— Ace Commenters keep mentioning this, so okay, here's a thread.
A warning to anyone who hasn't watched the show yet: The reason people are mentioning this is because of a Major Spoiler Event.
So keep away, Spoiler-Avoiders.
I'll put up another post just above this one so that this isn't the only new thread.
George R. R. Martin wrote the script for this episode, and discusses why things happened as they did.
We all know how we wanted it to happen -- either by Arya's sword Needle, or perhaps even Sansa finally snapping and stabbing him to death with a dagger.
Instead, Martin deliberately avoided any satisfying death, because, of course, he hates his audience.
Well, because he hates his audience, and tries to avoid easy, you-knew-this-was-coming-and-wanted-it-to-come fan service.
Instead it's just another political murder, perpetrated by Who-knows-who, for who-knows-what-reason. It's smart to remind the audience that while they, as readers, have an agenda -- they'd like to see Vengeance -- other characters in the world don't give a crap about what happened to the Starks, but murder for their own convenience and ambitions.
He explains the historical inspiration for this latest murder:
I don’t know how it comes across in the show, because I haven’t actually seen it yet, but the poison that is used... is one that I introduce earlier in the books and its symptoms are similar to choking....I think the intent of the murderer is not to have this become another Red Wedding—the Red Wedding was very clearly murder and butchery. I think the idea with [Redacted's] death was to make it look like an accident — someone’s out celebrating, they haven’t invented the Heimlich maneuver, so when someone gets food caught in his throat, it’s very serious.
I based it a little on the death of Eustace, the son of King Stephen of England. Stephen had usurped the crown from his cousin, the empress Maude, and they fought a long civil war and the anarchy and the war would be passed down to second generation, because Maude had a son and Henry and Stephen had a son. But Eustace choked to death at a feast. People are still debating a thousand of years later: Did he choke to death or was he poisoned? Because by removing Eustace, it brought about a peace that ended the English civil war. EustaceÂ’s death was accepted [as accidental], and I think thatÂ’s what the murderers here were hoping for...

He wrote the script???
So then why make it so ambiguous? In the book, the culprit is obvious. We know, because it gets said as it's happening!
Why have the stupid "follow the bouncing cup" game?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that, if you're attempting to make a death by poisoning look like accidental choking, you don't go ahead and use the SUPER-SEIZURE BLOOD-SPRAYING-OUT-THE-NOSE poison.
Anyway, there are only two downsides to Joffrey's death:
1. He didn't die for an hour.
2. He can't die again.

Yeah, but that's too clever by half. It may be a dramatic trope for a guy to get what's coming to him, but that's why drama is so dramatic. If you want to write about political assassinations coming at the hands of those who don't give two shits about anyone's agenda other than theirs, then write a documentary.

I seem to recall the culprit was watching for it, waiting for it to happen, then plans the rest of his plot. They already changed one aspect of that (I think, unless they change it back), but I am reasonably certain, even if it's left a little bit unclear in this particular book, by the most recent book it's stated quite clearly.

WTF is *wrong* with some Fan Service from time to time? We've seen over and over again movie and TV writers/producers/actors and modern novelists all consciously choose to ignore providing some "fan service" and produce utterly misanthropic shit that is not only not as satisfying as what could be really well done, in a more traditional manner, but can also actively cause your audience to want to roast you slowly over a large bonfire (How I Met Your Mother creators, I'm looking at you.)...

2) I always doubted the Tyrrells did it. What do they gain? They're best play was to use Joffrey to push out/murder Cersei and Tywin and then off Joffrey. And for the Seven's sake, why would the old lady need Sansa to smuggle in the poison??? Much easier to do it herself.
3) When I read the books I half thought that after all it was Tyrion, but after watching last night...
4) It was Sansa. Watch it again closely and you will see here slip something into Joffrey's cup when she picks it up and hands it to Tyrion. It fits with her story arc from helpless little girl to eventual Iron-Fisted Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.
Am I the only person on the planet who caught that? GRRM and the producers must be laughing their asses off today.

I am totally invested in Tyrion. I was wondering where they found a dwarf with the correct accent and bearing for his class, and who can act. Turns out he's from New Jersey. I love every scene he's in.
I like Brandon and the guy from the "Family" episodes of Doctor Who who is helping him to learn his spirit guide powers. And of course, Arya. She should do something bad so that she's not so unambiguously good and plucky, but I don't actually want to see her sully herself.
I hated Daenaris (sp?) in the beginning, but she has grown on me.

This last episode made it clear (and I don't think this was ever clear in the books) that it's a Gnostic religion that holds that real world is Hell and that "heaven" consists of escaping it, through death.
Posted by: ace at April 14, 2014 03:18 PM (/FnUH)
I read somewhere that GRRM purposely tries to upend traditional symbolism in the book as to good/evil. For example the Night's Watch, a band of good ppl for the most part, wear black, whereas the King's guard are all in white, and do despicable things. So I could definitely see him use good euphemisms in an evil, warped religion. Besides, most evil cults try to have good elements to lure their followers in.

"yeah I don't get that. His turn towards honor is a bit abrupt.
But... I guess the only REALLY bad thing he did was attempt to kill Brandon Stark. Maybe, who knows, it was an impulse, panic-move.
Maybe he never really was all that "bad."
I think that Jamie was not always bad.
He was put in an impossible situation: obey his vows to protect the King or stop the mad King from killing everybody in the city. He chose to kill the King and forever lost his honor – becoming the Kingslayer. He also seems to have kept the justification secret despite the harm he could've avoided to his reputation. Thereafter, it seems like he l most of his desire to try to be good (his god-awful manipulative and beautiful sister was no help).
But, he did not entirely lose the desire to be good. One of his most interesting scenes was the first time he saw Ned in the throne room when Ned came to Kings Landing to be the hand. He clearly thought highly of Ned and hoped that Ned would see honor in Jamie (or at least forgive Jamie) for killing the mad King (who had burned Ned's father and brother to death in that same room). Ned did not and you can really see how it wounds Jamie.

1) Show me picture of Oleana touching Joffrey's cup.
2) Hard to tell from the second picture if the gem is there or not. Could be behind her hair braid.
3) Plausible deniability? Again, explain why she needs Sansa to smuggle the poison (which looks like a gem anyway) and how she planned to get it in Joffrey's cup? Makes more sense that Sansa originally planned to kill Tyrion and then changed her mind out of pity for his humiliation and having the opportunity to get the one she really hated, Joffrey.
Posted by: Pluskat's Dog at April 14, 2014 12:31 PM (cyV/5)
Spoilers! Lady Olenna Redwyne (nee Emma Peel) killed Joffrey! The books say it was the hairnet but it looks like it was the necklace that was given to Sansa by the fool. Running for best grandma ever, she killed Joffrey to spare Margaery from Joffrey's cruelty, and to avoid Loras from becoming a kingslayer when it comes down to it.
Catelyn Stark is dead, but not dead dead. She was resurrected a few days after her severe sore throat. She comes back as Lady Stoneheart, with vengeance in her heart. She's like a resurrected cadaver pretty much, she can't speak and her wounds are still there.
Tyrion Lannister will straight up murder Tywin Lannister after finding Shae in his bed and learning that the girl he was in love with many years ago was not a whore but a common girl who was truly in love with Tyrion.
Cersei Lannister becomes straight up cray cray (and a fat drunkardess), putting a bounty on Tyrion and causing the death of a lot of children and midgets because of mistaken identities. She also gets screwed by Jamie next to Joffrey's corpse. With Tywin dead, and she becomes Queen Regent to her son Tommen, her powers are unchecked and she drives herself mad with power.
Prince Oberyn will become Tyrion's champion following Joffrey's death. He will get his revenge on Gregor Clegane for the murder of Oberyn's sister, but he's not going to make it either. He will end up losing Tyrion's case because Gregor Clegane ends up killing him.

I never for a moment thought that Tyrian was behind the poisoning.
My first thought was "The curse worked!"
Remember the curse that the witch woman did against Joffrey?
I forget her name...she was the one who had a smoke demon come out of her womb.

Yes. Several times actually and also in the morning dump thread. And 'yes' to 'asshole' too because even ignoring someone like me who isn't going to see the season until a year from now when it's brought out on DVD, anyone who recorded the show to watch tonight (like artisanal 'ette #1) or later in the week or to save up two or three episodes to watch at once got ass-fucked.

Emotions are a luxury for the dead.
The living should avoid emotions, because they kill.

If GoT illuminates our age with hundreds of deaths shortly after wars with thousands of deaths, which affected few, then do we now think that death is more important? or less?

It really looks like she planned to kill Tyrion and then changed here mind out of pity for Tyrion and her overriding hatred of Joffrey.

You must not have watched very carefully:
Right after Lady Olenna fondles Sansa's hair and necklace: http://tinypic.com/r/32zjmz9/8
Sansa handing the cup to Tyrion. The tip of the gold piece is on top of her braid, so the jewel that was supposed to be there should not be obscured by her hair:

This show glorifies disgusting behavior and teaches people all the wrong values and yet many even on the "conservative" aisle lap it up.
No wonder the culture is toast. With cr@p like this how can it be anything else?

1) When you said the gem on the right, I thought you meant the gem on Sansa's right, not the frame right. That said, Olenna plainly touches the necklace on Sansa's right side, not the left. The picture cited with the missing gem is much later after Olenna is gone. Again, Olenna did not need Sansa to sneak in the poison, looks genuinely surprised for a moment when Joffrey starts choking, and finally NEVER GOES NEAR THE CUP. Unless she has GoGo-Gadget arms she never had the opportunity to poison Joffrey.
2) Watch Sansa very closely through this sequence:
- Early on she is obviously seething with Tyrion, not necessarily with Joffrey.
- After Joffrey humiliates Tyrion she looks on Tyrion with pity and Joffrey with anger.
- When the cup rolls under the table, Sansa is doing something with her hands under the table.
- She picks up the cup with her right hand around the bowl, but when she stands up to hand the cup to Tyrion she is holding the bowl of the cup with her left hand and her right hand is over the opening of the cup.
- During the sequence leading up to Joffrey's death, the camera keeps cutting to Sansa. Why? If Olenna killed Joffrey, why is it so important to keep showing Sansa.
- When the pie comes and Joffrey sets the cup in the table behind him without drinking, the camera cuts to Sansa and she looks concerned for a moment. When Joffrey starts choking she doesn't look surprised, there is even a momentary smirk of satisfaction.
That Sansa killed Joffrey fits her story arc. She starts out a kind, meek girl who is always waiting for her father-mother-brother, etc. to come rescue her. By the time of the Purple Wedding, for all she knows, she is on her own and nobody is coming. I suspect in the end she becomes Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, possibly with Tyrion as her husband.
And if you think she doesn't have the courage to do this, remember she's a Stark.
