maps than we did in 2008. We sent them there to stop this fluker.

And in the one capacity where they could have done so, no questions asked, they simply failed to act.

If you were to ask Bone-Or and Can't-Or about it, they might candidly tell you that they didn't think it was a wise move because they would then be blamed for "shutting down the government" when the Senate and president and especially the blood-libel media pitched a fit over it. Yes, Bone-Or and Can't-Or probably would be blamed for it.

But that's what we sent you to do, your equivocating, feckless pantywaists: Stop it or die trying. Stop it. Or die trying.

This kind of political cowardice is unacceptable. It's the reason I am personally bearish on the prospect of the Republicans spending any political capital whatsoever in an attempt to repeal Obamacare. It's why when we hear the term "repeal and replace," depsite the fact nobody outside of the Beltway wants it replaced by anything any federal actor might come up with. They continue to insist upon the term. Even the Tea Party reps use it. Almost as if they've already given up on the prospect of just getting out of the way.

"Almost"? No. They haven't given up on the idea, because they've never contemplated it. They've never contemplated giving up power, just like Megan McCain has never contemplated going through the day without carrying an extra bag of chocolate muffins in her pocket, just in case.

I'm hoping the question ain't rhetorical: if House Republicans won't stand up to Obamacare now, then when?

Mark my words- No matter who is President and even if we end up with a 100% Republican House and Senate, Obamacare is not going away. If anything, it will get relabeled and that's about it.

22 If you think their lack of ... vigor... in opposing Obama care is dispiriting now.... Just wait until Romney is President. Romney won't push repeal, and neither will the Republicans. Obama care will harden into something as untouchable as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. It will never be repealed. Until the final collapse. In a sense, this is the argument for why it would be better for Obama to get re-elected, rather than Romney. Because if Obama is president, the right will still continue to resist Obama care. But not if Romney is elected. Just like the left opposed the war in Iraq when Bush was president, but not when Obama was elected.

Posted by: Justamom at March 23, 2012 05:48 AM (Sptt8)

28  Congress controls the purse strings. Not just the House. The House can pass a bill to defund Obamacare but it is just like their vote to repeal it. For that to actually happen it would still have to get through the Democrat controlled Senate and then be signed by the President. The House has voted 26 times to defund or repeal part or the whole of Obamacare. So your criticism is unfounded. They have done what they said they would do. But they aren't the only ones involved.

That fact that the House hasn't even considered defunding this POS bill that no one wants is a testament to the failure of Crying Boehner's leadership.

WTF is he afraid of? Why not do what the majority of us want done and defund it? Isn't that, like, what they're supposed  to be doing?

And if they want to replace it with something, how about letting the free market do it all by itself by opening up interstate insurance markets nationwide and trying a bit of deregulation for once?

We need a thorough Housecleaning and soon. Ditto the Senate. Crying Boehner and Bitch McConnell need  to go, ASAP.

39 Waste, your incorrect. Those were useless, symbolic votes. They knew that language had no hope of passing the Senate. 92 I have always been sick, and doctors tend to order a lot of tests for me.  Because of that, I have been assigned an insurance case worker so I don't have to go through all the red tape.  To get that, I actually watched my insurance statements and informed them of anything that they were charged for, that I wasn't tested for.  I saved them lots of money, and now they save me a lot of time.

Anyway, I was told that if I should hint to my doctor that if there are any tests that they think might be useful for me, to order them now, this year. (She said a lot of doctors have long term testing plans because they think insurance won't cover them all.) She told me that next year, all bets are off - my premium could triple, tests will not be oked, etc. I asked her if she meant if BO was re-elected. She said, 'No. Too much of Health Care Act has already been implemented.  The effects are going to show up next year - after the election this November.'

I cried like a baby when I hung up.  This is my insurance company telling me this. Fuck. Shit. Damn.

He said their country would never vote NH out because they would be voting themselves out of jobs. Well shit, we already have half our voters receiving free money from the govt. Our doctors will be legally bound to only give the care the govt allows and no more. It will take longer to see a primary doc and specialist, treatments will be planned for cost containment instead of best outcome, and doctors will be sued for poor outcomes even tho they have to practice with one hand tied behind their back.

That's just stupid, Drew.

1) The House controls the Purse Strings.  All spending must go through the House.
2) The Republicans have had several chances to "shut down the Government" on which they've passed.  I think it would have taken no more than one of those to at least get some of the worst bits of OCare stalled.
3) Every time a fight arises, we're reminded that we don't control the WH or Senate- as though that absolves the House of its responsibilities.

We elected them to stop this behemoth, not to give us excuses why they can't.

GHWBush clarified what "No New Taxes" means to the Republican Leadership. Not only do Neoconservative Republicans refuse to cut spending, they do vote new taxes fees and fines. Worse yet, they keep spending, augmenting current levels (higher than Obama's unprecedented rate) .

Neoconservatives will NEVER cut spending. And they will force taxpayers to continue bailing out their own unprecedented ruin of the national and world economy, refinancing globalist finance industry FRAUD, spreading global warfare all the while.

GWBush and Paulson made clear that Republicans are raping America. That they do it with a smile, and expect a "thank you" in return, "Miss Me Yet" is the rapist taunting the victim. It took GWBush to get an Obama elected. Obamalite "Repo Man" isn't going to be any different than another Bush administration without the Bush name. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that Obamacare facilitates the type of “liberation” that the “Founders had in mind” because it allows you to quit your job and become a “photographer,”  a “writer,” a “musician”--or “whatever.”

“As you hear from these stories, this is a liberation,” Pelosi said at a Capitol Hill news conference Thursday.

“This is what our founders had in mind--ever expanding opportunity for people.

“You want to be a photographer or a writer or a musician, whatever --  an artist, you want to be self-employed, if you want to start a business, you want to change jobs, you no longer are prohibited from doing that because you canÂ’t have access to health care, especially because you do not want to put your family at risk,” she said.

You file your taxes for 2013 with no proof of insurance. The government kicks your return out, requiring that proof. You don't provide it, so they issue a fine. 155 Ya mean besides killing the 3 French Soldiers?

No- that would qualify.  Well, actually I'd throw that in with "commit murder," if they knew he'd been the one to do that.

I thought they discounted him (well, all muzzies, really) since those soldiers were also Muslim.  So they, then, had reason to arrest him- but they didn't believe they did because they weren't looking at him for that crime.  If you see what I'm saying, there.

If the did suspect him for that crime, then they absolutely fell down on the job.  But I can also see the (wrongheaded, liberal fantasyland) reason that would explain why they wouldn't "like him" for those first murders.

Ya mean besides killing the 3 French Soldiers?

I think the comment was what did he do before that. I initially had the "ummm killing people" response but then I reread the quote and realized the discussion was about the time between release and the killing spree, not the spree itself.

You file your taxes for 2013 with no proof of insurance. The government kicks your return out, requiring that proof. You don't provide it, so they issue a fine. You don't pay the fine, they start putting liens on everything you own, seize your bank accounts and in general make you either pay up or go Galt. But you won't be able to sell anything (the liens) without their cut first."

170 ObamaCare will not be overturned so long as voters don't keep screaming for its complete removal.

The Tea Party manifested itself over ObamaCare.

The Tea Party neoconservatives have held to their Bush course as rigidly as Rumsfeld held to no build up of forces. But one feature to monopolize is the stubborn refusal to admit defeat -- at least to maintain opposition to ObamaCare as long as the Afghanistan US War effort, 10 years and running.

The Tea Party Vote is a movement that won't roll over and die just because the master ordered the dog to play dead.

Screw the Republican Leadership for not counting your vote. Persist! Vote in new Constitutional Republicans advocating for LOCAL GOVERNANCE and less federal abusive power in America.

Every region has primaries in the offing. In Central Texas, RETIRE John Carter, R-TX, establishment trained dog, all bark and no bite out of federal spending and corruption. Vote Eric Klingemann into Congress for smaller government and lower taxes, and Ted Cruz for Senate (though I have no faith in Dick Armey Freedom Works).

I'm sorry, but Truman is just wrong about this.  We don't have the Senate and as long as that mofo Harry Reid is in charge of it, anything the GOP tried to do to de-fund any of Obamacare was going to fail.  Both of Paul Ryan's budgets have de-funded it.  Both budgets passed the House.  What the hell else are they supposed to do?

Mitch McConnell said yesterday that if the GOP wins control of the Senate, its first vote in 2013 is going to be repeal of Obamacare.   That's a pretty black-letter promise.  Nothing has been done yet that can't be undone; sure, the money that has been spent can't be recovered, but that is small beans compared to stopping the tsunami of spending that is yet to come if it isn't repealed.

What President Romney needs to do is enlist Rick Perry and Chris Christie to convene the governors and work out a plan for the states to take over a lot of health care reform, to get a model law that will open up health insurance to interstate marketing with continued state regulation, etc.  Then lead the charge to repeal the PPACA, repeal the employer tax deduction for health insurance, enact a 100% tax credit for individuals to buy a catastrophic health insurance policy, and put Americans in charge of their own health care.

177 He was already a suspected Jihadist who was deported from Afghanistan, supposedly under observation, had serious complaints lodged against him by his neighbors, had a criminal record, and was an all around scumbag.

And?  Did they have any evidence that those "serious complaints" were worthy of criminal charges?  Someone above said he'd kidnapped his neighbor's kid.  If that's true (I don't entirely believe it), then- again- they fell down on the job.  Kidnapping is a criminal offense and he should have been in jail.

But.  Just being a scumbag with a criminal record is not actually a reason to be incarcerated, once you've been freed.  If it were, cops would re-arrest parolees and convicts with completed sentences just on general principles.  And, again, on the 3 soldiers murdered- I can see why their first assumption would not have been a known Jihadist.  I think it's blindness- probably willful blindness- to reality, but I do at least understand it.

Posted by: packsoldier at March 23, 2012 10:54 AM (9tLNI) 50 state waiver on day one would do a lot. What if we dont get a super majority R senate.. there is nothing but a waiver the President can do. Not a majority.. a super majority is needed to repeal Obamacare: http://tinyurl.com/ybtjkbf

So we get a Government shutdown, Obama still refuses to budge, get some slapped together compromise that still doesn't stop it, go on to lose the House, gain no control in the Senate and have Obama re-elected. That's a brilliant plan.

Two years, and Breitbart's cash offer to anyone with video proof of this has never been claimed.

The only "proof" they felt was necessary was that Congressman John Lewis said they did "and why would he lie".

Well, for starters he's a politician. When Lewis testifies, does he get a pass from taking an oath because he's incapable of lying?

>>  The House controls the Purse Strings. All spending must go through the House.

This gets repeated many times in different ways, but Article 1 Section 8 says "The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

not "The House of Representatives"

All spending must go through both houses, and can originate in either.

228 @224 and ease up on the insults of conservatives. -- Across the board when referencing Ron Paul or his supporters, you know; the ones who don't count when ballots are counted in Maine, etc.? ---- Ron Paul gets tarred by the brush of his more vigorous and vocal supporters who seem to be, by in large, ill-informed pot-heads intent on disrupting the GOP primary process and destroying the Party. Heck, most of them are not even Republicans. When I am feeling generous, I ask myself if that's "fair" to Rep. Paul... but then I realize that surely after all of these years in office, Rep. Paul should be able to get some adults to take charge of his campaign and either teach those kids how to behave or tell them to STFU. The fact is that Rep. Paul's national support is so weak, he relies on these wackos. Otherwise he'd go the way of Gary Johnson and make even less headway in the primary.

Remind me again when the last actual budget was passed...

But yeah- they could've held the debt ceiling vote hostage over Obamacare.  And if you believe that it would've resulted in Obamacare being repealed and/or Republicans coming out ahead politically, you're insane.

In the real world (and not the very very angry Fantasyland that some of you are currently occupying), the end result would be that Obamacare would remain and we'd have handed the Dems a huge political win.

The reason that Cantor and Boehner didn't choose to die on the Obamacare hill is because they'd be dead, but the enemy would easily have held the hill and emerged in a position to win the war.

First of all, "government shutdown" is a joke that most people won't notice. Secondly, if you assume that everyone's going to side with the Democrats every time there's a showdown then why are we even bothering to oppose them? Let's all just bend over and vote for Obama.

238 Repeal of Obamacare is pretty popular beyond the base. Yeah, there are a few things the general public says they want to keep (hence the "Replace" lingo), but it's not like dumping Obamacare is a "hair on fire" fringe issue.

Know what's not very popular beyond the base?  Shutting down the government unless conditions that everyone knows would never be agreed to are met.

There seems to be a lot of revisionism regarding Newt's goverment shutdown.  Republicans lost that battle, and lost big.  They gained almost nothing in terms of taxes and spending and lost politically amongst the voters.  It should serve as a warning, not a blueprint.

If Obama can grant waivers to Obamacare (he's granted about 1,200 or so last I saw), why can't a Republican president?
Posted by: packsoldier

Brought up this issue a few weeks ago,

Authority to issue waivers and the like are typically explicitly delineated in a bill.  That why you see something like "pursuant to" and a reference to the statutory authority that allows the waiver in the accompaning Presidential statement.

Apparently, Obamacare doesn't have that explicit authority, and Obama and the HHS have issued waivers under the 'ol "broad interpretation" "we'll do it till you stop us" rule. Discussed here: thedc.com/lZc9ej

So arguably, Romney probably can't issue waivers, and if he does, they'll be challenged in court under the "only Republicans have to obey the law" law.

NO entitlement scheme will ever work.  You cannot take X value out of the economy, spend Y on bureaucratic oversight and have > X-Y left to spend on whatever.

And the WEAK ASS SHIT lawfare and intelfare re. WWIV continues to be just pathetic.  The guy went from France to Afghanistan to join the Taliban.  Karzai's govt. should have thrown him in Unlawful Combatant prison until they've won or negotiated a settlement and exchanged him.  If he was trying to join AQ we should have grabbed him, squeezed him, thrown him in Gitmo to rot.  Instead he runs all over and the French lose him after they knew multiple times from multiple sources he was a problem.

A real shutdown, no. A "shutdown" like the one nobody noticed in 1995, yes.

Let's get Willard in office first, try and pick up some Senate seats, and then do the damage when it's actually possible.

How will electing Willard change anything? As long as the Democrats have 41 seats in the Senate they can force a "shutdown."

Posted by: schizoid at March 23, 2012 07:42 AM (yFER9)

254 I agree with the article. However, the wild card IS the media, which will spin every situation in favor or the Democrats. There are many people that get their news from headlines in the newspapers and from their local nightly news. Regardless of why, if Republicans shut down the government it will be portrayed as a horrible thing. My hope is that after this election, with control of the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government, O-care will be dismantled, defunded and removed from existence. No one likes high unemployment or high gas prices either. But as long as they're here, it helps our chances in 2012.

260 I was at lunch and they had some financial news show up and a Obamacare person from Kansas was up there talking about how great Obamacare already was.

Obamanut: "Well it's doing a great job extending coverage to younger kids (I guess 26 is a kid) who couldn't afford insurance or didn't have a job that provided that benefit so I think that's really a great thing."

Anchor woman: "Has Obamacare made any impact yet on the healthcare costs in Kansas?"

Obama-nut: "Well it is supposed to provide LONG TERM savings later down the road (and when we say long term savings we really mean long term losses).  So, naturally it is too soon for it really do much in terms of cost savings."

Anchor Woman: "And you talk about extending coverage to young adults but aren't the parents still having to pay the dependent costs on the coverage? I mean were talking about how we are extending coverage to young people who otherwise wouldn't have insurance but don't we have to keep in mind that somebody somewhere still has to pay for that coverage?"

Obama-nut: "Well yes, the plan holder certainly has to pay the additional premiums for the dependents on their plan.  If they don't pay for the coverage then well they won't be covered.  But the costs to the healthcare system remain low because young people don't really get sick all that often or that seriously so it doesn't really add much additional cost.(oh great! Mom and Dad get the luxury to continue paying for their kids coverage longer for something they don't really need -- just swell!)"

In other words, it hasn't saved us any money yet and it extends services to people who don't really need them.  That's just swell!

All appearances would indicate that the Republicans in the Senate will not go for any repeal of Obamacare, SCOTUS will not consider the mandate unconstitutional, and we are stuck with it.   Along the Greece vein, the wealthy will inevitably hide their income, and the Fisk will suffer.  When there is massive government tyranny, the productive will find away around it. Count on it.

263 Romney made that statement and then expanded it to repealing the entire bill and starting over. What's wrong with that statement anyway in the general sense at the time. Keeping the good parts of something and getting rid of the bad parts is reasonable. Fortunately Romney has come to the decision that any good parts , if any, in Obamacare aren't worth the consequences. Repealing and starting over is his position now.
