Friday Evening Open Thread
— DrewM

Because content is way overrated and it's Happy Hour on the east coast.

Not overrated? Gratuitous sales pitches because....Capitalism!

If you're interested in keeping track of the electoral college race (and my gosh, who isn't?), there's an ap for that!

It's something my business partner put together and it allows you to make your predictions for the race and post them to faceebook and Twitter. You can make multiple predictions as the race changes and the country becomes a sea of red.

You can get the Android version here and the hot off the digital press version for Kindle Fire. iPhone and iPad versions are coming soon, swearsies.

Just for the record, I cleared promoting this here with Ace and a part of each sale will go to Mr. Ewok (full disclosure: he said he didn't want that but I'm insisting).

BTW, the Opening Ceremonies for the Olympics are going on now. The recurring thing I've from people in other parts of the world watching it live or in the US via live streams is "weird". I may actually have to watch it tonight.

15 I won't be watching the Olympics. All the pre-games hype from NBC -- plus the presence of fuckwads Matt Lauer, Lyin' Brian Williams and the rest of that pathetic bunch -- absolutely spoiled it for me before the first athlete (or, as they say on ESPN, ath-a-lete) hit the field. The commercials from various companies telling us we have to love and root for all the ath-a-letes from all over the world 'cause, you know, rainbows and unicorns and shit, didn't help either.

I'd rather just go out for a Chick-Fil-A and sit back later to watch one of the cable channels.

16 white house weasel Pfeiffer now adds update. Unbelievable chutzpah. Since my post on the fact that the bust of Winston Churchill has remained on display in the White House, despite assertions to the contrary, I have received a bunch of questions -- so let me provide some additional info. The White House has had a bust of Winston Churchill since the 1960’s. At the start of the Bush administration Prime Minister Blair lent President Bush a bust that matched the one in the White House, which was being worked on at the time and was later returned to the residence.  The version lent by Prime Minister Blair was displayed by President Bush until the end of his Presidency.  On January 20, 2009 -- Inauguration Day -- all of the art lent specifically for President Bush’s Oval Office was removed by the curator’s office, as is common practice at the end of every presidency. The original Churchill bust remained on display in the residence. The idea put forward by Charles Krauthammer and others that President Obama returned the Churchill bust or refused to display the bust because of antipathy towards the British is completely false and an urban legend that continues to circulate to this day.

17 The Catholic family that owns a Colorado-based company won a court victory in their battle to stop the Obama administration from requiring them to provide insurance coverage for abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization and contraception, a mandate they say violates their religious beliefs and First Amendment rights.

Hercules Industries, a Denver-based heating ventilation and air conditioning manufacturer that employs nearly 300 full-time workers, got an injunction in federal court which stops enforcement of the controversial ObamaCare mandate. The company's lawyers said they needed the injunction immediately because if the mandate is enforced, it must begin immediately making changes to its health plan, which renews on Nov. 1.

The case is similar to ones brought by Catholic-based colleges that have refused to provide employee insurance with such coverage, except this time, it is a secular corporation.

In his order, Colorado District Judge John Kane said that the government’s arguments “are countered, and indeed outweighed, by the public interest in the free exercise of religion."

The case still must be aired out in court, but lawyers representing Hercules savored the temporary victory.

“Every American, including family business owners, should be free to live and do business according to their faith. For the time being, Hercules Industries will be able to do just that,” said Matt Bowman, legal counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom, the Arizona-based organization representing the Newlands. “The bottom line is that Congress and the Constitution explicitly protect all religious freedom. They don’t exclude family businesses.”

51 A controversy is brewing over whether the United States should break tradition and dip the American flag at the opening ceremony Friday night for the London Olympics-- despite the fact that doing so would violate US Flag Code. Scott Blackmun, the CEO of the United States Olympic Committee, told Reuters they were discussing the matter internally. "We've talked about that a little bit and you never know what is going to happen," Blackmun told the news agency. But later a spokesman for the USOC sent Fox News a statement calling the Reuter's report "not accurate." "We have made an official recommendation to the athlete, not to dip the flag," the spokesperson told Fox News. "We have also spoken to the athlete advisory committee and they are in agreement." They better fuckin not

I lost interest in the Olympics (and all respect for them) after those pathetic Seoul games.  I'd never seen such blatant and proud cheating in my life.  My opinion of South Korea went down the shitter, too.

I do watch parts.  I prefer the individual sports and like gymnastics (though I just like to watch them and don't bother worrying about the scoring, as none of it can be trusted), swimming, diving and track and field, but that's about it.

For the team sports, the Olympics can't even come close to comparing with any professional leagues, so they aren't worth jackshit, anyway.

I get a kick out of them putting tennis in the Olympics, as if anyone cares.  Right in between Wimbledon and the US Open.  LOL.

As to the rest of the goofy "sports" they now have ... WTF?

72 It all makes sense now: the Obama administration is a sitcom. A sitcom about a hip, glib, fraudulent "community organizer" from the Chicago streets who cons his way into being the President of the USA. His big mouth gets him into wacky shenanigans and his long-suffering staff have to constantly bail him out.

In this week's episode, "Preezy" sends a bust of Churchill back to the British embassy because it reminds him of his gruff old law-school professor who could tell when he was lying just by watching his lips move. But his staff, in an effort to protect him, make a duplicate bust. Now there's two busts and you'll be BUSTing with laughter as they try to keep track of which one has Michelle's cocaine stash inside it!

74 WUWT UPDATE:

IÂ’ve been advised by concerned friends that speculation on the nature of this announcement has gotten out of hand in the blogosphere, and that was not my intent. My intent was to give me time to work on something very important without the distraction of this blog, emails/twitter/facebook, etc.

As many of you know, running WUWT is a monumental task which I could not do without the help of many people. Even so, it still requires my constant attention.

First, I am well. This isnÂ’t a health issue for me or my family.

Second, my announcement has nothing to do with FOIA issues or other sorts of political or social theories being bandied about on other blogs.

It does however have something to do with one of my many projects, it is still a “major announcement” and it has important implications that I’m sure everyone will want to know about.

I greatly appreciate all the concern and interest, and I look forward to being able to share all my work on Sunday. – Anthony

94 For the team sports, the Olympics can't even come close to comparing with any professional leagues, so they aren't worth jackshit, anyway. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at July 27, 2012 06:28 PM (X3lox) --After the breakup of the Soviet Bloc basketball lost its luster. The USA got cheated in '88 (as well as in '72) and the Dream Team kicked ass, but it was not the same with the USSR and Yugoslavia broken up. The hockey rivalries are good, though, at least if the home country is into it. Women's hockey seriously needs to get competitive beyond Canada and the USA to be interesting, though.

109 As for the US flag at the Olympics, the story is as follows.

In the 1908 games in Greece, the US flag bearer walked pass the stands and did not dip the US flag like other countries.  When asked why they did not dip the flag the reply supposedly went, "This flag bows to no one."

So of course the trans-nationals really hate the US for that.

Posted by: Tami at July 27, 2012 02:48 PM (X6akg)

137 78 It all makes sense now: the Obama administration is a sitcom.

Not bad.  You have to add that the other one has his Grandma Toot's ashes.  As for me, I've always thought Obama was Diane Chambers.

That'd be my guess.  O'Reilly has integrity compared to Morgan.

Modern political journalism is about access and it's amazing how long the MSM has clung to Obama.

They must really love him.

I liked the Olympics much more during the Cold War, when you know the Eastern Bloc was going to cheat; the fun was figuring out how.

When the Bulgarian women's swim team has 5-oclock shadow and paws the ground like a racehorse (and I assume, piss like one) .... when you knew the Soviet judge's vote was so head-slappingly corrupt that it almost made you laugh...... and my favorite, when Soviet weight lifter Vasily Alexiev used to pass on 2 of his 3 lifts, see what he had to beat, go out, hoist it, and go home.....

Now that was entertainment.

285 250 I think the US/NATO had in Turkey the Jupiter missile. Yes, and there were some in Italy too. In the mid-50s, the goal was the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM), which could hit Russia from the U.S. But it would take time to develop them, and in the meantime there was concern that the Russians could get them first. There was a real worry about a "nuclear Pearl Harbor" which we would have been powerless to stop. In those days there was no way to shoot down an ICBM. The U.S. would have been devastated, and all our bomber force would be able to do was retaliate. And airplanes could be shot down. As a stopgap measure, the Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) was developed. They were smaller, simpler, and only designed to have a range of about 1500 miles. Two different missiles, the Thor and Jupiter, were produced. Thors were forward based in England and the Jupiters went to Italy and Turkey. They had the ability to hit the Soviets in a matter of minutes. By 1962 the Atlas and Titan liquid-fueled ICBMs were being deployed, and the solid-fuel Minuteman was in development. The IRBMs had served their purpose and were no longer necessary.

337 291 Postscript: With the addition of upper stages, both the Thor and Jupiter were used in (unsuccessful) attempts to launch probes to the Moon in 1958 and 1959. The first two predated NASA and were conducted by the Air Force. The Thor first stage became the nucleus of the Delta rocket, which became a satellite-launching workhorse for NASA after 1960. Constantly enlarged and upgraded, it continued to fly for decades. Today's Delta IV is an entirely different rocket and is not a direct descendant of the Thor. The Jupiter's liquid oxygen tank was used as a component of the Saturn I, but it has no descendants today.

Close....children in hospital with nurses dancing around.

Posted by: Tami at July 27, 2012 04:21 PM (X6akg)

347 oops...hospital beds.

Posted by: Tami at July 27, 2012 04:21 PM (X6akg)

348 Hate to say it but the only thing that could liven up this funeral of an opening ceremony would be Mooslem err interaction.

349 322 ...

When I eventually return to my "Bond Villain" persona, should that happen, I shall have to find (or engineer) 6'3" twin ladies to be my honor guard.

350 Matt Lauer and Meredith Viera's coverage:  Worst Ever.

Meredith, watching the NHS bit, "Non of these kids look very sick to me."

Not long ago Drudge had a link to a story in London about a young boy dying of dehydration in a hospital there.

Matt talking about tucking his kids in bed....before he ducks out and chases Manhattan women.

These people are pathetic.

351 Anyone else watching the Olympic opening? I just turned it on and they're propagandazing their flippin' NHS. Really?

Posted by: Robert at July 27, 2012 04:38 PM (HWUv9)

352 Oh. Uh, I guess ya'll are watching the Olympics opening.

Posted by: Robert at July 27, 2012 04:38 PM (HWUv9)

353 God but this is so fucking gay. It's fucking Britain. All their opening should be is Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Judas Priest and a reunited Led Zepplin. Greatest opening ceremony ever. Instead it's even more embarassing than the Canadian Winter Olympics opening.

Posted by: Robert at July 27, 2012 04:41 PM (HWUv9)

354 Yeah Robert, and it's even more brutal than you can imagine. The theme to Exorcist was the high point so far. That's right the Exorcist.

Posted by: wierd flunky at July 27, 2012 04:43 PM (tlhtD)

355 Remember the Chinese cermonies? It might have been a paean to strong arm fascist nationalism, but they managed to put on a goddamned show.

Posted by: Robert at July 27, 2012 04:44 PM (HWUv9)

356 All the happy children dancing in their little hospital beds.  The hell?

And what looked like a bunch of jihadis came running through.

Dear gawd, Great Britain?  What's happened to you?

Yikes.  Matt Lauer just said, "I don't know whether that's cute, or creepy."

First honest thing he's said in years.

Posted by: Jane D'oh at July 27, 2012 04:44 PM (UOM48)

357 That's right the Exorcist. Posted by: wierd flunky at July 27, 2012 08:43 PM (tlhtD) I THOUGHT I recognized that. But I was like, "Nah, they wouldn't be playing the fcking EXORCIST theme!"

Posted by: Robert at July 27, 2012 04:45 PM (HWUv9)

358 Yes, Meredith, we know who fucking Mr. Bean is!

Posted by: Robert at July 27, 2012 04:47 PM (HWUv9)

359 Here's how my opening would look. Chicks dancing on poles. Heavy fucking metal. Pyro. Betch'er ass!

Posted by: Robert at July 27, 2012 04:49 PM (HWUv9)

360 They sing a lot of songs -- generally, about 3 bars of each. It goes on forever. Over 4 hours. The officials at the end with the flag was the worse for me.

361

WTF? Mr Bean is still a thing?

362 Anyone else watching the Olympic opening? I just turned it on and they're propagandazing their flippin' NHS. Really?

They have to tell themselves they love it.  Over and over again.

363 God bless you morons actually watching this. I just can't stomach it. I'm watching a replay of the RBC Canadian Open on the Golf Channel.

364 The IRBM did not die with the Jupiter and Thor- any of you kids remember the Pershing I and Pershing II? The II put a nuclear warhead with hard-target kill accuracy (guided and steerable) on the same continent as Moscow. That's why the KGB went batshit funding the Western European "nuclear freeze" groups that were all Communist fronts. The Intermediate Nuclear Forces treaty had been the first arms control break through with the Sovs in 15 years, precisely because they were afraid of the systems involved. It also got those nasty little SS-20s off the table, which was a plus.

365 Think we could get MI5 to deal with the NBC clowns? Maybe not; but, it's worth a try.

366 Good point, SGT Dan.

367 So happy my wife is as disgusted with these Olympics as I am. I'd hate to have to be avvoiding the TV all night. Instead, I get to watch baseball. Angel baseball. Life is good. Neato, even.
