December 17, 2012
— Open Blogger Ace has graciously invited me to be a guest blogger during the Great Vacation of 2012 (actually, I begged and pleaded, and he finally got sick of my e-mails). I offered to write about one of my favorite topics, the politics of food, and, stunningly, he agreed! Lest you think that I am a rank amateur and have no particular insight or knowledge that might make my opinions worthy of this rarified readership – I have a blog! And as we all know, that confers an irrevocable badge of expertise. Freedom is a topic near and dear to all of our hearts, and there are few areas of our day-to-day lives that are controlled more tightly by government than what we eat and drink. The Feds have their dirty little paws in our food, through the marvelously efficient Department of Agriculture and the FDA (and the Department of Education just loves them some dictatorial power too). Every state, and most municipalities have large bureaucratic systems in place to control food production, sale and service. Of course they have the jackbooted thugs of law enforcement to make sure that little Jimmy and Sally donÂ’t sell lemonade on the corner without an inspection certificate, food-handling certificate, business license and a fully plumbed facility inspected by the building department.
But all of these organizations, which I see as the tip of the spear of totalitarianism, have yet to manage the holy grail of big government; getting into our heads and directing exactly what we buy with our food dollar. And that’s the big problem. They rail about bad choices and Big Agriculture controlling what we eat, but the reality is that America has at its fingertips the greatest variety of food the world has ever known. Even ghetto markets have relatively inexpensive produce and other “healthy” choices that dwarf the choices our parents and grandparents had. But according to our overlords in Washington, we are choosing badly. And how do they know that? Because we are fat.
But we arenÂ’t fat because we sit on our lazy asses and watch 500 channels of TV instead of going to the park with our kids. We arenÂ’t fat because cars are so damned inexpensive that even our poor own one (or two) and drive instead of walk.
No, we are fat because ConAgra puts high fructose corn syrup in our cereal, instead of pure, natural unadulterated sugar. We are fat because Safeway markets high-margin, high-calorie products in the center aisles of their markets. We are fat because McDonalds has the temerity to serve an egg, some bacon, and a slice of cheese on a biscuit*Â….and charge only $1.79 for it! We are fat because New York City delis have the murderous habit of selling large containers of soda.
But one thing is certain; we arenÂ’t fat because the government, in its infinite wisdom, decided to pimp a high carbohydrate, low fat diet to the American people, based on nothing more than some poorly designed studies and anecdotal evidence that eating fat must make you fat. And we arenÂ’t fat because our schools (remember the Department of Education?) have systematically decreased the amount of time available for our childrenÂ’s play, and limited that play to non-violent activities like watching videos and learning how to put condoms on bananas.
The clear message from the benevolent dictators is that we are incapable of making rational choices for ourselves, and that they must guide our every decision – in the best interest of the herd of course.

Seems like there were a lot fewer fat people...back when nearly everyone was smoking.
Back in the 70's and 80's, you would see people in jogging suits, jogging down the side of the road with a cigarette in their hand.
Now, people are sitting around playing with computers and eating.

Speaking of food, does anyone have any suggestions for high protein snacks that DON'T involve nuts? I'm deathly allergic to peanuts, but peanut butter of some kind of peanut ingredient is pretty standard in most protein bars and the like. And most nuts that I would buy come with the disclaimer that they've been packed in a facility that also processes peanuts. Having gone to the hospital at least once for ingesting some peanut residue from a bottled smoothie (and another time having a reaction from a single jelly bean), I'd prefer to stay away from such warnings.
Suggestions?

Then the holidays came, I stopped and put back on about 10lbs. (Sadly) oh and I kept (stupidly) paying them hoping I'd start back up again (I never did.)
Now I'm going to try gold ol' fashioned exercise once the weather warms up a bit.

Fat is one of the building blocks needed for testosterone, which leads to leaner muscle mass... along with MAN type behaviours....

Carbs are the body's main source of energy, so if you don't get a lot of sustenance, or if you do a lot of exertive activity during the day, they're the best bang for your buck. If you don't use them up, though, they just get turned in to fat, and it takes forever to get the fat burned off.

It's not just HFCS which is difficult to burn off, it's the amount of sugar added too EVERYTHING.
BTW alcohol is refined sugar unfortunately.

I must profess that, for me, cottage cheese is best plain or on top of some pineapple rings. Other fruits, no; most of them are much too sweet. But the tartness of the pineapple goes well with the creaminess of the cottage cheese.

Anaerobic pathway isn't a total answer, but it isn't a 0 either. Building muscle mass causes your at rest and low exertion activities to burn more calories.

I used to be like that. Then I thought about it, and I realized that in my head it wasn't really the home, it was the life style I thought went WITH the home: vacations in Paris, antiques tastefully displayed, swimming pool in the back yard, expensive car, etc. etc.
Once I realized that, I decided it was silliness. If I want to go to Paris I can save up money and go. I own antiques from years of collecting. My subdivision has a pool. I don't want an expensive car as I like my Jeep Cherokee.
Ask yourself WHY you think you want one of those houses. I bet it is not really for wanting the large square footage, but rather something you think goes with it.

I've never really understood the allure of a huge house. All I see when I see these enormous mansions in Rye or Portsmouth is a shitload of rooms that need to be dusted, vacuumed, polished, and just generally kept tidy. That's my definition of a nightmare. And yes, if you're rich you can hire maids. But what if the maids you hire are OWS supporters who slowly rob you blind, but you never notice because you spend all your time in three rooms and never venture into the other twenty-seven? Then one day you go to fetch Grandma's silver from the cabinet in the guest room and realize that not only the silver is missing, but so is the cabinet, the bedclothes, and the window glass.

That actually makes a lot of sense.
I actually just bought a home that was larger (in SQ FT) than my parents (or my wife's parents.) My grandpa just wandered around the house going "it's so big?!" (It's really not that big, it's just under 2400 sqft, but the room layout makes it seem enormous, and our tiny furniture only makes that worse.)
In any case, in order to afford said house we had to do 3 things 1) Buy during the crash 2) but slightly outside the area we wanted (still a good area, just a bit of a compromise on driving) and 3) go older than we wanted (1960s house, which incurs more upkeep, and less cool features.)
I do occasionally find myself wanting a "big house" (but then I realize that what I want is a late 90s early 2000s house with a different floor plan and walkout basement, not bigger.)

Which state is that? Because I've always been told in Missouri it's a requirement that it be taken. (And that was even in hourly positions where I wouldn't be "leaving early" I'd leave when my shift was up. And there was no benefit to the place if I did take it.)
Heck once when I was in fast food they made me clock out 45 minutes before my shift was over, for the break out of fear they'd get in trouble. (They had originally planned to just send me home an hour early.)

I'm in OK. Don't confuse company policy with state law, though. Even with us they threatened to change company policy so that we'd have to take lunch, but they never followed through. It's the nature of the work we do, I believe.

You do not want to see me try to walk in snowshoes. You jsut don't. Bigfoot laughs at how ridiculous I look.
And it's really less the snow than the ice.
Practice. Plus, lots of snowshoes have built-in crampons.

Why We Get Fat And What to do About It
I don't get a commission, but I did lose 37 pounds, and am keeping it off.
Also get a lot of the science, and the history behind the current insanity.

I do. But you might be required to come in contact with nuts. Or jerks. Or, possibly, your husband, but that isn't necessary.

Make your own. One of the kids food classes I teach, the kids design their own cup of granola.
Most use a half cup of oatmeal as a base (but I've seen at least a couple of recipes that use rice crispies or chex). Choose from honey, agave or molasses as a binder. Toss in whatever you like from dry fruits, coconuts, chocolate chips. You can add bran or whatever other healthy bit that you're needing in your diet. Measurements aren't precise - you want a cookie dough consistency. I spoon mine into bite size balls on my desk - The kids like to leave their in a disposable cup to carry out the door to school with them to finish eating before class.
Are you allergic to other nuts such as walnuts, almonds or pecans? Using a small food processor, you can make your own nut butters using a cup of nuts, a couple of dashes of salt, some honey and about a teaspoon of olive oil at a time for viscosity.
If you shop at a place that offers bulk, it's not too expensive to start creating your own cereal, oatmeal and granola mixes with ingredients that target your current nutritional needs.

The last part of this is really important (it's all great though, and thanks to CBD for posting it!)
Our schools have systematically eliminated physical education and recess, becayse idiot administrators and government have decided our kids are getting dumber and need to spend more time in class and less time in the gyn or outside. Not only is this making kids fat and lazy, it is also denying naturally rambunctious and energetic boys an opportunity to get that energy out of them through physical activity. This affects their behavior in class - just ask any first or second grade teacher. It is also turning young Alpha males into Beta males -- and denying the process by which Alpha males get identified. This invariably leads to bullying and other undesirable behavior by boys, in and out of school.
Lack of physical exercise may also have an impact on the brain development of young children. I know it's anecdotal, but my son started school with a bunch of boys that all played sports, even if it was tae kwon do, and every single one of them gradiated high school with high honors and got into top colleges. Only one of them is a scholarship athlete, and because of his grades he was recruited by Notre Dame and other top academic schools. My son, on the other hand, dropped sports when he was 12 and ended up with mediocre grades and did not get into the top-tier college he wanted to.
My daughter played soccer through 7th grade, and ran track in 8th grade, and was in great shape. Then she quit sports and within a year had gained 15 pounds and started hating herself. She picked up with soccer again last spring and started running on her own, took a dance class, and started watching her diet just a little (less carbs, more salads) and lost that entire 15 pounds. Now she feels great about herself and understands that she needs to step away from the computer and get outside. And she got a 4.15 GPA in her first semester of high school.
If we want to talk about changes in our culture and society that have produced young men who go shoot up elementary schools, we also need to look at this: boys need lots of physical activity when they are little, and when they are bigger. Turning generations of boys into couch potatoes has not only made them more likely to be fat, it has made them dumber, more likely to do badly in school, become introverted, get bullied, and feel bad about themselves.

2400 sq ft house IS a big house. The last numbers I saw was that the average new home was 1700 sq ft and that is up from several years previous.

The education system has a guilty hand in influencing the poor choices we all end up making. What was the first institution to begin training children to stand in a line for their food everyday instead of bringing our meals from home? From an early age, we become indoctrinated that it's just easier to let someone else hand us a tray of food rather than take ownership and prepare it ourselves. Universities further diminish those choices with their forced housing policies and communal dining halls (both university profit centers). During those great years where we first live away from home and are learning those lifetime habits - young adults are discouraged from providing and preparing their own meals. ..... And we wonder why those lines at the fast food window are so long?
I noticed a couple of other people who for one reason or another cut fast food out of their regular diets. When the last young'un left for college last year, the hubster and I decided to move our office to the house and cut some expenses. Even though we were pretty strict brown baggers, we still treated ourselves to a carry out lunch once or twice a week. After we moved to the house, we practically stopped eating out.
Among the things that have surprised us:
When we do get the craving for a Bacon Cheese Whataburger - it doesn't really taste that good anymore.
The last two times that we ordered out - we ended up sharing. The portions really were just too much.
We're much healthier - at first we didn't notice that we were having fewer sour stomachs and intestinal discomfort. As time went on and we occasionally treat ourselves, almost inevitably one of us ends up spending some quality time in the lavatory.
Cost - Just can't say enough about the money you don't even realize you're saving. Even when you're cost conscious - it can still be an eye opener.
Sodas - I do enjoy my occasional soda, but have to say that if you start making your own sodas - you'll be greatly surprised at how great they can taste. You can use real sugars and create your own recipes. Recently using coupons and rebates, I picked up a commercial soda carbonator for half price and now use it with my own syrups.

beef jerky, Boar's Head turkey pepperoni, Slim a Bear (no sugar added only!) Klondike bars (not really HP, but ok 1x a day). Or cook a rump roast, cut into cubes, add julienne onions and parsley and drench in Waldorf Farms no carb, no cal , no sugar balsamic vinaigrette dressing. refrigerate. very tasty.

At their 60th anniversary party, asked my mother-in-law's sister's husband how he and his old lady met. He said my mother in law and her sister used to haul water from a well in town out to their farmhouse, which was two miles away (for whatever reason, their well wasn't good drinking water). He said when he was driving up and down the road, he used to see them, trudging along the road, aged 14 and 15 at the time, carrying two five-gallon pails apiece (that's in the neighborhood of forty pounds in each hand, although obviously the pails weren't totally full). He felt sorry for them and used to stop and pick them up (he was about 16 at the time and drove a grain truck for a local elevator, and was also up and down that road in his father's farm truck as well). He decided he liked the sister quite a bit, and they married when she was 16 and he was 18.
That'll keep you skinny, hauling about 80 pounds of water two miles twice a day. Not even counting the two mile walk into town.
