Froma Harrop on the Tea Party
Bumped For Being Awesome

— rdbrewer

Little update to RD's post: Via @jamestaranto, she says "a lot of my reasoning ended up on the cutting room floor."

...

You remember her. She's a member of the The Providence Journal's editorial board, a syndicated columnist, and she has been named president of the National Conference of Editorial Writers (hereinafter: "NCEW"), a group at least in part dedicated to "restoring civility in America's public discourse." On August 2nd last year, she wrote an editorial that contained the following:

Make no mistake: The tea party Republicans have engaged in economic terrorism against the United States--threatening to blow up the economy if they don't get what they want. And like the al-Qaida bombers, what they want is delusional: the dream of restoring some fantasy caliphate. . . . Americans are not supposed to negotiate with terrorists, but that's what Obama has been doing. . . . That the Republican leadership couldn't control a small group of ignoramuses in its ranks has brought disgrace on their party. But oddly, Obama's passivity made it hard for responsible Republicans to control their destructive children. The GOP extremists would ask Obama for his firstborn, and he'd say, 'OK.' So they think, why not ask for his second-born, to which he responds, 'Let's talk.'

(Emphasis Ace's.) Ace posted a nice take down, and the thread was effective and funny. Among other things, Ace said, "I guess the NCEW's new mission of improving civility in discourse is going gangbusters under Froma Harrop's leadership, eh?"

But in a later piece, Ms. Harrop doubled down, stating her claims were perfectly civil. And, in fact, that they were factual. (Note: This, despite a later assertion of ironic intent.*)

Well, John Oliver from The Daily Show got in on the action in a masterful and funny interview of Ms. Harrop last night. It seems that Ms. Harrop might be a little short on self-awareness and, well, the concept of irony. The interview is hilarious. It appears below the fold.

I'm left with questions. 1) Did she not know this was John Oliver from The Daily Show, and was she not aware of the kinds of things that typically happen during Daily Show interviews? 2) Was this a case of intentional hypocrisy on her part for rhetorical gain? Or was she acting out of complete ignorance?

My thought is that it must be the latter. In fact, the very thinking processes that allow her to ramrod an organization devoted to the elevation of civil discourse while at the same time not recognizing her own use of some of the ugliest language imaginable to describe the Tea Party simply did not occur to her. She was unaware of the contradiction. (Yes, I'm trying to avoid making another point about my latest pet theory, "working memory overload.")

To make things worse, I believe those same thinking processes kept her from recognizing John Oliver's rhetorical goal, an ironic, humorous criticism of her conflicting points of view. She ended-up played a dense straight man all the way through. She never picked up on the gag.

In fact, she double-downed again, *accusing the Tea Partiers of having difficulty recognizing irony. Oliver clarified, to paraphrase, "You mean, even where there's almost a dictionary definition of it right in front of them, they don't get it?" Her response, "Absolutely."

Well, I can understand where she's coming from. The possibility her positions were absurdly mutually exclusive must never have occurred to her. After all, high-minded, super-intelligent people never make mistakes.

It is my considered opinion that leftists are incapable of being witty, or understanding actual wit when faced with it.  There are few things as embarrassing (or life fulfilling) as watching a lefty who thinks he/she is funny try to tell a joke.

36 Breaking news!

President Obama, speaking last night in Chicago at a fundraiser at a private home, unloaded this bombshell:

Obama, according to the White House transcript, talked about “The first bill I signed — a bill that said that we’re going to have equal pay for equal work because I want my daughters treated the same way as my sons.”

Sons? What sons? How many? Where? Names? Do the girls know? (More importantly, does Michelle?)

Don't forget, liberals think the Daily Show is legit news.  Sure it's funny, but snark is just part of their world view.  Remember the "Rally To Restore Sanity" which had all the coherence of an early-AM Working Group meeting at Occupy Wall St.

In Left World, it's pefectly reasonable to have Stephen Colbert testifying before Congressional committees.  Hell... these people sent Al Franken to the United States Senate.  So, no, she doesn't understand what's going on in that  interview.

Besides... civil discourse (in their terms) just means Republicans need to shut up and stop criticizing the Democrats and their policies.  Republicans are enemies of the state.  This haint is saying the same things that the Vice President and multiple DNC chairs have said.

63 President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Friday for greater power to shrink the federal government, and his first idea is merging six sprawling trade and commerce agencies whose overlapping programs can be baffling to businesses, a senior administration official told The Associated Press. Obama will call on Congress to give him a type of reorganizational power last held by a president when Ronald Reagan was in office. The Obama version would be a so-called consolidation authority allowing him to propose mergers that promise to save money and help consumers. The deal would entitle him to an up-or-down vote from Congress in 90 days. Sure why not. Give obama more unchecked power? What could possibly go wrong?

See, my only problem with this is that it's him asking for it.  If I believed for a minute that he would actually reduce the size of the Federal government, I'd probably be okay with that (provisionally).

But since we know everything he says- and everything his press department releases- are lies, we know this to be a lie.

Of course, it sounds hard to oppose, so the Congress will give him the power.  Again.  Ceding yet more of its authority to the Executive.

My response would be, "Well, that's a noble cause, Mr. President.  Why don't you tell us what agencies you want to combine, and we'll issue legislation that will do that?"

It never, never, never will.  We were discussing yesterday how for the ever so tolerant Left, those who disagree are subhuman scum thus justifying anything at all that may be said.

Having been through my fair share of "reorganizations" at the State government level, I can tell you this is a massive clusterfuck just waiting to happen.  Combining departments does nothing except muddy the waters about who reports to who about what, and makes the bureucratic mess even MORE of a headache.  If Obama was actually serious about shrinking the size of government, he'd be talking about cutting back regulations and lopping off whole Bureaus/Offices from the various non-military branches.  THEN you can talk about combining departments.  Otherwise all you're doing is shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Just let that sink in.

I'll see you that one and raise you this one, from the sidebar link to the Mercedes story.

Activists reacted with horror to the appropriation of Guevara, whom many political conservatives and Cuban-Americans consider a mass murderer who helped subjugate Cuba.

In our postmodern world where nothing matters and what if it did, the thing I miss the most is certainty, especially in the face of those tiny annoyances called "facts." The gauziness of reality promoted in the media tends to make everything just a matter of opinion these days. You, and you alone, are the ultimate arbiter of what's true, evidence (hundreds of dead bodies in this case) means nothing.

She believes that everything she believes is a "fact" rather than an "opinion".  Thus, every utterance she makes is "factual" rather than uncivil.

Yes, and part of the problem is that they are not fed enough protein as children, and they wind up with brain damage as a result.

It is not an accident that vegetarianism and liberalism go together. The rise of low protein diets coincides with the rise of the left in California.

Lisa Kudrow's brilliantly ditzy Phoebe Buffay character on Friends captured the effect of protein starvation on the human brain.

Part of the reason that leftists are so vicious is that protein starvation in the diet leads to blood creatine deficiency. Low creatine levels pass the message "kill something and eat it!" to the brain. That message gets confused in the damaged liberal brain - the result: Auschwitz, Gulags, re-education camps etc.

Take a look at the map of the world - find everywhere they don't eat meat - either out of religion or lack of general access and you will find the abysmal and long term historic failures centers of humanity. Then look at where they do eat meat - successful countries.

Oh, I agree.  I'm not talking about whether or not it should be done.  Here's the thing, though: he took those words right out of the Conservative Playbook.  It looks like he wants to downsize government (hey! he's not a big government liberal!  he wants to consolidate redundant agencies!  we want to do that too!), so Congress does have to be careful about how they say "no."

And the first step is to tell him no by telling him yes.  Thus: "Tell us what agencies you want to combine..."

Once he does that, you "consolidate" by eliminating one of the agencies.  And NOT transfering their authority to the other agency.

Then you either let him grit his teeth and sign the pink-slips of thousands of union-dues-paying government employees, or you prove that downsizing government was never really his intention.

Sorry, buddy, but you're just wrong here.   Harrup is completely in on the gag.   She is winking the whole time, knowing that the audience will understand that the rhetoric she used against the Tea Party last summer was completely over the top and uncivil, and consciously so, but also knowing that the hipsters/leftists/Democrats listening will understand the name of the game:   liberals get to be uncivil about conservatives, because their incivility is at the service of nobel ends; but the "civility project" is all about making it beyond the pale for conservatives to ever be uncivil about liberals and, in fact, to rhetorically label even the mildest and most logical and factual conservative criticisms of liberalism as "uncivil" and "radical."

The cynicism is even deeper.   She not only knew that the rhetoric she was using last summer was consciously and purposefully over the top and uncivil, but also knew that participating in a comedy take-down of her own rhetoric would have the secondary benefit of allowing her to repeat all of the same slurs against the Tea Party to a much larger audience.

Well, since I've had enough coffee to get on a roll...

What I see in this whole PoMo bullshit is nothing more than an appeal to the ego. And the ego has a great deal of difficulty in some people acknowledging (or even recognizing) anything beyond itself. The whole concept of "truth" as an entity, occurring in the real world and based on actual happenings, is lost on it.

It's merely solipsism, codified and repackaged for a new audience, and presented to you by people with academic credentials. You're meant to think that since someone is supposedly smarter than you are, they must be onto something, when that's not really the case.

It's just misguided egos recruiting new egos into their "intellectual" fold, known more commonly as "the blind leading the blind."

ARRRGH.  I hate hate hate "trendy" names.  I particularly hate it when parents give their children a normal name -- like "Noah" -- but with a different spelling -- like "Noa."   They have no idea how much trouble their child is going to go through in his/her life having to ALWAYS spell his/her name:  "That's Noa without an H."

In my job I see a lot of names of current high school students, and it is a plethora of stupid, asinine, and just plain cruel spelling.  "Michelle" is one that is perpetually changed: "Mishelle," "Mischelle," "Myshelle," "Michele."  And then there are the parents who decide to give their children the most cumbersome spellings I have ever seen.  I saw a "Steaphanee" the other day.  I assume that is supposed to be "Stephanie," but I have no idea.  All I know is if my parents had done something like that to me, I'd disown them as soon as I turned 18 and change my name to "Ann."

Either the parents are illiterate or think they're being clever.  Either way I pity the poor children.

146 LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Muhammad Ali's wife says the boxing great is still a "big kid" who enjoys his birthday parties. The three-time heavyweight boxing champion will celebrate a milestone birthday next Tuesday when he turns 70. Ali will be surrounded by friends who are gathering Saturday evening for a birthday party at the Muhammad Ali Center in his hometown of Louisville. Lonnie Ali, says it's the first of five parties for over the next couple of months. Lonnie Ali says the champ will be surrounded by friends and people who have been fixtures in his life, including his trainer Angelo Dundee. The affair is doubling as a $1,000 per person fundraiser for the center. Lonnie says her husband is glad he's still around, but wants to be reassured he doesn't look his age. 70? Shit I feel old

148 What I see in this whole PoMo bullshit is nothing more than an appeal to the ego. It's just misguided egos recruiting new egos into their "intellectual" fold, known more commonly as "the blind leading the blind." ***** You're on to me!

She believes she is entitled to more but I ask you: who chose the journalist job? Her ignorance and jealousy that comes out in her writing makes me laugh.
Wouldn't it be nice to be  liberal for a day where I get to "feel" good about what *I* do for others, and then lambaste all others who are more successful than myself without ever accepting responsibility for my choices in life? Yeah, that would be nice, wouldn't it?

Worse is that they believe we should be silenced or sent to gulag, and that they are justified in doing so because of the above. There is no doubt in my mind that people like this - and like Harry Reid and Pelosi and Obama - would gladly send us to re-education camps. 162 Following a shooting Tuesday night in the Juniata section of the city that left three teens dead (see related story), Mayor Michael Nutter had strong words for the shooter, calling him “a dog.” The outraged mayor also had strong words for the parents of Philadelphia’s youth, telling them “not to act like idiots and a–holes.” While Nutter says he is gratified about the quick arrest in the multiple shooting, he is fuming that the victims were out on Tuesday night apparently looking for trouble. And he blames their parents. “Seven young people, somewhere between 14 and 16 years old, on a Tuesday night, a school night, are out in a car going to somewhere to have a fight with some other teenager. That is completely insane, it is irresponsible. Parents have to know where their children are and what they are doing,” the mayor said. “Their little butts should have either been in bed, getting ready for bed, or doing some homework,” Nutter added. “Not out in a car, not in some other neighborhood, and not up to this kind of nonsense. I’m not your mom and I’m not your dad. We cannot completely legislate, or by policy, make people responsible for their children.” Sounds about right to me

Liberals believe in tolerance and civility for what they believe are acceptable points of view.

Conservatives are outside of polite thought - which ranges from center/left to somewhere around communism - so not only is it ok to disparage them, it is a actually a positive moral thing to do.

Essentially to liberals, conservatives aren't people but foes. This is why they can fret over the treatment of KSM, but call us "the real enemy".

209 Several euro zone countries including France face an “imminent” downgrade by ratings agency S&P, Reuters and Dow Jones news agencies reported on Friday afternoon, sending the euro to a session low against the dollar and European stocks down. The reports said Germany and the Netherlands were not among the countries facing a downgrade later on Friday, but gave no further details. According to Dow Jones sources, France was among the countries set to be downgraded. "Remain alert tonight when U.S. markets close," Reuters cited a source as saying. S&P warned in December that it could downgrade the credit ratings of several euro zone nations if European leaders failed to find a lasting solution to the debt crisis at a meeting of EU leaders that month. So basically, the New Triple A rating is gonna be the Double A?

212 Oh this can't be posted often enough: Michael Hastings' new book, The Operators, jabs at what could be a vulnerable spot for the Obama Administration, the president's relationship with the troops. The book describes a visit to Baghdad: After the talk, out of earshot from the soldiers and diplomats, he starts to complain. He starts to act very un-Obamalike, according to a U.S. embassy official who helped organize the trip in Baghdad. He’s asked to go out to take a few more pictures with soldiers and embassy staffers. He’s asked to sign copies of his book. “He didn’t want to take pictures with any more soldiers; he was complaining about it,” a State Department official tells me. “Look, I was excited to meet him. I wanted to like him. Let’s just say the scales fell from my eyes after I did. These are people over here who’ve been fighting the war, or working every day for the war effort, and he didn’t want to take fucking pictures with them?"

But at least all of those are names from parents who are literate (if stupid).  One of the most common girls names in Texas to a certain demographic of parent (I'm sure you'll be able to figure out which one) is "Female," (pronounced: fay-mall-ay, more or less).

Heck, it's bad enough when you have a real name spelled a real way and people screw it up.

I'm forever being called (in emails, no less- where my name is spelled correctly in the address list) "Alen," or "Allan," or "Alan."  I occassionally think of changing the spelling of my name to the more Gaelic "Allayne" since people are going to screw it up anyway.

But that's better than my son.  "Sean."  Easy name, right?  Famous and classical spelling?  And yet everyone assumes we spelled it "Shawn" or "Shaun."  Gah!

A local radio talk show has a list of these buzzwords and does the foghorn sound whenever they are used. It keeps callers from using them and highlights how often they are used by the left. Here is the shows definition:

Foghorn: The sound one hears immediately after uttering an incredibly moronic statement and/or a word not in the Garage Logic Lexicon. All FOGHORN-ABLE words are words whose original meanings have been distorted and embraced by mysterians in an attempt to mean something else.

So, instead of prosecuting the employers offering the remaining 110,000 internships, the Department of Labor is now praising these employers and counting these internships in their jobs numbers.

Wouldn't the preeminent example of "economic terrorism" be all the manipulation of our banking system by mostly Democrats? Isn't that in large part what set things in motion for the economic collapse?

Why, yes, yes it would be. As has been discussed here many times, the implosion of the housing market was set in motion by the Affordable Housing Act, enacted by the Carter administration and reinforced and reinvigorated by the Clinton admin. This POS law required banks to isssue mortgages to people who couldn't normally qualify for them under the old standards.

It took a while, but it eventually achieved it's desired goal of destroying the economy, conveniently just in time for the '08 elections. Banks were blamed, when all they were doing was following the law. Our very own SCOAMT-in-Chief was an enabler of this.

Yet another mystery to me is why the left seemed intent upon skewering the system to make homes more affordable, when all they needed to do is stay out of the way and let the free market work its magic.

277 Hmm... I guess it's the lesser of two evils choice.

You could just take the view that her brain is a nightmarish, twisted freeway... that has some key collector ramps missing (or re-directed to god-knows-where). OR, regard her a typical (nasty) hard-core lefty who uses 'words' the same way a clever assassin uses a cloak as a blind for the dagger they're holding.

Leftists (progressives, marxists, etc.) weaponize words... and they are masters of that skill-set... over a century+ of practice doing that sort of thing will give you that level of ability.

I'll admit to having scant patience for people like her... I just see her for what she is, a committed, self-righteous ideologue, and would deal with her accordingly.

Besides... Self-deception and denial of reality is part and parcel of being a 'citizen in good-standing' in Lefty-land... or being clinically insane.

Which is, to me, a distinction without a difference.

281 Actually, it's illegal (and mostly illiterate- at least in English) aliens who see the "Female" label on the paperwork for their baby after she's born, and assume the hospital staff already named them.

Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) says 'No' to RINO Romney at January 13, 2012 10:43 AM (8y9MW)

Yes, that was how "Female" got her name in the movie - her parents were Cajuns who didn't speak English.

However the premise is absurd in the real world.

Your wife gives birth in Austria and like Obama you don't speak Austrian. You see a form with the following on one of its lines:

Nubeiat frelish: rebarth

Do you name your child rebarth? Do you even know if the line on the form saying Nubeiat frelish is talking about a baby's name?

Show me a source for your absurd claim.

I do not see any benefit to participating in the joke to her. If she was in on it it was not until more than half way through the interview. Since she did make the decision to sit down, write the pieces in question, sign her name to them and then publish them she is clearly not especially bright. If she were bright she would have done that here with a nickname.

284 Anyone notice that Stewart's uncivil slamming of the TeaParty came on August 1, 2011, while Froma's appeared in the Journal on August 2 (which means it was written earlier?

Synchronicity?  Or just GMTA...

Could it be that they are trying to put one over on us?

In any case, if there really was collusion between them for a (wink wink) "interview", the general audience on YouTube won't "get" their hip attempt to be ironic, by pretending to be clueless about irony (which is one of Stewart's shticks).

285 Call me an optimist. Harrop was in on the joke from the beginning, and that is not just a good thing, it is a VERY good thing.

It is very messy to admit you were wrong about something big. Especially if you doubled down when you wrong. Think about you repaired bridges when you had to do that.

Maybe you came flat out and apologized. But more like you did it in a messy, gradual way. Like not talking about it, then maybe a while later making a half-funny reference to it in a way that kind of admits you were wrong, but not seriously. Maybe you never really apologized until years after the issue blew over, over a beer or late night jam session. But it took a while, and it was baby steps all the way.

This may be Harrop's way of making things right.

That's important.

Because a lot of smart, basically good people  are now realizing that they screwed up majorly with the SCOAMF. And they will back out in different ways, some more gracefully than others.

It is in our best interest to let them. Not "help" them, or coddle them, but not get in the way either. Treat them in the way we we would want to be treated if we were trying to get on the right side of a bad mistake.

And we know how we would want to be treated in that situation. Because each one of us HAS been in that situation.

Unless Ms. Harrop is the single greatest living actress in the world today, I challenge anyone to view the interview and then not conclude that she was completely oblivious to what the Daily Show producers were doing to her.

I think the gag worked so well because Ms. Harrop incorrectly assumed that she and Oliver were ideologically simpatico and were working toward the same objective. She was clearly wrong on this assumption. The real objective was to make her and people of her ilk look like clowns.

Right, that's why the audience was laughing at her, and laughing every time Oliver expressed his bafflement that she didn't get it. They were tricked too. I'm glad our resident Genius Squad caught the real meaning, though. Otherwise everyone, from Stewart's audience to the wider world audience, would have just thought Oliver was skewering someone for ridiculous double-standards and lack of self-awareness. In case you're wondering how this ever could have happened without her in on the joke: Pretty simple. He asks her the stuff at the end, first, after pretending to be on her side. Only later does he begin with the mockery by citing her own words to her, which he then puts in the beginning of the clip. In addition, you're acting as if she would have said something different if she was in/wasn't in on the joke. In fact she has already been confronted with her ludicrous hypocrisy - and simply said it was factual and logical and thus not hypocrisy. She's been saying that for going on nine months; why would it suddenly dawn on her that her position was inconsistent?

I imagine most of these targets are deceived and told something like, "We're going to ask about that column, you know, have a little fun with it, but we'll give you a chance to explain yourself." And she was arrogant and thought she'd make some Good Points about her column being Factual and Logical. She also thought she'd be the beneficiary of kind editing. She wasn't. If they sold her on the idea it was just going to be "a little fun, no one gets hurt," they lied to her, because they made her look foolish.

436  To be fair, she did post on her website about the upcoming interview before it aired, saying "the joke will be on [her]."  This leaves open two possibilities:

a)  Froma Harrop knew it was a joke on her at the time, and decided to play along.
b)  Froma Harrop realized the joke either during or after the interview, and is spinning like mad.

Given that no sane person would be involved with a) unless they had either a hugely tolerant and very odd sense of humor, or else some desire to go on the Daily Show (possibly just because they're a fan, possibly to try and punk the punkers -- who knows?), this leaves me with a list of four options:

1)  Option a) is true, and Froma Harrop has a hugely tolerant and very odd sense of humor.
2)  Option a) is true, and Froma Harrop had a desire to go on the Daily Show.
3)  Option a) is true, and Froma Harrop isn't a sane person.
4)  Option b) is true, and no further explanation is needed.

You know, I think I'm going with 4).

446 To be honest, it's not even that FUNNY. It's just REMARKABLE that she just doesn't get it, when the guy is fucking sitting there virtually drawing Pictionary diagrams for her. But if you don't believe she'd keep up with this absurd defense -- again, check the record. *This is exactly what she's been saying since August.* She says she meant it, taht it was not incivil as it was "logical" and factual, and that she meant it, not even as a metaphor -- but then, EXACTLY like you saw here, after saying she actually literally meant it she then goes on to say "people don't get irony." If people don't get irony, so what? You claimed you meant it literally. Now that makes no sense, but she's said that EXACT SAME THING BEFORE, both incompatible things. Here's what maybe you're not including in your calculations: SHE IS A FUCKING IDIOT WITH NO SELF-AWARENESS OR CRITICAL ABILITY WHATSOEVER.

451 I think Harrop knows a joke was played on her, but she's grining through it, and also doesn't realize how bad this makes her look-- because, I repeat, she's been saying the same thing since August. You see, she believes this, she really does believe she has a special licence to name-call. So what you're not getting, I think, is the world from HER point of view: She's not entirely aware of how ridiculous her words make her look because she believes those ridiculous words are true. So how can something true make you look ridiculous? It will dawn on her when she "steps down" from the Civility thing, which she will in fact do, because the well-kept secret of her asininity is no longer a secret. She is now a laughingstock.

454 You know, the point she was trying to make in the beginning was a reasonable one.  There is a difference between calling a muderer a "murderer" and just calling someone you don't like a murderer.  She was trying to claim that this was her justification for the "superficial" incivility (in her mind, she would argue) versus the true incivility of those who use the term merely as a slight.  That argument would fly if it were true but we all know that it's unmitigated bullshit.  In the case of lefties, they tend to call others names as a purely defensive move (as they know they are describing themselves, so they are trying to diffuse the impact by pulling as many others into their hell as they are able).

474 I would use a keyhole saw and cut the remains of the peg inside the headstock down and see if I could use a little c-clamp and a socket to push the rest of it back out. You can pick up a new peg at a music store...we sell them for .50 cents apiece I think.

Be careful if you have to drill it out because it is just a friction peg and if you wallow out the hole too much a new peg will have slippage problems.

Do you have fine tuners on the bridge? If not get some. They make tuning much easier.

No, because violin peg holes are tapered, and the tools for tapering them cost a small fortune (14.5 degree taper, I think). You might try drilling out the center with a much smaller diameter bit, like 1/16," on both ends to relieve pressure if you can do so without touching the sides, and then using a punch of some kind (a flat-headed nail would work - you want something that won't penetrate the wood) to drive the peg out, making sure that you are whacking on the small end of course. pad any surface that it is going to be resting on.

I would try driving it out first before trying to drill out anything.

Posted by: Hrothgar at January 13, 2012 07:31 PM (i3+c5)

That might work, but I suspect that the gentle increas of pressure will not work as well a small but sharp rap with a hammer. Getting the c-clamp to line up in such a way that it exerts its force in line with the direction you want the peg to move without blocking the other end might be a problem, particularly so if the end is rounded.

I was forgetting that the small end probably projects from the side. If so, you don't need a punch, just tap the end or use the C-clamp.

Drilling should be a last resort, and if you touch the violin head you will ruin it.

For example, this is from Wikipedia, swiped from a hot air comment: “Harrop is the President of the National Conference of Editorial Writers. One project of the NCEW is the Civility Project, aimed at restoring civility to America’s public discourse. Her position was criticized by the Wall Street Journal, which noted the contrast between this role and her comparison of the Tea Party to terrorist groups such as al-Qaida. In her response to the criticism, Harrop stated, “I see incivility as not letting other people speak their piece.” She subsequently deleted all the comments from the post and shut down the commenting feature of her blog.” ... See, she is crazy. She has no self awareness. She has no problem declaring a rule of general applicability, immediately violating it herself, and then claiming she didn't violate it at all, and you're a big meanie for being incivil in not letting her speak her (retarded) piece.

This idea that *politics* is supposed to determine every goddamned taste and pleasure in your life is crazy. I like the Office on NBC. I only mention that in comments, never in a post, because NBC is a lefty organization and I don't want to goose their traffic. That said, I'm not going to stop watching a show that makes me laugh for the sake of Perfect Ideological Conformity. Beyond the politics, we are people. I hope everyone keeps that in mind. There is more to life than arguing endlessly about government. It's important, but it's not everything.

508 That's what is ultimately driving me out of my fucking mind. That "Conservative" means "You must think x y and z and enjoy only Approved Entertainment a b and c." This is NUTS. STOP IT. Politics is not the same thing as humanity. If all you are as a person is a political theorist then you really need to diversify your interests.

509 Ace:

I thought it was funny but might have been an inside joke. If so, it would've made the smug even smugger, but it might also have been a fail as the unwashed masses viewed at face value.

Either way, I didn't think it was any sort of conservative "breakthrough" that warranted a bump. Opinions ... assholes, as the saying goes.

But I never advocated a boycott, so I hope you're not accusing me of nagging you for that.

Right now I'm more interested in ErikW's violin problem.

O wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!
It wad frae mony a blunder free us,
An' foolish notion:
What airs in dress an' gait wad lea'e us,
An' ev'n devotion!

511 >>>I thought it was funny but might have been an inside joke. If so, it would've made the smug even smugger, but it might also have been a fail as the unwashed masses viewed at face value. Even if she was in on it, somehow... how does that become a joke about conservatives? She's sitting there indulging in childish, humpty-dumpty hypocrisy; how is that a joke at anyone's expense but her own? >>>Ether way, I didn't think it was any sort of conservative "breakthrough" that warranted a bump. Opinions ... assholes, as the saying goes. Well let me explain that. First of all, I think this is a really good piece, as I've wanted this woman exposed since August. Second of all, I just saw it fifteen minutes before I bumped it, via Taranto. I was writing my OWN post when I happened to try googling my own previous posts about her and I came across RD's-- he'd done it today, obviously. By the way, further evidence that this skewers the left is that when I search "Froma Harrop," this blog is one of the top returns, which rarely happens. No one on the left is linking it.

512 I'm telling you...liberalism is a mental disorder.  I am always drawn to listen to Debbie Wasserman Schultz like one would be drawn to a car wreck.  One of my friends has started to believe in Chem Trails and is convinced this evil world secret empire is conspiring to rule the earth.  There are two kinds of mental disorders with this.  One kind I call the Allan Colmes disordered Liberal: mean, nasty, evil and if you ever meet face to face you will punch in the head.  The second is the Maxine Waters Liberal who are basically harmless,(except they vote), but the critical thinking part of their brain is dead and they have become basically stupid.  These kind of liberals seem to be ignorant of the fact that they are the most irrelavant humans ever and they are wasting valuable resources like food and oxygen.

513 Froma Harrop is a name?  It sounds more like something your doctor would prescribe an ointment to clear up for you.

"Dude, this is the worst case of Froma Harrop I've ever seen!  Get some 2% cortizone cream on that and lay off the rich foods for a while."

514 Wait, let me check on that...nope, she can't even lay claim to being a wise Latina.

Obama/Biden sticker on her car--check.

515 OK, head over to this page. It's NCEW's page for The Civility Project. See the, uh, bullseye in the banner ad, top left corner? That's, uh, unfortunate.

It's an incredibly delicate instrument. That's why tapping it or putting much pressure on it makes me nervous.

It's not a Stradivarius or anything but it's nice to me.

Take it down to  "The Loft" in Clintonville.  They specialize in violin repairs.

Really.  Check it out in the Yellow Pages.

@38:  "...I want my daughters treated the same way as my sons."

Don't sweat it, Al.  There are no sons, he's still gay as he ever was. and there will be no Barack Obama III.

That should read, "...life threatening hair condition..."

521 Self reference is tricky for a lot of folks. Fromma needs to try to understand Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem. That would bend her mind into a Möbius strip.
