I usually wait for things to come out on video, but I'll be seeing this one at the theater.

It's a weapons system that requires you to be lightly armed, in an enclosed space, without backup support, and the like.
These things would be useless in the open against even current military.
I've never got the whole 'fearsome weapon' thing about these aliens.

The one word that comes to mind about his films is "tight". The phrase "loose sh*t" does not come to mind when thinking of Alien or Aliens.

The trick is 'don't let it.' Don't go down it's hole, don't separate, don't disarm, don't go into the dark, don't let it get near you.
You know, basically the same rules teenagers never follow in horror movies.

Think of it as a genocidal type weapon released on densely populated, urbanized civilization. It breeds fast, grows fast, kills relentlessly, adapts to whatever the host creature is like. And in the end it could clear a whole planet of the "enemy" civilization. But whoever created it must have some kind of "off" switch to get it under control again to claim the planet that it clears off.

That's what I always assumed it was, it wasn't a battlefield weapon, it's a planetary takeover weapon.

Speaking of a meddlesome sternum, I almost joined the Zipper Club this weekend. Had been on IV anti-biotics for 8 days for an infection in my leg that wouldn't heal, which required a PICC line to be installed in my left arm. Friday afternoon it was to be extracted, and the last 5 inches of the PICC line got stuck in my vein. So the nurse gives too hard a tug on the thing, and it breaks, and now 5 inches of thin tubing is loose in my vein.
Nurse instantly grabs my arm above the IV entry point, hoping to prevent the loose tubing from going toward my heart. After two hours of this, the vascular surgeon comes along and feels my arm and says "it's stuck in there. We'll operate and remove it after I tie off the vein above where it is stuck."
So, prepped for OR, knocked out, and wake up with my wife and the surgeon saying: "It wasn't in your arm. It's moved into your vascular system. It may be in your heart, or elsewhere. We are prepping you immediately to have the Interventional Radiologist attempt to use a catheter to find and extract the lost tubing, but if that fails, and it is still in your heart, we will have to perform open heart surgery on you."
I'm 48 and kind of a pussy when it comes to pain and blood, but for some reason I wasn't really frightened, as I had my Rosary and was confident that these folks knew what they were doing. Since they'd just awakened me from general anesthesia, they couldn't drop me back into it, so they sedated me a little and wheeled me back into the OR, where they ex-rayed me and found that the 5 inch piece of tubing had migrated all the way through my heart into the lower part of my right lung. Relief! No open heart surgery this night.
They kept me awake for the next two hours as the Radiologist put a catheter into my right femoral vein, which he guided North into and then through my heart (which is a very strange feeling; my heart beat, but very oddly, and I could tell there was something inside it), and down into, finally, the correct branch of my right lung, where he was able to use a little clamp at the end of the catheter to grab the errant piece of tubing and draw it slowly back out of the lung, back out through the heart, and out my leg. They had an x-ray machine above me that was continually taking pictures so they could see where this thing was, and watch the progress of the rescue catheter.
Finally got to critical care room and settled in at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, and stayed awake until the shift supervisor broke into the galley and got me a sammich and a juice box, as I was starving. Came home Saturday afternoon, and just resting today and wondering at modern medicine. I'll be back at work tomorrow as a boring real estate lawyer, thanking God that something worse didn't occur, and that I didn't reprise the Alien chestburster scene in reverse.

We have very good coverage through Group Health, so I doubt there will be any extra bills. Plus, the whole lawyer thing will come in handy if I do get any bills, since the bit with the PICC line breaking was something that should probably never have happened. But, I am personally not a litigious person (though vicious and relentless on my clients' behalf), and am a very forgiving person as well, and I know the nurse who broke the PICC line didn't intend to do so, and that sometimes these things happen. Had I ended up with my chest cracked, perhaps I would feel differently, but I have way too much work to do with my expanding business in the next few years as well as this upcoming family vacation to be worried about making a claim against the hospital. Medical malpractice litigation is shockingly expensive, and fraught with peril, and I have done enough complex litigation in my career to know that I'd prefer to move on and count it as an interesting medical experience that ended well, and a good story to tell my kids ("I had a tube running from my leg, through my heart, and into my lung, and I was awake the whole time!!!!"). The surgeries were performed at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue, WA, and everyone there, as well as at the Group Health facility where the PICC line was installed and partially extracted, seem like good people who do a lot of good, so I'll let the matter rest.

After Mrs. azlib and I married off our first daughter, we went there to take a break from the whole hoo-haw, and we came this close...---><---...to not coming back. We were very much tempted to call the kids and have them sell everything and just ship us the dogs. I envisioned buying some Hawaiian shaved ice shop or T-shirt place and spending the rest of our lives selling crap to tourists while living in a little place with a tin roof and never wearing anything but shorts and loud shirts. Reality overcame us, but the dream still survives.
The place is such a paradise that I can almost forgive them for bringing us that SCOAMF. Almost.
