"As I have said for years, we need a lifetime cap on Welfare. Pick a total length - 1 year, 5 years, 10 years. Start the clock in Jan of the coming year. At the end of the time - no more period."
I think an "accept welfare in exchange for your vote" program would be an instant winner. Most of America's problems would evaporate.

This is just disgusting. There is enough entrepreneurial spirit in this country that this SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. I'm sure a lot of the people getting these welfare checks are leeches, but I guarandamntee you there are a HELLUVA lot who would prefer to have a job again so they could provide for their own families instead of leaning on the government. THOSE are the people who have my sympathies and prayers.

What happened to shame?
America's unique achievements are possible partly because of our institutional, legal, social, economic, and spiritual heritage. Our forbears struck delicate and sensible balances between freedom and order and between pioneering enterprise and social conservatism. We upset these balances at our risk. An unreasonable bias for "change" can lead to impulsive and destructive changes which can upset the social balances.
Harmful changes instigated by well-meaning reformers can rend the social fabric and destroy the fortuitous matrix of cultural, social, and spiritual elements which have made possible our freedom, order, and prosperity. Hasty "reform" can kill the goose which lays the golden eggs. The liberal myth of "root causes," helps to keep the bandwagon for "change" rolling.
Asshats. All of them.

Go to BLS.gov and look at the yearly chart for those who have jobs in the US...
We've added about 8 million more people through Population growth, and legal immigration....
While having about 6 million LESS total people working... than in 2008...
THIS is why we have a Welfare Problem.

However, for all his efforts, ranging from the stimulus package to green-energy development, to bring us out of recession, he has never found the key. He has generally made poor choices of the people needed to get the job done, such as Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. And the number of jobs created during his term simply has not kept up with demand.

By electing the feckless, larcenous and cowardly to office.
By allowing them to excuse themselves from their duty to the country in the name of money being available for your locale.
The dependent state isn't just those on welfare. It's companies who sign up for incentive programs. It's farmers who sign up for subsidies.
It's people accepting government money because "everyone else is doing it, might as well get some for myself".
It's the acceptance in the House of set asides from a bill for use in another congressman's district in return for his vote.
Ditto the Senate.
It's union members allowing their union to buy and sell votes.
It was all good until the underpinings were knocked out and now all that "money" has gone bye bye and the chickens are flocking in the distance. (no we haven't seen the worst yet).
Don't point any fingers at anyone but yourself when you look for who to blame for this mess.
Yes, there are particular groups who are more visible and some who were at the forefront but we've all watched it happen and done nothing.

I'm off all big gubmint. Including big breaks for companies outsourcing to India, big oil breaks, big breaks to GE. That's bipartisan wefare, and it's more far reaching than making sure some infant gets food.

You're repeating some Liberal Talking Points...with those first two things.
Companies don't get "big breaks" for outsourcing jobs.
They just save on the ass-raping that the Dem-sponsored regs and taxes do to them.
Oh...and also the ass-raping from the Unions.
And what..."big oil breaks"....are you talking about?
There are some tax breaks for the small oil-industry companies, that allow them to expense capital expenditures...which is actually a good thing for the economy as a whole.
GE, you're right about.
They are sucking off the govt teat bigtime.

When is the last time a welfare recepient created a job for you or provided a service to you, the person who is paying taxes for these entitlements? Welfare recipients, Corporations. One is not like the other.
Just a thought since we are talking about welfare. I wonder if J.K. Rowling ever paid back the British government for the time she was on the well publicized Welfare period.

Yeah, I know that. Congress and a deep desire to get re-elected (and if you listen to Dick Morris, he thinks he was the one who talked Clinton into doing it). Still, it was his one good achievement, and TFG has rendered Clinton legacy-less (as well as his repeal of "DADT", etc.)

Provided she pays taxes to the British government (which maybe she has a creative accountant), she's paying it back and then some.

I hear all this bullshit about how the rich need to pay their fair share. Yeah? Well, when do I get my fucking fair share from the government? When does that happen?
Then there's this asshole on the TV telling me that he's cut taxes for the middle class and he's passed all these tax credits for small businesses. Oh really? I and my wife are middle class and we are both "small businesses."
And here I am, like a fucking idiot, paid more in taxes this year than last.
I guess we don't count.
And don't give me that bullshit about the promise of Social Security and Medicare. I know good damned and well that won't be there for me. Just this side of forty and just too damned young.
Again, I guess we don't count.
Well, I can count, I can count all the things I've gone without in the last 30-odd years, and now, all the things I'm not going to have in the next 30-odd years--all because I was a damned chump. I played by the rules, I worked hard, I sacrificed, I paid my bills first and cut back on the nice things when money is tight.
Where's my fucking handout?
Where's my fucking free phone?
Where's my fucking free house?
Where's all the shit I've been paying for all these years?
When do I get something back from the Federal government for all the money I've given them over the years?

See, the thing is, I'd never do that. There really ARE people who legitimately need assistance to make ends meet and feed their families. For them, using an EBT card WOULD be shameful, and they're the ones who want to get away from being on welfare as fast as possible. My family has been there; I wouldn't shame someone like that.
What's missing from our culture is PERSONAL shame. personal shame is reinforced by societal shaming, but it has to be something felt internally. That's what we need to get back. If you don't believe, inside yourself, that what you're doing is wrong, then no number of people berating you for it is going to get you to stop. You'll just feel bitter or derisive.
People treat shame like it's solely a negative, but that's not true. In the immediate it's negative, and it's very uncomfortable. But in the long-term, experiencing shame teaches a person greater respect for themselves and for those around them. This is called "character growth." Since regressives have no character, they don't understand it.

You can buy a large, fully topped pizza at Walmart for $7. It might be difficult to recreate for that price.
I'm not making excuses, but having spent a number of my teenage years living with a single mom who alternated between employment and welfare, foodstamps do not provide for a king's feast.
I've passed a whole lot of judgement in my day on those who didn't work 14 hour days, as I did, to make sure my daughter never saw a foodstamp up close. I spent a lot of time criticizing those who needed help because of the few do-nothings I had met, but the truth is that not everyone on welfare is a lazy-good-for-nothing queen/king.
And...certainly not in this jobs market.
Today, I am sick and can no longer work an 8 hour day, much less 14 hour, 6 and 7 day weeks. I am drawing LTD as of this month and they require me to apply for SSI within 6 months. I have insurance, but I am still required to apply.
Be very careful about whom you judge because you can find yourself quite unexpectedly having to depend upon another.
It is a terrible and humbling experience.

Like I said, further upthread, I HAVE done the math, and can make a pizza for right around one dollar. I have taught both of my children how to make a pizza for right around one dollar, even bought both of them a pizza peel.
What bugs the shit out of me is people who claim that 'Big Oil' is raping the consumer by adding about 50 cents per gallon to the cost of a gallon of gas -- an amount the goverment is pretty much matching with taxation, while Dominos can take a dollars worth of ingredients and sell it for 9.99 and there is no outrage or calls for 'excess profits' tax or elimination of 'subsidies'.
But math is hard, and most people choose the easy road.

Double dittos.
I would have to presume that the one's who are the most vehement, scathing and vulgar about those on food stamps or welfare have been fortunate so far in life to come to a situation where that's the only choice they have.
That choice has had to be made by people who would've have laughed at you if you told them where they'd be now 5-6 years ago.
Yes being poor should be uncomfortable. It is. For those who revel in it, let them have their paltry victory for those who're a still stunned at what has happened to them, have pity for tomorrow you may join them.
The poor will always be with us. Just as there are the very rich, there are the very poor. Just as there are the lucky, there are the unlucky. Just as there are the very smart, there are the very dumb.
It's all a bell curve and most fall in the middle.
Anyone thinks that welfare is fun can go apply anytime. Or you can find out what the income limits are and try living on that for a while.
It's not fun. It's not easy and you're always a moment away from some disaster that you won't be able to pay for that will take away what little you have.
Anyone who curses the poor, deserving or not, is a piss poor human being.
Any fault concerning these programs inefficiency lies on the backs of those who wrote the laws, those who wrote the regulations and those who enforce and carry out those regulations.
curse them if you will but not the people in need.

Would you offer someone a wine you made today? A beer brewed just this morning? People would say, "No thanks". Because they 'kinda get' the idea that the yeast in those items requires some time to do their thing and produce flavor.
So it is with the yeast in bread or pizza dough. I don't have the time to do true experimentation but my best pizza dough has usually sat in the frig for two or three days before making a pie. Right before the bag of dough begins to deflate is when the yeast are at their tastiest.
The difference between store bought frozen and homemade? Night and day. You pull that sucker from the oven and it looks alive, almost angry.
